Save the Date for Eat Ice Cream (Froyo) for Breakfast Day

Fro-yo girl here. Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is on my calendar this year because Jeni’s Scoop Shops across the country are opening early, at 9 AM on that day, Saturday, February 2. And 100% of the profits from 9 AM – noon on Feb. 2 will go to a non-profit, She Should Run. She Should Run is working to get 250,000 women running for elected office by 2030. I know I plan to get Jeni’s Lemon Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt for breakfast.

Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of February. It was started in the 1960s by Florence Rappaport of New York, who came up with the idea when her kids were bored during a snowstorm.

I used to have froyo for breakfast because Jubili in San Francisco opened early. Fraiche also opened early. Back in 2013, I even had a post called Froyo for Breakfast.

Pinkberry Union Square no longer opens early. Fraiche closed its San Francisco location. Caffe Ambrosia is still there and maybe they’ll still serve froyo early if you call ahead.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Plain Greek Frozen Yogurt at Nick the Greek, Morgan Hill Location Opens on February 1

Fro-yo girl here. Late last year, some locations of Nick the Greek started offering Greek frozen yogurt. It’s offered at their San Jose location near Bascom, Willow Glen location and the brand new location in Morgan Hill. Once I heard about the froyo, I knew that I had to go.

I visited the location in San Jose off Bascom. They had one kind of frozen yogurt, plain Greek frozen yogurt. You can get it plain ($4.95) or with honey and baklava ($5.95). There were no other toppings. I like how they keep it simple, but the portion was too large for a snack and there’s only one size offered.

* Plain Greek frozen yogurt w/ baklava and honey: I admired the care that went into this cup of froyo. I think honey was added to the bottom and sides of the cup, then froyo was added till the cup was half full, next baklava was added, more froyo was added, and the creation was finished off with more baklava crumbles and honey. The baklava was excellent – moist, chewy, with cinnamon and chopped walnuts. There was a generous amount of baklava, froyo, and honey. The honey made some of the froyo parfait pretty sweet, but the frozen yogurt itself was not as sweet as usual. The texture wasn’t optimal – it wasn’t that smooth and it melted fast, but I did like the flavor – uncomplicated, not too sweet, less processed tasting, tangy with a hint of sourness. The texture was denser than Souvla’s and more creamy than icy. It certainly wasn’t watery and I didn’t find it too icy, but it could have been smoother.

Nick the Greek was established in 2014 by three cousins, all named Nick, and 2nd generation Greeks. The mini chain currently has 10 locations in the Bay Area. The authentic Greek fare served in a fast casual setting. The specialities are souvlaki and gyros. I’d definitely like to see more locations open and they’d better have froyo.

The Morgan Hill Location is having a grand opening celebration on February 1. Lunch will be free from 12 PM-3PM (but not froyo, I think). The address is 632 Tennant Station, Morgan Hill, CA 95037.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yasso Introduces Three New Yogurt Bar Flavors, Starting with Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl

Fro-yo girl here. I recently read that Yasso was launching three new Yasso frozen Greek yogurt bar flavors: Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl (exclusively at Target), Orange Cream, and Butter Pecan. The bars feature new packaging. I found Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl at Target in La Canada Flintridge, CA. Target was selling Yasso bars for $4.79, and 2 boxes for $7 on sale.

Each box comes with four frozen yogurt bars and each 3.5 fl oz bar has 100 or fewer calories with 5 grams of protein. The Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl bars are 80 calories each, with no fat, 11g sugar, and 5g protein.

Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl bars: What pretty bars! And they tasted as good as they looked. The texture was light and creamy. The chocolate flavor was mild and not too sweet. I liked how it wasn’t heavy or rich.

Ingredients: Chocolate frozen Greek yogurt (nonfat milk, sugar, Greek yogurt (nonfat milk, yogurt cultures), milk protein concentrate, maltodextrin, Dutch processed cocoa, locust bean gum, guar gum, natural flavor) Vanilla flavored frozen Greek yogurt (nonfat milk, Greek yogurt (nonfat milk, yogurt cultures), sugar, milk protein concentrate, maltodextrin, cream, locust bean gum, guar gum, natural flavor).

4 out of 5 stars.

N2 Lab Now Open in Monrovia, CA

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve seen N2 Lab before – in Azusa, CA where it replaced Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt (N2 Lab is now closed in Azusa). They make fresh ice cream or frozen yogurt with liquid nitrogen. The menu also includes crepes, boba tea, shaved snow, smoothies, dragon’s breath, and egg waffles. It looks like they just opened in downtown Monrovia.

The grand opening is scheduled for February 8-9 and will include 50% off drinks, and buy 1, get 1 half off for ice cream.

N2 Lab also has locations in Commerce and Whittier.

Pinkberry Closes at Newport Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been trying to go to every Pinkberry with an added sense of urgency, because they keep closing. I went to Fashion Island really wanting to go to Pinkberry after doing some shopping, only to learn that the shop closed less than a week ago, according to mall employees.

I don’t know why Pinkberry closed but it opened in April 2008 and was over 10 years old. Pinkberry Fashion Island was their 50th location when it opened. Maybe they lost their lease? Their Facebook page has already been taken down.

Fashion Island has a Pressed Juicery that serves Freeze, the vegan soft serve, and Bloomingdale’s has froyo. At least there’s still froyo at Fashion Island. I was actually so devastated that I forgot to go to Bloomingdale’s for froyo.

Hi-Chew Yogurt Mix Review

Fro-yo girl here. I love Hi-Chew, so I was excited to find a bag of Morinaga Hi-Chew Yogurt Mix at Hmart Arcadia (1101 W Huntington Dr., Arcadia, CA). One bag is 3.17 oz and $1.99. It’s made in China under license of Morinaga & Co., Ltd., Japan. The candies are individually wrapped. The assortment includes three flavors: Blueberry Yogurt, Plain Yogurt, Strawberry Yogurt.

  • Plain Yogurt: The candy was very firm and chewy (like Starburst). I think it was firmer than the Hi-Chew from Japan and the pieces were misshapen. The ones from Japan aren’t misshapen. Flavor wise, it tasted like a sweet Yakult like flavor with a slight tang. The texture and flavor reminded me of bubblegum.
  • Strawberry Yogurt: This candy was a little tangier, with a faint strawberry flavor didn’t taste that natural.
  • Blueberry Yogurt: The Blueberry Yogurt flavor was sweeter but more natural. It was the best flavor.

I had Hi-Chew yogurt before and it was better then.

Ingredients: Glucose syrup, sugar, vegetable oil (palm oil, hydrogenated palm oil), less than 2% of gelatin, natural and artificial flavors, lactic acid, malic acid, sorbitan, monostearate, sucrose fatty acid esters, strawberry jam, strawberry juice concentrate, fruit juice (color), vegetable juice (color), purple sweet potato juice (color), soy lecithin.

One serving is 6 pieces, 130 calories, 3g fat, 19g sugars, and 0g protein.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Lotte Strawberry Greek Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. I reviewed Lotte Foods Blueberry Greek Yogurt Bars back in 2016. I remember liking it, but it wasn’t tangy enough for me to want to buy it again. But I thought the strawberry flavor would be worth trying. I found it at 99 Ranch Market in Alhambra, CA. A box of bars is $6.49 regular price and I got it on sale for $3.98.

One package contains six individually wrapped frozen yogurt bars. One bar is 85 ml with 190 calories and 11g of fat. The bars are manufactured in Korea.

The bar is pretty. It had a thin, white coating that tasted like white chocolate and was creamy and very sweet. The interior was soft and creamy and not too dense. The strawberry swirls were thin and didn’t add much strawberry flavor. I could taste yogurt and a tiny bit of tang. I liked the texture but the coating was too sweet and there wasn’t enough strawberry flavor. All that fat keeps it creamy though.

Ingredients: Water, yogurt coating (rapeseed oil, coconut oil, sugar, mixed milk powder, lactose), sugar, mixed milk powder (skim milk powder, sweet whey powder), thick fermented milk (milk, sugar, skim milk, lactic acid), strawberry syrup (strawberry, sugar, water, oligofructose, starch, pectin, citric acid, triosodium citrate, locust bean gum, anthocynanins, calcium phosphate, dimethicone, water), oligosaccharide (corn syrup, isomaltooligosaccharide, fructose), butter, milk, artificial flavor (yogurt), citric acid, mixed formulation (guar gum, locust bean gum, carrageenan, tamarind gum), glycerin esters of fatty acid, Greek yogurt powder (skim milk powder, bacterial culture, dextrin).

As you can see, the list of ingredients is crazy long.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Another Price Hike at Yogurtland Pasadena (Lake Ave.)

Fro-yo girl here. I was surprised to see that the price went up at Yogurtland Pasadena, yet again. It's now 59 cents/oz. The last price hike was just 4 months ago, in October 2018, when the price was increased from 48 cents/oz to 52 cents/oz. That's an increase of 23% since early October 2018. It's still cheaper than Yogurtland Old Town Pasadena though.

Rarest Froyo Spoons From My Collection

Fro-yo girl here. I recently organized my frozen yogurt spoon collection and in the process, saw some rare froyo spoons that I hadn’t seen for years. I know there are other froyo spoon admirers and collectors out there. This post is dedicated to them.

My rarest froyo spoons:

(1) Fru:yo elephant spoon

Fru:yo Factory had several locations in Hong Kong. At the shop entrance, a giant elephant holding a cup of froyo with his trunk greeted guests. The same elephant is shown on their froyo spoons. I believe all the locations have closed and that the elephant found a new home.

(2) Berry Chill color changing spoon

Long before Pinkberry and Yogurtland opened in the Windy City, Berry Chill was the place to get tart froyo. They even had a cute white bear mascot. They had color changing cups and spoons. Berry Chill gave me my first color changing spoon. The spoon features the Berry Chill logo. Berry Chill opened several locations in Chicago, filed for bankruptcy in 2010, and closed their shops.

(3) Snog spoon

This rare spoon is my only metal froyo spoon. The limited edition Snog spoons were designed by Tomas Alonso of the Royal College of Art. Snog spoons came in one color, hot pink, and they were made out of shiny anodized aluminum. My friend from the UK gave me the spoon.

(4) Menchie’s test spoon

This orange Menchie’s spoon that features Chip was a test spoon for a run of spoons. The test spoons aren’t available in stores. It looks like a test spoon for the brown Chip spoons.

(5) 7 Eleven froyo spoon

In Norway, 7-Eleven locations have self-serve froyo and there’s even a 7-Eleven froyo truck. The 7-Eleven froyo spoons have extra long handles and they’re imprinted with the words, 7-Eleven’s Frozen Yogurt.

(6) Sno:la spoons

These are compostable wooden spoons. The larger one is from their Beverly Hills shop that closed. The smaller one is from their Tokyo shop. Everything is smaller in Japan, or bigger in America.

(7) Tutti Frutti light up spoon

These unusual spoons have a built in light. To activate the light, you have to twist the top of the spoon sideways. These are the only light up spoons in my collection.

(8) Yogurtland original logo spoons

The first Yogurtland logo spoons were clear pink and green. They still had the old logo. Later, they decided to switch to compostable spoons.

(9) Yogurtland 5th anniversary spoon

When Yogurtland turned five in 2011, they handed out the limited edition purple spoon – for one day only!

If you missed my earlier post, I am selling some of my froyo spoons. See

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Ellenos Greek Yogurt Now Available at Bristol Farms in Southern California

Fro-yo girl here. I was surprised to see Ellenos Greek Yogurt at Bristol Farms. Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt is a Seattle based family business that opened Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt opened at Seattle’s Pike Place Market in late 2013. Family owned, their probiotic Greek style yogurt is handcrafted using traditional methods and local ingredients, including local milk and local honey. The yogurt is all natural and does not use thickeners, stabilizers, or gelatins. It’s rich because they use whole milk. The yogurt toppings are all natural as well.

Bristol Farms started carrying Ellenos in December 2018. I missed the fact that Whole Foods started carrying Ellenos at their Northern California locations last summer. The small size is 8 oz and $3.99. The larger size is 16 oz and $6.49.

Ellenos has 1,617 reviews on Yelp with an average 5 star rating. It’s loved by people who love Greek yogurt and those who claim not to like Greek yogurt.

Marionberry yogurt: The texture was very smooth. The marionberry puree was not blended into the yogurt, so I was able to try the plain yogurt before mixing. The plain yogurt was very sweet, with no sourness and a tiny bit of tang. It was heavy and had a cream aftertaste. The marionberry puree was tangier, so mixing it with the plain yogurt improved the overall experience for me.

Lemon curd yogurt: The texture was also smooth. It was a bit sweeter than the marionberry yogurt. I wish it were less sweet and tangier. Their yogurt has no sourness. I miss the sourness!

One serving of Marionberry yogurt is 8 oz, 315 calories, 8g fat, 36g sugars, and 17g protein. The yogurt is very heavy though, so I imagine most people wouldn’t eat 8 oz.

Ingredients (Marionberry yogurt): Yogurt (Grand A Pasteurized Cultured Milk (Live and Active Cultures (S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, and L. Casei)), Cane Sugar, Honey), Marionberry Puree (Marionberries and Cane Sugar).

4 out of 5 stars.

Pinkberry Introduces New Pinkbee’s Cookie Butter

Fro-yo girl here. Pinkberry is welcoming the new year with a new Pinkbee’s milk ice cream flavor, Cookie Butter. Think speculoos and crispy Lotus Biscoff cookies. Yum.

Pinkbee’s Cookie Butter is a reduced fat, milk ice cream. It must be made with Biscoff cookies because it definitely has that caramelized flavor, but it’s light and creamy. Pinkberry also had cookie crumbs to add texture.

Last year their first new flavor was Pinkbee’s Chocolate. In January 2016, it was Pinkbee’s Strawberry.

Here’s the official press release:

Menchie’s January 2019 Feature Flavors: Golden Graham Cracker, Dark Chocolate Mousse

Fro-yo girl here. New year, new flavors. Menchie’s is featuring two flavors this January, Golden Graham Cracker froyo and Dark Chocolate Mousse dairy-free froyo made with almond milk. I could not find these flavors at the Menchie’s locations that are close to me. But, I know that Menchie’s Encino, Valley Village, and Northridge are usually good about carrying the new flavors. They're the best locations in the Los Angeles area.

* Golden Graham Cracker: It’s hard to believe that Menchie’s never had a graham cracker flavor before? I was very impressed with this new flavor. It’s one of the best Menchie’s flavors EVER. Yes, ever. I could see bits of graham crackers in the frozen yogurt. I love graham crackers. The froyo had a distinctive graham cracker taste, a smooth, creamy texture, and the sweetness wasn’t overwhelming. I think Golden Graham Cracker froyo could go with most toppings, but I like it with Heath, almonds, and chocolate shell. Cinnamon Toast Crunch would be great too. GGC is nonfat and made with real graham crackers. Get some!

* Dark Chocolate Mousse made with almond milk: I remember having this flavor before in 2016, so it’s not brand new. It tastes like dark chocolate and it’s quite creamy. It’s dairy free and lowfat. Recommended toppings: Cool Whip, Ande’s Mints, Oreos

I noticed a sign for National Frozen Yogurt Day, February 6. Menchie’s will offer the BOGO free offer again.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. A few months ago, Chobani rolled out its new line of low sugar, high protein Greek yogurt, called A Hint of…, across the US. Recently, they added lower sugar mix-in style Greek yogurt (similar to their Flips) which I spotted at Target. The sign said New at Target, so the product line extension must be pretty new. Also, it says “New” on the packaging.

Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt is $1.19 each. It’s made with 2% lowfat milk and has “30% less sugar than other mix-in yogurts.” One cup is 4.5 oz. It’s Kosher and all natural.

Available flavors: Raspberry Chocolate Crunch, Lemon Cookie Crunch, Vanilla Mocha Crunch, Mango Coconut Crunch, Honey Pistachio Crunch

* Vanilla Mocha Crunch: This item features Madagascar vanilla & cinnamon lowfat Greek yogurt with biscotti pieces, mocha brownies & hazelnuts. The yogurt is smooth and has a mild, light vanilla flavor. It's thick but not as thick as skyr. The cinnamon flavor is even more subtle. It has a little sourness but it’s still sweet (but not too sweet). The toppings add sweetness and crunch. The brownies were tiny and firm. The biscotti was more like a crumble. One cup is 140 calories, 4.5g fat, 12g sugars, and 10g protein.

* Lemon Cookie Crunch: This item features Fino lemon lowfat Greek yogurt with lemon cookie crumble and white chocolate chunks. The yogurt was smooth, sweet and tangy. The lemon flavor tasted different, maybe because it’s Fino lemon. I liked that there was a tartness but I’m used to the Fino lemon flavor.

Ingredients (Vanilla Mocha Crunch): Cultured pasteurized nonfat milk, cream, live and active cultures, cane sugar, water, hazelnuts, wheat flour, wheat starch, sunflower oil, milk, natural flavors, coffee powder, milk protein, fruit pectin, chocolate, cocoa butter, locust bean gum, guar gum, cinnamon, lemon juice concentrate, soy lecithin, vanilla extract, salt

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

Yogurtland Pasadena Adds Drinkable Creations

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve had Yogurtland drinks at other locations, but Yogurtland Pasadena (Lake Ave.) just added the drinks. I first tried the drinks when they were being tested at the Yogurtland location in Huntington Beach, CA back in 2017.

Other Yogurtland locations have recently added Drinkable Creations as well, including Burbank, San Gabriel, Fullerton, West Covina, Alhambra, USC, Pico Rivera, etc. It looks like many locations now offer Drinkable Creations.

There are two drinks: Classic Vanilla Milkshake and Cold Brrrrew Coffee Frappe. They’re customizable and self-serve. You can add as much of each as you’d like and top with unlimited toppings and sauces for $2.99.

* Coffee Frappe: It’s pretty strong and not too sweet with tiny bits of ice. I love a good strong coffee flavor, so I was a fan. This flavor has milk, cream and sugar.

* Vanilla Milkshake: This was sweet, creamy, and soft. The flavor seemed very mild to me.

I personally like to get mostly Coffee Frappe and a bit of Vanilla Milkshake for creaminess (90% coffee frappe, 10% vanilla milkshake) topped with lots of whipped cream and chocolate chips.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Chobani Greek Yogurt with A Hint of…Review

Fro-yo girl here. This past August, Chobani rolled out its new line of low sugar, high protein Greek yogurt, called A Hint of…, across the US. Hint achieves a milder flavor by using different yogurt cultures than Chobani’s core Greek yogurt line. It does not contan high intensity sweeteners. I found it at Target for $1.59 each, with a 30 cents off coupon, compared to $1.00 for the core Chobani Greek yogurt line. It’s more expensive than the regular Chobani but it appeals to people like me who find that regular yogurt is often too sweet. Chobani uses “hand-selected varietal fruits and nourishing spices for a curated approach to wellness and taste.”

Hint comes in seven flavors: Madagascar Vanilla & Cinnamon, Wild Blueberry, Monterey Strawberry, Gili Cherry, Alphonso Mango, Clingstone Peach, and Willamette Raspberry. All of the flavors sound appealing.

Each 5.3 oz cup contains 2% milkfat, 12g protein, and 9g of sugar. Demand has increased for less sweet options (yay!).

The packaging is nice – with a subtle hint of color towards the bottom hinting at the flavor within. The shape is curved.

* Hint of Willamette Raspberry: The yogurt smelled nice and yogurt-like. The texture was smooth, creamy, and thicker, though not as thick as skyr. The raspberries were blended in. I could not see any seeds or skin. The color was a pretty pale pink. One cup (150g) was 120 calories. The flavor was pleasant – sour, tangy, with less raspberry flavor. It’s a milder yogurt, as Chobani promised. It was definitely sweet enough. I don’t need a milder yogurt though, so I’m more of a skyr person. I appreciate Chobani's low sugar line though, and I like how it does not use high intensity sweeteners.

Ingredients: Lowfat yogurt (cultured pasteurized nonfat milk, cream), water, evaporated cane sugar, raspberry puree, natural flavors, vegetable juice concentrate (for color), fruit pectin, locust bean gum, guar gum.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

My Froyo Wish List for 2019

Fro-yo girl here. It’s time for my annual froyo wish list for 2019. Before revealing my wishes for the new year, I like to see if any of my previous wishes from this time last year came true.

Last January I wished for the following:

First, let's see if any of my 2018 wishes came true. Last year I wished for:

* More soy froyo (or tofu soft serve)

Update: The anti-soy sentiment seems to explain the lack of new soymilk based flavors, though I did have some great soymilk soft serve at Big Softee, the new soft serve ice cream shop in Monterey Park, CA.

* Bring back the tart

Update: It was a bad year for tart flavors – didn’t see many new ones. However, Pinkberry did come through with a tarter tart flavor, the new green tea lemonade. It was like they read my mind since the flavor I missed the most was green tea tart froyo. Thanks Pinkberry!

* More Halloween froyo spoons

Update: It was another very slow year for collectible froyo spoons, but Menchie’s did come out with color changing Halloween spoons. I have so many froyo spoons that it’s probably good that the era of collectible froyo spoons is nearing an end. At this point, I don’t want too many new froyo spoons and I’d like to get rid of some of the extra ones that I have.

* Good bubble waffles

Update: Several new places offer these but they’re not froyo shops. Most of them are boba and ice cream shops. Cauldron Ice Cream’s bubble waffles are accessible but they aren’t that good.

So, some of my 2018 froyo wishes did come true. Interestingly, my 2017 wish of trying llaollao is a little closer to coming true, since they opened their first location in the US (in Houston). The next US location will be in Miami. Way back in 2013 I wished to be served by a froyo robot and that seems likely to happen soon.

My froyo wishes for 2019 are:

  • Have Pita GR open in Pasadena. Pita GR opened this year in Downey, CA. I love their housemade frozen Greek yogurt. It’s amazing, even better than Souvla’s. I know they plan to open a Greek donut place next but I’m hoping to see them in Pasadena in a year or two.
  • Yellow sesame/tahini froyo. Mr. Froyo has been asking about this flavor for years, so I guess it’s more his wish than mine, but I do love tahini.
  • Frozen skyr. I still love skyr and would love to try a frozen version. Or I’d be happy with a lower sugar froyo, even if it means higher fat (and it probably would).

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
