Froyo Shop Owner Survey Reveals the Current State of the Frozen Yogurt Industry

Fro-yo girl here. Last September, the International Frozen Yogurt Association launched the Second National Frozen Yogurt Shop Owner Survey. The anonymous online survey asked frozen yogurt shop owners in the US about operational practices, shop and owner characteristics, supplier satisfaction, concerns, and shop performance.

The goals of the survey were to:

  • Provide shop owners with benchmarks to assess how they compare to other frozen yogurt shops
  • Help suppliers learn more about how shops felt about their suppliers
  • Provide an overall sense of where the frozen yogurt industry is headed

Shop Owner Survey Findings

The 2018 findings were very similar to the 2017 findings. Survey respondents were optimistic about the future of their business, though they were concerned about rising costs, finding and keeping good employees, finding new customers, and the seasonality of frozen yogurt demand. They were also fairly satisfied with their suppliers, especially their soft serve mix suppliers.

Two new questions were added at the request of last year's respondents. The questions concerned sampling policies and seasonal hours.

About the Respondents

Sixty-five responses were received from frozen yogurt shop owners. Responses were received from shops located in 20 states, with the most responses from California (12.1%), Michigan (8.6%) and North Carolina (8.6%).

Respondent characteristics:

  • 89% are self-serve shops
  • 75% are not part of a franchise
  • 72% had no previous experience managing a foodservice establishment

Accessing the Survey Results

The full results are available for $150. To order the report or for more information, please contact at info@internationalfrozenyogurt.com

A limited set of results is available for IFYA members in the members only Resources section of IFYA’s website.

Culinary Tours Icelandic Style Skyr Review

Fro-yo girl here. Stater Bros. Market recently opened its first location in Pasadena. Of course, I had to see if I could find new frozen yogurt or yogurt products to try. And I found a new line of Icelandic style yogurt, aka skyr, that I hadn’t seen before, Culinary Tours. Culinary Tours products are carried by a variety of retailers, but the only one around here (Southern California) on the list is Stater Bros.

Stater Bros. was selling Culinary Tours Icelandic Style Skyr for 79 cents on sale. The regular price is 99 cents. That’s definitely cheap for skyr, which tends to be more expensive. One cup is 5 oz and contains at least 14g of protein. It’s made with whole milk and all-natural ingredients.

Available flavors: Coconut, Blueberry, Strawberry, Key Lime, Vanilla, Plain

  • Vanilla: I didn’t have high expectations because of the low price, but I was pleasantly surprised by this yogurt. I noticed some small clumps but when I stirred the yogurt, it was smooth, thick, and extra glossy. I saw plenty of vanilla bean specks. It wasn’t too sweet but had a sour flavor and sour aftertaste that I actually enjoy. Of the three flavors I tried, this one had the least sugar and it was the thickest. It was also the one I liked the best. One serving had 150 calories, 5g total fat, 12g total carbohydrates, 10g sugars, and 15g protein.
  • Blueberry: This was the second best flavor. The blueberry yogurt was very thick and tangy, with an underlying sourness. It was a little chalky but the blueberry flavor was quite noticeable. I could see tiny bits of blueberry skin from the blueberry puree.
  • Key Lime: Of the three flavors that I tried, this had the most sugar and the least yogurt intensity. It was sweeter but still tangy. The fruit flavor was not as strong.

Ingredients (vanilla): Grade A whole milk, grade A skim milk, sugar, vanilla extract, vanilla bean, live and active cultures.

The list of ingredients is short and simple.

For some reason, there’s very little information about this product online. It’s not even listed on the Culinary Tours website.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Future Froyo Shop Pics: Yoga-urt #2

Fro-yo girl here. The news broke in early October that Yoga-urt is opening a second location in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The actual spot was just revealed, 2211 W. Sunset Blvd., and I just drove by to see it. It’s between a shop that I’ve been to a few times, Memento Mori, and a candle store, near the busy intersection of Sunset Blvd. and the 2 (N Alvarado St.). The signs are up. There are pictures of froyo and smoothies in the window.

The first shop opened three years ago in Kenneth Village (Glendale, CA). Mr. Froyo and I are regulars there and it’s the only froyo that he will eat. Yes, it’s organic, vegan, kosher, probiotic, and soy free. It’s LA’s first all organic, non-dairy froyo place. We love it because it tastes so fresh and natural. It’s handmade in small batches. They make their own almond milk. It’s the freshest, best froyo you can get. The gluten free cones are so good. The housemade sauces are fabulous. The shop has a particular scent that we love. Mr. Froyo even likes the music that they play. And the amazing woman behind Yoga-urt, Melissa Schulman, has poured her heart and soul into this business. She radiates positivity and sincerity (might be the yoga training coming through).

Expect to see Yoga-urt #2 open in Spring 2019. Of course, you should visit Yoga-urt #1, especially if you haven’t already tried it. Bring friends and anyone who loves froyo.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s Mandalay Village Opens in Port Hueneme, CA

Fro-yo girl here. I did miss the soft opening on October 22, ribbon cutting ceremony on October 26, and the grand opening weekend of Menchie’s Mandalay Village (Port Hueneme, CA), but it was pretty far to travel even for free froyo. However, I did swing by the shop before it opened and I visited it recently.

As I mentioned earlier, this location has 12 flavors a day for 59 cents an ounce, and the usual Menchie’s topping bar. They also sell frozen yogurt cakes and pre-packed quarts of froyo for $6.99. On Wednesdays, waffles are free, and a 20% discount for anyone who shows a military ID. It’s a fairly large location but far from the freeway. It’s in a large shopping center next to the Habit and across from Ross.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

* MENCHIE’S MANDALAY VILLAGE: 563 West Channel Islands Blvd., Port Hueneme, CA 93041

New Frozen Greek Yogurt Alert: Pita GR in Downey, CA

Fro-yo girl here. Pita GR (the GR stands for Greek) is a fine-fast casual Greek street food eatery that opened in late September 2018. The chef is Greek. I also learned that there's a good number of Greeks living in Downey and a Greek church.

The menu is simple: choose lamb (soulva or lamb chops), pork (yeero or souvlaki), chicken souvla or roasted sweet potato as a pita sandwich, salad or plate/merida. They also have dips, meat sold by weight, sides, desserts, Greek beer, Greek wine, drinks and GREEK FROZEN YOGURT with sour cherry syrup, lemon preserve, housemade baklava, or wildflower honey.

They make their own frozen Greek yogurt with their own recipe and they make their own baklava as well. There's only one flavor, plain.

* Frozen Greek yogurt with crumbled baklava ($5): I was impressed they had a shiny new Carpigiani soft serve machine. The set up, toppings, machine and cups made me think of Souvla SF. However, Pita GR’s Greek frozen yogurt is better than Souvla’s – and I love Souvla’s. There’s one flavor, plain, and the texture is amazing – it’s thick and smooth, it’s not icy or too creamy either. It tastes fresh and mildly tangy, with a clean finish. They make it with Greek yogurt. The baklava was fresh and soft. If I lived closer, I’d come for the froyo all the time. It's amazing.

Oh, the owners plan to open a Greek donut (loukoumades) shop next, at 9232 Lakewood Blvd. in Downey. They won't have froyo at the donut shop. Greek froyo with fresh loukoumades sounds divine, doesn't it?

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pinkberry Introduces Pineapple Colada Flavor, Partners with New Aquaman Movie

Fro-yo girl here. I remember Pinkberry had a pina colada froyo flavor. Their newest flavor, Pineapple Colada, sounds very similar but it must be different because it’s listed separately on the Pinkberry website. Pineapple Colada froyo is tart and features pineapple and coconut. Sounds like pina colada? I doubt I ever had a cup of Pina Colada Pinkberry because I don’t like coconut.

However, I decided to try the new Pineapple Colada because of the special offer for Pinkcard holders, buy two Pineapple Colada Wave creations within two weeks, and get a free swirl. I was also intrigued to see the special Aquaman Pinkberry cup, because I’ve never seen a special Pinkberry promo cup before, except for the launch of the PinkCard years ago. The blue cup says Aquaman on one side and Pinkberry on the other.

The Pineapple Colada Wave features pretty blue Pineapple Colada froyo w/ fresh pineapple and metallic blue, silver, and white sprinkles. It was an unusual combination that I would have never chosen on my own but it worked. The yogurt was smooth and light. The coconut flavor was not too strong. It was mildly tangy. The sprinkles were bits of sugar that added a little crunch. The tangy pineapple pieces helped keep the creation from being too sweet.

Aquaman the Movie comes out on December 21, 2018.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Here’s the official press release:

Tenth Blogiversary of Fro-yo Girl Speaks

Fro-yo girl here. This is embarrassing, but I forgot to acknowledge my tenth blogiversary on October 20, 2018. I was so busy planning for Halloween that it just slipped my mind. This week I finally organized my froyo spoon collection and I realized I’ve been collecting froyo spoons for almost ten years. I have so many spoons that I need to sell or trade some of them (see my next post).

Ten years. I’ve seen so many froyo shops come and go. The ones that closed that I really miss are:

  • Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt in Palo Alto (my 2008 cup of Culture strawberry froyo with nectarines is pictured, the first picture ever posted to this blog)
  • Jubili in San Francisco: The first place I tried tart froyo and mochi balls
  • The original (1st) Tuttimelon on Irving St. in San Francisco
  • Pinkberry in Pasadena and Glendale
  • Sno:la in Beverly Hills

The question I get asked the most is who has the best froyo. During the past few years while froyo shops have added soft serve ice cream, gelato, and frozen custard, along with indulgent flavors, I’ve been obsessed with the simplicity of the plain Greek frozen yogurt with Greek toppings at Souvla in San Francisco, the organic, sophisticated flavors at Easy Breezy in San Francisco, and the plant-based, organic, kosher, soy-free, probiotic luscious offerings at Yoga-urt in Glendale, CA. The frozen yogurt at the three places I listed tastes fresher and less processed.

If I lived in NYC, I’m sure that I would be a frequent visitor to Culture. I’m happy that I’ve been there more than once.

My favorite froyo memories over the years are:
  • Attending the 2014 Critics Choice TV Awards as Yogurtland's guest. Yogurtland served froyo at the event. The big winners that year were Orange Is the New Black, Masters of Sex, and True Detective. Thanks, Yogurtland!!!
  • Attending YoCream's Froyo Conference in 2011 as YoCream's guest. I learned about froyo store operations, toured the factory, and met the founder of YoCream, John Hanna, and other important people in froyo. Thanks, YoCream!!!
  • Visiting Yogurtland HQ and talking to Phillip Chang in his office.
  • Visiting Menchie's HQ and talking to Amit Kleinberger. He kept smiling!
  • Meeting the Pinkberry team, including Ron Graves, and sampling test flavors at Pinkberry HQ
  • Attending the NRA Show in Chicago
  • Meeting Roy Lam of Tuttimelon and getting the VIP treatment at Tuttimelon openings. I still have all the t-shirts, Tuttimelon merchandise, and Tuttimelon bear.
  • Visiting Jonathan Rim, the owner of Blush Organic Frozen Yogurt in Dublin and getting free froyo to take home
  • Spending time with the owners of the Bay Area Red Mango locations: Richard, Steven and Yul
  • Every National/International Frozen Yogurt Day
  • Starting the National Frozen Yogurt Association
  • Conducting froyo research
  • Winning the Yogurtland San Francisco marketing plan competition
  • The time Yogurtland sent me a set of Tokidoki froyo spoons and a Tokidoki t-shirt
I started the blog in 2008 to track frozen yogurt news – and that’s still the main purpose. Thank you so much to my fans and readers and keep eating frozen yogurt!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s Mid-November Flavor Change

Fro-yo girl here. Happy mid-November! It’s time for the continuation of Menchie’s holiday promotion, with two feature flavors. Both are returning frozen yogurt flavors.

* Double Espresso Tiramisu: This lowfat frozen yogurt is made with real cookies, mascarpone, and cocoa. It’s a good flavor - not super strong coffee/espresso but sweeter and more indulgent because of the mascarpone. Recommended toppings: Nilla wafers, almonds, chocolate chips, Cool Whip

* Spiced Gingerbread Cookie: This lowfat flavor tastes more like gingerbread spices than gingerbread cookies. It's a bit powdery tasting, so I'm not a fan. The spices like ginger and cinnamon are definitely noticeable but not overpowering. Recommended toppings: almonds, Heath, Magic Shell and brownies.

I haven’t seen any holiday spoons, cups, or gift cards. Hmm…

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

YQ by Yoplait Review

Fro-yo girl here. Yoplait introduced YQ by Yoplait this past summer. The innovative new yogurt is made with ultra-filtered milk and it’s low sugar, protein-rich, gluten free, and 99% lactose free. It’s sweetened with cane sugar. The ingredients list is short and everything is natural.

YQ by Yoplait is available in 8 flavors: Plain, Coconut, Peach, Mango, Lime, Strawberry, Blueberry and Vanilla. YQ Plain has 1 gram of sugar per serving and 17 grams of protein, while the flavored varieties have 9 grams of sugar and 15 grams of protein per serving. One serving is 5.3 oz.

The packaging is quite elegant, with a graceful curved shape and pastel colors. It’s clean looking.

While I’ve seen ultra filtered milk before, I’ve never had it. Ultra-filtered milk is filtered to concentrate the protein and calcium while reducing the amount of sugar and lactose. Yoplait combined the ultra-filtered milk with active cultures to create YQ.

Blueberry: It’s a blended yogurt and it’s supposed to be thick, creamy, and smooth but not as sweet. The yogurt looked thick but not as smooth as Greek yogurt. Stirring it made it look smoother. It smelled like sweet blueberries. The flavor was unusual – sweet but of course not very sweet and bland, though I could taste the blueberries. There was a little tang from the blueberries but not from the yogurt. While it’s supposed to be simple, it did taste processed to me. It’s like the removed the yogurt flavor. On the other hand, it was creamy and probably would be perfectly fine in smoothies or as an ingredient in recipes. It’s like yogurt for people who don’t love yogurt. Hmm. I love the flavor and tang of yogurt, so YQ isn’t for me, but I think it’s good for people who are lactose intolerant.

Strawberry: This tasted a bit better because of the stronger strawberry flavor. It doesn't taste bad but they removed the yogurt flavor.

One serving has 130 calories and 2.5g fat. The retail price is $1.49.

Ingredients (Blueberry YQ): Pasteurized grade A ultra-filtered milk, blueberries, cane sugar, pectin, black carrot juice, natural flavor, yogurt cultures.

I have to wonder who these people are that Yoplait talked to. They want to eat yogurt but they don't like the taste of yogurt. Weird.

3 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland’s No Weigh Tuesday $5 Cup Event Recap

Fro-yo girl here. I’m back from the Yogurtland No Weigh Tuesday ($5 flat rate cup) event that takes place today, November 13, from 4 PM – 9 PM at Yogurtland locations in the US. The event highlighted the new flavor, Butterfinger Frozen Custard and new topping, Butterfinger Bites (they’re mini bite-sized Butterfinger bars).

While my freezer is full of frozen yogurt and I’ve already tried Butterfinger frozen custard, I didn’t want to miss out on the Yogurtland event. Luckily, Yogurtland Pasadena (Lake) had Sumatra Coffee froyo. I headed over and it wasn’t easy to build a cup because of the crowds. There were no new cups or spoons. The new peppermint pretzels taste so good with Sumatra Coffee froyo. Yum. Why hasn't someone created a peppermint pretzel coffee froyo? Hint, hint.

My cup was over 30 ounces. I didn't go too crazy, but people were still staring.

Yogurtland had a similar event last November 14, 2017. The Yogurtland Ultimate Creation event also featured 16 oz $5 flat rate cups. They also had two new flavors, made with Ghirardelli, Frozen Hot Chocolate frozen yogurt and Dark Chocolate Blueberry sorbet, new Ghirardelli sauces and toppings, new cups and new I Heart Ghirardelli froyo spoons.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Golden Spoon Reopens in Glendora, CA, Under New Ownership

Fro-yo girl here. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Golden Spoon Glendora, which closed late last year, is BACK. They moved one spot over and have new ownership, a new sign (the logo looks different), and an expanded menu. Since they just reopened, they're still in soft opening mode, without the full menu.

During my visit, they had 4 froyo flavors and limited toppings. I was told that they'd have 10 flavors swirling later this week and they’ll also offer coffee and gelato. The froyo machines are behind the counter, so it's not self-serve. Ask for samples.

Prices: Mini ($2.95)/ Regular ($3.95)/ Large ($4.95)/Quarts ($8). Toppings: 60 cents for mini, $1 for other sizes. They have cups and cones.

It’s not the same Golden Spoon that was founded in 1983. GS had a tough year last year. Not only did seven locations close, but so did the corporate office. There are no longer any Golden Spoon franchisees or a corporate office to oversee GS locations.

The girl who swirled my froyo had impressive swirling skills. They still have golden spoons.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

* GOLDEN SPOON FROZEN YOGURT: 1365 E Gladstone St., Ste. 100, Glendora, CA 91740

Yogurtland’s No Weigh $5 Cup on Tuesday, November 13, New Butterfinger Frozen Custard, New Toppings

Fro-yo girl here. Earlier this week, Yogurtland sent an email about their upcoming No Weigh $5 Cup event on Tuesday, November 13 from 4 PM – 9 PM. The unlimited cup offer is for a 16 oz cup. I’m not sure that I’m ready to build another unlimited cup, since my freezer is still full of froyo from my last unlimited cup. It’s also not pleasant to build an unlimited cup when its crowded. But, it sounds like a fun event and they added another enticement: a new flavor, Butterfinger Frozen Custard, and new toppings, Butterfinger Bites and Peppermint Pretzels.

Yes, it’s frozen custard, not frozen yogurt (sad face). However, I’m a long time fan of Butterfinger. The best part of the Butterfinger is the crispy peanut butter center. The texture is so satisfying. While frozen custard or frozen yogurt can’t have a crispy texture, Butterfinger Bites can.

Yogurtland’s Butterfinger Frozen Custard is made with BUTTERFINGER®, of course. One ounce has 60 calories, 7g carbohydrates, and 1g protein. Their custard was very rich and super thick – like twice as thick as their frozen yogurt. The texture was smooth and while I could taste the Butterfinger (the peanut butter center), the flavor was more muted than I expected.

Menchie’s introduced a Butterfinger frozen yogurt flavor in 2016 called Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar which had more Butterfinger flavor.

Menchie’s November Feature Flavors, Holiday Cups, Gift Card Special

Fro-yo girl here. Happy November! The day after Halloween is always a very sad one, but thankfully, Menchie’s has new feature froyo flavors to look forward to – and more than the usual two per month. Their holiday promotion has begun and the flavor schedule is as follows:

  • November 1: Homemade snickerdoodle cookie, La crème brulee
  • November 16: Double espresso tiramisu, Spiced gingerbread cookie

I think I’ve had all four flavors in the past, but I had to go Menchie’s to get the new holiday cup (see the picture). It’s a cute cup, with Menchie and his friends decorating a festive giant cup of Menchie’s froyo.

The holiday gift card promotion is back. During November and December, you’ll get a $5 bonus card when you buy $25 worth of Menchie’s gift cards.

* Homemade Snickerdoodle Cookie: I quite enjoyed this flavor because it tasted like cinnamon. I’m also pumpkin spiced out, so cinnamon is a nice change but still a warm fall flavor. The texture was smooth and creamy. Recommended toppings: Chocolate shell, Heath, almonds, Nilla wafers.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Flavor at Yoga-urt for World Vegan Day: Pistachio Passion

Fro-yo girl here. Happy Belated World Vegan Day, November 1. Yoga-urt created a new flavor in honor of World Vegan Day: Pistachio Passion. I don’t think I know anyone without a nut allergy who doesn’t like pistachios. Mr. Froyo and I were both looking forward to the new flavor. It’s vegan, organic, kosher, probiotic, hand-crafted, and soy free like all of Yoga-urt’s flavors.

Pistachio Passion: This flavor is made with organic pistachios grown in Santa Barbara. It’s not made with a paste or puree. Yoga-urt grinds the pistachios themselves and adds it to their housemade almond/cashew base. Three kinds of nuts! Unlike other pistachio froyo, it’s full of pistachio flavor and has the added texture of the ground nuts. Mr. Froyo said it’s one of Yoga-urt’s best flavors and has so much more pistachio flavor than other pistachio froyo flavors. We both had a cup and it was so satisfying, wholesome, fresh, and just amazing. Yoga-urt recommends pairing Pistachio Passion with Strawberry Serenity, crushed pistachios, and fresh cut strawberries. I would include some granola. Or add my own pistachio baklava. Drool.

World Vegan Day is celebrated every November 1 since 1994. The Chair of the Vegan Society in the United Kingdom established World Vegan Day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Vegan Society.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
