In January 2024, I thought I saw a sign saying that the price per ounce at Yogurtland Pasadena on Lake Avenue was $0.69/oz. It was $0.67/oz in December 2023. The price was increased to $0.71/oz in February, crossing the $0.70/oz threshold that many froyo shops were hovering just below.

Amazingly, the price just went up again in March, to $0.75/oz. Menchie’s first new spoon of the year continues a tradition of introducing a spring-themed froyo spoon. The new spoon is bright yellow and features Menchie’s friend, PB, holding a cup of Menchie’s froyo in one hand and a spoon in the other. The amount of detail makes the spoon super cute. You can see that PB is holding a Menchie’s spoon and the cup of froyo has Menchie’s face on it. The froyo is covered in sprinkles. The spoon says “Spring Vibes!” on the handle. On the back, you can see the back of PB. The spoon feels nice and heavy.

Menchie’s is featuring two flavors this month: Cotton Candy froyo and Vegan Blueberry Lemonade sorbet. Both are returning flavors.

Menchie’s Smile Challenge app game is back. To play the game, download the Menchie’s app and scan the app every time you visit Menchie’s. The goal is to fill out the game board by doing what’s in each square – e.g., visit on a Monday. When you complete the game, you’ll get a $5 reward and be entered to win prizes, like free froyo for a year. Twelve winners will be selected. The game ends on March 31.

Featured flavors and collectible spoons are available for a limited time only at participating Menchie’s locations.

You know you love me. Alden’s Organic Greek Yogurt Bars were marked with a New For You sign at Sprouts in Eagle Rock (Los Angeles). One box contains four individually wrapped bars. Each bar is 2.5 fl oz. A box was $5.99 on sale and $7.99 regular price.
For some reason, the new bars are not listed on the Alden’s Ice Cream website. I also could not find a press release about the new bars. Sprouts had two flavors: Mint Fudge Twist, Chocolate Fudge Twist.

Mint Fudge Twist bars are made with real organic fudge and organic Greek yogurt. They’re non-GMO, gluten-free, and free of high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, carrageenan, and antibiotics. And they contain live & active probiotic cultures. The bar looked like a Yasso bar, with the fudge swirled into the mint yogurt. The texture was close to ideal: creamy, smooth, and soft. The bar did not taste like yogurt but it had a nice, refreshing mint flavor. It wasn’t crazy sweet and the fudge was nice – you could taste it and the flavor wasn’t overwhelming. I couldn’t taste the monk fruit. It was masked by the other flavors.

One bar is 90 calories with 3g total fat, 14g total carbs, 11g total sugars, and 2g protein.

Update: The press release came out. Yogurtland is ready for spring with new toppings. First, they have gummy rainbow clusters. They look great with the seasonal flavor, Lucky Irish Mint frozen yogurt. I think they’re Nerds? But the sign didn’t say Nerds. Nerds has gummy rainbow clusters that are gummy and sweet on the inside and crunchy and tangy on the outside.

I also spotted something called Strawberry Condensed Milk. I wasn’t sure what it was. It was a small square. I did some research and they’re probably using Yuki & Love’s strawberry condensed milk snowflake cake. It looks like the sign on the toppings bar was cut from the Yuki & Love package. The square was firm and chewy, like nougat, with strawberry flavor that tasted real. It had something in it with a little crunch – cookies? I liked how it wasn’t too sweet. It didn’t eat like a “cake” to me. Yuki & Love strawberry condensed milk snowflake cake is a product of Taiwan and it’s sold at Costco. Love trying something new and tasty at Yogurtland!

You know you love me. I recently found Mikawaya Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream with Boba at the Grocery Outlet. A box of six pieces was $3.99, with a list price of $6.49. I remember hearing about the new strawberry with boba ice cream, but this was my first time seeing it in a store.

I also couldn’t find any information about Mikawaya Strawberry Mochi with Boba ice cream online. The Mikawaya website doesn’t list the flavor. They must have discontinued it or maybe it was a limited-time flavor.

Mikawaya invented ice cream mochi and they had a shop in LA’s Little Tokyo for over a hundred years. Sadly, the shop closed in 2021, Mikawaya was acquired in 2015, and Mikawaya’s treats were rebranded as My Mochi. My Mochi makes a strawberry with boba mochi ice cream, possibly identical to the Mikawaya ones. You can still buy Mikawaya branded mochi ice cream AND My Mochi branded mochi ice cream.

Strawberry Mochi with Boba: The pink mochi shell was thin, soft, chewy, and sweet. It was stuffed with a sweet and creamy pink strawberry flavored ice cream with a chewy, soft, super sweet boba center. The boba part was way too sweet. It would have been better without the boba center.

One piece is 1.25 oz, 80 calories, with 1.5g total fat, 16g total carbs, 12g total sugars, and 1g protein.

You know you love me. Remember how during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, frozen yogurt shops couldn’t provide self-service or allow indoor dining? By 2021, partial-serve was being offered by some froyo shops. You could wear gloves and get your own froyo, but an employee would add the toppings. The toppings were kept on the other side of a clear plexiglass barrier.

I haven’t seen a froyo shop require or even recommend wearing a mask this year and the vast majority went back to self-serve in 2022. Yet, a few frozen yogurt shops still offer partial self-serve, including Yogurtland in Eagle Rock, Burbank, and East Hollywood. I can’t really understand it at this point. Partial-serve is more annoying than full-service or self-serve.

I don’t think any Menchie’s I’ve been to is still practicing partial-serve. However, the one “self-serve” Pinkberry shop in Burbank does practice partial-serve.

The problem with partial-serve is that it takes a long time to ask for each topping and if you don’t specify exactly how much you want, the employee tends to give you way too much. So, explaining how much you want and where you want it slows down the process further if you’re very particular about your froyo. Typically, one employee is assigned to put the toppings on and that’s much slower than allowing customers to get their own toppings. And the employee doesn't care what your cup of froyo looks like and doesn't place the toppings carefully. However, at counter-serve shops, the employee usually puts the toppings on carefully.

If you want to layer your froyo and toppings, you'll have to wait in line twice.

I’ve been avoiding Yogurtland locations that still practice partial-serve. While I was at Menchie’s in Encino, California, I spotted a new test flavor: Cap’N Crunch. I think it’s froyo but it didn’t say. It’s made with Cap’N Crunch cereal for sure. The froyo was creamy, thick, and smooth, but it didn’t taste like Cap’N Crunch to me. It tasted like vanilla with a hint of butterscotch.

Cap'n Crunch is a corn and oat cereal introduced in 1963 by the Quaker Oats Company. Cap’N Crunch is a popular froyo topping and it’s been offered as a froyo flavor by 16 Handles, Yogurtology, Aloha Yogurt, and others.

Test flavors are regularly offered at Menchie’s Encino and feedback is collected from Menchie’s guests.

You know you love me. On February 6, National Frozen Yogurt Day, I received a package in the mail. Inside was Angelica, a new froyo Squishmallow from the Scented Parfume Mystery Squad. Squismallows Mystery Squad is a blind bag (i.e., you don’t know which plush toy you are going to get until you open it) that comes in 5” and 8” plush sizes. And they’re scented. Angelica smells like strawberries. She’s pink with sprinkles, a strawberry, a blueberry, and a spoon. Her squishdate is 7/13/2023.

Squishmallow launched in 2017 and they’ve been releasing Mystery Squad toys since 2020. They’re released as a series, with different squad members in each series. Each one has a birthdate, name, and story (just like Beanie Babies).

Angelica was part of the 2024 dessert squad which had 6 types of plush toys and was released in January 2024. I spotted the Mystery Dessert Squad bags at Target in Pasadena, California, for $8.99 each. Pro-tip: there are holes in the bottom of the package, so you can smell the toy and see the color.

You can also buy Mystery Dessert Squad bags online on ToyWiz and other sites.

Angelica’s already been asking me to take her to all the best froyo spots. Expect to see her around soon.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Looking for more frozen yogurt news, discussion boards, and resources? It usually takes awhile for me to find the featured flavors at my local Menchie’s because many of them wait until they’ve run out of another flavor before they put in the new flavors. Anyway, thanks to National Frozen Yogurt Day, Menchie’s sold and gave away a lot of froyo and I found the featured flavors.

The featured flavors for February are: Gourmet Tiramisu gelato and Hershey’s Kisses Milk Chocolate froyo. They’re both returning flavors.

Gourmet Tiramisu Gelato was first introduced in May 2021. It combines rich mascarpone and bold espresso flavors just like the decadent Italian dessert. The gelato has live and active cultures, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors and no high-fructose corn syrup. Gourmet Tiramisu Gelato was rich, thick, creamy, and smooth, it tasted like a sweet espresso mellowed by mascarpone. Recommended toppings: Nilla wafers, almonds, white chocolate chips

Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses froyo was introduced in February 2017. It’s made with Hershey’s Chocolate, of course, and it does taste like Hershey’s Kisses – a mild chocolate froyo that’s creamy and smooth. Recommended toppings: mini Hershey’s Kisses, chocolate shell, graham crackers, marshmallows.

Featured flavors are available for a limited time only, while supplies last.

While National Frozen Yogurt Day has come and gone, Menchie’s is offering double smiles when you scan the Menchie’s app from February 7 – 20. Once you earn 50 smiles, you’ll receive a reward of $5 in Menchie’s Money to use on your next froyo purchase.

You know you love me. Happy National/International Frozen Yogurt Day! It’s one of my favorite days of the year, of course, and I usually have froyo for lunch on NFYD. I actually had a dream about froyo spoons yesterday, NFYD Eve, and had difficulty sleeping due to the excitement of the big day.

On NFYD 2024, I had a choice between BOGO free at Forty Carrots, Menchie’s, Yogurtland, and Pinkberry and a 20% off offer at Yoga-urt.

My first stop was at Pinkberry in Silver Lake for the BOGO free deal. I didn’t have any issues redeeming the offer, though I didn’t see any NFYD signs inside the shop. They also announced the NFYD at the last minute (again). However, the NFYD deal is the best Pinkberry deal all year.

Yogurtland was so crowded last NFYD that there was a long line and they ran out of many toppings, so I went earlier and there wasn’t a line. Also, the toppings bar was well-stocked. The rain might have also had something to do with the absence of a crowd. Yogurtland’s NFYD 2024 offer is a buy one, get one free froyo deal for in-store purchases AND double points for Real Rewards members.

I picked up more of the Yogurtland heart sticker sheets and tried the new heart gummy topping. The heart candies are cherry-flavored.

I also stopped by Menchie’s which had a BOGO free froyo deal, but I didn’t see the February flavors, so I decided to go to Menchie’s another day. Menchie’s is offering double points when you scan the Menchie’s app from 2/7 – 2/20/24.

I can’t understand any froyo shop that doesn’t acknowledge and celebrate National/International Frozen Yogurt Day.

You know you love me. In January 2024, Enlightened, known for healthy frozen desserts, launched a new line of frozen yogurt bark. The yogurt bark is made with Greek yogurt, chocolate, and freshly frozen fruit.

Available flavors:

Triple Berry (yogurt & white chocolate base with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)

Banana Peanut Butter (yogurt & dark chocolate base, peanut butter, topped with banana pieces)

Pineapple Coconut (yogurt & white chocolate base, fresh pineapple, shredded coconut).

I found all three varieties at Walmart in Rosemead, California. One bag is 4.75 oz and priced at $5.98 (with an MSRP of $6.99). The bark was next to the frozen fruit in the freezer section, not the ice cream and frozen yogurt products. The bark comes in resealable bags.

Triple Berry Frozen Yogurt Bark: The bark comes in small rectangles with small pieces of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries on top. The white chocolate flavor is stronger than the Greek yogurt flavor. The bark had an overwhelming chalkiness that I did not enjoy. The fruit added a little tang but there wasn’t enough fruit to add much flavor. The texture was firm and crunchy. It doesn’t melt quickly. I’ve made my own frozen yogurt bark (it’s so easy that anyone can do it) and it tasted much better.

They do recommend letting it thaw for 3 – 5 minutes before consumption. I waited four minutes. The bark wasn’t any better. It’s so chalky.

One serving is 2 – 4 pieces, 100 calories, 6g total fat, 9g total carbs, 8g total sugars, and 4g protein.

Check the Walmart.com website to see if your local Walmart carries Enlightened Frozen Yogurt Bark. Raley’s also carries the bark. But I recommend that you make your own froyo bark and add what you like to it.

2 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. Kalamaki Greek LA is a new Greek street food café in Los Angeles that started as a food truck in 2018. A brick & mortar restaurant opened last September in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles (Central LA). The menu includes gyros, skewers, salads, sides, Greek coffee, and Greek yogurt smoothies. In November 2023, they added Greek froyo to the café (but not to the food truck).
The owner of Kalamaki, Antonios Karagiannakis, is from Crete and he made Greek frozen yogurt when Greek froyo became huge in Greece. Then he was recruited to make Greek fresh and frozen yogurt for Go Greek in Beverly Hills.

Kalamaki specializes in authentic Greek street food made with Greek olive oil, Greek feta, etc. Choose from appetizers, skewers (chicken or pork), falafel, Greek salad, and gyro sandwiches (beef/lamb, beef, chicken or pork gyros). It’s not froyo but the Greek salad with gyros was excellent – very fresh ingredients, lots of feta, very flavorful.

I was more than a little disappointed that they were cleaning their froyo machines during the afternoon of my visit. I waited two hours and they only had one froyo flavor available.

On my second visit, they had all four flavors available.

Froyo flavors:

Mango

Plain: rich, smooth, tangy, lots of flavor, softer and creamier

Chocolate

Honey tahini: similar to the plain froyo only with the distinct taste of tahini (yellow sesame)

A small froyo is $11 with a choice of two toppings, while a large is $13 with three toppings. Greek fruit preserves, a hot dark chocolate crust, and hot Nutella crust are extra. The toppings looked healthier: hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, popping boba, fresh fruit, nuts, mochi, granola, coconut, sprinkles, etc.

It’s expensive but the froyo quality and taste are there.

Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring the food to your table. The café’s décor is reminiscent of Greece. The neon sign in front and the awning both say frozen yogurt (yay!)

They are understaffed at the moment, so expect a long wait.

You know you love me. Lots of Yogurtland news! Yogurtland is ready for Valentine’s Day with a new froyo flavor, returning froyo flavor, new topping, new Valentine’s themed stickers, and a new online exclusive cup. Last but not least, the details of Yogurtland’s National Frozen Yogurt Day offer have been revealed.
Yogurtland’s first new flavor of 2024 is Chocolate Hazelnut Lava Cake froyo. The lowfat froyo flavor is made with real hazelnuts and cocoa. It was rich in chocolate flavor but not overwhelmingly rich, sweet, or heavy. The hazelnut flavor was a nice addition – not too faint or strong. Recommended toppings: chocolate pirouline rolled wafer cookies, Oreos, and toffee bits.

Interestingly, Chocolate Hazelnut Lava Cake froyo is not Yogurtland’s first lava cake flavor. Back in August 2017, Yogurtland introduced Molten Lava Cake gelato.

They also brought back fan-favorite, Chocolate Covered Strawberry which was originally introduced in February 2022.

Featured flavors are available for a limited time only at participating Yogurtland locations, while supplies last.

I spotted the new topping, Sour Gummy Hearts. They come in red and white. I asked what flavor they were but the employee wasn’t sure.

The online exclusive creation, Sweet Lava Cup features Chocolate Hazelnut Lava Cake froyo, hand-sliced strawberries, and sour gummy hearts. Order it online from the Yogurtland website or the Yogurtland app.

The new Valentine’s sticker sheet features hearts, a Yogurtland spoon, a chocolate-dipped strawberry, etc. Ask for the stickers at the register. They’re free.

Finally, Yogurtland will celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Day on Tuesday, February 6, with a buy one cup, get one cup (equal or lesser value) for in-store guests. Real Rewards members will earn double points on any in-store order.

You know you love me. I recently found a new yogurt at Erewhon, from Green Table Café, a vegan eatery in Los Angeles. Greentable Yogurt is a plant-based almond yogurt that’s vegan, soy-free, kosher, organic, gluten-free, and probiotic. It’s made with no preservatives and no additives. Vegan almond yogurt is surprisingly hard to find.

I found Greentable Yogurt at Erewhon. The yogurt is sold in glass jars. One 16 oz jar was $10.99, regular price. There are two flavors: Unsweetened Plain, Vanilla sweetened with agave. The yogurt is Greek-style.

Vanilla Almond: The yogurt had a smooth, silky texture. I could definitely taste the almonds as well as the sourness and tang that you’d expect from lightly sweetened yogurt. The vanilla flavor was faint. The aftertaste was subtly sweet. The taste was pleasant. It’s not as rich as coconut or dairy-based yogurt but would be quite nice in smoothies or topped with fruit and granola. It’s not as thick as dairy-based Greek yogurt.

One ¾ cup serving is 140 calories, 9g total fat, 13g total carbs, 5g total sugars, and 6g protein.

You know you love me. I recently spotted Zero Brands Zero Added Sugar Fruit Cream Bars at Grocery Outlet in South Pasadena, California. Grocery Outlet had all three flavors: mango, strawberry, and triple berry, as well as the 12-bar variety pack that Costco carried. The 12-pack box was $7.99 and the 4-bar box was $3.99.

The Keto-friendly frozen cream bars have zero added sugar, zero artificial sweeteners, zero sugar alcohols, zero artificial flavors, and are gluten-free, kosher, and probiotic. Sweetened with allulose, monk fruit, and Stevia. The bars are made with real fruit, milk and cream from family-owned farms, chicory root fiber (a prebiotic with several health benefits), and olive oil (high in monosaturated fatty acids). Based on the cultures that they use, I don’t consider these bars to be frozen yogurt bars.

Triple Berry bar: The texture is excellent: firm but not too hard, creamy, and not icy in the least. I could taste the berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries) but the berry flavor wasn’t that strong. The berries were blended into the cream and milk. The blueberry flavor was the most noticeable. The bars do not taste like frozen yogurt. There is no tang or yogurt flavor. They taste like cream and berries, with more cream flavor than berry flavor. The flavor is sweet but not cloying. It does have a bit of the Stevia bitterness but it’s very mild. The bar is pretty good for a berries and cream bar.

One 58g bar is 70 calories, 4g total fat, 10g total carbohydrates, 2g total sugars, and 3g protein. The

Zero Brands is based in Scottsdale, Arizona and I think the cream bars are their first product. The product was launched in 2023. Use the store locator to find their bars.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. Menchie’s January's promotions include two new flavors and a Double Smiles Day when you scan the Menchie’s app on January 16. I also spotted a few signs for National Frozen Yogurt Day. Menchie’s will celebrate NFYD on February 6 with an all-day Buy One, Get One free froyo offer.
Back to the new flavors, I’ve only found one so far, Cinnamon Roll froyo. Cinnamon Roll froyo is called a new flavor. Menchie’s has had similar flavors in the past, including Cinnabon Classic Cinnamon Roll in 2014 and Cinnamon Bun froyo made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese in 2020. Cinnabon Classic Cinnamon Roll had a stronger cinnamon flavor than Cinnamon Bun froyo. As for the new Cinnamon Roll froyo, it had a strong cinnamon flavor. I thought I could even taste icing. It was a bit too strong and sweet for me, plus the texture was a bit icy (the texture could be creamier at other Menchie’s locations). Recommended toppings: almonds, walnuts, granola.

Cinnamon Roll froyo is nonfat and made with no artificial flavors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup.

Vegan rocky road made with almond milk is also a new flavor. It’s gluten-free, lowfat, dairy-free, and made with no artificial flavors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup. I’ll report back once I try the new Vegan Rocky Road flavor.

Update: Tried vegan rocky road flavor. It tasted like fudgsicle with a hint of almonds. I could not taste the marshmallow. It was fine, but I’m not a fan of rocky road the flavor. Recommended toppings: marshmallows, chopped almonds, Special Dark chocolate chips.

Double Smiles Day is Tuesday, January 16. Pinkberry’s first new flavor of 2024 is…Ube Honey frozen yogurt. This non-tart flavor has a striking dark purple hue. I tried a sample and it was decent but I didn’t want a cup of it. The flavor was sweet and slightly earthy and nutty. The dark color looked unnatural and unappetizing to me but it certainly is unique. Ube pairs well with coconut. The texture was light and smooth.

Ube is a purple yam from the Philippines that’s rich in antioxidants. It was named the 2024 flavor of the year by T. Hasewaga, the flavor house. I’ve had ube froyo before from other places and I’ve never been a fan.

Pinkberry recommends enjoying Ube Honey froyo with shaved coconut, honeycomb, and honey drizzle.

While my local Pinkberry had Ube Honey, they didn’t have the Ube Honey poster or signs (marketing materials).

You know you love me.
