Muusho Narine Armenian Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’m always on the lookout for yogurt. Recently, I spotted a new yogurt, Muusho Narine Armenian Yogurt, at The Market in Pasadena. What is Armenian yogurt, you ask. It contains a strain of bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus Er-2 strain 317/402 Narine, that was isolated and discovered in 1954 at the Laboratory of the Institute of Microbiology in Armenia. The strain was only available in Armenia and the Soviet Union for many years.

Muusho Narine Armenian Yogurt contains the Narine strain. The yogurt is made with a traditional Armenian recipe, using dairy from local farms. It contains no additives and no added sugar. It is high in protein and probiotics. Armenian yogurt is made with milk and a starter (plain yogurt with live cultures). The milk is heated and cooled. The starter is then added, and the mixture is incubated in a warm place to allow fermentation to take place. It is not strained.

Muusho Armenian dairy products can be found in Los Angeles in Armenian stores. Muusho launched in Los Angeles in 2024. The Narine yogurt product was introduced in July 2025.

Muusho Narine yogurt:
the texture was creamy, clumpy and soft, like your traditional unstrained yogurt. It’s made with milk and live active cultures. The yogurt is slightly sour and natural-tasting. I liked the simplicity of it. One tablespoon (15g) is 10 calories, with 0.5g total fat, 0g cholesterol, under 1g of sugar, and 0g protein. The jar is 130 calories.

A jar is 7 fl oz and $4.29 at The Market.

Is it any better than Straus European Style Yogurt? I haven’t had Straus in a long time, so I’m not sure.

THE MARKET: 1511 E Washington Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91104

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Ellenos NEW Pecan Pie Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Ellenos just introduced a new seasonal flavor, Pecan Pie, made with real pecan puree, Vermont maple syrup, Ellenos plain Greek yogurt, and Biscoff cookie crumble. I found it at Whole Foods in Pasadena for $2.69 on sale (regular price, $3.19).

Pecan Pie yogurt: The puree is on the bottom of the cup, topped by plain Greek yogurt. It’s rich, creamy, and tangy. The pecan flavor isn’t prominent, but it adds a pleasant nuttiness. And the best part might be the Biscoff cookie crumbs on top. All the components work well together and make it a more interesting cup of Greek yogurt. You’ve got the creamy, tangy yogurt, the crispy, buttery crumbs, and the nuttiness of the pecans. It’s so good!

One serving is 270 calories, 9g total fat, 25g total sugars, 12g protein, and 35g total carbs.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

La Fermière Yogurt & Dessert Experience Pop Up Shop Opens in Los Angeles

Fro-yo girl here. I visited the La Fermière pop up shop in Silver Lake (Los Angeles) today. The pop-up is open for four days, September 19 – 22. It’s a shopping opportunity but they also have a few fun events planned like personalized terracotta pots, fresh flower bouquet workshop, astrology and tarot card readings, and more.

You can shop for a wide selection of La Fermière yogurt (including some hard to find flavors like Matcha Lime and Hibiscus Raspberry), their creme desserts, La Fermière merch (bamboo lids, spoons, tote bags, stickers, clothing, yoga mats), and a special dessert (chocolate creme with olive oil and sea salt). I wasn’t sure what to expect but it seemed like a place to relax, shop, and have a sweet treat.

The space is beautiful and chic. They painted the exterior the color of a La Fermière blue pot. They package up your yogurt so nicely and even tie the bag with a ribbon. Service was amazing. The person I spoke to was very knowledgeable and could answer all my questions. I think all the employees were French! They gave me an extra pot, the one with my astrological sign that I've been looking for.

Their yogurt and creme desserts, made with French recipes, are all delicious and all natural. And the pots are too cute to throw away.

Pistachio creme dessert ($3.50): it was a perfect small treat, creamy and sweet (like creme brulee) without being heavy or cloying.

I love their yogurt, especially the pressed lemon, rose, and jasmine flavors.

2023 Pumpkin Yogurt Rankings

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve tasted and reviewed many pumpkin froyo brands, but this is my first pumpkin yogurt (non-frozen) taste-off. I started by buying the pumpkin flavors of yogurt brands that I like.

All of the yogurts that I selected contained real pumpkin with spices and they were all thick and creamy, though La Fermiere wasn't as thick since it isn't a Greek yogurt. But there were definite differences in the amount of pumpkin flavor, the amount of spices, and the pleasantness of the spice blends. Also, some yogurts had ingredients that weren't present in the other brands.

And the winner was...Ellenos Pumpkin Pie. This yogurt tasted a lot like a good pumpkin pie, and that was before I added the separate container of crunchy cookie crumble. Culina's pumpkin spice yogurt was the spiciest but it didn't taste like pumpkin pie. I would buy all of them again, except for the Trader Joe's pumpkin yogurt.

Here's a bit more about each yogurt, in order of their taste ranking.

#1) Ellenos Pumpkin Pie is a non-blended Greek yogurt made with whole milk. It comes with a separate compartment that contains a crunchy cookie crumble. Ellenos captured the true flavor of pumpkin pie, balancing spices, pumpkin, and tangy yogurt flavors. The cookie crumble tastes like buttery graham crackers. So good! One 7 oz serving is 330 calories; 13g total fat; 31g total sugars; 15g protein.

#2) La Fermiere Pumpkin Spice is a French style whole milk yogurt in a glass jar. The pumpkin puree is on the bottom. The pumpkin puree was too sweet but I did like the flavor of the puree, spices, and tangy yogurt. One 5.6 oz serving is 210 calories; 11g total fat; 22g total sugars; 4g protein.

#3) Culina Pumpkin Spice is a dairy-free coconut based blended Greek style yogurt. The strong nutmeg flavor with a hint of coconut was unique and different than the other yogurts. One 5 oz serving is 240 calories; 17g total fat; 11g total sugars; 2g protein.

#4) Noosa Pumpkin is an Australian style non-blended whole milk yogurt. It had a few ingredients not found in the other brands: honey and cream cheese and honey. It didn't have much spice and had a caramel-like flavor. One 8 oz serving is 280 calories; 12g total fat; 30g total sugars; 11g protein.

#5) Trader Joe's Pumpkin is a Greek nonfat yogurt. It had the least pumpkin flavor and reminded me of apple cider. One 5.3 oz serving is 130 calories; 0g total fat; 17 total sugars; 12g protein.

I did look for Chobani pumpkin yogurt but I only saw Chobani Zero Sugar pumpkin spice. I found all but Trader Joe's yogurt at Whole Foods. I was surprised that Whole Foods didn't have Siggi's Pumpkin & Spice skyr. I still hope to find it. It has less sugar than all the brands that I reviewed.

Chobani Zero Sugar Greek Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Chobani launched a zero sugar line of Greek yogurt back in June 2021. I did see it in stores, but the idea of yogurt sweetened with sugar alternatives didn’t appeal to me (e.g., I did not like Two Good Greek yogurt). But with all the new zero sugar products coming out, including Chobani’s new zero sugar line of yogurt drinks, I decided to give Chobani Zero Sugar yogurt a try. Chobani Zero Sugar has done well thanks to the interest in zero-sugar products.

Chobani Zero Sugar yogurt is made with filtered milk and only natural ingredients. It’s lactose-free and has live and active cultures. The main ingredients are ultra-filtered nonfat milk, water, and skim milk. It’s sweetened with allulose, stevia, and monk fruit.

I found Chobani Zero Sugar yogurt at Target for $1.25 on sale (regular price, $1.69). One cup is 5.3 oz.

Available flavors: Strawberry, Toasted Coconut Vanilla, Vanilla, Mixed Berry, Strawberry Cheesecake, Blueberry, Milk & Cookies, Key Lime Pie, Peach, Black Cherry, Pumpkin Spice, Raspberry, Lemon Meringue Pie

Milk & Cookies: It’s hard to imagine a cookie without sugar. The yogurt was thick and creamy. I was surprised by the whiteness of the yogurt and the lack of visible cookies. It did have a chocolate sandwich cookie flavor but it was more like a hint of cookie flavor. The yogurt seemed very sweet in an artificial way (yes, the sweeteners they use are natural but they have an aftertaste). The flavor was bland, very sweet, and chalky.

Vanilla: This one was smooth and creamy. It tasted sour, rotten, and sweet with a very heavy mouthfeel. It reminded me of glue. One serving is 60 calories, 0g total fat, 5g total carbs, 0g sugars, and 11g protein.

I don’t like Chobani Zero Sugar at all. I don’t think I can finish a cup of it.

1 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Noosa Greek Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Noosa has been known for its Australian (Aussie) style yogurt ever since I remember, so I was surprised when they introduced the Noosa Greek product line. It turns out that Noosa Greek is a rebranding of Noosa HiLo. I reviewed Noosa HiLo back in 2019 when it was introduced. The name and design have changed so that it’s clearly positioned as a Greek yogurt product. HiLo was high protein and low sugar but it was not called Greek yogurt. I liked HiLo but preferred the original Noosa line.

Noosa Greek comes in 5.3 oz cups with a more traditional cup shape. The flavors are blended and the high protein aspect is still emphasized. Noosa Greek is lower in sugar than the regular Noosa line.

I found Noosa Greek at Gelson’s in Sherman Oaks for $1.25 each (sale price) or $1.79 each, regular price.

Vanilla Bean: The yogurt looked different than it did when it was called HiLo. The HiLo version had vanilla bean specks and was thicker. Compared to the regular Noosa Vanilla Bean, Noosa Greek Vanilla Bean has a milder vanilla flavor and no wildflower honey and it’s smoother, less sweet, and not as thick. I still found it to be sweet enough but regular Noosa has more flavor and a better texture.

Strawberry: I didn’t see the strawberry bits that I found in Strawberry HiLo but the strawberry flavor was quite pronounced. The yogurt was thick and smoother than regular Noosa. It was definitely less sweet with a little sourness and tang. This or Mixed Berry was my favorite. It has a little honey.

Mixed Berry: Very nice, thick, tangy, and fruity. The fruit flavor wasn’t as pronounced/strong as regular Noosa. It was a bit sour and a bit tangy.

Blueberry: Seemed more watery and not as thick as Strawberry and Mixed Berry but it was tangier than both.

Available flavors: Plain, Mixed Berry, Peach, Strawberry, Blueberry, Vanilla Bean (the same flavors offered by Noosa HiLo)

One serving (vanilla bean) is 170 calories, 7g total fat, 14g total carbs, 12g protein and 12g sugars

Ingredients: Whole milk yoghurt (Grade A pasteurized milk, live active cultures), Vanilla blend (water, cane sugar, vanilla extract, natural flavor, pectin, locust bean gum, vanilla bean, lemon juice concentrate)

The size is just right for breakfast or a snack. Noosa Greek yogurt is almost as good as regular Noosa.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Cocojune Organic Cultured Coconut Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. The new coconut-based yogurt products keep coming. I recently found Cocojune on sale at Sprouts for $1.99 (regular price, $2.29). The shelf tag also said it was new. Cocojune’s line of organic cultured coconut yogurt is plant-based, vegan, probiotic (with billions of probiotics), non-GMO, pesticide free. The flavors also sounded interesting and appealing. One container is 4 oz (smaller than usual).

The paper cup is eco-friendly. They also claim to have better probiotics. “Our probiotics are science-backed. We’ve teamed up with a leading Danish culture bank to develop our probiotic blend. Each serving of cocojune comes with 30 billion CFU, and includes some of the world’s most researched probiotic strains, such as “BB-12” and “LA-5”. We believe in using cultures with proven potency, as not all strains are created equal.”

Available flavors: Pure Coconut, Vanilla Chamomile, Strawberry Rhubarb, Lemon Elderflower

Strawberry Rhubarb: The consistency was not as thick as Greek yogurt but the yogurt was pretty smooth after stirring. Flavorwise, I really liked how it tasted natural and tangy, and it wasn’t too sweet. The luxurious coconut cream flavor dominated but I could taste the strawberries too. The finish was clean and the berry/rhubarb flavor lingered. Wish it were thicker though. One serving is 15g total fat, 11g total carbs, 7g total sugars and 1g protein.

Lemon Elderfower: The Lemon Elderflower yogurt was a little clumpy because the cream seems to rise to the top. I recommend stirring. The consistency seemed a little thicker than the Strawberry Rhubarb. Lemon Elderflower was quite tangy and sourer than Strawberry Rhubarb. The floral hint of elderflower was pleasant and lingered. The lemon was lost in the sourness and the strong flavor of the coconut cream. One serving is 16g total fat, 10g total carbs, 7g total sugars and 1g protein. Ingredients: organic coconuts, spring water, organic elderflower, organic cane sugar, organic lemon juice, vitamin C, organic cassava root, organic carob bean gum, vegan probiotic cultures.

The verdict: Cocojune is one of the better coconut based yogurts available, second only to Culina.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

The Coconut Collaborative Plant-Based Yogurt Alternative Review

Fro-yo girl here. The Coconut Collaborative is one of the older coconut yogurt plant-based yogurt brands, founded in 2014 in London. It’s now the #1 premium coconut yogurt brand in Europe. In 2019, the company began producing their yogurt in the Los Angeles last year, after launching in the US the previous year.

Coconut Collaborative products are dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free and low in sugar. I bought mine at Gelson’s in La Canada Flintridge, CA for $2.29 each (regular price). One cup is 4.2 oz (smaller than average). The yogurt is rich, so the small size is good for a snack or light breakfast.

Vanilla: The yogurt looked a little clumpy when I peeled the foil off, but stirring made it quite smooth and very creamy. The yogurt was mildly tangy with a little sourness. The vanilla flavor was quite faint but the coconut flavor was strong. The aftertaste was a bit bitter. One cup is 160 calories, 13g total fat, 9g total carbs, 1g total sugars, and 2g protein. Ingredients: Coconut milk (coconut extract, coconut water, water), coconut water, corn starch, potato starch, pectin, natural vanilla flavor, vanilla bean, cultures.

Blueberry: I gave this yogurt a stir too. I liked it better than the vanilla because the blueberry flavor was stronger, though the coconut flavor was still strong. There were little blueberry pieces. It was a little sweeter than the Vanilla yogurt but still mildly tangy.

Available flavors: Mango & Passion fruit, Plain, Vanilla, Blueberry

The Coconut Collaborative yogurt alternative is widely distributed. You can find it at Sprouts, Target, Whole Foods, Erewhon, Bristol Farms, Safeway, etc. And Nekter just announced that their Energy Bowls are layered with The Collaborative's vanilla plant-based yogurt alternative.

4 out of 5 stars.

Culina Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I first spotted Culina Yogurt at Sprouts a few months ago, but it was pricey (over $4), so I didn’t get it. I finally found it at Lassens for $3.99. Surprisingly, Sprouts charges quite a bit more than Lassen's and Whole Foods. The packaging changed from the terracotta pots to clear glass jars. The jars look like the kind you’d use to make your own yogurt at home. One jar is 5 oz.

Based in Austin, Texas, Culina is a woman-owned business that makes thick, probiotic, fermented coconut yogurt. The plant-based, vegan, paleo yogurt has no gums, starches or fillers. I like how it’s made with a few ingredients and is all-natural. I also like the glass jar and the recipes that come with the jars of yogurt. I bet that it would make incredible frozen yogurt. I wish they offered more flavors.

* Strawberry Rose: I’ve tried my share of plant-based, dairy-free yogurt, and Culina’s is the best that I've tried. Thanks to the coconut cream, it’s rich and creamy. The fermentation provides that sour taste of dairy yogurt that’s often missing from plant-based yogurt. It’s truly thick and tangy. And they don’t mess it up by adding too much sugar. The texture was smooth though some separation had occurred (stir before consumption). So good! I could taste the strawberry and coconut, but I didn’t notice the rose oil though.

* Bourbon Vanilla: Also very good with mild vanilla flavor.

Available flavors: Plain & Simple, Bourbon Vanilla, Blueberry Lavender, Strawberry Rose

Ingredients (Strawberry Rose): Organic coconut, water, organic strawberries, organic maple syrup, agar, rose oil, probiotic cultures.

One serving of Strawberry Rose is 220 calories, 18g total fat, 11g carbs, 9g sugars, and 2g protein. The yogurt is high in fat but it’s worth the indulgence.

5 out of 5 stars.

La Fermière French Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I remember hearing about La Fermière French yogurt awhile ago and recently, they expanded their availability to Southern California. The yogurt and desserts company was founded in Marseille, France in 1952 and its products are available throughout Europe and more recently, in the US.

So, what is French yogurt? It’s custard style yogurt that’s made in small individual serving size pots. The ingredients are poured into the small pots and allowed to set, a process that takes a few hours. Oui by Yoplait introduced French style yogurt to the US in 2017.

La Fermière makes its yogurt in New York with local dairy and all-natural ingredients. The glass and terracotta pots are sustainable. They emphasize the quality and simplicity of the all-natural ingredients. The whole milk yogurt is gluten free and rbGH free. It’s free of chemical stabilizers, gelatin, preservatives, artificial coloring and high fructose corn syrup. For the fruit varieties, the fruit is on the bottom. They recommend NOT stirring the yogurt before consuming.

I found La Fermière at Gelson’s in La Canada Flintridge, CA for $2.99 each (regular price). They had five flavors. Interesting, the weight isn’t the same for all the flavors. In Southern California, you can also find La Fermière at Erewhon and select Jensen’s locations.

Vanilla Bean: The yogurt was smooth and creamy, with the consistency of a light custard. It had a fair amount of tang and was also fairly sweet. The vanilla flavor was mild and there was a cream like aftertaste. It was good but I wanted more vanilla flavor and less sugar. The texture sets it apart from most of the existing yogurt offerings in the US. I actually prefer Oui's Vanilla yogurt though - it's not as sweet and the vanilla flavor is more floral. Vanilla is Oui's best flavor.

One serving is 4.9 oz, 180 calories, 11g total fat, 18g total carbs, 17g total sugars, and 4g protein.

Ingredients: Pasteurized whole milk, pasteurized cream, cane sugar, natural vanilla flavor, live active cultures

Orange Blossom Honey: This was my favorite variety because of the flavor of the orange blossom honey. It was tangy, smooth, creamy and quite sweet. One serving is 4.9 oz, 190 calories, 11g total fat, 19g total carbs, 18g total sugars, and 4g protein. I even made froyo pops with the orange blossom honey yogurt. The pops weren’t as creamy as the refrigerated yogurt.

Ingredients: Pasteurized whole milk, pasteurized cream, orange blossom honey, live active cultures

Plain: This wasn’t as smooth as the other two varieties for some reason. It was of course less sweet and it also had a cream aftertaste. One serving (5.6 oz) was 160 calories, 13g total fat, 7g total carbs, 7g total sugars, and 5g protein.

Ingredients: Pasteurized whole milk, pasteurized cream, live active cultures.

The terracotta pots are stamped La Fermière and painted a lovely shade of periwinkle blue. The pots are safe in the microwave, freezer, and oven (up to 480 degrees). Previous limited edition pots included cute designs like hearts and flowers. Save them because I see a lot for sale, with some people asking for over $10 for one pot! Even their glass jars are being sold on eBay, but the terracotta pots are worth a lot more. You could even conceivably earn enough to cover the cost of the yogurt, though there are a lot for sale on eBay, so perhaps not.

Oui has cute glass pots too. They're striped for a limited time - in navy. Very chic. I sense a battle of the chic French yogurt pots. Oui has three new limited edition pot designs.

Available flavors: Plain, Pressed Lemon, Orange Honey Blossom, Vanilla Bean, Raspberry Blueberry, Mango Passion Fruit, Pineapple Coconut and Apple Kiwi. Seasonal flavors are also offered.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Noosa Blended Yoghurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I used to prefer blended yogurt, because it saved you the extra step of having to stir your yogurt and the compote or whatever was on the bottom always seemed too sweet. My feelings changed once I started eating Noosa. I grew to appreciate the fact that it wasn’t already blended because you gently swirl the compote and have bites that tasted different.

I was surprised when Noosa recently launched a line of blended yogurt called Blended Noosa. I found Blended Noosa at Whole Foods (Glendale, CA) for $1.49 each. A cup is 4.5 oz, so it’s smaller than regular Noosa. It’s about the right size for a snack. One tub of Noosa Blended Strawberry is 150 calories with 6g fat, 19g total carbs, 18g sugars, and 6g protein.

Strawberry: Creamy, thick, tangy, super flavorful, smooth, a few tiny strawberry pieces. Just as good as the unblended. In fact, it seems the same only smaller and blended for you.

Mixed Berry: Made with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries, the mixed berry yogrt is not as tangy or as flavorful as the strawberry, but still tasty. It has the same amount of sugar as the strawberry. In color (pale purple) and flavor, it reminded me the most of blueberry. I could see a few tiny berry bits.

Ingredients (Strawberry): Grade A Pasteurized Whole Milk, Fruit Purée (Strawberries, Water, Cane Sugar, Natural Flavors, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Fruit and Vegetable Juice [for color]), Cane Sugar, Wildflower Honey, Kosher Gelatin, Pectin, Live Active Cultures.

Available flavors: Strawberry, Mixed Berry, Raspberry, Key Lime, Coffee, Vanilla Bean

So Delicious Coconutmilk Yogurt Alternative Review

Fro-yo girl here. Yes, it’s another coconut milk yogurt review. So Delicious offers oat milk and coconut milk-based yogurt alternatives. For the coconut milk line, they have Pairings (yogurt and toppings) and yogurt without toppings. I found So Delicious Coconutmilk Yogurt at Target on sale for 4 for $5 or $1.79 regular price. One cup is 5.3 oz. The yogurt is gluten free, non-GMO verified and vegan. It’s made with organic coconut.

Vanilla: It was surprisingly similar to regular dairy yogurt in terms of texture and flavor. The yogurt was quite tangy, soft and creamy, but also very sweet. The coconut flavor was quite mild. The texture wasn’t quite as smooth as regular yogurt but it was soft and stirring helped reduce the clumpiness. One serving is 130 calories with 4g total fat, 22g carbohydrates, 2g fiber, and 15g total sugars. Ingredients: Organic coconutmilk (filtered water, organic coconut cream), organic cane sugar, rice starch, natural flavor, calcium citrate, pectin, locust bean gum, citric acid, live and active cultures, vitamin D2, vitamin B12.

Key lime: Wow, this was super flavorful and very tangy. They must have added a lot of lime juice. The hint of coconut complemented the lime.

Available flavors: Peach, Key Lime, Blueberry, Chocolate, Plain, Strawberry Banana, Raspberry, Strawberry, Unsweetened Plain, Unsweetened Vanilla, Pineapple Brulee, Vanilla.

4 out of 5 stars.

Le Grand Plant-Based Yogurt Alternative Review

Fro-yo girl here. I found another new plant-based yogurt at Bristol Farms. Le Grand plant-based yogurt alternative is from a Canadian plant-based brand that also makes sauces and soups. The yogurt comes in 4 oz plastic cups and has no added flavors, is organic, and has over 5 billion live cultures per serving. Bristol Farms was selling Le Grand Yogurt Alternative for $1.99 each.

Le Grand Yogurt Alternative was introduced at Expo East 2019 last fall and will be at Expo West 2020 in March. It’s made with cashews, coconut cream, rice, and cacao butter.

Creamy Vanilla: The texture was unusual. It was like a very firm gelatin. Even stirring vigorously did not soften the yogurt much. The texture was grainy too. The flavor was mild and nutty – not bad, but on the bland side. The texture was the main drawback. Also, there was no tang. 3 out of 5 stars.

Creamy Lemon: This was a bit softer than the Vanilla and also tasted a lot better because the lemon was bright and tangy. It had a clean, light flavor with a hint of nuttiness. 4 out of 5 stars.

One serving of Lemon yogurt is 110 calories, 4.5g total fat, 17g total carbs, 2g protein, and 9g total sugars. Ingredients: Filtered water, rice, cane sugar, cashews, lemon, coconut cream, cacao butter, sea salt, live active cultures.

Available flavors: Lemon, Vanilla, Raspberry, Unsweetened, Mixed Berries

Kite Hill Almond Milk Greek Style Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Kite Hill’s line of almond milk based Greek style yogurt provides a protein-rich, plant-based alternative for yogurt eaters. I found Kite Hill Almond Milk Greek Style yogurt at Whole Foods. One 5.3 oz cup was 3/$5 on sale or $1.99 regular price. Like other Kite Hill products, the Greek Style yogurt is made from live cultures, contains no artificial flavors of preservatives, non-GMO, vegan, kosher, soy-free and gluten-free.

* Vanilla Unsweetened: Ugh, it was so terrible that I could not finish it. The texture was thick but in a strange way, as if it were finely ground almond meal. The flavor was sour but also sweet. It tasted bitter and upleasant. I can’t see it being good in a smoothie or in anything.

One cup is 160 calories, 10g total fat, 8g total carbs, 11g protein, and 2g total sugars. Ingredients: Almond milk (water, almonds), natural flavors, tapioca starch, pectin, locust bean gum, agar, vanilla beans, live active cultures

Available flavors: Plain Unsweetened, Vanilla Unsweetened, Strawberry, Blueberry, Peach

2 out of 5 stars.

Tadashizen Nomu Yogurto Japanese Yogurt Drink Review

Fro-yo girl here. It’s been a year since my trip to Japan and one of my fond memories of the trip was the delicious tiny Japanese yogurt drink I found at the rest stop. I found something similar at Mitsuwa in San Gabriel, CA. Tiny Japanese yogurt drinks! These were called Tadashizen Nomu and they were imported from Japan, flash frozen to extend shelf life.

One bottle was 150 ml, 90 calories, 4g fat, 10g sugars. There was one flavor, plain, and the plastic bottle looked like an old-fashioned milk pail. One bottle was $2.59.

Tadashizen Nomu yogurt drink: It’s a thinner yogurt drink, but thicker than milk. I really like the tang – it tastes like real yogurt and it’s even sour, but not overwhelmingly so. It doesn’t taste like Yakult (yay!)

Mitsuwa also had yogurt and cheesecake from the same Japanese farm.

Ingredients: Milk, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, isomaltooligosaccharides, milk product, lactic acid

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

Aldi’s Friendly Farms Skyr Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I was at Aldi the other day when I spotted their new limited time offering, Friendly Farms Icelandic Style Skyr Yogurt. One cup is 5.3 oz and 99 cents. There were three flavors: Vanilla, Strawberry, and Blueberry. The fruit flavors are blended.

Vanilla: The amount of sugar, 8g, is comparable to Siggi’s but Friendly Farms vanilla skyr tastes sweeter to me though the aftertaste is sour, tangy and a little chalky. I could see some vanilla bean specks. The texture was thick and smooth. The aftertaste lingers. I prefer Siggi’s.

Strawberry: The strawberry flavor is mild and the texture was lighter and smoother than the vanilla skyr. I could see some strawberry seeds. The skyr brings out the sourness of the strawberries. I liked it better than the vanilla skyr because it was tangier.

Blueberry: The blueberry skyr had a stronger fruit flavor than the strawberry and even some tiny blueberries. It was still tangy but not as sour. The blueberry skyr was my favorite.

Friendly Farms skyr is made with milk from cows that haven’t been treated with rBST. The skyr is nonfat. One serving of Blueberry skyr has 120 calories, 0g fat, 15g carbohydrates, 15g proteins, and 10g sugars.

Ingredients (Blueberry): Cultured pasteurized nonfat grade A milk, sugar, blueberries, blueberry puree, corn starch, natural flavors, pectin, live active cultures.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Non-Dairy Chobani Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Dairy-free continues to be all the rage. Chobani, the #1 Greek yogurt in the US, just introduced its first plant-based product, Non-Dairy Chobani. Chobani describes Non-Dairy Chobani as “a delicious, non-dairy coconut-based blend packed with probiotics and made with 25% less sugar than other non-dairy alternatives. It’s the perfect non-dairy choice, made the Chobani Way: with only natural ingredients and real fruit for a creamy texture and refreshing taste.” It’s non-GMO, soy-free, and gluten-free.

I found Non-Dairy Chobani at Sprouts in Alhambra, CA. The retail price was $2.49 and the sale price was $2.29. One cup is 5.3 oz, typical for yogurt. I like the leafy green packaging, a good visual representation for something plant-based. It’s interesting and even a bit strange that Chobani doesn’t call Non-Dairy Chobani yogurt.

Slightly Sweet Plain: Since this is the lowest sugar flavor, it caught my eye and interest. I’ve had coconut-based non-dairy yogurt before, but other brands. While COYO was too thick and rich, Dairy-Free Chobani suffers the opposite problem – it’s not thick enough. The texture is a little strange – liked thickened cream that’s almost gelatinous, something that’s obviously been thickened with additives. But I liked the overall mild coconut flavor (I don’t like coconuts) and the fact that it was less sweet. I suspect that Plain is the best Non-Dairy Chobani flavor. One serving is 130 calories, 8g fat, 16g carbs, 7g sugars, 2g fiber, and 1g protein.

Strawberry: This is a blended flavor. I could taste the strawberry and the coconut. The strawberry flavor was stronger. The flavor was fine but too sweet since it didn’t have any sourness or tanginess. One serving has 140 calories, 7g fat, 19g carbs, 11g sugars, 2g fiber, and 1g protein.

Ingredients (Strawberry): Cultured coconut blend (water, coconut, tapioca flour, agar, cultures), cane sugar, strawberries, water, chicory root fiber, lemon juice concentrate, natural flavors, fruit pectin, fruit and vegetable juice concentrate (for color), locust bean gum

Available flavors of Single Serve Cups: Blueberry, Peach, Slightly Sweet Plain, Strawberry, and Vanilla

Available flavors of Single Serve Drinks: Mango, Slightly Sweet Plain, Strawberry, and Vanilla Chai

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Two Good Greek Lowfat Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I first saw Two Good Greek yogurt a few months ago. Since it’s made with stevia, I was reluctant to try it, but curiosity and convenience finally got the better of me. Target had Two Good yogurt for $1.77. Two Good is part of the Light & Fit line by Danone North America. It’s lowfat and non-GMO verified. The yogurt was introduced because of growing demand for low sugar products. I’m all for low sugar products, since so many foods seem too sweet to me, but I don’t like the taste of stevia. While it I plant-based, it doesn’t taste natural to me.

Dannon describes Two Good as “a thick and creamy blended yogurt with 2 grams of total sugar per serving and a taste you'll love, with 12 grams of high-quality protein and 80 calories per 5.3 oz serving.” They also say that Two Good has “85% less sugar than average yogurts.” Two Good is different than other types of Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is typically strained and the process removes some of the dairy sugar. Two Good has a patented slow-straining process; it is made out of strained liquid yogurt and the straining of liquid yogurt removes even more sugar. No sugar is added, but they do add a touch of stevia.

Available flavors: Strawberry, Peach, Blueberry, Vanilla, Mixed Berry

* Vanilla yogurt: The yogurt smelled like sugar substitute. It was sweet, whipped, and smooth. It’s odd to say this, but it was too sweet for me. The sweet aftertaste lingered. There are two low sugar camps: people who want low sugar products that taste as sweet as regular sugar products and people who want low sugar products that actually taste less sweet. I’m definitely in the latter group, whereas this product is for the former group. That said, it’s not horrible. I’d have to add tangy fruit, but I could eat this yogurt because it is mild.

Ingredients (vanilla yogurt): Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, water, contains less than 1% of tapioca starch, natural flavors, lemon juice concentrate, gellan gum, stevia leaf reb 1, fruit and vegetable juice concentrate (for color), sea salt, active yogurt cultures L. Bulgaricus & S. Thermophilus

Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. A few months ago, Chobani rolled out its new line of low sugar, high protein Greek yogurt, called A Hint of…, across the US. Recently, they added lower sugar mix-in style Greek yogurt (similar to their Flips) which I spotted at Target. The sign said New at Target, so the product line extension must be pretty new. Also, it says “New” on the packaging.

Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt is $1.19 each. It’s made with 2% lowfat milk and has “30% less sugar than other mix-in yogurts.” One cup is 4.5 oz. It’s Kosher and all natural.

Available flavors: Raspberry Chocolate Crunch, Lemon Cookie Crunch, Vanilla Mocha Crunch, Mango Coconut Crunch, Honey Pistachio Crunch

* Vanilla Mocha Crunch: This item features Madagascar vanilla & cinnamon lowfat Greek yogurt with biscotti pieces, mocha brownies & hazelnuts. The yogurt is smooth and has a mild, light vanilla flavor. It's thick but not as thick as skyr. The cinnamon flavor is even more subtle. It has a little sourness but it’s still sweet (but not too sweet). The toppings add sweetness and crunch. The brownies were tiny and firm. The biscotti was more like a crumble. One cup is 140 calories, 4.5g fat, 12g sugars, and 10g protein.

* Lemon Cookie Crunch: This item features Fino lemon lowfat Greek yogurt with lemon cookie crumble and white chocolate chunks. The yogurt was smooth, sweet and tangy. The lemon flavor tasted different, maybe because it’s Fino lemon. I liked that there was a tartness but I’m used to the Fino lemon flavor.

Ingredients (Vanilla Mocha Crunch): Cultured pasteurized nonfat milk, cream, live and active cultures, cane sugar, water, hazelnuts, wheat flour, wheat starch, sunflower oil, milk, natural flavors, coffee powder, milk protein, fruit pectin, chocolate, cocoa butter, locust bean gum, guar gum, cinnamon, lemon juice concentrate, soy lecithin, vanilla extract, salt

Culinary Tours Icelandic Style Skyr Review

Fro-yo girl here. Stater Bros. Market recently opened its first location in Pasadena. Of course, I had to see if I could find new frozen yogurt or yogurt products to try. And I found a new line of Icelandic style yogurt, aka skyr, that I hadn’t seen before, Culinary Tours. Culinary Tours products are carried by a variety of retailers, but the only one around here (Southern California) on the list is Stater Bros.

Stater Bros. was selling Culinary Tours Icelandic Style Skyr for 79 cents on sale. The regular price is 99 cents. That’s definitely cheap for skyr, which tends to be more expensive. One cup is 5 oz and contains at least 14g of protein. It’s made with whole milk and all-natural ingredients.

Available flavors: Coconut, Blueberry, Strawberry, Key Lime, Vanilla, Plain

  • Vanilla: I didn’t have high expectations because of the low price, but I was pleasantly surprised by this yogurt. I noticed some small clumps but when I stirred the yogurt, it was smooth, thick, and extra glossy. I saw plenty of vanilla bean specks. It wasn’t too sweet but had a sour flavor and sour aftertaste that I actually enjoy. Of the three flavors I tried, this one had the least sugar and it was the thickest. It was also the one I liked the best. One serving had 150 calories, 5g total fat, 12g total carbohydrates, 10g sugars, and 15g protein.
  • Blueberry: This was the second best flavor. The blueberry yogurt was very thick and tangy, with an underlying sourness. It was a little chalky but the blueberry flavor was quite noticeable. I could see tiny bits of blueberry skin from the blueberry puree.
  • Key Lime: Of the three flavors that I tried, this had the most sugar and the least yogurt intensity. It was sweeter but still tangy. The fruit flavor was not as strong.

Ingredients (vanilla): Grade A whole milk, grade A skim milk, sugar, vanilla extract, vanilla bean, live and active cultures.

The list of ingredients is short and simple.

For some reason, there’s very little information about this product online. It’s not even listed on the Culinary Tours website.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
