Tadashizen Nomu Yogurto Japanese Yogurt Drink Review

Fro-yo girl here. It’s been a year since my trip to Japan and one of my fond memories of the trip was the delicious tiny Japanese yogurt drink I found at the rest stop. I found something similar at Mitsuwa in San Gabriel, CA. Tiny Japanese yogurt drinks! These were called Tadashizen Nomu and they were imported from Japan, flash frozen to extend shelf life.

One bottle was 150 ml, 90 calories, 4g fat, 10g sugars. There was one flavor, plain, and the plastic bottle looked like an old-fashioned milk pail. One bottle was $2.59.

Tadashizen Nomu yogurt drink: It’s a thinner yogurt drink, but thicker than milk. I really like the tang – it tastes like real yogurt and it’s even sour, but not overwhelmingly so. It doesn’t taste like Yakult (yay!)

Mitsuwa also had yogurt and cheesecake from the same Japanese farm.

Ingredients: Milk, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, isomaltooligosaccharides, milk product, lactic acid

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

Morinaga Hi Chew Premium Yogurt Japanese Candy Review

Fro-yo girl here. I recently spotted a new yogurt flavored candy imported from Japan at Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa, CA. They only had one flavor, plain. The manufacturer is Morinaga, the makers of Hi-Chew (I love Hi-Chew). The candy comes in a small plastic pouch with the word Premium on the front.

One pouch is $1.99, 1.23 oz with 140 calories. It’s in the Hi-Chew product family but it looks different from the typical Hi-Chew. Each candy is a flattened oval shape, white in color. It is firm and chewy with a thin yogurt coating. The texture is similar to Hi-Chew, so it’s very chewy. The thin outer coating is sweet. The chewy interior has a creamy, Yakult like flavor. It’s good but I’m not a fan of Yakult flavor which is more sweet than tangy. It also tastes artificial. I really like the candy's texture though.

Ingredients: corn syrup, sugar, glucose, palm oil, concentrated yogurt, gelatin, cream, high fructose corn syrup, milk sauce, pectin, citric acid, artificial flavor.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Shingomura Nomu Yogurt Drink Review

Fro-yo girl here. I recently spotted an imported Japanese yogurt drink while shopping at Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa, CA. They only had one flavor, plain. It was frozen and sold in little plastic bottles. One bottle was $2.99, 150ml, with 90 calories and 4g of fat.

I defrosted the drink and tried it. It was a lot better than Yakult. It didn’t that Yakult flavor at all but it tasted more like lightly sweetened plain yogurt. It was sweet, thick and a little tangy. The flavor was more mild than the other yogurt drinks I’ve had.

The bottle didn’t say anything about live and active cultures.

Ingredients: milk, oligosaccharide, milk product

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

US Launch of Mochicream Ice

Fro-yo girl here. Mochicream is a Japanese dessert that’s basically mochi with different fillings often involving whipped cream and jam. Mochicream Mochi Cream Ice is a newer mochi product; the mochi has an ice cream filling.

Mochicream could only be purchased from J.sweets retail stores when it first reached the US. Since there are only four of these (in San Jose, Torrance, Costa Mesa and Irvine), this meant that the availability of Mochicream in the US was extremely limited. The mochi are made in Japan.

Recently I was shopping at Mitsuwa San Gabriel and I spotted Mochicream in the freezer. The Mochicream treats are now individually wrapped and 10 flavors are available (e.g., Chocobanana, Chocomint, Tiramisu, Matcha au Lait, etc. One Mochicream is $2.49. They had one yogurt flavor, blueberry yoghurt.

* Blueberry Yoghurt Mochicream: This was not the same as the blueberry yoghurt Mochicream I had a few years back (that one had whipped cream in the center, this one had blueberry jam). The thin glutinous rice shell is soft, sweet and chewy. The “ice” filling was creamy and the blueberry jam had an intense blueberry flavor. I didn’t taste the yogurt flavor but the mochi was very tasty. One mochi is 2.19 ozs and 170 calories.

Ingredients: Blueberry jam, sugar, cream, milk product powdered, glutinous rice, sweetened condensed milk, skim milk powder, polydextrose dextrin, powdered oil, gelatin, glucose, millet jelly, starch, salt, etc.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Wakayama Sangyo Yogurt Jelly Review

Fro-yo girl here. While shopping at Mitsuwa I came across a big tub of Japanese strawberry yogurt jelly from Wakayama Sangyo Zao. A 14.11 oz tub of strawberry yogurt jelly was $3.29.

* Strawberry yogurt jelly: The yogurt was soft in texture and it had a mild strawberry flavor with big pieces of strawberry throughout. It tasted like a strawberry yogurt drink. It was a little bland but I liked how it wasn’t super sweet.

Ingredients: Sugar, strawberries, vegetable oil, milk powder, etc.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Mochicream: Yoghurt Mochi

Fro-yo girl here. Mochicream, a new kiosk inside Mitsuwa features gourmet mochi shipped from Japan. These chilled mochis are filled and come in 24 flavors, from traditional (black sesame, red bean, green tea, sakura) to creative kinds (caramel pudding, caramel macchiato, apple pie, honey cranberry, rum raisin). The price ranged from $1.80 to $2.30 each.

Small but plump, the mochi are individually wrapped in a plain sheet of clear plastic. They’re meant to be eaten 10 - 15 minutes after you purchase them (the sign said to be consumed on the day of purchase). These aren’t ice cream mochi. They’re more closely related to the fresh or refrigerated bean filled mochi that you can find at your local Japanese grocery store.

They had two yogurt/yoghurt flavors.

* Blueberry yoghurt ($1.90): A sweet, smooth bean filling that’s flavored with a hint of blueberry, surrounding a center of a light, slightly tangy whipped yogurt cream. The thin glutinous rice shell is tender and chewy.
* Peach yoghurt ($1.90): Similar to the blueberry yoghurt only with a peach flavored bean filling. The peach had a more perfume like flavor than the blueberry, pleasant and subtle.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
