New Flavors at Menchie’s: HI-CHEW Passion Fruit & HI-CHEW Mango, Swirl Them Together to Make a HI-CHEW Tropical Smoothie

Fro-yo girl here. Remember last July when Menchie’s came out with HI-CHEW Dragon Fruit frozen yogurt? They even gave out samples of the new HI-CHEW Dragon Fruit candy with a HI-CHEW coupon. This summer, Menchie’s has come out with new HI-CHEW froyo flavors, two of them: Mango and Passion Fruit. Swirled them together for a HI-CHEW Tropical Smoothie in your cup.

To try the new flavor, I had to travel out to Granada Hills. The Menchie’s locations in San Fernando Valley are better than the ones in San Gabriel Valley. The ones in SGV don’t even have the Best Friends spoons yet, let alone any of the new HI-CHEW flavors.

The Granada Hills Menchie’s had samples of HI-CHEW Tropical Smoothie candy and coupons. The online coupon code is MENCHIES. Cute. The candy, which combines two separate flavors, was really good – very chewy with bursts of sweet mango and a tangier passion fruit flavor. I’ve been a long-time fan of HI-CHEW, though I don’t eat as much candy as I used to. HI-CHEW is like Starburst with better flavors and I think it’s a bit softer and chewier.

  • HI-CHEW Mango: It did taste like the HI-CHEW Mango candy, so it was quite sweet. The texture was icier, more like a sorbet than a frozen yogurt – even though it’s not a sorbet. It was too sweet for me. One of the reasons I like HI-CHEW the candy is the chewy texture. The froyo version loses that, of course. HI-CHEW Mango is nonfat. Recommmended toppings: Mango, mochi for chewiness, popping boba.
  • HI-CHEW Passion Fruit – not available yet in Granada Hills

According to the Menchie’s website, ““When you swirl HI-CHEW Mango and HI-CHEW Passion Fruit you get a tasty summer treat. These nonfat flavors are made with no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no high fructose corn syrup, and they are gluten-free.”

FYI, Menchie’s Granada Hills is currently full service.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

When warm-weather adventures lead to the search for cooling treats, these new frozen yogurt flavors create a bright and refreshing taste reminiscent of classic, tropical drinks on the beach, no matter the location. The limited-edition offerings take inspiration from one of HI-CHEW™'s newest flavors, Tropical Smoothie, which debuted earlier this year within the Fruit Combos mix. The Menchie's team and HI-CHEW™ confectionary experts worked to honor the double layer and true-to-fruit flavors of Mango and Passion Fruit to bring these creations to life.

This collaboration is the second between HI-CHEW™ and Menchie's. The two brands first teamed up in July 2019 to create HI-CHEW™ Dragon Fruit Frozen Yogurt, a sweet yet tart treat inspired by the fan favorite HI-CHEW™ Dragon Fruit flavor. This year's new frozen yogurt additions continue to creatively showcase HI-CHEW™ while elevating the collaboration with the option to swirl.

"The idea of layering two flavors together to create something new was integral to the development of HI-CHEW™ Tropical Smoothie, and seeing the product brought to life in an unexpected way is exciting for us," said Tatsuya Takamiya, Chief Marketing Officer of Morinaga America, Inc. "We're thrilled that consumers can enjoy the true-to-fruit taste of HI-CHEW™ through these frozen yogurt flavors while celebrating the innovative dual layers of the Tropical Smoothie chewlet."

Morinaga Yogurt Caramel Review

Fro-yo girl here. I found a new yogurt candy at Nijiya Market in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Morinaga Yogurt Caramel is imported from Japan. One box is 2.07 oz with 12 individually wrapped square caramels. This flavor is limited edition. Nijiya was selling Morinaga caramels for $2.19 a box.

One serving (the entire box) is 241 calories, 4.5g total fat, 34g sugars, and 47g total carbohydrates.

The caramel was soft, creamy, and chewy. It had a tangy sweet yogurt flavor that reminded me of Yakult. I like firmer caramels. It seemed cloyingly sweet to me.

Ingredients: Sugar syrup, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, sweetened defatted condensed milk powder, vegetable oil, hydrolyzed wheat protein, butter, concentrated yogurt, sorbitol, citric acid, artificial flavor, soy lecithin

3 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Morinaga ALOVE Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Morinaga introduced a new Japanese style yogurt called ALOVE Yogurt at Natural Products EXPO West in March 2017. The new line of yogurt comes in three flavors: Original Aloe, Strawberry and Blueberry. It’s the first Japanese style aloe vera yogurt offered in the US.

Morinaga describes their yogurt as “a delicious and nutritious, kosher-certified yogurt snack that offers a good source of protein and calcium, with no artificial flavors. Made in the U.S. from locally sourced California milk, the product contains zero high-fructose corn syrup, is gluten-free and does not contain aloin. ALOVE is made via Morinaga’s proprietary process; fresh aloe is removed from the aloe plant leaves, leaving only the best and tastiest parts, and then mixed into creamy yogurt.”

The key selling point of this yogurt is the addition of aloe, which is considered by some to have many health benefits, such as supporting digestion and the immune system, promoting hair growth, lowering cholesterol and detoxification. Aloe drinks have become more popular and it’s sometimes added to tea drinks at Asian boba shops.

I found ALOVE Yogurt at Good Fortune Supermarket in Monrovia, CA. They had all three flavors. One 6 oz cup was $1.48 on sale, $1.99 regular price. ALOVE Yogurt doesn’t appear to be strained, so it has a runny consistency. The tiny bits of aloe vera gel are soft and lightly sweet; they add texture and heft. It has live and active cultures.
  • Original aloe: This had the strongest aloe flavor, so this was the flavor that I liked the best. Aloe has a mild, sweet flavor. The yogurt was pretty tangy though not sour. One serving is 150 calories, with 4g total fat, 23g carbohydrates, 18g total sugars, and 6g of protein.
  • Blueberry: The blueberry flavor comes from blueberry juice, so it’s noticeable but not very strong.
  • Strawberry: The strawberry flavor was mild. The aloe flavor makes it a bit different.
I wasn’t used to the thin, runny consistency. The yogurt wasn’t that different except for the aloe. If you really like aloe or believe in its health benefits, I recommend trying it.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Morinaga Hi Chew Premium Yogurt Japanese Candy Review

Fro-yo girl here. I recently spotted a new yogurt flavored candy imported from Japan at Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa, CA. They only had one flavor, plain. The manufacturer is Morinaga, the makers of Hi-Chew (I love Hi-Chew). The candy comes in a small plastic pouch with the word Premium on the front.

One pouch is $1.99, 1.23 oz with 140 calories. It’s in the Hi-Chew product family but it looks different from the typical Hi-Chew. Each candy is a flattened oval shape, white in color. It is firm and chewy with a thin yogurt coating. The texture is similar to Hi-Chew, so it’s very chewy. The thin outer coating is sweet. The chewy interior has a creamy, Yakult like flavor. It’s good but I’m not a fan of Yakult flavor which is more sweet than tangy. It also tastes artificial. I really like the candy's texture though.

Ingredients: corn syrup, sugar, glucose, palm oil, concentrated yogurt, gelatin, cream, high fructose corn syrup, milk sauce, pectin, citric acid, artificial flavor.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Candy Review: Morinaga Yogurt Hi-Chew

Fro-yo girl here. Hi-Chew has long been one of my favorite candies. It’s similar to Starburst but firmer, creamier, chewier and with better flavors. Over 113 different Hi-Chew flavors have been developed, including several yogurt flavors. While I found images of yogurt flavored Hi-Chew online, I hadn’t encountered the candy in the stores I visited till now.

Yogurt Hi-Chew comes in a 1.94 oz. pack with 12 individually wrapped pieces for $1.69 at Mitsuwa San Gabriel.

The taste reminds me of a yogurt drink like Yakult. It’s primarily sweet but also a bit tangy. The texture is the firm and chewy like a caramel. It’s very similar to Meiji’s Yogurt Caramels. I think the Meiji caramel is milkier and tastes a bit better than Yogurt Hi-Chew.

Ingredients: Millet Jelly, Gelatin, Sugar, Palm Oil, Concentrated Yogurt, Gelatin, Skim Milk, Yogurt Powder, Citric Acid, Lecithin

Amazon lists grape, green apple and honey apple as flavors of Yogurt Hi-Chew but doesn’t sell any of these flavors. Asianfoodgrocer.com has Yogurt Hi-Chew listed but is currently out of stock.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
