Fro-yo Shop Innovators

Fro-yo girl here. My last post about the new fro-yo hot spots (cities) in 2009 made me want to recognize a few special fro-yo shops that have been innovators in the field of tart fro-yo. These innovators offered something unique long before others in the area caught on. While they didn't invent fro-yo, they created something memorable and special in the field of fro-yo. In no particular order, the shops are:

* BERRYLINE (BOSTON, MA): Now with three locations in the Boston area, BerryLine creates unique flavors like Nutella, Banana, Oreo and Apple Cinnamon. They originally opened in September 2007 and brought tart fro-yo to Boston. You can even send your friend a cup of BerryLine via your cell phone at http://www.kangogift.com/SendGift.aspx?id=133
* STARFRUIT (CHICAGO, IL): They introduced frozen kefir to the US market. Currently Starfruit has three locations in the Chicago area. Frozen kefir looks just like soft serve fro-yo and Starfruit offers similar toppings. The concept was created by Lifeway, the country's leading manufacturer of kefir.
* SNO:LA (BEVERLY HILLS, CA): Sno:la's fro-yo tastes like no one else's - it's intense, sour and barely sweetened. It's made without any refined sugars, with organic dairy and seasonal fruits. The mochi can't be missed. Sno:la is eco-friendly and 1% of their gross proceeds go to the Slow Food movement.
* CULTURE ORGANIC FROZEN YOGURT (PALO ALTO, CA): Culture stays busy inventing new fro-yo flavors, fro-yo creations (Yo'wiches) and fro-yo toppings. They even had frozen kefir for awhile. Mary, the brilliant toppings-in-chief bakes up a storm including crumbles, mini meringue cookies, brownies, etc. She made marshmallow creme and flaxseed cones. Everything is organic and eco-friendly. No one else offers all organic toppings.
* FRAICHE FROZEN YOGURT (PALO ALTO, CA): They make their own yogurt with organic milk. And they make their own fro-yo. Though it took them awhile to offer mochi, their mochi was worth the wait. The new SF location is gorgeous and both locations also offer delicious baked goods. They're also famous for offering fresh chocolate shavings (shaved to order).
* MOCHII YOGURT (SACRAMENTO, CA): Mochii Yogurt brought delicious, handcrafted mochi and tart fro-yo to Sacramento back in 2007. The array of mochi flavors is awe-inspiring. Past mochi flavors included blackberry, mandarin orange, cherry, kiwi, peach, ume, and the list goes on.
* YOGIZMO (SANTA CRUZ, CA): YoGizmo brought mix-in style fro-yo and tart soft-serve fro-yo to Scotts Valley in 2007 and added a Santa Cruz location in 2009. The owner was inspired by the tart mix-in fro-yo she enjoyed in Canada. You can get also get soy ice cream, ice cream, and acai sorbet as the base for the mix-in. Choose up to three fruits and enjoy a custom blended creation.

Thank you, fro-yo shop innovators. You have my love and deep appreciation.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

2009: The Fro-yo Year in Review

Fro-yo girl here. Back in January 2008, I developed my wish list for 2009. Most of my wishes had come true by June 2009. Here’s a look back at what I wished for and what actually happened.

* Soy fro-yo: Not much has changed. It’s still offered by Fraiche but hasn’t caught on. WholeSoy & Co. offers pints of organic soy fro-yo at health food supermarkets but I haven’t seen it yet: http://www.wholesoyco.com/product_frozen.html and it doesn’t come in any tart flavors
* Kefir fro-yo: Culture offered it a few times but not for long. Apparently it didn’t agree with their fro-yo machines. Starfruit Café in Chicago added a second location in 2009.
* New fro-yo flavors: There was much progress in this area from all over the world. In the Bay Area, Blush introduced the first organic cookies n’ cream flavor, along with guava and pina colada. Tuttimelon launched many new flavors including passionfruit, coconut, guava, and almond. Pinkberry added passionfruit, coconut, and chocolate. Red Mango added pumpkin spice and the unique Tangomonium. Sadly, some unique flavors like Chill Café’s Red Tea are no longer available.
* Mochi at Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt: I’m very frustrated that they still don’t have mochi. It’s almost unforgivable. I know that they aren’t like other fro-yo shops but mochi is my favorite fro-yo topping.
* More homemade mochi all over: This really happened at places like Sweet Orchid in Fremont, Coco Swirl, Hello Desserts, Yogurtastic, and Fraiche. And flavored mochi became fairly common.
* Tuttimelon’s growth continues: Tuttimelon continues to be the largest fro-yo player in the Bay Area, expanding into almost every SF neighborhood, the South Bay, Peninsula, East Bay, Asia, and Canada. Most of the new locations are self-serve.
* Fro-yo at Target and Trader Joe’s: Trader Joe’s offers frozen tart fro-yo. Target carries Ben & Jerry’s fro-yo.
* Tart fro-yo in your local supermarket freezer section: Trader Joe’s, Dreyer’s, Haagen Daaz and Cefiore answered the call for supermarket tart fro-yo.

I’m fairly happy with 2009 because most people in the Bay Area can now get fro-yo without driving too far and fro-yo shops keep on opening. There were also unexpected surprises like my new collection of Yogurtland spoons.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Happy Anniversary, Culture!

Fro-yo girl here. I don’t live or work close to Palo Alto, unfortunately, but I still make special trips to go to Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt. This week they’re celebrating their one year anniversary (be sure to wish them a Happy Anniversary – and get a free topping in return – but the offer ends on Friday, 9/25), so I had to stop by and also reflect on the special occasion.

I had a cup of original tart fro-yo in my smurf blue fro-yo cup and topped it with crunchy housemade graham crackers (delish!). The texture was great tonight, thick and creamy but also refreshing with an icy edge. The flavor still has some sourness though it’s not as sour as it was when it first opened (too bad – I miss the old original tart flavor). They didn’t have frozen kefir today either (boo). I love that I don't have to swirl it myself.

Current fro-yo flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Original, Raspberry peach banana

Culture milestones:
* First shop in Bay Area to offer frozen kefir
* First to offer homemade fro-yo toppings like crisps, marshmallow crème, housemade meringues, etc. And they’re organic!
* First Bay Area fro-yo shop to offer flaxseed cones
* First Bay Area fro-yo shop to offer fro-yo sandwiches (Yo’Wiches)
* Site of fro-yo event hosted by yours truly

Mary, please make mochi!!!!!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt Update: New Flavors, New Toppings

Fro-yo girl here. I’m so disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to try the mango + orange + pineapple kefir at Culture…but they said it would be back. Also, apparently the kefir has been causing problems for their machines. They had a new flavor of fro-yo, raspberry+peach+banana. I'd like it if it didn't have banana.

I also noticed that their fro-yo has been significantly sweeter during my last visits. I was afraid to ask about it but finally did. I’m told that Straus (Culture uses Straus yogurt) changed their sweetener (stopped using agave nectar I believe). So I was right – the fro-yo is sweeter now. It’s still really good but I liked it better before. Straus – why did you do this to me?!

I tried the new housemade Coffee Crunch topping. Eh. It’s super sweet and crumbly. I have to say that I didn’t like it at all but the new graham cracker topping sure looked yummy.

Expect to see their pumpkin fro-yo back on November 1st.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurt Parfaits at Fro-yo Places

Fro-yo girl here. While you can get yogurt parfaits just about everywhere (e.g., Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, McDonald’s), the best place to get them is at a good fro-yo shop where the fruit is fresh and the parfaits are made to order. These are my top picks for yogurt parfaits in the Bay Area:

* Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt: It’s no secret that I love Culture for the quality of their fro-yo and their incomparably delicious toppings. Their parfaits are made with organic Straus yogurt (yum). They have organic (yes organic) fruit that I don’t see at other fro-yo shops, including plums, pluots, peaches, Valencia oranges and blood oranges. And their crunchy, super fresh, house granola, made on the premises, is fantastic. My favorite is the gingersnap granola. Fruit and granola offerings change often.

* Fraiche Yogurt: I haven’t tried their non-frozen yogurt but they do make their own with Clover Organic Milk and it’s probably decent. I haven’t had their granola either because their homemade mochi is the best. Other options include steel cut oatmeal and Blue Bottle coffee.

* So Frais Frozen Yogurt Cafe: This new, upscale self-serve fro-yo shop also offers build your own yogurt parfaits at 42 cents an ounce. Their fresh fruit looked particularly fresh.

* Jubili Frozen Yogurt: I had a fro-yo parfait here but they also offer yogurt parfaits made with lowfat vanilla yogurt, your choice of two fresh fruit toppings, and your choice of granola. The crushed Nature Valley granola bars are really good!

Fraiche (7 AM on weekdays) and Jubili (8 AM on weekdays) are the only fro-yo shops that open early enough to have a yogurt parfait for breakfast. At Jubili you can get the fro-yo parfait at 8 AM if you’re so inclined (i.e., you’re like me). Yes, that is a picture of a fro-yo parfait. When I have a choice between a fro-yo parfait and a yogurt parfait, I choose the fro-yo parfait every time.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Items at Culture: Frozen Kefir (the first in the Bay Area), Yo’Wiches, Fro-yo Shakes

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been curious about frozen kefir for a long time and Culture just started offering it! It’s blueberry flavored and excellent (sweeter/less sour than their original tart). They’re the first shop in the Bay Area to offer frozen kefir.

Culture is also the first in the Bay Area to offer Yo’Wiches (fro-yo sandwiches), a heavenly combination of Mary’s housemade cookies and Alexis’s organic fro-yo ($4.49). They have two flavors right now: Chocolate cookies w/ chocolate fro-yo and Gingersnap cookies w/ vanilla fro-yo.

Fro-yo shakes are now on the menu too! You can even add malt to the mix. Malted fro-yo shakes. Mmm.

Love Mary’s crisps? You can now pre-order the crisps and enjoy them at home.

They still don’t have mochi though. I almost don’t miss it which is saying a lot because that’s usually my favorite topping.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Strawberry and Vanilla Fro-yo at Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. Organic Straus vanilla fro-yo has finally arrived at Culture!!!! I’ve been waiting for it since November and I can’t wait to try it because I know that it will be unlike any vanilla fro-yo I’ve had before.

Strawberry season is back and so too is Culture’s strawberry fro-yo, chock full of real strawberry flavor. Okay, I’m sad the tangerine fro-yo is gone but I’m happy to see strawberry fro-yo return. I also have a new favorite topping at Culture – the divinely crunchy Ginger Snap granola baked loving by Mary.

Here’s another picture of my Smurf blue fro-yo bowl filled with Culture fro-yo, fruit and Ginger Snap granola. You can also buy some of the toppings separately ($2.49 per bag). Where else can you get housemade pistachio brittle with fleur de sel and housemade mini chocolate meringues? Only at Culture. Go there if you appreciate real yogurt.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Eco-Friendly Fro-yo Shops

Fro-yo girl here. I should have posted this before Earth Day (April 22) but consider this a belated recognition of the Bay Area fro-yo shops out there who use compostable fro-yo cups and spoons. Culture goes the extra step, incorporating recycled materials in their shop design and giving you a discount for using your own fro-yo bowl (brilliant idea and I love my fro-yo bowl).

Here’s my list of eco-conscious fro-yo shops:
* Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt
* Yogurt Harmony
* Zuckersuss
* Pink Swirl
* Snowbunny
* Yogurt Shack

Eat fro-yo and show that you care about the Earth.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt Toppings Update

Fro-yo girl here. Though the vanilla frozen yogurt (that I am eagerly anticipating) is not yet available at Culture, the array of toppings continues to change. During a recent visit I saw that Mary had whipped up a batch of gingerbread crisp. They also had some kid friendly additions: organic rainbow sprinkles, organic HOMEMADE marshmallow crème, and cake cones.

I brought my reusable Smurf blue fro-yo bowl and filled it with tangerine and plain tart organic fro-yo, topped with blood oranges. Absolutely delicious! But I still hope that Mary will start making mochi…

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

No Fro-Yo on Thanksgiving

Fro-yo girl here. With fro-yo shops closed on Thanksgiving Day, what's a fro-yoholic to do?

1. Buy Cyclops Greek Style frozen yogurt at Whole Foods ($4.99 a pint, flavors include mango, banana, coffee, raspberry). There isn't a plain or honey flavor. I tried the mango flavor.

Cyclops organic fro-yo is made in New Zealand and contains egg yolk. The texture is firm and creamy, very similar to ice cream. It isn't tart but it is sweet and somewhat tangy. The tangy flavor is different from the tanginess of most tart fro-yos I've tried. It's hard to describe but reminds me of goat cheese. It had a few chunks of mango. I wasn't too crazy about the product and wouldn't get it again. I prefer Haagen Dazs's sweet fro-yo, particularly vanilla with honey and granola.

2. Buy fro-yo to go from your local fro-yo shop. Some fro-yo shops offer to go containers (usually family size). I bought a quart of pumpkin tart fro-yo from my favorite fro-yo shop, Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt in Palo Alto. They have insulated bags and the fro-yo survived my one hour drive home.

I was also worried about what freezing would do to the texture of the fro-yo. In this case, it does firm up and it brings out the iciness of the fro-yo. Still delicious! It keeps in the freezer for a week. I'm bringing some to Thanksgiving dinner.

Some fro-yo shops sell "yogurt pie." I've never had fro-yo pie but I'm definitely curious about it.

3. Freeze regular yogurt. I've tried this with many brands. The end result tends to be too hard and icy, but it's still nice to have a fro-yo fix on hand. I prefer YoPlus for the wider cup (easier to scoop out the fro-yo).

4. Make your own fro-yo. I'm too lazy to do this.

You know you love me. XOXO, fro-yo girl.

Tart Pumpkin Fro-Yo Arrives at Culture

Fro-yo girl here. Fall is definitely here and Culture just unveiled a new fro-yo flavor this week, tart pumpkin. I’ve had plenty of sweet pumpkin fro-yos but never tart pumpkin. I wasn’t sure how the tartness would work with the pumpkin flavor.

I trust Alexis’s palate (she’s the yogurt-in-chief) and sure enough, pumpkin is another winner. The pumpkin pie spices actually complement the sourness of the fro-yo. I think she’s on to something. Maybe ginger, cardamom and saffron and lemongrass would also work well as tart fro-yo flavors.

For fans of their strawberry tart fro-yo, hurry back to Culture. They plan on replacing strawberry with vanilla soon.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Culture Adds Yogurt Parfaits

Fro-yo girl here. My reusable blue smurf bowl was spotted again at Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt. Once again, they've added multiple new items. They had slices of their homemade apple cake, $2 each. And they now have build your own yogurt parfaits with Straus yogurt (not frozen yogurt) and of course access to their wonderful organic homemade toppings, fresh fruit, honey, dried fruit, etc.

I think the parfait is a great idea. I am not a parfait eater but I think they're mostly eaten for breakfast; if so, the fact that Culture doesn't open till 11 AM poses a bit of a problem for the parfait eaters in the area.

I also noticed that their fro-yo is different every time I go. Tonight the strawberry fro-yo didn't have as much strawberry flavor. The original fro-yo has gone from chunky and stiff, to creamy, to suddenly fluffier. The consistency issue bothers me a bit. I like my fro-yo creamy and denser.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Fro-Yo with Halloween Spirit

Love fro-yo? Love Halloween? Try one of these fro-yo treats on Halloween day:

  1. Pumpkin fro-yo. I had some yesterday at Natural Sensations in SF (SFSU campus). Try places that serve sweet fro-yo.
  2. Add crushed Oreo cookies or graham cracker crumbs and gummy worms to your fro-yo. Instant faux gross fro-yo treat! I believe you can assemble such a treat at Yogurt Station in Walnut Creek, Nubi in Millbrae, Frozo's in Milpitas & Santa Clara, etc.
  3. Bring candy corn to your favorite fro-yo shop. Add to your fro-yo.
  4. Get the pumpkin spice granola as a fro-yo topping at Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt in Palo Alto.
  5. Add Halloween candy (e.g., Halloween Kit Kats) to your store-bought fro-yo (e.g., Haagen Dazs).

Happy Halloween!

Spotlight on Tart Fro-Yo Toppings

Fro-yo girl here. The vast majority of tart fro-yo shops have very similar fruit and dry toppings and they normally carry anywhere from a dozen to 50 different types of toppings. Most of the toppings, other than the fresh fruit, come in boxes and cans. A few shops don't even have fresh fruit and may offer up defrosted frozen or canned fruit instead.

Strawberries are the most popular fresh fruit topping but other common fruit toppings include:
  • Kiwi

  • Pineapple

  • Mango

  • Blueberries

  • Raspberries

  • Blackberries

  • Bananas

  • Watermelon

  • Cantaloupe

  • Honeydew

  • Pomegranate seeds
Less common fruit toppings include:
  • Peaches (canned are more common than fresh)

  • Cherries (canned are more common than fresh)

  • Plums

  • Grapes

  • Pluots

  • Mandarin oranges

  • Lychee

  • Longan

  • Jackfruit
Mochi balls are my favorite non-fruit topping and they're available at most fro-yo shops. Other common dry toppings include:
  • Cereals (Fruity Pebbles, Cap'n Crunch, Cocoa Pebbles usually, but also Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, Golden Grahams, Honey Nut Cheerios, etc.)

  • Granola

  • Chocolate chips

  • Yogurt chips

  • Carob chips

  • Graham crackers (crushed)

  • Almonds

  • Marshmallows

  • Coconut

  • Dried cranberries (and other dried fruits)

  • Crushed cookies (chocolate chip, Oreo, Teddy Grahams, etc.)
Occasionally you'll see the following:
  • Brownie bits

  • Cheesecake bits
If the fro-yo shop also sells traditional sweet fro-yo, chances are they'll have crushed candy toppings (Butterfinger, gummy bears, mini M&Ms, Jelly Bellies, Nerds, Twix, Kit Kat) and sprinkles. I personally don't like to have candy toppings on my tart fro-yo.

You may also find various syrups (chocolate being the most common), honey and condensed milk.

Some Asian fro-yo shops have Asian toppings such as:
  • Chestnuts

  • Jelly (different types, like rainbow jelly, coconut jelly)

  • Red beans

You can customize your treat further with flavored powders like green tea, chocolate, green apple, etc. I've seen the powders at YoSwirl in Fremont, TrendyBean in Santa Clara and Tuttimelon.

Once in a blue moon, you'll come across a place that makes their own toppings. In the Bay Area, there are two places that do this (both in Palo Alto) and deserve special recognition:

* FRAICHE YOGURT: Homemade granola, homemade mochi balls. Unfortunately, their fro-yo is flavorless.
* CULTURE ORGANIC FROZEN YOGURT: The best place for homemade organic toppings, the variety changes all the time and includes mini chocolate meringues, a seasonal granola, mini chocolate chip cookies, brownies, coconut crunch, homemade apple cake, etc. These are all made on the premises by the brilliant Toppings In Chief, Mary. Right now they have spiced apples! Absolutely amazing - no other place comes close.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Flaxseed Cones at Culture

Fro-yo girl here. Some fro-yo shops offer the option of having your fro-yo in a cone. Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt has taken this idea to the next level – homemade cones. Rather than offer your usual cake, waffle, or sugar cone, they’ve created an innovative and healthier alternative: flaxseed cones.

Flaxseeds are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, lignan, soluble fiber and protein and consumption of flaxseeds promotes cardiovascular, immune, colon and brain health. I happen to like the nutty flavor of flaxseeds, so I buy bread with flaxseed or sprinkle flaxseeds on my cereal.

As for Culture’s flaxseed cones, they’re thin, sweet and a bit crunchy. The flavor isn’t strong enough to interfere with the fro-yo flavor and they hold up well when filled with fro-yo. You can buy a cone for $2.99. A cone + fro-yo + one topping is $5.49. You can also get the cone with fresh, seasonal, organic fruit (or their other toppings) without any fro-yo – perfect for vegans.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pomegranate Seeds are Back!

Fro-yo girl here. When it comes to fresh fruit toppings, pomegranate seeds are my favorite. I love the crunch of the seed portion and the refreshing tartness of the flesh. Peeling one takes forever, so the seeds also feel like a special treat.

Pomegranates also are considered a superfood, rich in anti-oxidiants and a good source of of vitamin B5, potassium, vitamin C. Consumption may reduce the risk of heart disease, lower systolic blood pressure and promote prostate health in men.

Pomegranates are typically in season from October through January and I’ve been anxiously awaiting their return. The season is so short so I’ll have to get pomegranate seeds whenever I see them.

Today at Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt in Palo Alto, I saw a large bowl stacked with pomegranates. They’re back!!!! Pomegranate seeds were recently spotted at Fro-ggie in Fremont as well (thanks Carol L.) and Yogurt Harmony in Berkeley (thanks Karen W.). Keep an eye out for them at other fro-yo shops. I’ve had pomegranate seeds with my fro-yo at Red Mango, Pinkberry, Jubili, Tuttimelon, and Blondie’s Pizza. I’ve had pomegranate tart fro-yo at Tuttimelon (Irving St., SF and Alameda), Blush (pomegranate-dragonfruit), Papamingo, and Nubi (raspberry pomegranate). Tuttimelon has the best tasting pom tart fro-yo and it’s extra tart. Yum!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
