Red Mango Develops the First Probiotic Iced Tea

Fro-yo girl here. Red Mango Facebook fans had the opportunity to guess the new, healthy, non fro-yo product this week. The first 10 people who correctly guessed the product won $10 gift cards. I guessed popsicles but really prayed it would be Korean tacos (not that I thought tacos were practical for them).

The mystery product is described below in the official press release. Mysteaque sounds perfect for me.

I wonder why their Green Tea fro-yo won’t have GanedenBC30?

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

From Red Mango: DALLAS (July 22, 2009) – Red Mango, the fastest-growing retailer of authentic nonfat frozen yogurt, today announced it will become the first retailer to offer made-to-order iced teas fortified with probiotics. Three proprietary flavors, all incorporating GanedenBC30®, a patented strain of probiotic shown to help support the immune system and regulate the digestive system, are available in participating Red Mango stores beginning July 27. Additionally, Red Mango’s Original, Pomegranate by POM Wonderful® and Tangomonium™ authentic frozen yogurt sold throughout New York will now include GanedenBC30 through an exclusive agreement. By September, all other Red Mango stores will have frozen yogurt with GanedenBC30.

Lemonocity™ (Lemonade Green Tea), Mysteaque™ (Vanilla Black Tea) and Fanteasia™ (Wildberry Hibiscus Tea) iced teas are each uniquely delicious, low-calorie, sweetened with natural cane sugar and contain a significant amount of probiotics, or good bacteria.

Since its inception, Red Mango has focused on educating its customers about the advantages of authentic frozen yogurt and the probiotics Red Mango contains.
“Red Mango provides easy and delicious ways to be healthy,” said Dan Kim, Red Mango’s founder, president and chief executive officer. “Our new iced teas have both the benefits of antioxidants and probiotics, and our frozen yogurt became even healthier with the addition of GanedenBC30.”

GanedenBC30 provides additional health benefits because of its excellent stability, which helps it survive better through the digestive system. Scientists now recognize that 70 percent of our immune system is actually living in the digestive tract, which emphasizes the importance of digestive health.

Interesting, wonder if they would do a free promotion on this.

I really like the idea of probiotic derived food, to generate increase sales as I see it is an untap market. But I wonder is this a good move from Red Mango. Their business model seem to be focus on simplicity. You get 3 size, 4 flavor and a few topping. You can blend it or not blend it into a drink. It reduces the thinking process and speeds up the line. Customers do see a perceive benefit to keeping it simple.
I think Red Mango shouldn't leave their niche market, and diversify. By doing so they might end up being like Quickly, where they have 100's of items, from fro yo to bubble milk tea, to fish balls. But the increase items doesn't increase sales. By diversifying Red Mango becomes less of a destination.

Hi Coco/B,

I haven't heard of any plans for a free promotion...will keep my ears open.

Hi William,

Interesting comments. I think it's very cool that they developed something brand new - probiotic iced tea. I'm curious whether the iced tea will be made on site daily...if it's already made, then it could easily be sold at supermarkets like the Pom teas. Maybe that's not so bad. Tea seems pretty simple and the menu's still pretty limited. Whether it increases sales remains to be seen. It might attract some new clientele and the timing is good (summer time = iced tea time).

Had trouble getting back on your site for a couple of days -- so am just getting you this update that the Green Tea fro-yo with Ganeden BC30 may take a longer than September. As soon as it can be added to the store's inventory, it will! From Dawn - Bay Area PR Rep for Red Mango
