Nestle Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. I never felt the urge to try Outshine bars/pops before because they didn’t have any yogurt bars. That just changed this month with the launch of Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars, made with 100% yogurt and fruit. I spotted the bars at Target, where a box of four bars (10.2 fl oz) is $4.59.

One bar is 90 calories with 2g of fat and 5g of protein. Outshine Yogurt Bars have live and active cultures, with no artificial colors or flavors and no high fructose corn syrup.

* Blueberry: A thick bar with a soft, creamy, whipped texture that holds its shape well. The bar delivered on its promise of creaminess and it also didn’t have unpleasant artificial flavors. It was light and satisfying. The flavor was slightly tangy and mildly blueberry like but on the bland side (too much cream?) I’ve had better (and worse) froyo bars. This one was better than average in texture but lacking in flavor.

Spotted flavors: Strawberry Banana, Strawberry, Mango, Peach, Blueberry

There are two other flavors but I'm not sure what they are.

Ingredients (Blueberry): Yogurt (skim milk, sugar, lactose reduced skim milk, cream, blueberry puree, milk protein concentrate, pectin, natural flavors, guar gum, carob bean gum, live and active cultures).

Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars are available only at Target.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Simple Truth Greek Frozen Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Simple Truth is a line of products from Kroger launched in September 2012 with simple ingredient labels. I spotted Simple Truth Greek frozen yogurt bars at Ralph’s. A box contains four 3.5 fl oz bars/popsicles. Each bar is 120-130 calories with 3.5-4g of fat. A box retails for $4.49. During my visit the bars were on sale for $2.99.

Flavors: Vanilla, Strawberry Vanilla, Blueberry Vanilla

* Blueberry vanilla bar: It’s a pretty bar, vanilla with light purple blueberry swirls throughout. There’s a thin icy shell. The bar is soft, airy, smooth and quite creamy. The blueberry flavor is noticeable but not strong/potent. It’s very sweet and tastes mostly like cream with a hint of vanilla and blueberry. The aftertaste is slightly bitter. It looks and tastes similar to the new 365 Everyday Value Organic Greek Yogurt Low Fat Dessert Bars at Whole Foods.

Ingredients: Skim milk, milk, sugar, cream, Greek frozen yogurt base (whey protein concentrate, cultured dairy solids, milk protein concentrate, natural flavors), blueberry base (blueberries, sugar, water, blueberry juice concentrate, sugar syrup, natural flavor, carob bean gum, citric acid), corn syrup, contains 2% or less of: egg yolks, carob bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, polysorbate 80, vanilla extract, beet juice (color)

The bars are not organic but they are “free from 101 artificial preservatives and ingredients.”

You can find coupons at simpletruth.com

3.5 out of 5 stars.

365 Everyday Value Organic Greek Yogurt Low Fat Dessert Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Whole Foods recently introduced a line of organic yogurt and ice cream bars under the 365 Everyday Value brand. The frozen yogurt bars come in boxes with four 2.5 fl oz bars for $3.99. There are two flavors: Blueberry and Strawberry. The bars are 90 calories each, lowfat, sweetened with organic cane sugar and contain live and active cultures.

* Blueberry bar: The texture is soft, light and creamy. There’s blueberry flavor throughout with some visible blueberry swirls. The flavor is sweet and natural with yogurt flavor but little tanginess. It’s pleasant but doesn’t have the wow factor of the best frozen yogurt bars from Yolato.

The strawberry flavor looks similar with strawberry swirls.

Ingredients: Pasteurized organic nonfat milk, organic cultured Greek yogurt, organic cane sugar, organic blueberries, pasteurized organic cream, organic tapioca syrup, organic milk protein concentrate, organic tapioca starch, natural blueberry flavor, organic locust bean gum, organic guar gum, organic rice starch, citric acid

4 out of 5 stars.

Yasso Peanut Butter Cup Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Back in May 2012, I tried Yasso’s Raspberry Greek Frozen Yogurt Bars: http://froyogirl.blogspot.com/2012/05/yasso-frozen-greek-yogurt-bars-review.html and I found them to be lacking in flavor. Yasso released five new flavors in February 2014: Peanut Butter Cup, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Fudge, Dark Chocolate Raspberry and Sea Salt Caramel. The bars are made with Greek yogurt and all natural ingredients.

* Peanut butter cup: These are tastier than the Raspberry Yasso bars I tried in 2012. The best part was the thin chocolate shell that covered the top half of the bar. It’s a crisp shell that tastes like good chocolate, not the yucky waxy chocolate shells one sometimes encounters. The peanut butter part was firm and light. It wasn’t icy but I wish it were creamier. The peanut butter flavor is mild and there isn’t much yogurt flavor. It’s sweet but not too sweet. I liked how it tasted lighter. The chocolate shell fell off...I wish the shell covered the entire bar. One bar was 130 calories with 6 gms of fat.

Each box comes with 4 60 g bars. I found Yasso on sale at Von’s for $3.99 ($4.99 regular price).

4 out of 5 stars.

Healthy Choice Frozen Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve tried Healthy Choice Greek Frozen Yogurt cups before but this was my first time trying their frozen yogurt bars. They come in two flavors: Strawberry and Pomegranate Blueberry. One box contains six 2.5 fl oz. bars. I found the Pomegranate Blueberry flavor at Grocery Outlet for $1.99.

One bar is 90 calories with 1g of fat. The box says the bars have natural flavors and are made with yogurt cultures. It is unclear whether the cultures are live or not (it doesn’t say that they’re live and active).

* Pomegranate blueberry bar: The best thing about the bar is the light, soft, creamy texture. The exterior has a very thin icy shell. The flavor was very sweet with little fruit flavor and no yogurt tang. The flavor tastes quite artificial (I thought that this was due to artificial sweetener but it’s not) probably due to the various gums they use and/or all the processing involved. The Healthy Choice Greek Frozen Yogurt cups taste better than their frozen yogurt bars.

Ingredients: nonfat milk, sugar, pomegranate blueberry flavor [sugar, water, blueberry puree, pomegranate juice concentrate, natural flavor, phosphoric acid, black carrot and black currant juice [for color], cellulose gum, ascorbic acid, green tea powder, corn syrup, cream, maltodextrin, contains 2% or less of: milk protein concentrate, lactic acid, mono- and diglycerides, guar gum, locust bean gum, cellulose gum, cornstarch, carrageenan, calcium carbonate, vitamin a palmitate, yogurt cultures.

2 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Akemi Ice Popsicles Review

Fro-yo girl here. I found another yogurt flavored popsicle. Akemi ice popsicles are from Taiwan. They’re very pretty with four flavors in one popsicle. Each color is a different flavor. There are eight flavor stripes per popsicle. The green is muskmelon, the red is cranberry, the orange is mango and the white is yogurt. The popsicles are flavored with real fruit juice.

The popsicle is soft and light with a texture similar to Yasso and Yolato bars (or think of fruit sherbet). It’s refreshing and melts in your mouth.

The fruity flavors are distinct but not intense. Mango is the sweetest. Muskmelon sounds exotic but its cantaloupe. The cranberry stripe was my favorite as it had a bit of tanginess. The yogurt stripe was the worst because it tasted like a sweetened yogurt drink (e.g., Yakult) and reminded me of the taste of children’s chewable aspirin.

Ingredients: water, sugar, fructose, milk powder, lactic acid, malic acid, cantaloupe juice, mango juice, cranberry juice, emulsifier, food color, etc.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yolato Frozen Yogurt Gelato Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. I was recently lucky enough to be the recipient of Yolato frozen yogurt gelato bars. The bars are all natural, rbst free, cholesterol free, kosher and only 80 calories each. Each box contains four 61g bars. The frozen yogurt gelato bars are available in three flavors: Pomegranate, Naturalato, Blueberrato. I ate three and that’s still fewer calories than a typical cup of frozen yogurt.

* Naturalato: The bar has a soft, light texture (but maintains its shape). It’s creamy yet has that refreshing edge of a good frozen yogurt. It’s sweet but mildly tangy with a pleasant, sweet, clean aftertaste. It’s very light thanks to the gelato and melts in your mouth quickly.

* Blueberrato: It’s a pretty bar with white and purple swirls. Blueberrato combines frozen yogurt gelato and blueberry acai sorbet. The texture is soft and light like the Naturalato. It’s sweeter than the Naturalato but still has that mild tanginess. The blueberry flavor is discernable but not so strong that you can’t appreciate the yogurt flavor and the naturalato flavor.

* Pomegranate: The award-winning Pomegranato is my favorite of the three because it was the tangiest and also seemed the creamiest. It had that same light, soft, melt in your mouth texture with white and reddish pink swirls (pomegranate sorbet). The sweetness and yogurt tang linger on your palate.

Having tried a variety of frozen yogurt bars, I’ve found that some are really icy and hard, some don’t taste like yogurt, and others might be healthy are lacking in flavor. Yolato provides a wonderful tasting bar that has the tanginess and flavor of frozen yogurt with a soft, light, silky texture. It's genius to combine frozen yogurt, gelato and sorbet in one bar.

Ingredients (Naturalato): Skim milk and milk, sugar, corn syrup, cultured skim milk, maltodextrin, stabilizer/emulsifier, citric acid, natural flavors, vitamin A palmitate, yogurt cultures

5 out of 5 stars

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Epoca Cool Probiotic Ice Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. During a recent trip to the Korean market, I spotted Epoca Cool Probiotic Ice Bars. Each box has 6 ice bars. Cool ice bars are available in three flavors: Peach, Original and Strawberry.

Epoca was founded by a Korean, Jun Lee, and manufactures flavored milk, probiotic beverages, cultured dairy drinks and smoothies in California.

Cool ice bars were inspired by Korean kids who “liked to freeze a probiotic beverage in their home freezers and lick out the product.” The bars are made with the same formula as Epoca’s probiotic beverages and include live and active cultures. One bar is 90 calories and the main ingredients are: filtered water, high fructose corn syrup, cream, and nonfat dry milk.

I tried the Original flavor. The popsicle was firm and icy but not very hard/solid. The flavor is similar to Yakult but not as sweet as Yakult. I did like that it was refreshing and tangy but it was more sweet than tangy and somewhat bland. I found a box of Cool for $3.99 at Kukje.

Safeway Open Nature Greek Frozen Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Safeway has expanded its private label Open Nature Greek frozen yogurt line with frozen yogurt bars. Four flavors are available: Blueberry, strawberry, cherry, and vanilla.

I bought a package of vanilla bars. The bar was soft and very creamy, like ice cream on a stick but with a bit of yogurt flavor. The flavor was too sweet and it wasn't tangy or sour like you'd expect for a yogurt product. However, I did like the texture and the fact that it had some yogurt flavor.

The bars come in a package of six. One bar is 120 calories, 3.5g of fat and 5g of protein. The main ingredients are skim milk, sugar, water, cream and whey protein. The product contains live and active yogurt cultures. A package is $2.79 with a Club card, $3.99 without a card.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Woman’s World You Deserve the Best Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. I was recently approached by Woman’s World for supermarket fro-yo recommendations for their You Deserve the Best Frozen Yogurt feature. One of my picks appear in the June 25th issue, on sale on newsstands from June 14 - 20. A woman in a pink bikini is on the cover. You can find my pick in the article entitled “You deserve the best frozen yogurt.”

Here are the rest of my favorite supermarket frozen yogurt products:

  • BEST ORGANIC FROZEN YOGURT:  Julie’s Organic Vanilla, it’s sweet and gelato-like with a clean, pure flavor
  • BEST TART FROZEN YOGURT: Double Rainbow Strawberry Tart has that creamy, firm, smooth texture that I look for and it tastes more natural than competitors. It’s a cross between a good strawberry sorbet and strawberry ice cream with a nice tartness.
  • BEST SWEET FROZEN YOGURT: Haagen Dazs Vanilla Honey & Granola is very sweet but also really good. It still has a hint of real yogurt flavor. I love the flavor of the honey and the slightly crunchy granola bits.
  • BEST GREEK FROZEN YOGURT: Ben & Jerry’s has a good smooth texture and real yogurt flavor, plus the add-ins (fudge chunks, graham crackers) are very flavorful
I tried Blue Bunny’s frozen yogurt bars after I provided my picks to Woman’s World. Blue Bunny’s frozen yogurt bars are better than Jamba Juice’s (the product I picked in WW).

Blue Bunny Naturally Frozen Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’d heard of Blue Bunny the ice cream brand before but I didn’t think their products were available in California. Recently, while looking for TCBY frozen yogurt products at Walmart, I noticed that Walmart also carried Blue Bunny. And they had Blue Bunny frozen yogurt products!

I bought a box of blueberry & vanilla bean frozen yogurt bars. One box comes with 6 popsicles. The popsicles are all natural. One bar is 110 calories with 4 grams of fat. The main ingredients are milk, sugar, cream, blueberries, cane syrup, egg yolks, etc.

* NATURALLY BLUEBERRY & VANILLA BEAN FROZEN YOGURT BARS: The popsicle features a beautiful swirl pattern, since the blueberry and vanilla flavors are kept separate. It’s thick and about the same size as the Yasso Greek frozen yogurt bar. The bar has visible vanilla bean specks and bits of blueberry skin. The popsicle is really good! Creamy, smooth, sweet but not too sweet, not bitter. You can taste the vanilla and the blueberry. It’s not bland and it has yogurt flavor.

Blue Bunny Frozen Yogurt Bars also come in one other flavor: Chocolate & Vanilla Bean (Swirl).

Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. I still haven’t spotted Yasso’s frozen Greek yogurt bars in the Bay Area, but I have spotted them at supermarkets in Seattle and Los Angeles (e.g., Vons, Ralph’s, Gelson’s).

Yasso bars come in three flavors: strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. At QFC, a box of 4 bars was $3.99 on sale, $4.99 regular price. The bars are all natural and made without corn syrup. One fat free bar is 70 calories.

* RASPBERRY YASSO BARS: Each bar is individually wrapped. The thick bar looks smooth and the texture is indeed creamy and smooth. It’s also light (not dense). The texture is very good but the flavor is quite bland. There isn’t enough raspberry or yogurt flavor. The aftertaste is bitter. I can’t say that I liked the taste but the bars do seem pretty healthy.

Fro-yo Wish List for 2012

Fro-yo girl here. Happy Fro-yo New Year! It's a new year and time for my new fro-yo wish list. These are the things I’d like to see happen this year.

* Yogurtland in San Francisco. It’s crazy that SF doesn’t have a Yogurtland. The new one in Burlingame will be close but I’d really like to have one in SF.
* Pinkberry in San Francisco. Their SFO airport location is too inconvenient since it requires one to go through security. How can SF still be so deprived? This year I’m going to buy a cup of Pinkberry fro-yo and stroll onto a plane with it.
* Fro-yo popsicles. I’m still waiting for decent fro-yo popsicles that I can buy from a supermarket and aren’t from Korea.
* Mochi fro-yo. Since Mikawaya and others have figured out how to get ice cream into mochi, they could easily do the same with fro-yo. Everyone knows that fro-yo and mochi go well together.

If anyone wants to create a fro-yo flavor in my honor, make sure it has red bean.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Lotte Samkang Cider and Yogurt Flavored Ice Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. I found another Korean fro-yo popsicle, Lotte Samkang Cider & Yogurt Flavored Ice Bar. The flavor sounded strange (cider & yogurt). A bag of six individually wrapped popsicles was $4.99. The popsicles are imported from Korea. Each bar is 80 calories and doesn’t have live and active cultures.

The popsicle looks like a pale white square bar and it’s very icy and hard. It tastes like those very sugary yogurt drinks only not as good because it isn’t tangy. It’s way sweet and tastes a bit like bubblegum. Very artificial. There are yellow and pink bits and they’re just like hard pieces of ice with no flavor. It’s refreshing but tastes awful.

Ingredients: water, skimmed milk powder, whey powder, refined salt, coconut oil, artificial flavor, stabilizer, emulsifier, food coloring

Yogurt Popsicles Spotted in Vancouver

Fro-yo girl here. I stumbled on several interesting yogurt items in Canada (items I hadn’t seen in the U.S.), including Hoo yogurt soda ice cream bars. I didn’t try them but will look out for them in the U.S. The blue color seemed scary. The writing on the box looks Chinese.

Yomamte Strawberry Frozen Yogurt Popsicle Review

Fro-yo girl here. My recent trip to Kukje for kim chee led to an exciting new find in the freezer section, Yomamte strawberry fro-yo popsicles. The Korean made popsicles come in an insulated pink bag. The bag ($5.49) contains 6 individually wrapped popsicles. I only saw one flavor (strawberry). One popsicle is 100 calories and 14 fl. oz. Ingredients: water, strawberry syrup, sugar, food starch, skim milk powder, yogurt powder, etc.

The popsicle has an elegant slender shape and a pale pink color with tiny strawberry pieces. It's very firm and icy yet had a pleasant milky flavor and is creamier than a fruit popsicle without dairy. I found it refreshing but a bit bland (not much strawberry flavor). It's not tangy but is sweet and has a real yogurt flavor (it's mild though).

The package shows a blonde girl in yoga looking clothing, to emphasize fitness and low calories, I presume. I didn't see anything about live and active cultures.

Julie's Organic Strawberry Lowfat Frozen Yogurt Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. I scan the frozen food section for fro-yo on every grocery shopping trip. Canyon Market recently started carrying Julie's Organic Strawberry Lowfat Frozen Yogurt Bars ($3.99 for a box of 4 popsicles). One popsicle is 100 calories, 2.5 fl. oz., "provides a good source of prebiotic fiber and also boasts six active probiotic yogurt cultures which can enhance digestion and improve the immune system."

The strawberry popsicle is soft, smooth and creamy, with visible strawberry seeds. It's like ice cream on a stick. It was extremely sweet with a somewhat bitter aftertaste and not much strawberry or yogurt flavor.

Julie's Organic Lowfat Frozen Yogurt Bars are available in 1 flavor, strawberry.

Yogo Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. Tart fro-yo popsicles are hard to come by. I found a Korean brand, Choripdong, of Plain frozen yogurt popiscles called Yogo Bar while shopping at Marina Foods. Each bar contains more than 30,000,000 CFU of lactobacillus. It's made without any artificial colors or flavors though the main ingredient is corn syrup, followed by sugar and water. Each 75 ml popsicle is 135 calories with 5g of fat. A box of 9 bars retailed for $4.59 - not a bad price for 9 popsicles.

* Plain Yogo Bar: quite good, soft (but not too soft) and icy but creamy thanks to the cream and milk. It is quite sweet, but also tangy and has a milky flavor. It has a clean taste. I found it a bit too sweet but still enjoyable.

I wish it came in other flavors. Maybe they exist and I just need to find them.

Trix is Promoting Fro-yo

Fro-yo girl here. I was at the grocery store recently, checking out the yogurt section and I noticed that the Yoplait Trix packages include a free gift, a set of colorful Trix sticks. The package features a picture of the Trix Rabbit holding a fro-yo popsicle. You stick the plastic stick in the Trix yogurt cup, freeze and voila = fro-yo popsicle.

Flavors include:
* Very Berry Watermelon/ Berry Bolt
* Cotton Candy/ Strawberry Kiwi
* Raspberry Rainbow/ Strawberry Banana Bash
* Triple Cherry/ Wild Berry Blue
* Watermelon Burst/ Strawberry Punch

I didn't buy any...the idea of yogurt named after a sugary kids' cereal just doesn't appeal to me. Still, I was happy to see the popularity of fro-yo.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Frozen Yogurt Bars

Fro-yo girl here. I was pleasantly surprised to see new fro-yo options in the supermarket freezer section. Safeway's Eating Right came out with a line of fro-yo. I spotted three flavors: Vanilla, Black Cherry Chocolate Chip and Sugar-Free Vanilla ($3.99 for 1.5 qts). Haagen Dazs added a peach flavor fro-yo and their vanilla fro-yo comes in the tiny single serve cup ($1).

I was particularly excited to see the new Jamba Juice yogurt and sorbet bars. They come in three flavors: Coconut Pineapple Passion Smashin', Vanilla Strawberry Jubilation, and Vanilla Blueberry Pomegranate Perfection. I bought a pack of the Vanilla Strawberry Jubilation bars ($4.29 regular price, $3.49 on sale at Safeway). The all natural, low fat bars contain pro-biotic yogurt cultures. They're really good! The bar is a pretty pink & white swirl and the texture is creamy, smooth and firm. It does taste like strawberries. The bar is a bit tangy but also quite sweet. I'm surprised it's only 80 calories. I would get these again. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Weight Watchers new strawberry smoothie bar ($5.99 regular price, $3.89 on sale at Safeway) contains yogurt. The popsicle is small (maybe 1/2 the size of your typical popsicle). It's creamy with real chunks of strawberry. It tastes like a very sweet, creamy strawberry ice cream. It has corn syrup. At first I liked it but then I noticed a slightly bitter aftertaste. One bar is 60 calories. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
