Yoga-urt Echo Park Turns One & Introduces a New Flavor Available This Weekend Only

Fro-yo girl here. It’s been a Yoga-urt tradition to celebrate store anniversaries with a new flavor introduction and the tradition continues. Yoga-urt Echo Park turns one on June 1 and is celebrating with a limited time NEW flavor, Rocky Road, available in Echo Park this weekend only. Rocky Road purchases will come with free vegan marshmallows and toasted almond topping. The flavor does contain soy (unlike their other flavors) since it’s made with Dandies Marshmallows. Dandies Marshmallows are vegan, kosher, gluten-free, free of corn syrup, and made with no artificial flavors or colors.

I wondered why they made a flavor that contains soy and it’s because of all the requests they’ve received for a Rocky Road flavor. There are no domestic commercially available vegan marshmallows available that are soy-free.

Rocky Road vegan froyo: The newest addition to Yoga-urt’s flavor line-up is vegan, kosher, all natural, probiotic, hand-crafted and more. The chocolate flavor was very rich and had a hint of sweetness from the marshmallow. The vegan mini marshmallows tasted just like the regular ones and had the same soft, spongy texture. Recommended toppings: Chocolate cookies, nuts. Chocolate sauce might make it too chocolatey?

Yoga-urt Echo Park is open from 1 PM – 10 PM this weekend.
Birthday Cake flavor is also available for this special birthday weekend. Call ahead for pickup or order online from the Yoga-urt website or for delivery, use Postmates or Grubhub. You can also walk over, look at the menu posted in the window, and call in your order, but customers aren’t allowed inside the shop. Everything is packed for takeout and samples are not allowed.

Don’t forget that you can still help those in need enjoy Yoga-urt by making a donation to Yoga-urt, a Support + Feed partner. Support + Feed has partnered with plant-based restaurants in LA, NYC, and Philadelphia to help struggling plant-based restaurants and coordinate food deliveries to hospitals, first responders, senior centers, homeless centers, women’s shelters and others in need. Support a woman-owned, eco-conscious small business that helps others in need.

Happy 1 year anniversary, Yoga-urt Echo Park! You know I love you!

Yasso Chocolate Dipped Bars Review

Vanilla chocolate crunch

Sea salt caramel chocolate crunch

Fro-yo girl here. Yasso recently introduced a new line of chocolate dipped Greek frozen yogurt bars. The Greek yogurt bars have a milk chocolate or dark chocolate coating with crisped quinoa. Bars are 140-160 calories each with 4g of protein, live and active cultures, and no high intensity sweeteners. They sounded right up my alley, since I like crunchy chocolate dipped bars and clearly love froyo.

I found two flavors at Vons and it didn’t seem like they carried the other two flavors, based on the shelf tags. They were $6.79 each, $1.30 more than the suggested retail price. One box has four individually wrapped bars. Each bar is 2.65 oz. The bars are gluten-free. One bar of salted caramel chocolate crunch has 150 calories, 7g total fat, 18g total carbs, 15g total sugars and 4g protein. The ingredients list is relatively short and natural sounding.

The bars are smaller than the regular Yasso bars. A regular Yasso bar is 3.5 oz. The chocolate dipped bars are about 3.5 inches in length, 2 inches in height, and 1 inch wide.

Vanilla Chocolate Crunch: You can’t easily tell this from the packaging, but some of the bars have a milk chocolate coating and others have a dark chocolate coating. Vanilla Chocolate Crunch bars feature a milk chocolate shell that’s thin and crisp, with added crunch from the crisped quinoa. I was impressed with the flavor and texture of the chocolate shell. The vanilla froyo on the inside is soft and creamy with a distinctive vanilla flavor and a subtle yogurt flavor. It’s hard to tell that it’s frozen yogurt but it’s still a delicious, fairly healthy treat.

Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Crunch: I don’t usually like salted caramel but Yasso’s version wasn’t cloyingly sweet. The dark chocolate shell was thicker than the milk chocolate shell and also very tasty.

I slightly preferred the Vanilla Chocolate Crunch since I like vanilla froyo better than salted caramel froyo, but I liked the dark chocolate shell better than the milk chocolate shell. I remember how much I liked their pb dipped chocolate bar years ago but I haven’t seen it for years. I’m excited to find the new Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch bars.

The indulgent yet healthy dipped bars are available in four flavors:

  • Mint Chocolate Crunch
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch
  • Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Crunch
  • Vanilla Chocolate Crunch

A box comes with four bars and retails for $5.49.

Use the store locator to find Yasso Chocolate Dipped Bars.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New at Yogurtland: Orange Blossom White Peach Light Ice Cream

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland planned to launch Orange Blossom White Peach light ice cream in April, but then the coronavirus outbreak occurred. While some Yogurtland locations in my area were still open, none of them had Orange Blossom White Peach light ice cream in April. Now it’s late May and a few locations have started offering Orange Blossom White Peach light ice cream. Samples are still not allowed in Los Angeles. I found the new flavor at Yogurtland Pico Rivera (8756 Washington Blvd, Pico Rivera, CA 90660). An associate dispensed the froyo and added toppings.

Orange Blossom White Peach light ice cream is described by Yogurtland as: “we took the sweetness of a juicy white peach and paired it with bright, citrusy accents of orange blossom for a light ice cream that’s delicate, fruity, and ready for spring.”

Orange Blossom White Peach: It’s definitely more like peach than orange blossom. The orange blossom was difficult to detect. The flavor was sweet and peachy without any tang. The texture was smooth and creamy. It didn’t appeal to me because of the lack of tang and the lack of orange blossom. But I paired it with plain tart for tang, so that helped. Recommended toppings: Granola, strawberries, popping boba.

Late spring/summer has been bringing new floral flavors at Yogurtland these past few years, with past flavors including 2019’s Blueberry Lavender light ice cream and 2018’s Strawberry Rose froyo. I find floral flavors interesting and creative, so I’m a fan of the trend in theory. Orange Blossom White Peach is the first Yogurtland flavor with orange blossom. I miss tangy, fruity froyo.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

21 Choices Pasadena Reopens, More Types of Vegan Bases on the Way?

Fro-yo girl here. Is it just me or does it seem like 21 Choices Frozen Yogurt has been closed a lot these past few years. The renovation of their old space on Colorado Blvd. took forever and then they moved into a brand new spot around the corner. Space NK, the beauty retailer, took over their old spot. Then they closed right before the safer at home order was issued. I think they closed on 3/16 and no updates were provided after 3/18, until they reopened on May 22.

They quietly reopened just in time for Memorial Day weekend. I visited to see if anything had changed. They’re making their non-dairy soft serve with housemade oat milk now. The employee had a face shield on and the yogurt and toppings are behind a shield as well. Mix ins are still available. Everyone who enters is required to wear a mask.

I tried their non-dairy oat milk soft serve for the first time, opting for Peanut Butter Coconut mixed with toffee chips. The toffee chips took over the flavor and made the pb and coconut seem mild, but the base was fairly creamy. It tasted pretty clean with a hint of oat flavor.

I hope the soy milk base will still be offered. I did see some soy milk in the fridge, but not much of it. It’s so hard to find soy-based soft serve/frozen yogurt. They also had cashew milk, almond milk, and macadamia milk in the fridge.

I’ve been going to Old Town Pasadena periodically during the safer at home order and many businesses remain closed, including restaurants and retailers. Only a handful are open for takeout, like True Food Kitchen, Motto Tea CafĂ©, and Starbucks. Some retailers are offering curbside pickup. Madewell is behind on rent. The food hall on Union and Fair Oaks is expanding and taking over the old Gap and Crate & Barrel spaces.

There hasn’t been much foot traffic in the area for months. It could be tough for that area for a long time if the crowds don’t return.

P.S. 21 Choices just reopened in Claremont Village (Claremont, CA) as well.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Free Froyo at Participating Yogurtland Locations This Week & Catering Discount

Fro-yo girl here. Some Yogurtland locations across the country (e.g., Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Texas, California) gave out free pre-packed mini froyo cups with any purchase this week. The promotion didn’t happen on the same day and not all locations participated. I went to Yogurtland Alhambra to get my free mini cup today.

Yogurtland Alhambra was closed for a few weeks, probably a month, and I hadn’t been there since early March, before the safer at home issue was ordered for Los Angeles. It’s full service now and they blocked access to the machines and have markings on the floor that tell you where to stand. The toppings bar is covered with plastic wrap. The free cup was about 6 ounces and they had plenty of flavors from which to choose.

I still haven’t encountered the new flavor that was scheduled to come out in April, Orange Blossom White Peach light ice cream. The flavor finder says it’s not available in my area. One of the YL associates mentioned another new flavor on the horizon, chai tea.

Yogurtland has also been sending promo codes for ezCater orders on weekday deliveries through June 23 and promoting Froyo It Forward, as a way to thank everyday heroes and surprise loved ones. And Real Reward members get triple points on Thursdays in May.

The codes are ONLINE10 for $10 off online catering orders of $50 or more and SPRING25 for $25 off online catering orders of $100 or more.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Many Local Froyo Shops Have Reopened

Fro-yo girl here. The good news is that froyo shops around the world have started to reopen. In the US, it started in late April, since the stay at home order was set to expire on 4/30 in many parts of the country. In Los Angeles, which is still under the safer at home order, as some retail businesses, parks, and recreational facilities have reopened. The reopening of those businesses and facilities started around May 13. The safer at home order is expected to stay in effect until at least July for Los Angeles.

I’ve been venturing out for froyo and I haven’t encountered any shops that still allow self-serve. Self-service of unpackaged food is not allowed as of March 21 in California. It’s unclear when self-service will be allowed again. Signs must be posted by the entrance of each shop telling those with symptoms not to enter. Samples are not allowed. Everyone’s supposed to wear masks now when they are in public.

With the warmer weather, aka froyo weather, and the loosening of restrictions, I’ve noticed that many froyo shops have started to reopen. I’ve also noticed that the most popular day of the week to reopen is Friday with some shops are only open on weekends.

Menchie’s Eagle Rock and Yogurtland Alhambra reopened on Friday, May 15, the day the original safer at home order expired. 21 Choices in Pasadena remains closed and hasn’t provided any updates since closing on March 18. Their Claremont location is open and now offers online ordering. Yogurtland Downey reopened on Monday, May 11. Yogurtland Pasadena has reopened. At Yoga-urt, customers aren’t allowed inside the store. They place orders online or by phone. At Marcel's in South Africa, they take your temperature before you're allowed inside the shop.

In other states, some froyo shops have been allowed to open the dining area but at reduced capacity. These next few months are prime froyo season, so my fingers are crossed for a good one. I’m hoping that there’s a lot of pent up froyo demand out there. It seems pretty safe to get froyo these days.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Noosa HiLo Review

Fro-yo girl here. A few months ago, Noosa launched a new high protein, low sugar product line called HiLo. I found Noosa HiLo at Bristol Farms in South Pasadena, CA for $1.99, regular price. One cup is 5.3 oz. The flavors are blended. HiLow features 30% less sugar than Greek yogurt and 12g of protein.

Vanilla Bean: The thickness and texture reminded me of Greek yogurt. I could see lots of vanilla bean specks. While there’s less sugar, it was still plenty sweet for me. Compared to regular Noosa, HiLo was a bit thicker and not quite as flavorful. It had a different aftertaste, like cream. While it wasn’t as good as regular Noosa, I still liked it. The honey they add makes their yogurt taste different from other brands.

Strawberry: I’d say the same thing about Strawberry HiLo. It’s not as tangy and flavorful as the regular strawberry Noosa. I did like the tiny bits of strawberry. The cream aftertaste isn’t as nice as the regular Noosa aftertaste.

One serving (vanilla) is 170 calories, 7g total fat, 14g total carbs, 12g protein and 12g sugars

Ingredients: Whole milk yoghurt (Grade A pasteurized milk, live active cultures), Vanilla blend (water, cane sugar, natural flavor, pectin, locust bean gum, vanilla bean, lemon juice concentrate)

Available flavors: vanilla bean, mixed berry, blueberry, strawberry, peach and plain

The size is just right for breakfast or a snack.

Noosa Blended Yoghurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I used to prefer blended yogurt, because it saved you the extra step of having to stir your yogurt and the compote or whatever was on the bottom always seemed too sweet. My feelings changed once I started eating Noosa. I grew to appreciate the fact that it wasn’t already blended because you gently swirl the compote and have bites that tasted different.

I was surprised when Noosa recently launched a line of blended yogurt called Blended Noosa. I found Blended Noosa at Whole Foods (Glendale, CA) for $1.49 each. A cup is 4.5 oz, so it’s smaller than regular Noosa. It’s about the right size for a snack. One tub of Noosa Blended Strawberry is 150 calories with 6g fat, 19g total carbs, 18g sugars, and 6g protein.

Strawberry: Creamy, thick, tangy, super flavorful, smooth, a few tiny strawberry pieces. Just as good as the unblended. In fact, it seems the same only smaller and blended for you.

Mixed Berry: Made with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries, the mixed berry yogrt is not as tangy or as flavorful as the strawberry, but still tasty. It has the same amount of sugar as the strawberry. In color (pale purple) and flavor, it reminded me the most of blueberry. I could see a few tiny berry bits.

Ingredients (Strawberry): Grade A Pasteurized Whole Milk, Fruit Purée (Strawberries, Water, Cane Sugar, Natural Flavors, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Fruit and Vegetable Juice [for color]), Cane Sugar, Wildflower Honey, Kosher Gelatin, Pectin, Live Active Cultures.

Available flavors: Strawberry, Mixed Berry, Raspberry, Key Lime, Coffee, Vanilla Bean

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Flavor at Yoga-urt: Maple Banana Pancake

Fro-yo girl here. Yoga-urt just came out with a new flavor, their first in 2020: Maple Banana Pancake. A lot of their fans asked for a banana flavor. It just so happens that my least favorite flavor in the world is banana. But, I’ve tried banana froyo several times just out of dedication to froyo. If I taste a hint of banana in anything, I won’t like it. I do, however, love pancakes and I’m okay with maple (don’t love or hate it).

Maple Banana Pancake: It’s made with roasted bananas. Does roasting make bananas taste better? I have no idea. The banana flavor was definitely there but it wasn’t overwhelming because the base and the pancake flavor balanced it. I’m not sure that I tasted maple. It did taste like a baked good like bread or cake but not banana bread. Recommended toppings: chocolate chips, cacao nibs, and mochi.

Maple Banana Pancake is organic, vegan, kosher, gluten-free, soy-free, probiotic, and all natural. Yes, all those things.

Yoga-urt is offering delivery through Postmates and Grubhub and takeout. Customers aren’t allowed inside the store. The menu is posted in the window. You call in your order and pay over the phone and someone brings it out in a bag when it’s ready. Grubhub is currently offering free delivery on your first order.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
