Yogurtland Opens in Hastings Ranch/East Pasadena

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the new Yogurtland in East Pasadena/Hastings Ranch and after a few false alarms (e.g., Google reported the shop was open when it hadn’t opened yet), I can report that it is now OPEN!

I asked about a grand opening event and was told that they wouldn’t be having one. There was a free froyo giveaway on August 19 while they were training employees.

This is a smaller location with 12 self-serve froyo flavors and toppings for $0.69/oz. I was happy to see the gourmet sauces, including chocolate shell. The green square tile wall has been replaced with a white tile wall. They also have a neon sign that says Share Love, Joy & Hope.

Yogurtland has another location in Pasadena on Lake Ave. There was one in Old Town Pasadena that closed a few years ago.

Enlightened Greek Yogurt Cheesecake Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’m not a huge fan of classic cheesecake (I do like Japanese cheesecake, the fluffy kind), so I wasn’t in a hurry to try Enlightened’s Greek Yogurt Cheesecake. They launched Greek yogurt cheesecake a year ago (April 2022) in two flavors: classic and chocolate. The product is described as “New York-style Greek yogurt cheesecake with a graham cracker crust and a dollop of whipped cream on top.” It has up to 50 percent less sugar compared to the same size serving of regular cheesecake. The main ingredient is Greek yogurt.

One box contains two individually packaged frozen mini cheesecakes with a suggested retail price of $5.99. Each cheesecake comes in a lidded cup. I found the cheesecakes at Grocery Outlet for $2.49. You’re supposed to either microwave the cheesecake, thaw it at room temperature or thaw in the refrigerator. I left the cheesecakes in the fridge for over the recommended 45 – 60 minutes (didn’t read the instructions carefully), so that may have affected the flavor and texture.

Classic cheesecake: It was smooth and creamy but didn’t taste like cream cheese or yogurt. I thought it tasted like plastic. Maybe the plastic of the cup it was in? The whipped cream was chewy and also tasted like plastic. The crust was soft but had a little more flavor. I could taste cinnamon and molasses.

One cheesecake is 190 calories with 11g of total fat, 19g total carbs, 8g total sugars, and 6g protein.

I had to throw the cheesecakes out. I do appreciate the lower sugar aspect but the cheesecakes taste like plastic.

1.5 out of 5 stars.

Free Froyo at Menchie’s AGT Event

Fro-yo girl here. NBC’s America’s Got Talent sponsored a free froyo event at Menchie’s today. The first 50 guests at Menchie’s at 3 PM received their first 5 oz of froyo free. I arrived at 3:02 PM and was told that the event started early, so the first 50 people had already gotten their froyo. Pretty lame, Menchie’s Eagle Rock.

FYI, there’s still time to enter the NBC America’s Got Talent sweepstakes. The prize is an all-expense trip to Los Angeles to attend a live taping of AGT. To enter, scan your Menchie’s app in-store from now until August 31. AGT tapings occur at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. I’ve seen the banners many times.

AGT is on NBC on Tuesday nights. When you order Menchie’s delivery from DoorDash on Tuesdays in August, you’ll get $3 off your order of $20 or more.

Froyo Guide to San Ramon, CA

Yogurtland San Ramon, 2009 - old logo, pink & green mochi

One of my cups of froyo from Yogurtland San Ramon

Fro-yo girl here. San Ramon, located in Contra Costa County, is home to about 79,000. It’s one of the safest places to live in California. I used to work there and was at the Yogurtland grand opening on July 24, 2009. Top This! was the first froyo shop in the area (though older shops may have existed) that I knew about though there was a TCBY that predated Top This!

Today, there’s just one froyo shop left, Menchie’s. Menchie’s first opened at 3104 Crow Canyon Pl, Suite B, in 2016.

Former Froyo Shops in San Ramon

  • Frozen Café, 2475 San Ramon Valley Blvd, Ste 4, opened in 2014 and closed in 2020. It seems like the pandemic is what led to the closure. They served one froyo flavor, vanilla, and Dole Whip. They also had crepes, smoothies, ice cream, milkshakes, and floats.
  • Pinkberry, 3104 Crow Canyon Pl, Ste 2, took over my regular lunch spot, a hot dog shop called The Dog Out. This branch opened in 2010 and closed in 2015.
  • TCBY, 2475 San Ramon Valley Blvd, closed November 2008. I’m not sure when it first opened.
  • Top This! Yogurt Bar, 11020 Bollinger Canyon Rd, was the first self-serve froyo shop in San Ramon. I went once in 2009 and thought it was pretty awful.
  • Tutti Frutti, 2475 San Ramon Valley Blvd, opened in the same shopping center as Safeway in 2010. It was a smaller location with a self-serve format. The shop closed in 2012 and Frozen Café took over the space in 2014.
  • Yogurtland, 152 Sunset Dr., opened in July 2009 at the Shops at Bishop Ranch and closed in 2020. It was a great location. I visited many times and only have positive memories. It's where I honed my froyo swirling skills. Yogurtland San Ramon wasn’t the first Yogurtland that I’d been to (Yogurtland Cupertino was my first) but it was my regular Yogurtland, the one where I got my first Yogurtland Tokidoki & Sanrio spoons. It was only $0.30/oz when they first opened.

San Ramon mostly had national froyo franchises but there were a few independents.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Pinkberry Flavor, Spiced Autumn Cider Tart Froyo

Fro-yo girl here. It’s fall froyo time and Pinkberry just released their new fall flavor, Spiced Autumn Cider tart frozen yogurt. Pinkberry describes the flavor as “the perfect balance of crisp apple flavor and warm cider spice in a frozen sweet treat.” The recommended toppings are crumbole, apple cinnamon pie topping, and ground cinnamon.

I was pleasantly surprised that the Pinkberry in Los Feliz had the new flavor on the day it was launched, August 25. Based on the sample, I couldn’t imagine eating a whole cup of Spiced Autumn Cider. The froyo in the sample cup was loose and icy. The apple flavor and tartness were the first things I noticed (and liked) but the cinnamon and tartness didn’t complement each other. I’d rather see the return of the pumpkin flavor.

Spiced autumn cider froyo is available in participating stores until November 2, 2023.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Le Café De La Plage Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich Review

Fro-yo girl here. Le Café De La Plage is a cafe in Malibu, California. I’ve never been there but I have seen their pints of sorbet and ice cream sandwiches in supermarkets like Whole Foods, Lassens, and Bristol Farms. They don’t have any froyo.

Whole Foods had Le Café De La Plage macaron ice cream sandwiches for $4.99 each. Their products are non-GMO.

Rose macaron ice cream sandwich: The rose, raspberry, and lychee ice cream is sandwiched between two pink macaron discs. The macaron was delicate and light. The ice cream was so good – mostly tasted like rose but the lychee and raspberry made it more interesting and slightly tangy yet floral. It was dense, smooth, and creamy. I also liked the size – perfect for a snack.

One 80g sandwich is 220 calories, 10g total fat, 27g total carbs, 25g total sugars, and 4g protein.

Yogurtland To Open on August 31 in East Pasadena/Hastings Ranch

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the new Yogurtland in East Pasadena/Hastings Ranch. The Google listing incorrectly said it was open when it hadn’t opened yet. Now Google says the shop will open on Thursday, August 31. We’ll see if it’s true.

Pita GR Opens in Brea, California (North Orange County)

Pita GR in Brea, CA

Spaceman USA machine

Greek froyo with vissino

Fro-yo girl here. I was out of town for one week and missed the grand opening of Pita GR in Brea, CA, on August 8. During the grand opening, they even served free lunch: a pita or a salad with a beverage.

Pita GR is a Greek street food fast casual restaurant that first opened in Downey, CA in September 2018. The chef is Greek. The restaurant is inspired by the traditional Greek pita sandwich shops in Greece. The Brea location is their second and their first in Orange County.

They make their own frozen Greek yogurt with their own recipe. There's one flavor, plain, with Greek toppings: Greek honey, housemade baklava or Greek sour cherry preserves. You can also enjoy the froyo plain. I noticed they switched soft serve machines and now use Spaceman USA (the Downey location has a Carpigiani soft serve freezer).

Greek froyo with vissino ($6): Their Greek froyo is excellent: smooth, creamy, dense. It tastes fresh, mildly tangy, and has a clean finish. It doesn’t seem as sweet or processed as the froyo you get most places. They layered the froyo with sour cherries and sour cherry syrup. The cherries are more sweet than sour but the syrup makes the froyo tangier.

The food is good too! I usually get a salad and froyo for dessert.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

* PITA GR: 2445 E Imperial Hwy, Unit F, Brea, CA 92821

The End of Yalla Mediterranean

site of Yalla Burbank

Fro-yo girl here. Back in June 2020, I wrote about how Yalla Mediterranean was no longer serving Greek froyo at any of their locations. Once they stopped serving froyo, I stopped going, of course. In March 2021, I noticed that half of Yalla’s locations had closed. Now I’ve learned that all their locations have closed.

Yalla Culver City, Walnut Creek, and Burbank closed about a year ago. Yalla seems to have closed in Culver City in February 2022. The last Yalla post on Instagram and Facebook was made in April 2022.

The Yalla space in Burbank is going to become Dave’s Hot Chicken.

Yalla was a new concept from Daphne’s that launched in 2014. Their Greek froyo was a bit icy but I did like it. I appreciated the small portion which was perfect for dessert.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pressed Reformulates Freeze

Fro-yo girl here. Sometimes change isn’t for the better. I’ve eaten probably a hundred cups of Pressed Freeze over the years and Vanilla Freeze was my favorite. Yes, it was icy and a bit gritty but it was also natural tasting, with minimal ingredients, and it had a clean, not too sweet taste.

Recently I ordered Vanilla Freeze and it wasn’t the same. They reformulated Vanilla Freeze “for a creamier taste” and “better mouthfeel.” It’s still an all-natural, plant-based product but they added more ingredients. The old Vanilla Freeze was made with almond, dates, sea salt, and vanilla.

Vanilla Freeze now has coconut milk, oat flour, tapioca syrup, agave syrup, citrus fiber, etc. It’s not as clean as it used to be (they’ve added a lot more ingredients). One serving is now 260 calories with 12g total fat, 36g total carbs, and 16g of total sugars.

Vanilla Freeze: The reformulated Vanilla Freeze tastes sweeter. It’s also thicker, creamier, and not as clean. The sweetness overwhelmed the flavor of the toppings. I’m going to stick to the juices and nut milks.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Jolly Llama Half-Dipped Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Jolly Llama just introduced a line of new half dipped yogurt bars. I found them at Sprouts. Three flavors are exclusive to Sprouts: Cool Mint Chip, Chocolate Fudge, and Coffee Espresso. The yogurt bars are dairy-free and gluten-free, according to Sprouts. However, if you look at the box, it says it contains milk and is a dairy product. The bars are kosher.

A box of four bars was $4.99 on sale and $6.99 regular price. One yogurt bar is 2.65 fl oz. The bars contain probiotics.

Cool Mint Chip: Described as “white mint frozen yogurt with chocolaty flakes half-dipped in a chocolaty coating.” It tasted like peppermint. The mint flavor is very strong. It’s refreshing. The texture is softer than Yasso’s bars. The chocolatey coating was sweet, thin, and crispy. I thought the texture was a bit too soft but the flavor was better than I expected – if you like strong mint flavors. One bar is 100 calories with 6g total fat, 5g total carbs, 9g total sugars, and 2g of protein. It’s made with kefir yogurt and sweetened with allulose, stevia, and monk fruit.

Available flavors: Coffee Espresso, Lemon Cheesecake, Cool Mint Chip, Strawberry ‘N Cream, Chocolate Fudge

Jolly Llama’s other frozen treats are dairy-free and gluten-free. I tried their sorbet back in 2009.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

L2 Tea Club Serves Fried Yogurt Cubes in San Gabriel

Fro-yo girl here. I started noticing new froyo cube shops opening in Asia and Australia in early 2022. The first one in the US that I knew about was in Seattle. For a history of the thick cut yogurt cubes and slices trend, read IFYA’s post, New Froyo Trend: Froyo Cubes and Yogurt Slices. Froyo cubes and slices are made on freezing pans in one piece and then cut into shapes after the freezing process.

I found a local milk tea shop that started offering froyo cubes in 2022. L2 Tea Club opened in November 2021 in San Gabriel, CA. L2 has six flavors of fried yogurt. The available flavors were: Jasmine Lady Meteor, Rose Lychee O’hara Garden Meteor, Mango Diamond Meteor, and Osmanthus Peach Wonderland. One order is $11.95 and comes with 6 big yogurt cubes. One yogurt cube was about 3” length x 2” height x 3” width. I was told that the yogurt cubes were made earlier that day.

They were out of Sun Galaxy and Moon Galaxy yogurt cubes.

Rose Lychee O’hara Golden Meteor Fried Yogurt Cubes: I was pleasantly surprised! The yogurt was very flavorful and very tangy. It’s dense and icy but refreshing. Also, the cubes did not melt quickly. The top of the cubes had dried rose petals. The cubes had bits of lychee and also chewy mochi. Rose and lychee are such complementary flavors.

Bring a friend to share an order because you get a lot of froyo in one cup. I wish they had a smaller size and also allowed you to build your own cup by selecting multiple flavors. The cubes were huge too. I’d prefer a cube that was bite-sized.

You could try making froyo cubes at home with ice cube tray.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Crèmily French Frozen Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Crèmily is the world’s first Keto French frozen yogurt. It’s low carb, made with no added sugar, and made with A2 milk. The froyo is high protein, high fat, gluten-free, and contains probiotics and prebiotics. The packaging says Crèmily’s founder is Kylie Schuyler and that Schuyler recruited “top chefs and nutritionists to merge traditional, artisanal French yogurt recipes with modern techniques and the highest quality ingredients.” Sounds good to me.

I found Crèmily pints at Vons in Eagle Rock for $5.99 each, regular price. One container is 16 oz. You can also find Crèmily at Pavilions.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip froyo: The froyo was frozen rock solid. After waiting ten minutes, it was still rock solid. Twenty minutes later, I could scoop a bit of it but it was still hard. The froyo was creamy and sweet, as sweet as regular froyo. The peanut butter flavor was light but noticeable. It took quite a bit of digging to find the chocolate slivers. I’m not sure if the slivers count as chocolate chips. Overall, the flavors were on the bland side and there was a chalkiness.

One serving (2/3 cup) is 230 calories, 18g total fat, 21g total carbs, 4g total sugars, and 8g protein. The main ingredients are whole milk and cream. It’s sweetened with monk fruit and erythritol.

The Crèmily Foundation programs empower girls globally. One hundred percent of Crèmily’s profits go to the charitable foundation.

Available flavors (pints): Peanut butter chocolate chip; Salted caramel; Strawberry; Chocolate; Café Gourmand; French vanilla

Crèmily also has a line of froyo pops but I haven’t seen them.

3 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland New Cereal Flavors & New Cereal Toppings

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland just came out with their back-to-school promotion, with two breakfast-inspired froyo flavors, Cinnamon Churro Cereal and Peanut Butter Cocoa Cereal, and two new toppings, Chocolate Chip Cookie Bites and S’mores. The new flavors and toppings should be in stores around August 7.

Cinnamon Churro Cereal froyo is made with real cinnamon. It’s described as, “This delicious treat captures the sweet cinnamon flavor of the beloved morning cereal.” The cinnamon flavor seemed stronger than Yogurtland’s Churro froyo. It was also icy. I prefer their Churro flavor.

Peanut Butter Cocoa Cereal
froyo is made with real peanut butter and cocoa. It’s described as, “A throwback to the classic cereal with peanut butter and chocolatey goodness.” The flavor is lowfat. It’s also flavored with corn, caramel, and vanilla wafer cookies. I love peanut butter and I like some peanut butter cocoa cereal but I found Peanut Butter Cocoa Cereal froyo to taste strange. I couldn’t even finish the sample. It was terrible – too much corn? Too much caramel? Hated it.

The S’mores topping looked like mini marshmallows, cinnamon graham crackers and chocolate cereal. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Bites looked like the Cookie Crisp cereal.

Also in August, Real Reward members can earn double points on in-store and online purchases every Tuesday.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Flavors of Noosa Frozen Yoghurt Gelato, Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar (& Others)

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been looking for the new Noosa frozen yoghurt gelato flavors ever since I first heard about them in March of this year. While Target carries Noosa frozen yoghurt gelato, I haven’t seen the new flavors there. Well, I finally spotted the new flavors at Gelson’s in La Canada Flintridge, CA, for $5.99 each. One container is 14 oz.

The new frozen yoghurt gelato flavors announced in March 2023 were:

  • Amaze-mint Chocolatey Chunk
  • Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar
  • Cookies & Oh-So-Creamy

The few reviews that I found online of Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar were all very positive. Noosa describes the flavor as “is a smooth, creamy sensation. Extra creamy, oh-so-dreamy smooth lemon flavored frozen yoghurt gelato filled with lemon bar pieces and luscious swirls of icing. A one-of-a-kind find.” People Magazine named Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar frozen yoghurt gelato as the Best Frozen Yogurt in 2023, based on their taste tests.

Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar:
If you like sweet lemon desserts, you’ll like this frozen yoghurt gelato. It tastes like lemon cake. There is no tang or sourness. It does not taste like yogurt or Noosa lemon yogurt. It’s definitely sweet (too sweet for me) but pleasant, creamy, rich, and dense. It’s very scoopable. The lemon bar pieces were chewy like bits of pie crust. The icing swirls weren’t too overwhelming. The icing is a little sweeter than the gelato, which is already very sweet. If you like tangy lemon and the taste of yogurt, Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar won’t be your dream lemon flavor.

Out of This Swirl Lemon Bar has live and active cultures. One serving (2/3 cup) is 310 calories, 17g total fat, 35g total carbs, 32g of sugar, and 4g of protein. The main ingredient is cream. It also contains whole milk yoghurt.

Want to know what I thought of some of the other Noosa frozen yoghurt gelato flavors? See my earlier review.

Menchie’s August: New Flavor, New Contest, DoorDash Offer, Free Froyo

Fro-yo girl here. Happy August! It’s a busy month at Menchie’s again, with two featured flavors, a new contest, free froyo event, and a DoorDash offer.

S’mores froyo made with Hershey’s chocolate and real graham crackers is back by popular demand. FYI, August 10 is National S’mores Day. The flavor is lowfat and made with no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup.

Sweet Plum froyo is a NEW flavor. The flavor is nonfat, gluten-free, and made with no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup. It was smooth and creamy, fruity (tasted like berries), sweet, and slightly tangy. But it didn’t taste like plum. The fruit flavor was muted and slightly bitter. Recommended toppings: fresh berries, Fruity Pebbles, peach rings.

Menchie’s featured flavors are available for a limited time, while supplies last.

The winner of Menchie’s new NBC America’s Got Talent sweepstakes will win an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to attend a live taping of AGT. To enter, scan your Menchie’s app in-store from now until August 31.

Also, when you order Menchie’s delivery from DoorDash on Tuesdays in August, you’ll get $3 off your order of $20 ore more. Enjoy Menchie’s while you watch the new episode of AGT at 8/7c on NBC.

Finally, save the date, August 29. The first 50 guests at Menchie’s at 3 PM on 8/29 will get their first 5 oz of froyo free, thanks to AGT.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Smorgasburg LA’s Ice Cream Alley Report

Fro-yo girl here. Smorgasburg LA brought back Ice Cream Alley recently, during National Ice Cream Month. The special ice cream pop-up launched on July 16 and continues every Sunday through September 3. Ice Cream Alley is a part of the outdoor market set aside for ice cream and sweets vendors.

The event is free and the first two hours of parking is free. Smorgasburg LA is open from 10 AM – 4 PM.

The first Ice Cream Alley took place in 2017. This year, the public will choose which vendor will be Smorgasburg’s full-time ice cream vendor.

List of Ice Cream Alley Vendors

  • 626 Hospitality Group: ice cream floats
  • Creamy Boys: New Zealand style mix-in style fruit ice cream
  • Donut Friend: ice cream cups & ice cream sandwiches
  • Evil Cooks: ice cream tacos, including an innovative trompo de ice cream (café con leche). It looks like a big cone of ice cream on a vertical spit.
  • Happy Ice: Philly water ice, also known as Italian ice outside of Philly
  • Kinrose Creamery: creamery with Middle Eastern roots
  • Moom Maam (new): Thai gelato with interesting flavors like black sesame, Uji matcha, and Thai tea
  • Nobuko Shave Ice (new): authentic shave ice
  • Sad Girl Creamery: ice cream tacos
  • Scoops on Tap: ice cream with fresh waffle cones made to order
I didn’t see any frozen yogurt and the most innovative thing there was the ice cream trompo at Evil Cooks. I didn’t see the trompo though, so maybe they sold out before I arrived.

Kinrose Creamery’s flavors were the most appealing (sour cherry & cream ice cream, citrus rose granita, honey walnut baklava ice cream) and they were generous with samples. I was impressed with their toppings and ice cream flavors.
