Cup O’Tea Has Closed in Menlo Park

Fro-yo girl here. For completeness, I wanted to mention that Cup O’Tea, which replaced Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt in late 2018, has closed its doors for good. It lasted a little over a year. Cup O’Tea kept Tutti Frutti’s froyo machines, signs, and cups. They offered self-serve froyo, milk tea, other drinks and snacks.

The last real review was three months ago on Google and November 2019 on Yelp. There was a subsequent review a month ago, but it just said that they’re never open. They never finished their website or had a social media presence.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Soy Froyo, Wherefore Art Thou?

Fro-yo girl here. Did you know that April is National Soy Foods Month? This is the month to celebrate the soybean and it made me miss soy frozen yogurt all the more. Anti-soy sentiment has been around for years, probably because most domestic soybean crops are genetically modified. But, there isn’t strong evidence that GMO-soybeans are harmful. In fact, soy has many health benefits. Soy is a complete protein that’s low in saturated fat. It may reduce levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), diabetes risk and the risk of some types of cancer.

Years ago, Loving Cup in San Francisco offered a soy base option for their hand-mixed froyo. But, since soy fell out of favor, they switched to a banana base and the last time I went, the vegan option was coconut based. Fraiche used to have a soy froyo but all their locations have closed, except for the one at SFO International Airport. Also, I think they switched to making vegan froyo using almond milk.

Tutti Frutti and 16 Handles are the only sizeable chains that have introduced soy froyo. Tutti Frutti may still offer soy froyo but I haven’t seen it there for years.

These are the places where you can still get soy froyo.
  1. 16 Handles introduced its first soy flavor in 2014, Yo Soy Vanilla, followed by Yo Soy Chocolate. I’m not sure how often it’s offered now, especially since they’ve gone on to introduce other types of dairy-free froyo, including almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, and oat milk (new in 2020).
  2. 21 Choices Frozen Yogurt (Claremont & Pasadena, CA): The soy froyo is made with organic soy milk and their flavors are all made in-house. Soy froyo is sometimes offered. Even if it isn’t there, they always have a dairy-free option. I like their peanut butter soy froyo.
  3. Bishco (Gloucester, MA) is a cafe that also serves mix in froyo, including tofu froyo.
  4. Cafe 472 (Boston, MA) serves pizza, sandwiches, salads, and froyo, including tofu frozen yogurt.
  5. Cafe Podima (Boston, MA) is a pizza restaurant that also serves froyo. Tofu froyo is listed on the menu.
  6. Chil (London, ON, Canada) claims to have Canada’s largest selection of froyo toppings and vegan froyo, had soy froyo but I’m not sure if they still offer it. They also have vegan froyo made with almond milk, oat milk, and quinoa milk. The single location is self-serve.
  7. Citra (Seattle, WA) in Seattle’s University District has dairy-based froyo but it’s the soy froyo that gets the rave reviews. Try your froyo with snow ice.
  8. Frozen By a Thousand Blessings (Australia), the first froyo shop in Australia to use biodynamic milk and yoghurt, offers two vegan soy-based flavors, Mango & Soy and Soy Strawberry. The froyo is self-serve.
  9. Humphrey Yogart (Sherman Oaks, CA): Humphrey Yogart has been serving up old school mix in style froyo since 1984. They moved across the parking lot and into Gelson’s in 2016 but they brought their organic soy base option for mix in froyo with them. I like their matcha froyo that’s made with imported Japanese matcha powder.
  10. Kushco Bistro (Salem, MA) is another greater Boston eatery that carries tofu froyo with mix-ins. I'm sensing a pattern here. Bishco and Kushco sound so similar.
  11. Moochie (Belgium) is a counter serve froyo chain that according to Happy Cow, offers vegan soy froyo. There’s even proof in the form of a picture.
  12. Tutti Frutti (worldwide) started offering soybean frozen yogurt in 2012. The soybean froyo is made with non-GMO, US grown soybeans. Their range of 19 soy froyo flavors is the widest I’ve seen. Some of the soy flavors are Spiced Cake, Red Bean, Latte, Black Sesame, and Taro. And 10% of the sales go to the Real Green Project to help fight childhood hunger. I noticed that many Tutti Frutti locations don’t carry any soy flavors though. Tutti Frutti La Crescenta used to on a regular basis but then they closed (and moved). I haven’t been going to the new location, so I’m not sure how often they carry soy froyo.
  13. Yo-Chi (Australia) is a self-serve froyo mini chain that sometimes offers a soy-based froyo. Banana Soybean is one of their soy flavors.
  14. Yo-Get-It (Australia, China) has a variety of soy froyo flavors and a self-serve format. Soy froyo flavors include Banana, Chai, Mango, Passionfruit, and Wildberry.
  15. YOMARO (Germany) offers a vegan soy froyo that gets good reviews, along with the vegan bubble waffles.
  16. YOMG (Australia) started as a self-serve froyo shop and expanded into burgers. Their vegan soy froyo flavors include banana soy cinnamon and soy chai. They even have vegan burgers and vegan waffle cones.
  17. Yumorama (Mexico) is a self-serve froyo chain that has a soy froyo option that’s also free of added sugars

Even though it isn’t froyo, I did want to give a shout out to the tofu flower soft serve at Big Softee in Monterey Park, CA. If you like tofu pudding, Big Softee’s version has the ginger syrup and flavor of tofu/soy milk that you’ll recognize. Uji Time has tofu soft serve too, but it isn’t as good as Big Softee’s.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

The New Normal Froyo Experience

Fro-yo girl here. Well, the stay at home order hasn’t been lifted yet in Los Angeles. I did just go to Yogurtland and Menchie’s, because froyo is essential. I hadn’t been to either for a few weeks and it was interesting to see that it’s no longer self-serve. The associate fills the cup with froyo and adds toppings for you. It worked well since I knew how many ounces I wanted but I did get more toppings than usual. Their scoops seem bigger than my scoops.

Yogurtland San Gabriel added plastic wrap that covers all the toppings from the side facing the dining area and installed a Plexiguard shield by the register. Oh, and they only had 10 flavors of froyo vs. the usual 16. Menchie’s Valley Village didn’t have all that but most of their toppings are always covered (they use plastic stackable containers for the dry toppings). They put chairs in front of the self-serve area to keep the public out and also marked where customers should stand to keep people 6 feet apart.

The last time I went to Yogurtland on March 19, I was still able to serve myself but they provided gloves for everyone. In early March, the experience was completely normal. It could be months before self-service returns???

What else has changed? I’ve been sharing examples of froyo shops that are showing their support through froyo donations and discounts for first responders and healthcare workers and those that are asking for help on GoFundMe and Indiegogo. Events and new promotions have been delayed since many froyo shops are closed. Most of the ones that are still open have reduced their hours and switched to full service, takeout and delivery only. I've seen delivery discounts and froyo family packs. Some shops have reopened but with added safety procedures in place. Restaurant employees now wear masks and gloves in California.

I like how TCBY, Menchie’s, Yogurtland, sweetFrog and others are providing free activities (coloring sheets, mazes) and Zoom backgrounds that remind people of froyo and how much they love froyo. Yogurtland even has a contest, #froyoflashback, where people share their fond memories of Yogurtland for a chance to win Yogurtland gift cards.

I know that I love froyo as much as ever and I’d like to think that absence will make the heart fonder for most froyo consumers.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s New Spring Froyo Spoon

Fro-yo girl here. With Menchie’s Hello Sunshine Spring Party postponed until who knows when, I wasn’t sure what the status would be for the new spring spoons that they had planned to hand out at the party. But, I’ve been seeing the new yellow Sprinkle spoons on social media. I found some at Menchie’s Valley Village, CA, the first Menchie’s location.

The Spring Sprinkle spoon features Sprinkle holding a watering can on the front. The front of the spoon says “let it grow” and is adorned with flowers and the sun. On the back, you can see the back of Sprinkle and a pot with a flower growing out of it. The color is a cheerful yellow. Very cute!

The spoon is collectible and available for a limited time only. It’s the first new Menchie’s spoon of the year.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Help Yogurtland Moreno Valley on Indiegogo

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve known about GoFundMe for years, but I just now learned of another online fundraising platform called Indiegogo. And yes, more froyo shops could use your help.

Yogurtland, Moreno Valley, CA, @yogurtland_moreno_valley

Yogurtland Moreno Valley would like to raise $500 and they’re offering several deals to help reach that goal.

Option 1: Regular cup + giant YL spoon for $7 (30% off)

Option 2: 2 regular cups of froyo + coupon book for $15 (34% off)

Option 3: 4 regular cups & a cooler bag for $25 (37% off)

https://igg.me/p/2594181/twtr

Surprisingly, I only found one froyo shop with a current campaign on Indiegogo! But I like the idea of offering future perks in exchange for funding now.

Winner of the 2020 Easter Froyo Shop Spirit Award

Fro-yo girl here. Easter definitely doesn’t feel the same this year, since we’re still under “stay at home” orders here in California. Many froyo shops are closed around the world right now, sadly. But, the holiday must go on and there’s still some froyo Easter spirit out there.

Last year’s Easter Froyo Shop winner was the Yog Bar UK. They demonstrated their Easter froyo spirit by creating Luxury Egg Yog Sundaes (giant chocolate eggs filled with froyo and toppings) and holding an Easter contest with Wolf + Lamb. Unfortunately, the Yog Bar is currently closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

This year, Pinkberry Japan has really cute Easter creations again. Yogurt Mill just brought back Marshmallow Peeps froyo. DAIREE in Australia has hot cross buns stuffed with hot cross bun froyo with cinnamon sauce (wow). I've seen lots of Easter froyo pies and cakes. TCBY, Yogurtland, and sweetFrog provided free Easter crafts online.

Without further ado, this year’s winner of the Easter Froyo Shop Spirit Award is…Yo Mama Frozen Yogurt (@yomamafroyohk) in Hong Kong (multiple locations). Yo Mama just introduced a new Easter-inspired froyo flavor, Golden Egg Tart froyo flavor, topped with gooey caramel sauce. What’s so brilliant about this new flavor is that it’s so appropriate for Easter (eggs) and Hong Kong (egg tarts). The caramel sauce would add a nice salty kick but I’d love to top it with the flaky egg tart crust too.

I’ve never had egg tart froyo before but I was inspired to pair egg tarts with froyo back in 2017 and I have the post to prove it. Egg tarts went well with froyo. What I’d like to try next is a warm pineapple bun filled not with a pat of butter, custard or cream, but with froyo. I also read a few HK egg tart recipes that didn’t seem too complicated. Maybe I’ll make some at home.

For more Easter froyo pics, check out the Pinterest board, Easter Froyo Pics. There are over 400 Easter froyo images.

Happy Froyo Easter!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Original/Plain Tart Taste Test

Fro-yo girl here. I recently brought home original tart froyo from Pinkberry, Menchie's and Yogurtland. It’s usually hard to do a side by side comparison of froyo flavors because froyo melts, but I was curious to see how I would perceive and rate the plain tart froyo from three major froyo chains. Of course, since the frozen yogurt had been sitting in my freezer for days, the texture wasn’t as nice as when it comes out of the soft serve machine.

Pinkberry: I found their original tart to be the tangiest and most flavorful and the smoothest, almost lemony/citrusy in flavor, icier in texture.

Yogurtland: Their Plain Tart resembled Pinkberry’s more so than Menchie’s Plain Tart. The icier texture and flavor were similar to Pinkberry, but Yogurtland’s Plain Tart wasn’t as tangy. It was more sweet than tangy.

Menchie’s: Menchie’s Original Tart was the creamiest of the three and it also was the least tangy but sourer than the other two. It more closely resembled plain yogurt and reminded me of Forty Carrots' plain tart. But, it was also less flavorful.

All three versions of Original/Plain Tart were tasty but not tangy enough for me. Since I love tanginess, I crown Pinkberry the winner of the Original/Plain Tart taste test.

Here's a comparison of the ingredients of each.

Pinkberry Original Frozen Yogurt: nonfat milk, sugar, nonfat yogurt [pasteurized nonfat milk, pectin, live and active cultures] or [pasteurized nonfat milk, live and active cultures], nonfat yogurt powder [nonfat milk, culture], fructose, dextrose, natural flavors, citric acid, guar gum

Yogurtland Plain Tart: Pasteurized and Cultured Skim Milk, Water, Sugar, Dextrose, Stabilizer & Emulsifier (Locust Bean Gum, Xanthan gum, Carrageenan), Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Maltodextrin.

Menchie’s Original Tart: Pasteurized & Cultured Skim Milk, Sugar, Water, Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, Whey, Natural Flavors, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Stabilizer & Emulsifier (Mono & Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Carrageenan), Citric Acid, Disodium Phosphate

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Dairy-Free Oui by Yoplait Coconut Yogurt Alternative Review

Fro-yo girl here. Coconut-based yogurt seems to be the in thing in 2020. Oui by Yoplait, which started out as a pot-set French style dairy yogurt, introduced a plant-based dairy alternative yogurt made with coconut in December 2019. The distribution of Dairy-Free Oui was expanded in January 2020. I found Dairy-Free Oui at Target, on sale for 3 for $4. The regular price is $2.35 for a 5 oz pot. The glass jar has changed to one with straighter sides.

Vanilla: Creamy, smooth, light texture, similar to regular yogurt. It tasted more like coconut than vanilla and had a coconut cream aftertaste. It was sweeter than it needed to be but mild and pleasant. One serving has 170 calories, 10g total fat, 12g total sugars, 19g total carbohydrates and 1g protein.

Strawberry: Similar to the vanilla but it had a chunk strawberry puree on the bottom. The yogurt tasted more like coconut than strawberry, but I could taste the strawberry throughout. The strawberry flavor is stronger towards the bottom of the jar. I wish it had less sugar.

Available flavors: vanilla, strawberry, raspberry, mango.

Ingredients: Coconut base (water, coconut cream, cane sugar, modified tapioca starch, malic acid, natural flavor, vanilla extract), cultures.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
