Summer at Pinkberry: New Flavor, New Topping, & Summer Crush Sweepstakes

Fro-yo girl here. Summer froyo time is here. Pinkberry just released its summer froyo flavor, Summer Melon Crush. They recommend pairing it with honeydew, watermelon, lime zest, and spiced nuts. The spiced nuts are a creative new topping.

Summer Melon Crush froyo: The froyo is light green and tastes like honeydew, only tarter. Honeydew isn’t usually tart, so it surprised me a bit. The texture was smooth and light. I thought it was interesting but didn’t love it. Recommended toppings: mochi and watermelon.

The spiced nuts are basically a spiced trail mix. The flavor is sweet and savory. It reminded me a bit of a BBQ flavor. I spotted almonds, peanuts, pepitas, corn nuts, and crackers. The spiced nuts (aka trail mix) added a nice crunch to the froyo.

Pinkberry also announced the Summer Crush Sweeps. Two winners will be chosen. The grand prize winner gets an Emily Henry book bundle, Pinkberry swag, and a $50 Pinkberry gift card. The second prize winner will get an Emily Henry curated book bundle, Pinkberry swag, and a $50 Pinkberry gift card. No purchase is necessary to enter the sweepstakes.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Froyo Scene in Temple City, CA

Fro-yo girl here. Temple City is a small city located in west San Gabriel Valley, about 13 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population is about 33,834 with an average household income of $130,578 and a median age of 43 years. Predominately Asian (64%), many of the businesses in the area cater to that population.

Sadly, there is no froyo shop left in Temple City, but they did have three places that once served froyo. Two are still open but no longer offer froyo. The last time you could get froyo in Temple City was back in 2012 or 2013. Yes, twelve or thirteen years ago.

Closed Froyo Shops

C Cup, 9566 Las Tunas Dr, opened in 2008 and closed in 2012. It was counter-serve and offered tart froyo, shaved ice, and smoothies. It was inspired by Pinkberry.

Still Open But No Longer Offers Froyo

Tutti Frutti, 9566 Las Tunas Dr, was a branch of the multi-national self-serve franchise. It was inside of Cloverleaf Bakery. Cloverleaf Bakery opened in 2009 with Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt inside. It was self-serve with four machines. Froyo was discontinued in 2011. Cloverleaf is still open.

Rose Donut & Sandwiches, 6276 Rosemead Blvd, added self-serve froyo in 2010 and kept it till 2013 (?). There were 8 flavors day.

Did I miss any froyo shops in Temple City? Let me know.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Kri Kri Greek Frozen Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Kri Kri, a Greek dairy company established in 1954, introduced its Greek frozen yogurt products to the United States in late 2024. The products come from Kri Kri’s production plant in Northern Greece and are made with 100% Greek dairy. Kri Kri starts with farm-fresh dairy to make its yogurt. The yogurt is strained and made into frozen yogurt. It contains live yogurt cultures.

I found Kri Kri’s Greek yogurt products at Bristol Farms in South Pasadena. The 15.2 fl oz tubs were $6.49 each ($7.99 regular price), and the bars (one box contains four bars) were $8.99, (regular price $10.99).

Plain Greek frozen yogurt: The froyo looked and smelled good, i.e., it smelled like yogurt. The texture was airy, making it easily scoopable. The texture was awful because of the grittiness. It was more than just a little gritty. It was the grittiest frozen yogurt that I’ve ever had. Flavor-wise, it tasted like yogurt but had too much sugar. There was some tang though.

One serving is 2/3 cup, 170 calories, 4.5g total fat, 29g total carbs, 26g total sugars, and 4g protein. The main ingredients are skim milk, Greek yogurt, sugar, and cream.

Kri Kri's fruit-flavored frozen yogurt is made with sour cherry, salted caramel, or honey syrup. The Greek frozen yogurt sticks (e.g., bars, popsicles) have a fruit coating and fruit ripple. The other flavors have even more sugar than the Plain Greek frozen yogurt.

Available pint flavors: Plain, Hazelnut, Peach, Sour Cherry

Available bar flavors: Strawberry, Peach, Cherry

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

SweetKiwi Smurf Berry Frozen Whipped Greek Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Sweetkiwi announced the Smurfs Greek froyo line last June. I never saw the Smurfs Sweetkiwi Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars or single serve cups, but I’ve spotted the 14 oz tubs recently at Vons, Gelson’s, and Ralph’s in the Los Angeles area. Vons was selling Sweetkiwi for $7.99 (regular price). The Smurfs packaging is adorable.

Smurf Berry flavor: Loved it! Before you take a scoop, I suggest you smell it first. The froyo smells so heavenly, like tangy yogurt and berries. Be sure to also admire the pretty smurf blue color of the froyo (thanks, butterfly pea flower powder). The froyo tasted like it smelled – like tangy yogurt and (rasp)berries. The yogurt melted in my mouth. It was easy to scoop. I liked the lightness of the whipped yogurt and the clean aftertaste. It’s not as creamy as a high fat ice cream, but the yogurt gives it a milkiness and tang. One serving is 2/3 cup, 110 calories, 0g fat, 12g total sugars, 17g total carbs, and 9g protein. The whole container is 280 calories and 22g of protein. The yogurt also has probiotics and superfoods too. Papa Smurf approved. I would buy it again.

Available flavors: Blue Cookie Crunch, Smurf Berry

Did you know that a new Smurfs movie is in the works?

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Still Has Partial Serve At Multiple Locations

Fro-yo girl here. Last February, I wrote about how some froyo shops in Los Angeles still had partial serve – that is, you could get your own froyo, but an employee would add your toppings. Yogurtland Eagle Rock and Yogurtland Burbank were partial serve locations. Both brought back full self-serve in mid-2024.

I was surprised to see that Yogurtland East Hollywood still has partial serve. Apparently, Yogurtland in Koreatown is also partial serve.

I’m still annoyed. The employee usually puts on too many toppings and taps the cup on the counter, messing up your nice swirl. If it’s a safety or theft issue, then make the entire store counter-serve.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Edible Closes in Pasadena, CA, What Happened to the Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. I visited Edible (formerly known as Edible Arrangements) in 2016 to try the new froyo fruit blends, which blended soft serve vanilla froyo with fresh fruit puree. It was truly terrible. It was the only time I visited the now closed Edible in Pasadena.

Interestingly, I found an article about Edible Arrangements where a former Edible franchisee said, “The worst product rollout he could recall was the launch of frozen yogurt treats, which he said came in 2016, along with a mandate that franchisees spend thousands of dollars on a specialized machine. “I think they rolled it out for maybe two months, and then they said, ‘We’re going to discontinue this. And so we’re like, ‘OK, well, is the manufacturer going to buy it back?’ They’re like, ‘No, but you could just sell it.’”

The company was sued by its franchisees in 2020. Accusations included “price-gouging franchisees, in part by requiring them to buy supplies from a series of companies that are all owned by Farid (the founder and CEO from 2018 - 2025).

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New May Flavors & Toppings at Menchie’s

Fro-yo girl here. It’s feeling like springtime at Menchie’s with the cute new Mookie lavender colored spoons, two brand new flavors, and a new topping.

Nerds Rainbow Candy sorbet: This new flavor was inspired by Nerds Gummy Clusters candy. I’ve never had Nerds gummy clusters, but I have had Nerds. The sorbet is a bright pinkish red hue, and it tastes like fruit punch. I wasn’t a fan, but I can imagine that kids would like it. Nerds Rainbow Candy sorbet is nonfat, gluten-free, and made with no high fructose corn syrup. Recommended toppings: Nerds gummy clusters

Peaches N Cream froyo: The new Peaches N Cream froyo is made with real peaches. The peach flavor was nice, and the froyo was smooth and creamy. The cream muted the peach flavor. It was good, mild enough to go with lots of froyo flavors and toppings. Recommended toppings: granola, almonds, and mango. Peaches N Cream froyo is lowfat, gluten-free, and contains no artificial colors, artificial flavors, or high fructose corn syrup.

The new topping, Nerds Gummy Clusters, is obviously the perfect topping for Nerds Rainbow Candy sorbet.

The new flavors are available for a limited time, while supplies last.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Kettl X August Ice Cream Bars at Kettl

Fro-yo girl here. Kettl, which started out importing teas from Japan, opened its first café outside of NY, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in February. Known for matcha, the Kettl menu includes tea lattes and cortados, traditional matcha, iced teas, and brewed teas. I also saw a sign by the register for Kettl X August “Ice Cream Bars” and was intrigued. The bars are exclusive to Kettl Los Feliz and created with Chef Malcolm Livingston, former head pastry chef at noma and wd~50 using Kettl’s tea. His goal was to create a non-dairy, gluten-free, non-nut based ice cream (tiger nut is not a nut, despite the name). The 90g bar was $14.

Sobacha bar: Loved the holographic wrapper. The bar was thick and had a ridge on top and crunchy bits on the light brown shell. Tiger nut milk must be mild. I mostly tasted the coconut cream vs. the tiger nut milk. The bar exterior had a roasted flavor. The ice cream portion was fairly creamy and mild with a clean aftertaste. Worth $14? I’m not sure but it was clearly high quality. You can only get the bars at Kettl Los Feliz.

The three flavors are matcha (sold out during my visit), houjicha, and sobacha (roasted buckwheat). I’ve never had roasted buckwheat ice cream before.

A sobacha bar is 220 calories, 16g total fat, 20g total carbs, 12g sugars, and 4g protein. The first ingredient is tiger nut water, followed by coconut cream, sweetened condensed coconut milk, cane sugar, plant butter, soba cha tea, etc.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Amazon Go Closes in Woodland Hills, A Visit to Amazon Go Whittier

Fro-yo girl here. It’s been almost a year since I visited Amazon Go (I don’t live near one). Turns out that the Amazon Go in Woodland Hills closed in late February after three years in business. Amazon Go in Torrance doesn’t offer self-serve froyo, so I headed to Amazon Go in Whittier.

The last time I was at Amazon Go, Whittier, I found out that they stopped carrying Pinkberry in late 2023 and switched to chocolate and vanilla frozen yogurt. I asked the employee what brand of froyo mix they use, but he didn’t know because someone else maintains the soft serve machine.

While the price of froyo has gone up everywhere, even at IKEA, Amazon Go still offers flat rate cups of froyo and toppings for $4.99 (the price hasn’t changed since it first opened). It’s a real froyo steal. The froyo wasn’t bad at all. The vanilla is on the bland side. The chocolate isn’t crazy sweet. The yogurt is thick and creamy. For toppings, they had sprinkles, Oreos, and chocolate chips. The toppings dispenser is very messy, so a lot of toppings are wasted.

Amazon Go had a lot of items on sale. It feels like it’s going out of business. I actually like it because they carry better brands, have kombucha and cold brew on top, and have froyo. The prepared foods are better than 7-Eleven’s, and you can even get fresh food that’s made to order and reasonably priced. I’m not the type of person who shops at convenience stores, but if I lived near a better convenience store with froyo, I could see myself visiting it more often.

Amazon peaked at about 30 convenience stores. Since the peak, they’ve closed about half of these stores.

* AMAZON GO: 14249 Whittier Blvd, Whittier, CA 90605

New Legen-dairy Froyo Mookie Spoons at Menchie’s

Fro-yo girl here. I have some good news for froyo spoon collectors. Menchie’s is about to release a new spoon. The new Mookie (cow) spoon says Legen-dairy Froyo on the spoon handle. The spoon is a pretty lilac hue. The back of the spoon shows the back of Mookie, and it says Menchie’s franchise opportunities.

The collectible spoon is available for a limited time, while supplies last. This is the second new Menchie’s spoon of 2025.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
