Kettl X August Ice Cream Bars at Kettl

Fro-yo girl here. Kettl, which started out importing teas from Japan, opened its first café outside of NY, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in February. Known for matcha, the Kettl menu includes tea lattes and cortados, traditional matcha, iced teas, and brewed teas. I also saw a sign by the register for Kettl X August “Ice Cream Bars” and was intrigued. The bars are exclusive to Kettl Los Feliz and created with Chef Malcolm Livingston, former head pastry chef at noma and wd~50 using Kettl’s tea. His goal was to create a non-dairy, gluten-free, non-nut based ice cream (tiger nut is not a nut, despite the name). The 90g bar was $14.

Sobacha bar: Loved the holographic wrapper. The bar was thick and had a ridge on top and crunchy bits on the light brown shell. Tiger nut milk must be mild. I mostly tasted the coconut cream vs. the tiger nut milk. The bar exterior had a roasted flavor. The ice cream portion was fairly creamy and mild with a clean aftertaste. Worth $14? I’m not sure but it was clearly high quality. You can only get the bars at Kettl Los Feliz.

The three flavors are matcha (sold out during my visit), houjicha, and sobacha (roasted buckwheat). I’ve never had roasted buckwheat ice cream before.

A sobacha bar is 220 calories, 16g total fat, 20g total carbs, 12g sugars, and 4g protein. The first ingredient is tiger nut water, followed by coconut cream, sweetened condensed coconut milk, cane sugar, plant butter, soba cha tea, etc.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
