2026 Pumpkin Yogurt Rankings

Fro-yo girl here. Happy National Pumpkin Month! It’s time for my annual pumpkin yogurt rankings. I bought these cups of pumpkin yogurt at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Sprouts. I tried these five yogurts side by side. They're all made with pumpkin puree.

The contenders:

• Ellenos Pumpkin Pie whole milk Greek yogurt with pie toppings in a separate compartment
• Icelandic Provisions Pumpkin Spice skyr
• Noosa Pumpkin yoghurt whole milk Australian-style yogurt
• Siggi’s Pumpkin & Spice lowfat skyr
• Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Greek nonfat yogurt

And the rankings are (in order of preference):

1. Ellenos Pumpkin Pie: Ellenos wins every year, because the yogurt tastes the most like pumpkin pie. It has the best pumpkin puree. The yogurt is velvety and tangy. The buttery crumbs put this yogurt over the top. It’s made with cream and eggs. It tastes decadent.
2. Icelandic Provisions Pumpkin Spice: this blended skyr was pleasantly spiced, sweet but not too sweet, and tangy. The warmth from maple syrup was very nice and they even added some butter. It’s a little thinner than Siggi’s and a little sweeter.
3. Siggi’s Pumpkin & Spice: I liked it because it wasn’t too sweet and had some sourness, but there isn’t much pumpkin or spice flavor. Siggi’s is made with skim milk and cream.
4. Noosa Pumpkin: this Australian-style yogurt is not blended and it tastes like cream cheese and honey. It is very sweet but does have tang. It didn’t have much pumpkin or spice flavor.
5. Trader Joe’s Pumpkin: the blended yogurt with smooth and sweet without much tang, it also lacks in pumpkin and spice flavors

I saw Chobani Pumpkin Spice Greek yogurt but only in packs of four. I did not see Culina or La Fermiere’s pumpkin yogurt for sale this year.

Eighteen Years of Fro-Yo Girl Speaks

1st visit to Yogurtland in El Monte

Fro-yo girl here. Yes, I’ve been blogging about frozen yogurt. When I started this blog, frozen yogurt was in the middle of its second wave, and I didn’t think that I’d still be writing about froyo all these years later. Froyo is resilient, and the third wave is happening right now.

The survivors of the first and second wave are still around too. Yogurtland (second wave) turns twenty this year, Yogen Fruz (first wave) celebrates 40 years, and TCBY (first wave) turns 45.

The pandemic was extremely difficult for self-serve froyo shops, but quite a few survived and now the scene has evolved. The new wave is characterized by Greek froyo, smaller cups, a return to counter-serve, and elevated toppings. I’ve definitely seen more froyo shops open. The froyo hot spots are South Florida and NYC. Los Angeles has seen more pop-ups, more shops, and other types of businesses that have added froyo (usually Greek froyo) this year.

In my 17th blogiversary post I mentioned trying five new froyo shops and trailers from January – October 2025. This year, that number is thirteen. It includes several pop-ups, a vending machine, three existing businesses that added froyo, and froyo shops.

I’ve collected thirteen new froyo spoons so far this year, compared to eight this time last year.

I visited the two froyo hot spots, NYC in February and Miami in April. It’s interesting how the scenes were different. Miami’s froyo shops were similar to MYKA: counter-serve, small shops, Greek froyo, elevated toppings. I appreciated the lower sugar emphasis. Meli was my favorite froyo shop in Miami. NYC’s froyo scene was more diverse, with Aussie-style self-serve shop Mimi’s, fancy Madison Fare, and Asian-style Yogurt Club. Culture is still my favorite froyo shop in NYC. MYKA opened in NYC after my visit, and it also opened in Boston and La Jolla, California.

Ice cream shops are also offering froyo in greater numbers. Salt & Straw introduced multiple froyo flavors, and Van Leeuwen has been adding froyo to new and existing scoop shops.

There hasn’t been a major froyo shop closing in California this year, so that’s really good news.

I also visited Pittsburgh, PA, so you’ll be hearing about the Pittsburgh froyo scene soon.

Chew Chewable Strawberry Cereal Yogurt Cup Review

 

Fro-yo girl here. I found Chew Chewable Strawberry Yogurt Cups at DuoDuo Snacks for $2.99 each. Each cup is 180g. The yogurt is imported from China. It’s actually shelf-stable. The yogurt is kept separate from the crunchy grain cereal and freeze-dried strawberries. It has different textures and flavors.

Chewable Strawberry Cereal Yogurt: The plain yogurt was thin, tangy, and sweet. The whole strawberries were chewy and tangy. The mixed grain cereal was crunchy and lightly sweet. Overall, the snack was better than I expected, but the toppings were better than the yogurt. I prefer tangy, thick yogurt to thin, sweet yogurt.

While the product is yogurt (fermented milk), I believe it does not have live and active cultures.

Froyo Scene in San Mateo, CA

Clear Optometry

Fro-yo girl here. San Mateo once had a lively frozen yogurt scene, with self-serve froyo, counter serve classics, and even a few unexpected places offering froyo on the side. Today, only four places in the city serve froyo — and just one of them is a true froyo shop.

Over the years, I found eleven places for froyo that once operated in San Mateo and later closed, plus one business (Clear Optometry) that stayed open but stopped serving froyo. Of the eleven closed shops, seven were counter‑serve, and five opened in 2009, the big year for froyo expansion in San Mateo. San Mateo made my froyo hot spots list of 2010.

The oldest froyo shop in the area, Yumi Yogurt, is still going strong. JJ’s Yogurt was also an older shop, though its exact opening year is unclear.

I also heard that Yogurtland plans to open in San Mateo, but I couldn't find any updates since the initial press release mentioning Yogurtland's expansion plans. If it does open, it will mark the return of self-serve froyo to San Mateo.

San Mateo is a prosperous, well educated Bay Area city with:
• Population: ~103K–105K
• Median age: ~38–39
• Median household income: ~$152K–$162K
• High housing costs, high educational attainment

It seems like a good place for froyo.

Places to Get Froyo

• Nick the Greek, 1324 W Hillsdale Blvd, opened in 2020. The Greek fast-casual chain offers Greek froyo.
• Nick the Greek, 213 3rd Ave, opened in downtown San Mateo in 2024
• Simple Delights, 1226 W Hillsdale Blvd, at the Laurelwood Shopping Center is a bakery that opened in 2020, taking over the JJ Yogurt space. Froyo is still available.
• Yumi Yogurt, 3955 S El Camino Real, San Mateo, opened in 1987; it serves froyo and ice cream.

Former Places to Get Froyo

• Happy Yogurt, 110 S B St, was a small self-serve froyo shop in downtown San Mateo that opened in 2009 and closed in 2011.
• Harmony Frozen Yogurt, 1051 Park Place, was an organic froyo shop that first opened in San Carlos. The San Mateo location, the second Harmony branch, opened in 2009.
• JJ’s Yogurt, 1226 W Hillsdale Blvd, was an old school, counter-serve froyo shop that closed in 2019 or 2020.
• Maquito Yogurt, 60 31st Ave, was a counter-serve froyo shop that opened at Hillsdale Shopping Center in 2009 and closed in 2013.
• Nubi Yogurt, 2015 Chess Dr, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2011 and closed in 2016.
• Quickly, 142 E 3rd Ave, was a boba shop in downtown San Mateo that was open from 2005 – 2019. They offered froyo from 2008 – 2012.
• Snowee Yogurt, 168 W 25th Ave, was a self-serve froyo shop that also served shaved ice and snacks. It opened in 2009 and closed in 2015.
• Teaway, 165 E. Fourth Ave., a sister brand of Tuttimelon, took over the Tuttimelon space in 2011 and still offered Tuttimelon froyo. It closed in 2013 and was replaced by Honeyberry, the roti bun shop. While some Honeyberry locations offered froyo, the one in San Mateo did not.
• Tuttimelon, 165 E. Fourth Ave., was a froyo shop that opened in 2009 in downtown San Mateo. It turned into their sister brand, Teaway, in 2011.
• Yogurtouille, 407 S B St, was a small, bright, self-serve froyo shop that opened in downtown San Mateo in 2008 and closed in 2015 or 2016.
• Yumi Yogurt, 60 31st Ave, opened a small shop inside Hillsdale Shopping Center in 2013 and closed in 2017.

Still Open, Stopped Serving Froyo

• Clear Optometry, 138 E 3rd St., is a luxury eyewear store. It used to have a dessert bar with froyo and housemade mochi in many flavors. They started offering froyo in 2007 and stopped offering it around 2016.

The only places I haven’t been to are the Nick the Greek branches and Simply Delights. The places I miss the most are Harmony, Clear Optometry, and Tuttimelon.

Last Days of the National (US) Frozen Yogurt Consumer Survey, Survey Closes on October 14

Coven Academy Pop-Up at Olive & James/ Frankie Greek Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. Disney’s Coven Academy just took over Olive & James and Frankie Greek Yogurt on Melrose with a magic-themed pop-up. The event took place on September 30 – October 7. The stars of the show appeared in person to make matcha drinks and froyo. The interior and exterior were transformed into a dark, magical place resembling the grounds of the Coven Academy.

The first 50 guests each day received a complimentary co-branded matcha drink. There was free froyo too. The first 50 guests on Saturday and Sunday received complimentary co-branded froyo. There were lots of giveaways, including charm bracelets, sweatshirts, stickers, socks, photo booth photos, and much more. This was a great pop-up

The matcha drinks and froyo were named after Briar, Sasha, and Tegan. They were served in Coven Academy cups.

• Briar – Awakening froyo: Original Greek froyo, blueberry sauce, edible gold flakes
• Sasha – Mind reader froyo: Original Greek froyo, pink strawberry sauce, pink decorating sugar
• Tegan – Time bender: Original Greek froyo, green pistachio sauce, decorating sugar

National Spoon Day at Yogurtland, Cappuccino Spoon Drop

Fro-yo girl here. Happy National Spoon Day! I had it marked on my calendar, because Yogurtland has been dropping giant spoons on National Spoon Day since 2020. This year’s National Spoon Day giant Yogurtland spoon is special, because it celebrates Yogurtland’s 20thanniversary.

The free Cappuccino Yogurtland giant spoon is a gift with every minimum $15 in‑store purchase, while supplies last. There’s a maximum of two spoons per transaction.

The spoon 12 inches long, with Yogurtland printed on the handle. The design commemorates Yogurtland’s 20th anniversary. On the back of the spoon, it says 20 Years of Love, Joy & Hope.

The previous National Spoon Day giant Yogurtland spoons were: pink and green (2020), raspberry (2021), turquoise (2022), dark blue (2023), apricot (2024), and midnight plum (2025).

The giant spoons are available while supplies last. My Yogurtland had three boxes of spoons. The avid spoon collectors were there early, but there should be plenty for a few hours.

Erewhon Fall In Love (Pumpkin Spice) Smoothie

Fro-yo girl here. I missed out on Erewhon’s Fall In Love Smoothie when it was introduced last October, but it’s back again and available only in October.

The Fall In Love smoothie is made with Lifeway Organic Lowfat Plain Kefir, smooth cold brew, organic pumpkin purée, dates, banana, and warm pumpkin spice seasoning, topped with a dairy cold foam and cinnamon.” I had it without banana.

The smoothie had very strong spice levels (cinnamon, nutmeg) and was slightly tangy. The cream top was lightly sweetened. It was icier than I expected (probably because I didn’t want any banana). I could not taste the cold brew. A small smoothie was $11. I wish the cold brew coffee flavor were stronger. Also, the spices were a bit too strong.

The Fall In Love smoothie is available at all Erewhon locations until the end of June. It’s free for members till October 14.

Menchie’s October Promotions

Menchie’s is celebrating spooky season with a Ghostbusters promotion, featuring two limited-time froyo flavors, Stay Puft Toasted Marshmallow froyo and Ghostbusters Sugar Cookie froyo. There’s also a special topping, Ghostbusters Marshmallow Sauce. Look for the special Ghostbusters signs around Menchie’s.

And of course, Harvest Pumpkin froyo is a featured flavor again. After all, October is National Pumpkin Month.

Coconut Cult Froyo Tour Just Started

Fro-yo girl here. This is big news. The Coconut Cult Froyo Tour is bringing probiotic vegan froyo across the country. The first dates and locations dropped yesterday.

The first stop of the tour was in Westwood Village today, NEAR but not at UCLA (the tour said the truck would be at UCLA). If you’re doing a froyo tour, please provide exact addresses. UCLA is a huge campus, and the truck was not parked on campus. Westwood Village is south of UCLA.

The froyo van had three soft serve machines (Electro Freeze) but one machine wasn’t being used. There were four froyo flavors, though they ran out of Banana Cream Pie. Each flavor had a specially designed cup. Complimentary froyo mini cups were provided from 12 PM – 4 PM.

Flavors:

• Key lime pie: the texture was looser and gritty/grainy, but the flavor was tangy and strong. It did taste like key lime but also coconut. The coconut flavor is very strong too.
• Banana cream pie: not available
• Wild passion fruit: the texture was much smoother and creamier than the key lime pie; I just prefer key lime pie to passion fruit, but it did taste like passion fruit and coconut and it was plenty tangy.
• Chocolate mousse: didn't try

I learned that they do tone down their regular yogurt in order to create the soft serve. The regular yogurt has very strong flavors and is extremely rich. I was also told that they wanted to collect feedback on their flavors and see how people respond to the froyo. The froyo is not available at any national retailer.

Nudes Soft Opening in Beverly Grove

Fro yo girl here. Nudes Yogurt officially opened yesterday, October 1, so of course I had to stop by during their soft opening. They started with three froyo flavors, but vegan coconut was already gone when I arrived—just 20 minutes after opening—so the choices were original tart Greek yogurt and chocolate yogurt (not tart). Ask for samples before you commit. They were friendly and generous with samples.

Prices: 

• Small (really a mini) + 2 toppings: $9 
• Medium (felt like a small) + 2 toppings: $11 
• Large + 3 toppings: $13 
• Extra toppings: $1.50 each

The toppings weren’t labeled, but they looked beautiful and leaned healthier: olive oil, honey, Tajin, zaatar, fresh fruit, sauces, baklava, dried fruit, halva, pistachio kataifi, dates, coconut, and more.

As for the froyo, it’s good but not great. I liked the sour note and appreciated that it wasn’t overly sweet. The texture, though, needs work. It was smooth but not thick, melted quickly, and didn’t have the creamy richness you expect from Greek yogurt froyo. Honestly, it tasted more like a regular plain tart froyo than a true Greek yogurt version.

Toppings were fine overall. The pistachio was more like dust—I prefer bigger pieces—but the fresh peaches were lovely.

The minimalist cups and store design are lovely. They’re open 4 PM – 9 PM during the soft opening, and the grand opening is expected on October 8. Follow them on IG @nudesyogurt for updates.

Good luck finding parking in the area. The residential areas are permit only parking.

Froyo Scene in Glendora, CA

Fro-yo girl here. Glendora is a smaller city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The population was 50,101 in 2024. The median household income is $118,008. Route 66 runs through the city. It is also the home of Donut Man, Rubel Castle, and Big Tree Park.

Sadly, while Glendora used to have four froyo shops, there is currently no froyo shop in town. Golden Spoon was the oldest froyo shop and the last to close. It actually closed, remodeled, and reopened. The froyo shops represented different styles of froyo: counter-serve/traditional, mix-in style, and self-serve.

CLOSED FROYO SHOPS

• Coolberry, 153 W Rt 66, opened in 2015 and closed in 2017. It was a self-serve froyo shop.
• Berries…A Mix Gallery… Frozen Yogurt, 1820 E Rte 66, was a froyo shop that opened in the Lone Hill Shopping Center in 2012 and closed in 2017. The froyo was mixed to order on a cold marble slab like 21 Choices and Cold Stone Creamery. The first location was in Rancho Cucamonga.
• Golden Spoon, 1365 E Gladstone St., Ste. 100, opened in 2008 and closed in 2017.
• Golden Spoon, 1365 E Gladstone St., Ste. 100, reopened under new ownership in 2018 and closed in 2019
• Kool n’ Frooti, 1311 S Grand Ave #170, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2012 and closed in 2014.

New Final Boss Sour Punch Out Peach Topping, Happy Hour, Seasonal Flavors at Yogurtland

Fro-yo girl here. Today was the first day of Yogurtland’s first national happy hour, which continues through October 1. From 3 PM – 7 PM, Yogurtland guests can enjoy $3 off a minimum $6 purchase (the offer is good in-store, online, and with delivery orders).

They also launched a new topping with Final Boss Sour, a sour candy brand. The new topping, Punch Out Peach is made with real dried peaches, no artificial colors, and no artificial fruit flavors. The peach strips are firm, chewy, and very sour. They were great with plain tart.

Punch Out Peach is available at Yogurtland locations nationwide for a limited time. I’ve never heard of Final Boss Sour, but I enjoyed trying a new chewy, sour topping.

I also spotted a few seasonal flavors, including Raspberry Pomegranate Tart and Butter Pecan Gelato.

Yogurtland El Monte Grand Opening Details

Fro-yo girl here. The Yogurtland grand opening celebration is this Saturday, September 26. Here are the details:

• 11:00 AM: Official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
• 11:30 AM: Special giveaway where the first 50 guests receive a free 8-ounce yogurt.
• 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM: BOGO special (Buy One Cup, Get a 2nd cup free of equal or lesser value, weighed items and in-store only).
• 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Face painter and balloon artist for attendees.
• 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Giveaways for guests who spend $15 or more, while supplies last.

I can’t make it, but I’m sending my froyo blessings to Yogurtland El Monte/Santa Fe Trail. I recommend getting the Pumpkin Pie froyo with whipped cream, graham crackers, and roasted almonds.

Aji Wire Drawing Cookies in Strawberry Yogurt Review

 

Fro-yo girl here. DuoDuo Snacks recently opened in Temple City, and their selection of Asian snacks is impressive. I spotted Aji Wire Drawing Cookies in the cookie aisle. They are strawberry yogurt flavored. They look like chocolate chip cookies with a chewy mochi center. A 100g box comes with five individually wrapped mini cookies. It was priced at $3.59. The cookies are imported from China.

Strawberry Yogurt Cookie: The cookie is a pretty pink color and smells faintly fruity. The chocolate chips are placed on top. The cookie is soft and has a chewy clear mochi center. It was mild in flavor and not that sweet. Even the chocolate chips didn’t have much flavor. The cookie was faintly fruity but didn’t have any yogurt flavor. There was supposed to be a strawberry yogurt-flavored sauce, but I’m not sure where it was. It was a pleasant cookie, but the appeal is mostly in the appearance and texture, not the flavor. I would eat it again but not on a regular basis.

One serving (1 pack) is 430 calories with 17g total fat, 65g carbs, 12g sugar, and 4g protein.

The Aji Strawberry Yogurt Wire Drawing Cookies come in a 100g package and are known for their delicious mochi-filled texture. They are soft and crumbly, making them a delightful treat.

Aniimo’s Froyo Truck Pop-Up in Downtown Los Angeles

Fro-yo girl here. Aniimoi s a new creature-catching game that just launched. To celebrate the global launch of Aniimoi, the Aniimo froyo truck visited Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles on September 16 – 17. Guests enjoyed a free mini cup of White Vanilla Aniimazing frozen yogurt. The yogurt was pale blue in color but tasted like a very sweet vanilla. It was adorned with a custom wafer with the Aniimo image.

They were also handing out postcards with codes for a special gift (to be redeemed in-game).

Van Leeuwen’s New Flavors: Pumpkin Spice and Vanilla

Fro-yo girl here. It looks like Van Leeuwen is planning a monthly flavor drop at their froyo-serving scoop shops. This month, there are two new flavors: Pumpkin Spice and Vanilla froyo. Neither are tart.

Vanilla froyo: I was surprised to find that it had a icier texture. It did not taste like frozen yogurt but it did taste like vanilla. Recommended toppings: any crumble, any sauce

Pumpkin spice froyo: Definitely creamier in texture than the vanilla froyo, the pumpkin spice froyo tasted like pumpkin ice cream. The texture was off though – there were some large ice crystals. It also melted fast. Recommended toppings: speculoos cookie crumble, honey slivered almonds, whipped cream.

Frozen Labneh from Milk Cult at Café Tropical

Fro-yo girl here. One of the (new) owners of Café Tropical also founded Milk Cult ice cream in Washington DC. It looks like they started serving soft serve earlier this year. They usually offer one sorbet and one dairy flavor.

I was excited to see that they launched a labneh soft serve, but then I had to question whether labneh soft serve is froyo. Labneh is strained yogurt. It’s called labneh in the Middle East. Labneh is usually strained for a longer period than Greek yogurt, so more of the whey is removed.

However, according to the picture that Café Tropical posted, they used Byblos Lebni, which is a kefir-based labneh (and different from labneh made with yogurt).

Anyway, the labneh soft serve was quite tart (they added malic acid to boost the tartness) and very creamy. It was looser (more air), softer, and not as smooth as an ideal froyo but the flavor was very tasty.

Café Tropical currently doesn’t offer toppings. A mini cup or cone is $5.
