New Passion Fruit Froyo at Van Leeuwen

Fro-yo girl here. Van Leeuwen just dropped a new froyo flavor, Passion Fruit, at all Van Leeuwen locations with froyo (i.e., 14 VL scoop shops). It’s a tart-based froyo made with organic A2 Bulgarian yogurt and passion fruit puree.

Passion fruit froyo: The froyo was creamy and soft in texture. The flavor was punchy and very tangy. It definitely tasted like passion fruit and yogurt (even with a slightly fermented flavor). It also was quite sweet. I don’t love passion fruit, but I don’t hate it either. When it comes to passion fruit froyo, I prefer passion fruit combined with another fruit flavor. Recommended toppings: toasted coconut, honey slivered almonds, passion fruit sauce or raspberry puree.

Normal Ice Cream Soft Serve Pop-up

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve seen Normal Ice Cream pints in stores and walked by the brick & mortar shop in Salt Lake City (it’s on the same street as Yagoot), but I haven’t tried it yet. When I saw that they had a soft serve pop-up in Atwater Village, I stopped by. The LA pop-ups have been going on for over a year, and the next one takes place on August 30 at Gjusta Grocer in Venice, CA, from 1 PM – 4 PM.

The bright yellow cart was set up outside of Wine & Eggs. There was one soft serve flavor, salted vanilla bean, available in a cup or cone ($6), with the option of adding a dark chocolate or almond butter dip ($3), and fancy toppings (pretzel shortbread, lemon curd, raspberry jam, chocolate chip cookie, raspberry powder).

The soft serve was soft, silky, and very creamy. The flavor was so mild though. It tasted like milk soft serve. I couldn’t taste vanilla or salt. The pretzel shortbread added a nice crunch, but it tasted like regular shortbread. I could not taste the pretzel. The lemon curd didn’t have much tang. The flavors were muted, but the ingredients were high quality.

I wish I had visited when they offered a more interesting flavor than vanilla.

New Pinkberry Froyo Flavor, Midnight Margarita & Practical Magic 2 Sweepstakes

Fro-yo girl here. Pinkberry just launched a flavor inspired by the movie, Practical Magic 2. In Practical Magic, the main witches make margaritas at midnight. Some fans add a witchy twist by adding blackberries.

Pinkberry’s Midnight Margarita froyo blends blackberries and limes (and I think a sweet and sour mix?). It tastes more like lime than blackberries, but it also tastes like something other than blackberries, lime, and froyo. I liked how it was sour and tangy. It’s not the most natural tasting, but I still enjoyed the very lime-forward, sweet/sour froyo. Pinkberry recommends adding fresh blackberries, black salt, purple sugar, and a lime slice.

They had Practical Magic 2 cups. There’s also a Midnight Margarita refresher.

Yogurtland Opens in El Monte’s Santa Fe Trail Plaza

Fro-yo girl here. Good news. Yogurtland just opened this week in El Monte, CA, at Santa Fe Trail Plaza. It took over the old Menchie’s space. The Menchie’s owner wanted to retire, hence Menchie’s was replaced by Yogurtland.

I was afraid that they would keep the old Menchie's machines and do a quick renovation, but fortunately, they did a full renovation, building a new wall for the froyo machines and a new toppings bar. Also, the soft serve machines are new, and they’re working very well. The texture of the froyo is better than at most Yogurtland locations. There are 16 flavors a day and the usual Yogurtland toppings and sauces. It’s $0.81/oz.

Root beer float froyo is the current seasonal flavor.

I heard that the owner of Yogurtland Santa Fe Trail also owns the Yogurtland in Walnut. No date has been set for the grand opening.

Want Want QQ Kitty Paw Gummy Yogurt Candy Review

 

Fro-yo girl here. Weee! is currently selling Want Want QQ Kitty Paw Gummy candy for $1.79 each. One pouch is 45g. The paws are yogurt-flavored gummies imported from China.

Each pouch is resealable. One serving (1 packet) is 145 calories. Each paw has two layers, a bottom white layer and a fruity top layer. The candy is squishy but very firm. The white yogurt- flavored layer is a bit spongier and sweeter. The yogurt flavor tastes like Yakult.

Available flavors: grape yogurt, orange yogurt, strawberry yogurt

• Strawberry yogurt: similarly sweet, firm, and chewy with mild artificial strawberry flavor
• Grape yogurt: very sweet, very firm yet chewy, hint of fake grape flavor
• Orange yogurt: the yogurt flavor seems stronger, but that’s not a good thing. The orange flavor is very faint.

It’s candy, so I can understand why the flavors are artificial, but the flavor is too sweet with little tang, and the candy is too firm. The strawberry was my favorite flavor.

Revisiting Coconut Cult in 2026

 

Fro-yo girl here. I first tried and reviewed Coconut Cult in 2022. I tried the Original Coconut Yogurt and found the texture to be grainy and the fermented flavor was very strong. The ingredients were simple: coconuts and probiotics.

Recently, I noticed that Target started carrying Coconut Cult mini 4 oz cups. The packaging looked appealing. There is 200 billion CFU per cup and 16 live probiotic strains. The cups are $3.99 each.

Coconut Cult minis are made with the same live fermented coconut yogurt as the larger 8 fl oz and 16 fl oz jars. The yogurt is organic and contains no gums, fillers, or preservatives.

One thing to note is that the minis are small, smaller than your typical cup of yogurt, and each cup contains two servings. One serving is a mere 2 oz. 

Available flavors:

• Apple cinnamon roll
• Cookies & cream
• Banana cream pie
• Organic berry basket: very intense berry flavor but also intense coconut flavor, it’s super rich, super thick, and super tangy. The yogurt is made with freeze-dried raspberries and blueberries. One 2 oz serving is 160 calories, 12g total fat, 8g total carbs, 6g total sugars, and 2g protein.
• Lemon meringue: thick, rich, super tangy, also pretty sweet, strong coconut and lemon flavors. One 2 oz serving is 100 calories, 8g total fat, 7g total carbs, 5g total sugars, and 2g protein. It's not as thick as berry basket though.

I’m glad I gave Coconut Cult another try. The yogurt is super flavorful, thick, and rich, thanks to the coconut cream and the fermentation.

626 Night Market 2026: Asian Food Trends

Fro-yo girl here. Froyo is back but there wasn’t any at 626 Night Market this year. I did get some frozen yogurt skewers last year from MOJO, but MOJO wasn’t there this year. 626 Night Market seemed much better before the pandemic. It felt like there were more Korean vendors than ever this year and fewer Chinese vendors. Only one place offers stinky tofu now. In the good old days, you could smell a lot of stinky tofu.

For desserts, I spotted taiyaki, taiyaki ice cream, Italian ice, Hawaiian honey cones, funnel cakes, shaved ice, ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, churros, crème brulee, cinnamon rolls, mango sticky rice, cheesecake on a stick, and banana pudding.

I didn’t see any food trucks, and the vendors that I went to last year weren’t there. But there were new vendors, more seating, and misting stations. It felt less exciting and novel though. Sushi tacos and sushi pizza might have been new.

I did try the Japanese sandwich pop-up, Sandoitchi, but it was disappointing since they didn’t use milk bread, and they didn’t cut all the crusts off my $15 egg salad sando.

Free parking. Admission is $8. They used to always have the last market of the year during Labor Day weekend, but this year they only had the market in June and August. Foodieland acquired 626 Night Market last year.

The food is better at Smorgasburg, which has free parking and free admission, but it’s not open at night. I also think Wat Thai Temple in North Hollywood has better, more affordable food, but it’s mostly Thai and not open at night. It’s hard to find a regular night market, though there is a new one in Hollywood.

Menchie’s Creamy Rootbeer Float & Café Gelato

 

Fro-yo girl here. Menchie’s is featuring two new flavors this month, Creamy Roobeer Float froyo and Café Gelato with live and active cultures. 

Creamy Root Beer Float froyo was inspired by National Root Beer Float Day, celebrated annually on August 6. It blends the nostalgic flavors of root beer and creamy vanilla ice cream. It’s made with no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup. I could definitely taste the root beer spices, but the flavor was mild enough to pair well with other flavors like vanilla. Recommended toppings: Hershey’s mini Kisses, Cool Whip.

The new Gourmet Café Gelato is creamy and has live and active cultures. Menchie’s describes it as, “the perfect harmony between bold, roasted coffee notes and a luxurious, sweet, creamy finish.” It wasn’t as creamy as I expected but the coffee flavor was still nice. Recommended toppings: almonds, chocolate shell.

Haitai Pollapo Yogurt Flavored Ice Tube Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been seeing Haitai Pollapo at various Asian markets lately. Pollapo is a yogurt-flavored ice tube imported from South Korea. One bag contains five frozen dessert tubes. Each individually wrapped tube is 120 mL. H Mart is selling Pollapo for $4.99/bag.

Pollapo Yogurt: It’s supposed to be cool and refreshing. The tube was solid and very firm. To consume, you peel off the top and push the bottom up (like a push-up pop). It tastes like what you’d imagine frozen Yakult to taste like. It was super sweet and very icy. I could not finish more than one bite.

One tube is 80 calories with 0g fat, 20g total carbs, 13g total sugars, and 0g protein. The main ingredients are water and corn syrup.

I can’t think of anything positive to say about Pollapo. The yogurt flavor was introduced in November 2025.

A Visit to Froyo & Fido in Simi Valley

Fro-yo girl here. It took me a few months, but I finally visited the new Froyo & Fido in Simi Valley. It’s a self-serve froyo shop that sells dog accessories, bagged candy, and canned beverages.

The shop was clean and cheerful. I like how you can find the flavors of the day on their website, as well as nutritional information. Service was better than average.

There are eight self-serve froyo flavors a day and a well-stocked toppings bar. It’s $0.79/ounce. Sample cups are available.

Froyo flavors:

• Jolly rancher
• Tart: rather bland, mild tartness
• Strawberry
• Cotton candy
• French vanilla
• Cake batter
• Chocolate
• Peanut butter cup: creamy, not too chocolatey

The yogurt is good but it’s not special. I think Yogurtland has better flavors. Froyo & Fido feels more relaxed and personal though. You can pick up a cup of froyo for your dog, a dog treat, and dog bandana here. Every other Thursday, 20% of froyo sales will go to the Community Pet Fund to help local families with vet bills.

Froyo Shops in Reno, Nevada

Fro-yo girl here. While Lake Tahoe doesn’t have many froyo shops, Reno is large enough to support multiple froyo shops. Reno has a population of 274,900, while the Reno metropolitan area is home to 575,000 residents. Reno is approximately 50 minutes from Lake Tahoe and seven hours from Las Vegas.

TCBY or Honey Treat was likely the first froyo shop in Reno. Honey Treat opened in 1982, I think, but I also saw a post from Honey Treat saying that it had been in Reno since the 1970s. If that's true, Honey Treat was the first froyo shop in Reno. However, I'm not so sure that Honey Treat has been around for quite that long.

In 2010, U-Swirl became the first self-serve froyo shop in Reno. Another self-serve shop, Yogurt Beach, soon followed. Today, Yogurt Beach is the clear leader in the area, with five branches. Yogurt Beach is a family-owned business established in Reno, Nevada in 2010. It has expanded to include locations outside of Nevada.

I found eight places to get froyo in Reno: five Yogurt Beach shops, 2 Nick the Greek branches, and one Honey Treat Yogurt. Another Nick the Greek is expected to open soon at 13987 S Virginia St., Reno.

I found 12 closed froyo shops, including three SweetFrog branches and three U-Swirl branches. Costco used to serve froyo at the snack bar.

Current Places to Get Froyo

• Honey Treat Yogurt, 299 E Plumb Ln Suite 180b, opened inside the Reno Public Market in 2025. It is counter-serve.
• Nick The Greek, 5140 Kietzke Ln, opened in 2023. It is a fast-casual Greek cafe that offers Greek frozen yogurt.
• Nick the Greek, 10310 N McCarran Blvd #400, opened at the Canyon Center in April 2026.
• Yogurt Beach, 3882 Mayberry Dr B, opened at Mayberry Landing in 2011.
• Yogurt Beach, 748 S Meadows Pkwy, Suite A-5, opened in 2011.
• Yogurt Beach, 440 E Golden Valley Rd, opened in 2017.

Froyo Shops In Lake Tahoe

Fro-yo girl here. The Lake Tahoe Basin has a population of approximately 60,000 residents, with 70% living in California and 30% in Nevada. The largest city in the area is South Lake Tahoe, which has roughly 21,300 residents and no dedicated froyo shops. The area has many small towns including Tahoe City, Incline Village, Olympic Valley, and Kings Beach. Truckee is technically not in the Lake Tahoe Basin rim but is about 15 - 20 miles away.

The area receives 2 to 3 million unique visitors a year. The busiest season is the summer, followed by the winter. The area includes 11 ski resorts.

The froyo options are few and far between, but the existing shops have survived for years. Also, all these shops are independently owned and not part of a franchise. I found six places to get froyo and two closed froyo shops. The oldest was Susie Scoops in Incline Village. The newest shop was Rainbow Sprinkles, which opened in 2017 and closed in 2018.

Current Places to Get Froyo

• Euro Sweets, 3001 N Village Dr, Truckee, CA, may have opened in 2012. It offers self-serve froyo, gelato, and candy.
• Euro Sweets, 1850 Village South Rd, Olympic Valley, CA, opened in 2015 at The Village at Palisades Tahoe.
• Poppy’s, 521 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA, opened in 2011 and serves froyo, ice cream, and espresso drinks. It is a window with outdoor seating only and two froyo flavors a day. 
• Summit Swirl, 11325 Deerfield Dr, Truckee, CA, opened in 2015. It is self-serve, with eight flavors a day. Summit Swirl seems to be the best froyo option in the area.
• Susie Scoops, 899 Tahoe Blvd, Incline Village, NV, offers ice cream, soft serve froyo, smoothies, and more. Susie Scoops opened in Incline Village in 2008.
• Sweet Tahoe Time, 8636 N Lake Blvd, Kings Beach, CA, opened in 2016. It is primarily a hard scoop ice cream shop, but does offer chocolate and vanilla soft serve froyo.

Closed Froyo Shops

• Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt, 1036 Emerald Bay Rd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, opened in 2017 and closed in 2018. It offered donuts and self-serve froyo.
• Sno Frozen Yogurt Café, 4125 Lake Tahoe Blvd, Ste I, South Lake Tahoe, CA, opened in 2015. The self-serve froyo shop offered 12 flavors of froyo, over 50 toppings, and coffee, hot chocolate, and tea. It closed in 2016.

Froyo Scene in Gilroy, CA

 

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland announced plans to open a branch in Gilroy, CA, so the froyo scene is finally going to get a major upgrade. There are currently three self-serve froyo shops in Gilroy: Top A Lot, Yogofino, and Yotealicious. Four froyo shops have closed, although one was just renamed and one was a Greek café that happened to serve Greek froyo. Fro-yo Delite became Fro-Yo Fever, which closed in 2018. Fro-yo Delite was the first froyo shop to open in Gilroy in 2010. Yogofino and Yotealicious (formerly known as YoghArt) were established in 2013 and 2012.

Gilroy, known as the Garlic Capital of the World, has a population of 59,000 and is located in southern Santa Clara County. The median household income was $133,107 in 2024, higher than the national average. Gilroy is known for the Gilroy Garlic Festival and Gilroy Premium Outlets.

Places to Get Froyo

• Top A Lot, 8155 Arroyo Cir 8003 Suite #3, is a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2024 at the Gilroy Premium Outlets. The original Top A Lot opened in Santa Cruz, CA, in 2008.
• Yogofino, 745 1st St, is a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2013. The logo looks like Yogofina’s, but it’s spelled differently.
• Yotealicious, 1230 1st St, Suite #105, is a self-serve froyo shop with bubble tea, smoothies, and snacks. It took over the YoghArt space.

Closed Places to Get Froyo

• Fro-Yo Fever, 6955 Camino Arroyo Ste 40, replaced Fro-yo Delite and closed in 2018
• Fro-yo Delite, 6955 Camino Arroyo Ste 40, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2010. The name was changed to Fro-Yo Fever, possibly in 2015.
• Nick the Greek, 739 1st St, was a fast casual Greek restaurant that served Greek froyo. The Gilroy branch opened in 2021 and closed in 2024.
• YoghArt, 1230 1st St, Suite #105, was a self-serve shop that opened in 2012. The ownership changed in March 2013. The name was changed to Yotealicious in 2018.

Skittles Yogurt Fruity Animal Gummies Review

Fro-yo girl here. I spotted Skittles Yogurt Fruit Animal Gummies at World Market. One pouch is 50g and was priced at $5.29. The gummies are imported from China. They’re made with real juice. The pouch is resealable. One pouch is 180 calories.

Each pouch comes with five different shapes and flavors. I think they’re all supposed to be animal-shaped, but I can’t tell what the round green shape is supposed to be. The gummies are very soft. I was hoping for something chewier.

• Strawberry (cat-face): mild berry and yogurt flavor, sweet, soft texture; the strawberry flavor was faint
• Original (paw-shaped) a little firmer, moist like a peelable gummy, sweet Yakult flavor
• Peach (pig-shaped): probably the best tasting, like sweet peaches mixed with Yakult, soft, moist
• Mango (fish-shaped) tastes like mango, very soft, little chew, moist, sweet
• Lemon (smiley-face) tastes medicinal and unpleasant, like a lemon cleaning product

The texture just didn’t do it for me. I also did not enjoy the flavors. The lemon was the worst. 

These gummies taste nothing like Skittles. The different colors and flavors fit with the taste the rainbow Skittles slogan though.

Yoga-urt Glendale Turns 11

Fro-yo girl here. Congrats to Yoga-urt on eleven years. I can vouch for the fact that Yoga-urt is just as good as it was on day one, only now there are many more flavors to choose from. In fact, today marked the launch of the newest flavor, Almond Joy. Almond Joy is a chocolate coconut almond flavor that is plant-based, organic, hand-crafted, all-natural and full of goodness (including live and active cultures).

Chocolate Bliss is Yoga-urt’s most popular flavor, and I’m sure that Almond Joy will delight chocolate froyo fans. I’m not a chocolate froyo fan, but I could taste the quality of ingredients, including the chocolate and coconut. It was rich, creamy, and thick. Recommended toppings: almonds and magic shell.

Smorgasburg Ice Cream Alley 2026 Report

 

Fro-yo girl here. Happy National Ice Cream Day! Ice Cream Alley is back at Smorgasburg Los Angeles on Sundays from now through September 6. The lineup of vendors changes every year, though it’s definitely smaller than it used to be.

This year’s line-up:

• Moom Maam: Artisanal Thai gelato, including mango sticky rice
• Sad Girl Creamery: Latin-inspired ice cream sundaes, ice cream tacos, ice cream scoops
• Bernie’s: shaved granita ice with toasted meringue
• Boutcha: tea-infused gelato
• Swrlies: real fruit ice cream and froyo, blended to order. YES, froyo is back at Smorgasburg.
• Sweet Lady Jane: I thought it was just cupcakes, but they have a new gelato

Smorgasburg is celebrating National Ice Cream Day with The Great Ice Cream Fair on July 19.

The event is free. Parking is also free. Smorgasburg LA is open from 10 AM – 4 PM.

Free Froyo Event for Descendants: Wicked Wonderland at Menchie’s

 

Fro-yo girl here. Thanks to Disney+, Descendants: Wicked Wonderalnd, and Menchie’s for today’s free froyo event. I went to Menchie’s in Burbank, CA, for the event, because I know that they’re always organized. One employee handed out 50 slips of paper to the first fifty guests. It was a hot day, and people were lined up well before 3 PM. The first five ounces were free.

They had the new red and blue Menchie’s spoons too.

Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is now streaming. It’s a teen fantasy series.

Ice Factory Strawberry Sorbet Ice Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. While China first popularized ice bars in cute shapes, the trend spread to South Korea. Ice Factory launched a line of fruit-shaped ice bars that claim to be

the first disposable mold packaged ice cream). The bars are individually wrapped. I spotted watermelon, peach, mango, blue lemonade, and strawberry sorbet bars at H Mart in Arcadia. The bars are $3.99 each.

Strawberry sorbet bar: The bar is 67 ml or 2.27 fl. oz. It comes in a plastic mold. You remove the bar and put together the paper holder. It’s made with strawberries and contains strawberry seeds. One bar is 74 calories, 1g total fat, 16g total sugars, and 0g protein. The bar was hard (like a block of ice). I liked the flavor – it tasted like strawberry lemonade. It was tart and sweet. Once it started melting, it did get messy. It’s not as good as the bars you can get at TJ’s because it’s too hard, but it is cuter.

Go Greek Opens in Brentwood, Los Angeles

 

Fro-yo girl here. Go Greek is in expansion mode again and is now open in Brentwood, my old Westside neighborhood. It is modeled after a classic yogurteria that you'd find in Greece, serving classic yogurt and frozen yogurt. The mostly white shop with blue accents also looks like something you’d see in Greece.

During my visit, they had Kiehl’s bowls to promote the Kiehl’s collab. The Kiehl’s Better Summer Swirl bowl is banana froyo with pineapple, Greek cookie crumbs, toasted coconut, and cacao drizzle. I didn’t see most of those toppings. You must have to ask for them.

The Greek froyo is self-serve with six flavors a day (though during my visit, the strawberry wasn't available) and healthier toppings for $1.35/oz. Toppings include fresh fruit (more varieties than usual), cookies, dates, mochi, cacao nibs, chocolate chips, yogurt pretzels, nuts, granola, etc.

The menu also includes classic (non-frozen) Greek yogurt that's imported from Greece, sweet and savory Greek yogurt bowls, and smoothies made with Greek froyo.

Some of the toppings cost extra, including the Greek spoon sweets, honey, shaved chocolate, toasted coconut, hemp seeds, and even peanut butter. It seems stingy to me when the yogurt is almost twice as expensive as the average froyo shop. The toppings aren't that special. Even worse, they do not provide any samples.

Their best flavors are plain and Greek honey. Each is rich, creamy, smooth, quite tangy, and thick. Much as I do enjoy both, they are overly sweet.

This is the third Go Greek to open in California this year. It’s also one of two froyo shops in Brentwood.
