California Froyo Shop Openings and Closings in 2025

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been tracking froyo shop openings and closings all year. This year, I found 36 new businesses serving froyo in California, including seven new Nick the Greek branches, four new Menchie's branches, four new Golden Spoon branches, and three new Pinkberry branches. 

This was slightly more than 2024, when I found 30 new businesses that serve froyo. 

I found seventeen froyo shop closings in 2025 (vs. 14 in 2024). Two froyo shops were lost in the LA wildfires. The two shops had the same ownership, and they also closed another location primarily due to the strain from losing two shops.

My goal is to track any new venue that serves froyo in soft serve form, including restaurants, convenience stores, pop-ups, froyo trucks, froyo trailers, vending machines, amusement parks, stadiums, etc. It's easier to track openings, since they're usually announced, but many places close quietly.

With 25 new froyo businesses set to open in 2026, that's considerably more than the eight we found at the end of 2024. Notably, Yogurtland plans to open 13 locations in California in 2026.

Of the 32 new businesses serving froyo in 2025, two were mobile units (6%) and eight (25%) were eateries (and not primarily froyo shops). A surprising 49% are counter-serve.

Of the 16 closures, several shops were over a decade old, including Bon Bon Berry (2014), Cantaloop (2007), Frog Frozen Yogurt (2012), SweetFrog (2014), Toppings (2012), Yogofina (2010), Yogurt Flavors (2009), and The Yogurt Shoppe Pacific Palisades (2011). The owners of The Yogurt Shoppe and Toppings plan to rebuild the shops.

Painful California Froyo Shop Closures in 2023

Yogurtland on Sunset Blvd, Hollywood

 

Fro-yo girl here. Before the year ends, I’d like to recognize a few froyo shops that closed this year that deserve a few words.

Ace Frozen Yogurt, 160 E Duarte Rd, Ste E, Arcadia, CA 91006

Ace Frozen Yogurt was the oldest remaining froyo shop in San Gabriel Valley. The counter-serve shop opened in 1986. Ace Frozen Yogurt. Ace Frozen Yogurt opened in 1986. The counter-serve froyo shop served Dannon YoCream froyo, smoothies, shaved ice, and more. The new owners, 626 Hospitality Group, kept the soft serve machines. They make top-notch soft serve ice cream with LA-inspired flavors from scratch.

Loving Cup, 2356 Polk St., San Francisco, CA 94109

Loving Cup closed the original location in Russian Hill earlier this summer. The shop opened in late 2008, specializing in hand-churned mix-in style froyo and rice pudding. Customers selected a size, a base (chocolate, vanilla or non-dairy), and mix-ins. The associate would hand churn everything together using a machine.

Menchie’s, 2901 Ocean Park Blvd, Ste 107, Santa Monica, CA 90405

The Menchie’s on Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica has had multiple owners. It was sold again this year and converted into The Yogurt Shoppe. Menchie’s Ocean Park Courtyard first opened in 2011, so it was 12 years old when it closed.

Menchie’s, 732 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403

Menchie’s opened on Montana Ave. in 2010 and was the scene of countless celebrity froyo sightings since opening across the street from TCBY. This was the first Menchie’s in Santa Monica.

Yogurt Stop, 8803 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Yogurt Stop closed after fifteen years because the landlord would not renew the lease. They baked some of their toppings and had the cutest names for their froyo flavors. They were open late, till 2 AM on some nights.

Yogurtland, 5541 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028

This Yogurtland first opened in 2007. There were two things that I really liked about it. First, you could see Yogurtland and the Hollywood sign together from the Target across the street. Second, there was a parking lot.

The Great Froyo Unknown

Fro-yo girl here. With the spread of the coronavirus, many froyo shops have temporarily closed or reduced their hours. Froyo events like Menchie’s Hello Sunshine Spring Party have been postponed. It’s highly likely that you’ll be hearing less of me for the next month or two because so many froyo shops have closed and even my outings to grocery stores are extremely rare.

Yes, I have froyo in the freezer and I still know froyo shops that are open, so I’ll be okay. But I wanted to share a few tips for how to support your local froyo business during these troubled times. If they’re still open, stock up (safely) on froyo and tip generously. Buy gift cards, write glowing reviews, tell your friends about your favorite shop, see if your shop is taking donations for their employees, reach out and tell them you miss them on social media, book future events, or contact elected politicians to ask them to support measures that will help the restaurant industry recover.

The longer the shops are closed or faced with serious declines in revenue, the less likely those shops will reopen.
