Sharetea x Shaomei Creamy Thai Tea Boba Ice Cream Review

Fro-yo girl here. Sharetea, the Taiwanese boba chain that was founded in 1992, has partnered with Shaomai, the Taiwanese boba ice cream brand, to introduce a limited time product, Creamy Thai Tea Boba Ice Cream with QQ brown sugar boba. One box comes with 4 individually wrapped bars. I found my box at 99 Ranch Market in San Gabriel, on sale for $7.98 each. The bars are imported from Taiwan.

Creamy Thai Boba Ice Cream Bars: Pretty good! These bars were firmer and creamier than most boba ice cream bars. They were sweet but not sweeter than other boba ice cream bars. Somehow the black tea and spices helped tame the impact of the sugar. The QQ boba were soft, sweet, and chewy. This is a richer boba ice cream bar but I really enjoyed it.

Each bar is 75g, 150 calories, 6g total fat, 22g total carbs, 15g total sugars, and 2g protein.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Trader Joe’s Black Tea & Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Review

Fro-yo girl here. Last summer, Trader Joe’s introduced their first boba ice cream: Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Coconut Frozen Dessert. Their frozen dessert is vegan and available in pints. On a recent trip to Trader Joe’s (I go every week), I noticed a new boba ice cream there: Black Tea and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert. A pint was $4.49.

On the side of the pint, TJ’s describes how boba is found in Taiwanese bubble tea. They also say that “in this Black Tea & Boba coconut non-dairy frozen dessert, you’ll find the pearls throughout, intertwined with a sweet brown sugar swirl.”

Black Tea & Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert: I liked the dense, creamy, smooth texture – very ice cream like. The brown sugar swirl overwhelms the other flavors, the way the coffee overwhelmed the other flavors in TJ’s Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert. Plus, the ice cream is far too sweet. The tapioca pearls were firm, sweet, and chewy.

One 2/3 cup serving is 240 calories, 5g total fat, 47g total carbs, and 31g of total sugars. The Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert had 24g total sugars per serving.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Magnolia Boba Ice Cream Review

Fro-yo girl here. On a recent trip to Seafood City at Eagle Rock Plaza, I noticed that Magnolia had a new line of boba ice cream. And it wasn’t just one flavor but eight. The ice cream features boba pearls that stay chewy when frozen. One pint was $6.99.

Available flavors: ube, mango, coffee, green tea, wintermelon, honeydew, brown sugar, and jasmine milk tea.

Jasmine milk tea boba ice cream: Whoa, super sweet. It was sweeter than most boba milk tea. The texture was thick and creamy. The pearls were soft and chewy but too soft. I liked the milk tea flavor but the ice cream was too sweet. The other flavors had about the same amount of sugar.

One serving is 2/3 cup, 300 calories, 17g total fat, 25g total sugars, 31g total carbs and 5g protein. Magnolia Ice Cream is made with real California milk in California.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Shaomei Boba Black Tea Latte Ice Cream Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. Shaomei, a Taiwanese brand, had (and maybe still has) the most popular brown sugar boba ice cream bars. They’ve been expanding their boba ice cream bar lineup with new flavors like pudding and taro. Recently, I found Shaomei Boba Black Tea Latte ice cream bars at Hmart Arcadia. One box, which contains four individually wrapped bars, was $7.99. One bar is 75 grams. These bars are also imported from Taiwan.

Boba Black Tea Latte ice cream bar: The bar was white with brown swirls. The interior of the bar was white. The bar was surprisingly icy (their brown sugar boba ice cream bars are much creamier) throughout. The tea flavor was strong and very bitter. The boba balls were soft, sweet, and chewy. I love a strong tea flavor but this bar was too bitter. The balls were plentiful.

One bar is 130 calories with 3.5g total fat, 15g total sugars, 23g total carbs, and less than 1g of protein.

I probably wouldn’t get these bars again because they’re bitter.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Shaomei Cookies & Boba Black Tea Ice Cream Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. I was shopping at Hmart Arcadia and I spotted a new flavor of boba ice cream bars: Shaomei Cookies & Boba Black Tea Ice Cream Bar. Shaomei is a Taiwanese brand and the bars are imported from Taiwan. There are four individually wrapped bars. One box was $7.99. Each bar is 73 grams.

Cookies & Boba Black Tea Ice Cream: By cookies, I think they mean something like Oreo cookies – chocolate sandwich cookies with a cream filling. The bar was creamier with soft, sweet, chewy boba and bits of cookies (tiny bits). It was creamier than the boba black tea latte ice cream bars. The tea flavor was strong but not as bitter of the boba black tea latte ice cream bars. It seemed lik e there were fewer boba balls. And it wasn’t as creamy as the brown sugar boba ice cream bars that made them famous.

One bar is 150 calories with 4.5g total fat, 15g total sugars, 26g total carbs, and 1g of protein.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

I-Mei Brown Sugar Pearl Milk Ice Cone Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve tried quite a few boba ice cream bars (different brands, different flavors) and some boba ice cream (scoopable), but I-Mei’s Brown Sugar Pearl Milk Ice Cone is the first boba ice cream cone that I’ve found. I spotted I-Mei’s ice cones at 168 Market in Alhambra, CA. One 11.29 oz box comes with 4 individually wrapped ice cones. A box was selling for $6.99 on sale, $7.99 regular price.

Brown Sugar Pearl Milk Ice Cone: The cone had a flat top with a layer of brown sugar on top, creamy ice cream underneath, chocolate around the outside of the ice cream part of the cone and inside the cone, tapioca pearls (boba) in the ice cream, and a sugar cone. I found it too sweet, sweeter than the boba ice cream bars. The brown sugar syrup top was very sweet and the ice cream was creamy and very sweet. The boba pearls were soft and chewy but they also seemed sweeter. The sugar cone was thin and not very crispy. There was no tea flavor. One cone is 220 calories, 8g total fat, 35g total carbs, 21g total sugars, and 2g protein. I would not get these again.

3 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Trader Joe’s Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Coconut Frozen Dessert Review

Fro-yo girl here. Trader Joe’s knows about the boba ice cream trend! They recently introduced their own boba ice cream, Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Coconut Frozen Dessert. Yes, it’s vegan. One pint is $4.29. A product of Thailand, the main ingredients are coconut milk, water, and sugar.

Plant-based is on trend, and making it coffee flavored also makes it different from the brown sugar and tea-based boba ice creams on the market.

Trader Joe’s describes it as follows, “Among the things we’ve learned whilst working in the food business is that if it looks like ice cream and it tastes like ice cream... it isn’t necessarily ice cream. You see, to be ice cream, a frozen dessert must include that defining ingredient – cream. So, if your frozen dessert happens to be made with a non-dairy liquid base – say, coconut milk (itself a potentially controversial moniker) – it may taste familiar, but it’s not technically ice cream. What it is, in the case of Trader Joe’s Cold Brew Coffee and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert, is darn delicious. It begins with a smooth, rich, and yes, creamy coconut milk base – coconut milk is the first ingredient – yet it doesn’t taste even a bit like coconut. Instead, what you’ll taste is cold brew coffee, made from Thai-grown Arabica coffee beans. You wouldn’t guess it’s non-dairy; you will be reminded of your favorite cup of coffee. This is especially true if you’re a boba aficionado – each pint is loaded with the much-loved, chewy tapioca pearls so often found in specialty tea & coffee shops. Frozen Dessert and Boba may seem like an odd pair, yet somehow the partnership really pops. Grab a pint, secure a spoon, and find out for yourself. You’ll find this vegan treat in our freezers with the other ice cream (and ice cream-like) desserts.”

Cold Brew Coffee & Boba Coconut Frozen Dessert: The coffee flavor is super strong, like Vietnamese coffee strong. They actually put ground coffee beans in the frozen dessert. The coffee flavor is so strong that it overwhelms the other flavors – you can’t taste the coconut or appreciate the flavor of the tapioca pearls. The pearls are firm, sweet, and chewy, so they do add a pleasant texture. And the pearls are plentiful. One serving is 230 calories, 9g total fat, 37g total carbs, and 24g total sugars. I like coffee and coffee ice cream, but I found the coffee flavor to be too strong.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Little Jasmine Brown Sugar Milk Tea Boba Ice Cream Review

Fro-yo girl here. Boba ice cream bars were all the rage but scoopable boba ice cream isn’t as common. On a recent trip to Hmart in Arcadia, I spotted two scoopable boba ice cream products, Little Jasmine Boba Ice Cream and HT Black Sugar Bubble Tea Ice Cream. Little Jasmine is a women-owned, California company. They make a variety of products, including frozen buns, vegan jerky, tea, roasted seaweed, and jelly candy.

A pint of Little Jasmine Brown Sugar Milk Tea Boba Ice Cream was $6.99 on sale (regular price $8.99) at H Mart in Arcadia, CA.

Brown Sugar Milk Tea Boba Ice Cream: The ice cream was white with a few thin brown sugar streaks and some triangular pieces of boba. The boba was the best part because they were a bit bigger, denser, and chewier than the boba one normally finds in boba ice cream. They reminded me of mochi/rice cakes. They also tasted good (sweet brown sugar). The ice cream part was creamy and a little airy. It tasted like plain ice cream though they did add condensed milk (I couldn’t really tell). The small amount of brown sugar swirls added subtle brown sugar flavor when they were encountered. I didn't see or taste tea, despite the product name. One serving, which is 2/3 cup, is 200 calories, 8g total fat, 30g total carbs, 25g sugars, and 3g protein.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

TrueDan Brown Sugar Bubble Milk Ice Cream Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. Truedan is a Taiwanese boba chain that was established in Taipei’s Shinlin Night Market in 2010. According to their website, they now have over 100 locations in 12 regions. I know they opened a shop in Daly City (Northern California) but they don’t seem to have a location in Southern California yet. They’re famous for their brown sugar bubble milk drink which contains no tea.

In late 2019, Truedan launched a line of bubble milk ice cream that included a brown sugar bubble milk ice cream cone and mochi ice cream in Taiwan. The cones were widely talked about and sold out quickly. The products arrived in Singapore around March 2020 and now they’re in the the US. At some point, they introduced a popsicle/ice bar version.

I found the brown sugar bubble milk ice cream bars at H Mart in Arcadia for $8.99/box (regular price). One box has four individually wrapped 80g bars. The bars are imported from Taiwan. There were only two boxes left at H Mart, so it seems popular. They didn’t have the brown sugar bubble milk ice cream cones or mochi ice cream with boba.

Brown Sugar Bubble Milk Ice Cream Bar: The bar smelled like brown sugar and had brown sugar swirls throughout. The texture was firm with an icier exterior shell and a creamier interior. It had a stronger milky flavor than comparable brown sugar boba ice cream bars. It was also not as creamy as some of the other brown sugar boba ice cream bars. The boba balls were soft and chewy. I found the bar to be less flavorful and definitely icier than other brands. One bar is 131 calories, 4.6g fats, 21.8g carbohydrates, and 14.4g sugars.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Haitai Black Sugar Bubble Tea Ice Cream Review

Fro-yo girl here. Haitai is a Korean brand whose products include black sugar bubble tea bars and scoopable ice cream. I haven’t seen their boba ice bars yet, but H Mart did have the scoopable version. The ice cream is imported from Korea. One 600ml tub was $5.99 regular price at H Mart in Arcadia, CA.

Black Sugar Bubble Tea Ice Cream: Unlike Little Jasmine’s boba ice cream, Haitai’s was infused with brown bubble syrup throughout. The ice cream was brown in color with a few streaks of black sugar. The bubbles were smaller, harder and not as chewy as Little Jasmine’s. Haitai’s ice cream also seemed a bit icier. But if you love brown sugar flavor, it has the most by far. And it smells very nice, like brown sugar. It’s made with black tea but the brown sugar flavor is much stronger than the tea flavor.

One serving is 100ml, 125 calories, 3.5g total fat, 22g total carbs, 17g total sugars, and 2g protein.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
