What Happened to Orange Leaf’s Orange Unicorn? He Must Have Retired

Fro-yo girl here. Remember Orange Unicorn? He was hired to be Orange Leaf’s “spokes-thingie” in April 2016. His first task was to promote "You Be You Day" on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. On You Be You Day, which was a cute promotion where Orange Leaf guests were encouraged to celebrate their uniqueness and be rewarded with free froyo. He represented being unique and original.

Sadly, there was only one You Be You Day. Orange Unicorn was featured in an augmented reality coloring page, YouTube videos, on Orange Leaf cups, plush toys, and in-store signage. He liked to say things like #beweird, #beorange, be yourself, it’s the only thing you’re super good at, don’t be afraid of being different, be afraid of spiders, and why not is more fun than why.

There is no sign of Orange Unicorn on the current Orange Leaf website. The last Instagram post by Orange Leaf that mentions Orange Unicorn was in February 2018. The cups no longer feature Orange Unicorn. But his trademark is still active.

Orange Leaf no longer has a spokes-thingie but it has a slogan, Flavor Freedom. “Orange Leaf offers freedom from average every day options. From flavors, cups, and cones, to smoothies, shakes, and cakes, we give our guest the freedom to create whatever sweet treat they can come up with next. Our froyo flavors are the best, because we make them that way. No really, we do. Each flavor recipe is uniquely ours and you can’t get it anywhere else!”

Orange Unicorn was cute but the slogan is more mature. I hope Orange Unicorn is doing well in his froyo forest.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Fro-yo Chain Store Location Count

Fro-yo girl here. It's time for another update of the chain store location count. Several are close to having 200 open locations. Wondering who’s in the lead?

* MENCHIE’S: 199 locations in the U.S. (vs. 98 last August) and 28 locations outside the U.S.
* ORANGE LEAF FROZEN YOGURT: 190 locations in the U.S.
* RED MANGO: 182 locations in the U.S. (vs. 128 last August), including a whopping 47 in NY.
* YOGURTLAND: Approximately 181 locations in the U.S. (vs. 96 last August), 9 locations outside the U.S. Their website doesn’t make it easy to view a list of individual locations.
* PINKBERRY: 139 locations in the U.S. (vs. 116 locations last August) and 61 locations outside the U.S. The SF location was store #200. They have many locations in Peru and United Arab Emirates.
* CHERRYBERRY: 102 locations in the U.S.

The store counts are based on the locations listed on the company website in August. Menchie’s is now the largest self-serve fro-yo chain in the U.S. (and the world). They’ve been opening an average of 10 stores a month. Menchie’s expects to have 500 stores open by the end of 2013. Yogurtland plans to have 1,000 locations open by the end of 2017.

Orange Tree Rebranded as Orange Leaf

Fro-yo girl here. Orange Tree Frozen Yogurt has been rebranded as Orange Leaf. Once virtually indistinguishable from Tutti Frutti and Yogofina, Orange Tree, oops, I mean Orange Leaf, now aspires to be Yogurtland. Here's the evidence that Orange Leaf is a Yogurtland knock-off.

*PRICE: Orange Leaf, $0.30 an ounce/ Yogurtland, $0.30 an ounce
*NUMBER OF FRO-YO FLAVORS ON AVERAGE: Orange Leaf, 16/ Yogurtland, 16
*FREE WATER: Orange Leaf, Yes/ Yogurtland, Yes
*LEAF IN THE LOGO: Orange Leaf, Yes/ Yogurtland, Yes

The strongest evidence of being a knock-off is the new biodegradable Orange Leaf spoon AND they had pink, green & white sprinkles (those are Yogurtland colors). It takes effort to rebrand and I'm not sure why they didn't spend some effort on improving their frozen yogurt quality. If Orange Leaf doesn't work, maybe they can try Orange Stem next.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
