Jeni’s New Punk Stargonaut Collection Flavors (Includes Two Frozen Yogurt Flavors)

Fro-yo girl here. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams just introduced a new ice cream collection, Punk Stargonaut. It’s inspired by a distant galaxy. The flavor collection includes Cosmic Bloom, Nebula Berry, Purple Star Born, and Supermoon. I believe the first three flavors are new and the first two are made with yogurt (so they’re frozen yogurt).

Jeni’s scoop shops were also handing out eclipse glasses with purchase.

Cosmic Bloom froyo:
This flavor seemed popular. A lot of people ordered it while I was there. It’s described as “citrusy like a mandarin, refreshing like a kiwi, and punchy like passion fruit.” It tasted like tart floral peaches. It was sweeter but still tangy.

Nebula Berry froyo: This flavor is described as “Tart like a blueberry and vibrant like a raspberry with an elderflower fragrance.” It definitely tasted like tangy berries and I could detect a bit of the elderflower scent. It’s actually quite sweet but also very tangy.

Both flavors were super flavorful, thick, and rich.

Purple Star Born: Made with cultured buttermilk, Purple Star Born is Jeni’s first grape-flavored ice cream. It’s described as “reminiscent of Concord grape and puckery-like blackcurrants. Intensely juicy!” It was also tangy and intense.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Jeni’s Grand Opening in Highland Park, Los Angeles on November 30

Fro-yo girl here. Jeni’s Ice Cream’s scoop shop soft opened in Highland Park, Los Angeles on November 16 and the grand opening is set for 7 PM – 11 PM on Thursday, November 30. I won’t be able to attend but if you’re free, it’s worth waiting. The first 50 customers will get exclusive Jeni’s gifts (and they’ve been very generous at previous grand opening events). Everyone who attends will receive free scoops. The holiday flavors have arrived, including White Chocolate Peppermint, Rum Ball, Merry Berry, and Boozy Eggnog.

I visited the shop today. It’s in an older building on the corner of Avenue 56 and Figueroa. They had almost dozen flavors, including several dairy-free options and one froyo. Look for the gluten-free symbol if you're avoiding gluten. A standard size (up to 2 flavors) is $6.95 and comes with a buttercrisp waffle wedge. Flights and pints are available. Choose from a bowl or cone. You can also opt for the affogato.

The ice cream is made with the best ingredients, including grass fed milk from Ohio. The flavors are generally amazing but not crazy or super exotic.

There’s also some cute Jeni’s merch for sale: cookbooks, t-shirts, sprinkles, bandanas, tasting spoons, sauces, etc.

Yes, it is an ice cream shop but Jeni’s has the best buttermilk frozen yogurt! You should get the Rainbow Buttermilk froyo and the Merry Berry. Here’s the description of Merry Berry: “But then — like a sweet-tart little beacon in all the richness — there are the jam-filled cookies. The bright spots on the table that liven up our palates with preserved fruits. Merry Berry is a celebration of those cookies, wrapped into ice cream. Fragrant brambleberry cream, light on its feet with a little tart buttermilk and lush yogurt folded in. A made-from-scratch raspberry coulis for satisfying jamminess in every bite. And crushed amaretti cookies that sandwiches the whole thing together, like a Linzer cookie.” Merry Berry has yogurt! And it’s tart and berry forward. Rainbow Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt features raspberry, key lime, and passion fruit froyo. It's extra tangy and rich.

Get some froyo and enjoy! Also, if you are a fan, join the rewards program.

Jeni’s is Opening Soon in Highland Park (Los Angeles)

Fro-yo girl here. Little elves are busy transforming 5601 N Figueroa St. in Highland Park into a Jeni’s Ice Cream scoop shop! The Jeni’s sign is up and they’re working on the interior now. They’ll be giving away free scoops during the grand opening. Yes, it is an ice cream shop but Jeni’s has the best buttermilk frozen yogurt!

Jeni’s Mont Blanc Frozen Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Holiday 2016 flavors included one new frozen yogurt flavor, Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc features “toasted chestnuts and molasses with fresh organic yogurt, buttermilk, and cream.”

I know Jeni’s makes very tangy and intensely flavored frozen yogurt, so I wasn’t sure how her tangy style would work with chestnuts and molasses. The Mont Blanc buttermilk frozen yogurt is the sweetest Jeni’s frozen yogurt that I’ve tried to date. The tang isn’t there. The molasses has a deep, rich, sweet flavor that dominates this frozen yogurt. The chestnut gets lost because of the molasses. The texture was super dense, rich and creamy.

Verdict: I prefer the fruity tart frozen yogurt flavors that Jeni makes but Mont Blanc would be nice on top of pie or with a hot beverage (e.g., in an affogato).

Take advantage of Jeni’s special now through Cyber Monday: Buy 4 pints, get 2 pints in the scoop shops and online (use the code TWOFREE at checkout).

Rainbow Yo, the Better, Grown Up Rainbow Sherbet

Fro-yo girl here. Summer and childhood remind me of rainbow sherbet, specifically Thrifty’s Rainbow Sherbet. Thrifty’s Rainbow Sherbet featured orange, raspberry and lime sherbets swirled together. It was so colorful and fun to eat. I also liked that it was creamy and fruity.

The other day I saw a sign for Rainbow Yo outside of Jeni’s Los Feliz and ordered a cup with Black Currant, Lemon and Mango Lassi frozen yogurt. The combination of the three froyo flavors, their vivid color and the creaminess totally brought me back to my childhood days of eating rainbow sherbet, only Jeni’s version was way better – with varying levels of tartness, extra creaminess and quality ingredients like biodynamic yogurt.

Jeni’s also makes a Rainbow Frozen Yogurt with a blend of Red Raspberry, Lime Cardamom and Passion Fruit frozen yogurt. It’s not available year round but you can make your own Rainbow Yo by choosing a couple of Jeni’s frozen yogurt flavors (like the new Black Currant Frozen Yogurt) and eating them together. Rainbow cones have been spotted at Jeni's Scoop Shops.

Rainbowing ice cream or frozen yogurt involves putting two or more different flavors into one container so that when you run your scoop or spoon through, you get all the flavors.

Happy Pride Month! Eat Rainbow Yo!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Jeni’s Colors Collection: New Frozen Yogurt Flavors

Fro-yo girl here. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams new Colors Collection has launched: six ice creams and frozen yogurts inspired by the colors of a Matisse painting. Three of the six new flavors are frozen yogurt (yay!)

Persian Orange Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt: Mango, passion fruit and blood orange. This tasted tasted like a sweet yet tangy juicy orange…the sweet mango, bright orange and passionfruit notes blend perfectly to create a complex new taste. It’s a more mellow flavor than Ultramarine. This was our favorite new flavor (Mr. Froyo agreed with me).

Ultramarine Blue Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt: Wild Maine blueberries meet buttermilk, biodynamic yogurt, grass grazed milk and cream. This was a surprisingly very sour flavor. The sourness is so pronounced that it overwhelms the other flavors: blueberry, yogurt, buttermilk. The fruity berry notes hit you after that initial sourness fades. It tasted a little different than pure blueberries because they also added pineapple and raspberries. The texture was rich, creamy, and thick.

Cadmium Yellow Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt: Crushed whole lemons with bergamot, white grapefruit…this flavor wasn’t as sour as Ultramarine. The other Jeni’s lemon frozen yogurt flavors seem more intense than Cadmium Yellow.

The seasonal color collection flavors are available for a limited time only. Get a pint or a scoop at your local Jeni’s scoop shop.

Handmade in Columbus, Ohio, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are made with Snowville milk and cream from grassfed cows in Ohio. Their rich, indulgent, creamy frozen yogurt uses biodynamic organic yogurt and has live and active yogurt cultures.

Jeni’s Opens First West Coast Scoop Shop

Fro-yo girl here. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams has finally arrived on the West Coast and I don’t mean that the pints are available at markets or the Jeni’s ice cream truck. That’s right, Jeni’s just opened her first scoop shop on the west of the Mississippi in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The opening night party was held on Friday, 3/20, from 7-10 PM and included free scoops, an appearance by founder Jeni Britton Bauer (an ice cream/froyo  legend), and free ceramic flavor mugs for the first 50 people in line.  As an added bonus the first 50 people actually got Jeni’s tote bags and flavor mugs, plus free scoops. The line must have had well over 100 people.

Before they opened I spied employees making waffle cones and batches of ice cream. There was a mini Ohio State/Buckeye reunion.

The new flavor mugs come in 8 colors/flavors. I was lucky enough to receive Mango Lassi Frozen Yogurt 1997, the only frozen yogurt flavor represented in the flavor mug series. Destiny!

Of course I selected two scoops of froyo: Lemon Buttermilk Tart Frozen Yogurt and Lime Cardamom Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt. Both were luxuriously creamy, silky scoops. They’re made with full fat biodynamic  yogurt. The buttermilk gives it extra tanginess, which I love. The lemon flavor has crunchy shortbread bits and lemon curd ribbons – insanely good.

I’ve been a huge fan of Jeni’s for years (I own both of her cookbooks, went to the book signing to meet Jeni, bought pints, visited the Chicago scoop shop) and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Jeni’s makes the most amazing frozen yogurt!!!!

Proudly handmade in Columbus, Ohio, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are made with Snowville milk and cream from grassfed cows in Ohio. Their frozen yogurt uses biodynamic organic yogurt and has live and active yogurt cultures.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Frozen Yogurt at Andronico’s

Fro-yo girl here. Proudly handmade in Columbus, Ohio, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are made with Snowville milk and cream from grassfed cows in Ohio. Their frozen yogurt uses biodynamic organic yogurt and has live and active yogurt cultures. It’s pretty spectacular.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams can be found at Safeway, Berkeley Bowl, Mollie Stone’s and other markets in the Bay Area. I’ve found that many locations only carry 1 or 2 of Jeni’s frozen yogurt flavors.

I was impressed with the Jeni’s frozen yogurt selection at Andronico’s on Irving St. in San Francisco. During my visit they had the following flavors:

  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon
  • Lime Cardamom
  • Mango Lassi
  • Red Raspberry
A pint is $11.99. You can also order ice cream and fro-yo pints from Jeni’s website. The website lists the stores that carry Jeni’s.

5 out of 5 stars.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Chicago Scoop Shop

Fro-yo girl here. Where can you find the best frozen yogurt in Chicago? While I certainly wasn’t able to visit every shop, I would be surprised if some place has better frozen yogurt than Jeni’s, even though Jeni's only has the scoopable kind.

I knew that I had to try Jeni's new cultured key lime pie frozen yogurt flavor with salty graham cracker gravel mixed right in. It’s described as “ultra-thick, ultra-creamy and ultra-tart.” Cultured key lime pie frozen yogurt is made with cultured buttermilk, biodynamic organic yogurt (from Ohio), and key lime juice. The actual frozen yogurt lives up to the description. It’s incredibly flavorful and you can taste the tart yogurt flavor, the key lime juice, the buttermilk and the extra salty graham cracker gravel. The graham cracker gravel adds a crunchy texture and sophisticated salty flavor. The texture is dense, thick and super creamy.

The lemon frozen yogurt was also superb and bursting with tangy flavor but the graham cracker gravel really puts the cultured key lime pie flavor over the top.

If you make it to a Jeni’s scoop shop, I recommend trying the gravel - which you can buy by the bag. The Chicago location is very close to the Southport station (Brown Line).

Jeni’s recently released a follow-up to her first cookbook, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. The new book, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts has over 100 new recipes and they’re not just for ice cream. Her book tour kicks off this summer and will include demonstrations and book signings. Dates and locations are listed on Jeni’s website.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Fro-yo Review

Fro-yo girl here. Last Christmas I received Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home cookbook and this year I was finally able to try her fro-yo. I came across pints at Gelson’s for $10.99. They had one flavor of fro-yo, lemon, 9 flavors of ice cream and ice cream sandwiches for $6.99 each.

Jeni’s is handmade in Columbus, Ohio with Snowville milk and cream (from grassfed cows in Ohio). They use the freshest local ingredients and responsibly raised exotic ingredients.

* Lemon frozen yogurt: The texture is dense, thick and very creamy. It’s very tart and much creamier than a sorbet. The sweet tanginess reminded me of lemonade. The lemon flavor was intense and pure. The lemon fro-yo has live and active cultures.

You can order ice cream and fro-yo pints from Jeni’s website. The fro-yo flavors available include: Apricot, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime Cardamom, Lime Cardamom with Lingonberries, Mango Lassi, Passionfruit, and Raspberry

The website lists the stores that carry Jeni’s. You can find Jeni's Ice Creams locally at Molliestone's.

5 out of 5 stars.

Fro-yo Girl Holiday Wrapup

Fro-yo girl here. Did you receive fro-yo gifts under your Christmas tree? Santa (and others) gave me Korres Yoghurt body butter, Meiji yogurt caramels (my favorite yogurt candy), a Cuisinart automatic frozen yogurt maker, and Jeni’s splendid ice creams at home cookbook.

Yes, I’ve been busy making fro-yo at home for the first time. It’s surprisingly easy to make good tart fro-yo at home. I’ll be tweaking the recipe and trying new things. Of course I will still be visiting fro-yo shops.

Jeni’s cookbook has recipes for many creative ice cream and fro-yo flavors. Fro-yo recipes included: lemon & blueberry, passionfruit, baked rhubarb, lime cardamom, grapefruit hibiscus, cucumber cayenne & honeydew.

Menchie’s had some special holiday items for sale, including silver chocolate coins for Hannukah, embossed with images of Menchie and a cup of fro-yo. Yum.

I decorated a Really Big Gingerbread Man from Trader Joe’s. Guess what? He likes fro-yo.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
