LA Weekly’s 10 Places to Get Your Fro-Yo Fix, the Update 10 Years Later

Fro-yo girl here. Back in 2009, LA Weekly published an article called Top 10 Places To Get Your Froyo Fix. Since ten years have elapsed, I thought I’d take a look at the places that made the Top 10 list.

  • Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt: It’s not the same Golden Spoon that was founded in 1983. In 2012-2013, Golden Spoon experimented with converting stores to self-serve and ultimately decided not to convert any other locations. In 2017, seven locations closed, along with the corporate office. There are no longer any Golden Spoon franchisees or a corporate office to oversee Golden Spoon locations. However, there are still Golden Spoon locations.
  • Pure Naked Yogurt: I believe all the locations have closed: Encino and Westfield Century City. They only had one flavor of yogurt, tart, and only had healthy toppings.
  • 21 Choices: 21 Choices started in Pasadena in the 90’s. Later, they expanded to Claremont and USC. The USC location closed. The Pasadena location was going strong after being closed for months, because their building needed earthquake retrofitting. 21 Choices decided to move their Pasadena location to the corner of Fair Oaks & Union. The new shop is still under construction. They're known for their mix in style froyo, creative flavors, and wide toppings selection.
  • Studio Yogurt: Studio Yogurt opened in Studio City in 1997 and closed in 2014. The location was taken over by Yogurtland. It was an old school yogurt shop known for generous portions.
  • Humphrey Yogart: Humphrey Yogart almost closed when they lost their lease in 2016, but at the last moment, they found a new space, inside Gelson’s in Sherman Oaks. The menu has been pared down, but you can still choose your frozen yogurt base and mix-ins.
  • Yogurtland: Yogurtland basically took over self-serve froyo in California and they expanded to other states and countries. There are more than 320 locations.
  • Pinkberry: Pinkberry started the froyo craze in 2005 and was acquired by Kahala Brands in 2015.
  • Menchie’s: Menchie’s started in Valley Village, CA and grew to become the largest self-serve froyo franchise in the world. It now has over 530 stores.
  • New Zealand Natural: New Zealand Natural was the only place on LA Weekly’s list that I never tried. It is a global franchise network based in Auckland, New Zealand. All the locations in Southern California have closed. They served scoopable frozen yogurt that could be blended with fruit and turned into soft serve.
  • Red Mango: Red Mango had 8 SoCal locations when the article was published in 2009. Only one location remains in Southern California, the one near Staples Center. It opened in 2013.

Two of the top 10 went out of business: Studio Yogurt and Pure Naked Yogurt. That’s impressive, considering ten years have gone by, and not many frozen yogurt shops or restaurants last ten years. Studio Yogurt was replaced by Yogurtland and Westfield Century City, where Pure Naked Yogurt was, has multiple froyo options (Bloomingdale’s Forty Carrots, Yogurtland). New Zealand Natural still has locations in Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand (but none in the US).

I’m surprised the Bigg Chill didn’t make the list, since it was open at the time the article was written and has quite a following. Only two of the top 10 were self-serve, though Red Mango added the self-serve format in 2012. That's because the list is old and self-serve hadn't taken over yet.

Go Greek Closes in Thousand Oaks and Glendale, CA

Fro-yo girl here. Go Greek closed two mall-based locations in Southern California at the end of March.

The Oaks Mall (Thousand Oaks, CA) shop opened in May 2018 and the Glendale Galleria shop opened in March 2018. The Glendale space has been stripped of signage and equipment, but a new tenant hasn’t moved in yet.

While I’m not sure how long the average frozen yogurt shop stays open, I rarely see frozen yogurt shops close in under a year. Menchie’s has been open at the Oaks Mall for seven years. I think you might be able to get frozen yogurt at the Haagen Dazs inside the Glendale Galleria or across the street at the Americana, but there is no frozen yogurt shop left at either mall.

The sad part is that Go Greek had high quality yogurt which they imported from Greece (it was available fresh and frozen). I also appreciated their healthier toppings. Their shops were attractive and had a high- end Greek boutique feel.

Unfortunately, I experienced multiple problems with the Go Greek Glendale location though, starting with my first visit. Their promotions aren’t clear and the customer service wasn’t friendly either. I tried to attend the grand opening of Go Greek Glendale, which was announced to the public on Instagram and Facebook. However, when I arrived, I was told it was a private event. On another occasion, I showed up for a promotion that they posted on Instagram, only to be told that I needed to show an email that they sent with the promotion. This was not stated on their Instagram post. Anyway, it was very frustrating and soured my feelings towards the entire chain, but the Glendale location in particular. One slip-up is understandable but who wants to deal with a pattern of poor communication?

The remaining Go Greek locations include Beverly Hills, Woodland Hills, Santa Monica, and Las Vegas.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

* GO GREEK YOGURTERIA, 350 W Hillcrest Dr., Thousand Oaks, CA 91360

Alden’s Organic Freckled Strawberry Yogurt Bar Review

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve seen Alden’s Organic ice cream for years, but I never saw any frozen yogurt offering, so I never tried it – until now. Alden’s Organic has a new frozen yogurt product, Freckled Strawberry yogurt bars, introduced at Expo West this year. I spotted the yogurt bars at Sprouts. One box was $4.99 regular price, $4.49 on sale. A box comes with four bars.

Freckled Strawberry: The bar was soft and creamy. It was quite sweet, with no yogurt flavor. It tasted like strawberry ice cream. The strawberries were blended into the bar.

One bar is 90 calories, with 1.5g total fat, 19g total carbohydrate, 13g sugars, and 2g protein. The yogurt bars are organic, non-GMO, and contain live and active cultures.

It looks like Alden’s strawberry yogurt bars are the same as Julie’s Organic strawberry yogurt bars because it says New Look same great taste on the box. On the side of the box, which I didn’t notice till I was at home, it says Julie’s Organic is now Alden’s Organic. I gave the bars 3 stars back in 2011. I hadn’t had the bars since then, because they’re too sweet. Both brands are owned by Oregon Ice Cream.

Ingredients: Cultured nonfat milk, cane sugar, strawberries, tapioca syrup, cream, short chain fructan fiber, natural strawberry flavor with other natural flavors, guar gum, red beet juice concentrate (color), locust bean gum, citric acid, pectin, xanthan gum.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

3 out of 5 stars.

So Delicious Oatmilk Dairy-Free Frozen Dessert Review

Fro-yo girl here. Oatmilk in coffee is good. Oatmilk yogurt is horrible. Oatmilk is so popular that it’s now available in frozen dessert form from So Delicious. I found the pints at Sprouts for $6.49 regular price, $4.21 on sale.

Oatmeal Cookie Oatmilk: I love oatmeal cookies. The frozen oatmilk dessert was creamy, sweet but not crazy sweet, and mild. There were small chunks of oatmeal cookie dough which were soft and not overly sweet and crunchy chocolate flecks. The aftertaste was clean with a hint of coconut. I really liked the oaty flavor and the addition of pea protein. It seemed less heavy than dairy-based ice cream. Mr. Froyo liked it too, though he wished it had less sugar. One serving is 2/3 cup, 250 calories, 12g total fat, 23g total sugars, and 36g total carbs.

Ingredients (Oatmeal Cookie): Oatmilk (filtered water, whole oat flour), organic cane sugar, organic coconut oil, organic tapioca syrup, organic brown sugar, rolled oats, organic rice starch, cane sugar, raisins, pea protein, palm oil, organic sunflower oil, cocoa, organic molasses, rice starch, natural flavor, sea salt, chocolate liquor, locust bean gum, guar gum, cinnamon, citric acid).

Available flavors: Oatmeal Cookie, Peanut Butter Raspberry, Caramel Apple Crumble

The oatmilk frozen desserts are gluten free and non-GMO. They’re better than I expected – not super healthy but that’s probably why it’s so good. There aren’t that many flavors but the ones they’ve chosen complement oatmilk.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pinkberry UglyDolls Sweepstakes, New Flavor, New Cup Design

Fro-yo girl here. Pinkberry announced a new UglyDolls promotion a few days ago. There’s an UglyDolls sweepstakes, new flavor, recommended swirl, and a new cup design too. The movie will be released on May 3.

Kiwi Strawberry frozen yogurt: I’m excited about this new flavor, which is tart based (yay!!!). New tart froyo flavors have become very rare. Kiwi Strawberry froyo is made with real kiwis and strawberries. I could see the kiwi seeds throughout and liked how they added a bit of texture to the otherwise smooth frozen yogurt. It was tangy but not as tangy as some of the other Pinkberry tart flavors. I’ve never had kiwi strawberry froyo before! Menchie’s had a Strawberry Kiwi Twist sorbet in 2015. TCBY offers a Kiwi Strawberry sorbet.

Moxy’s Kiwi Strawberry Swirl: Moxy’s Swirl consists of Kiwi Strawberry frozen yogurt topped with fresh cut kiwis, strawberries, and a sprinkle of candy hearts. The sprinkles added some crunch though I would have preferred mochi instead. But, pairing Kiwi Strawberry with fresh strawberries and kiwi makes sense and the sprinkles were cute.

UglyDolls Cup: The new medium cup design features 7 UglyDolls characters from the upcoming movie. I’m not sure what all their names are.

UglyDolls Sweepstakes: Pinkberry is giving away 75 UglyDolls Family Fun Packs. The fun pack includes 4 Fandango movie tickets and UglyDolls merchandise. You can enter at www.pinkberry.com/UglyDolls now through May 2, 2019

Winner of the 1st Easter Froyo Shop Spirit Award

Fro-yo girl here. Every Halloween, I select the froyo shop with the most Halloween spirit. This year I decided to expand that concept to cover Easter, by selecting the froyo shop with the most Easter spirit.

I’ve seen quite a bit of Easter spirit out there, including special Easter froyo creations, Easter toppings (e.g., jelly beans, Cadbury eggs, PEEPS), Easter basket giveaway contests, Easter designs on froyo cups, and Easter froyo cakes.

Smile Yogurt, Pinkberry Japan, and the Yog Bar UK are offering Easter parfaits and sundaes. The Yog Bar created Luxury Egg Yog Sundaes – filling giant chocolate eggs with froyo and toppings. Yo-Chi Frozen Yogurt in Australia teamed up with Tub O’Dough for a special Easter topping, Easter flavor cookie dough.

The winner of the first annual Easter froyo shop spirit is…The Yog Bar. The Yog Bar has Luxury Egg Yog Sundaes this year: The Monster Mini Egg Yog Sundae, The Crème Egg Yog Sundae, and The Galaxy Golden Egg Sundae. Each sundae is packed with Easter goodness. For example, the Monster Mini Egg Yog Sundae is filled with mini egg cookie dough, froyo, white chocolate sauce, and crushed mini eggs. The Golden Egg Sundae has caramel sauce, salted caramel cookie dough, froyo (your choice of flavor)/ Galaxy Golden Eggs, and Cadbury’s caramel sauce served in half a chocolate Easter egg. And the Crème Egg Yog Sundae features white chocolate sauce, chocolate chip cookie dough, choice of froyo, half a Crème Egg, and chocolate fudge sauce drizzle, served in half a Cadbury’s chocolate egg.

The Yog Bar also partnered with a restaurant, Wolf + Lamb, for an Easter contest. The prize was a free visit to The Yog Bar for up to 4 people and a free visit to Wolf + Lamb. Naturally, they offer special Easter toppings as well.

Rave Organics in Newbury Park, CA Has Closed

Fro-yo girl here. Rave Organics opened last April in Newbury Park, CA. The café specialized in organic food. The menu included organic pizza, frozen yogurt, smoothies, sandwiches, breakfast, & other healthy meals. I stopped by in May 2018 for some organic frozen yogurt. Although the yogurt and toppings were self-serve, they were priced according to cup size.

Rave Organics closed for repairs due to flood damage in late December 2018. The sign in the window called it a temporary closure. The damage sounded extensive and the temporary closure has been declared as a permanent closure. Rave Organics website and Facebook page have disappeared.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

* RAVE ORGANICS: 520 N. Ventu Park Road, Suite 140, Newbury Park, CA 91320
