Fresh & Easy Tart Frozen Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. Fresh & Easy has its private label brand of tart fro-yo available in the freezer section. I spotted one size, 32 ounces, and 2 flavors: Just Plain and Mango ($2.99). Both flavors are nonfat and have live and active cultures.
I'm not sure how long it's been offered...probably since late last year. We don't have F&E in the Bay Area, so I haven't been to one of their locations in months.

I tried the Plain Tart which is described as pleasantly tart with a hint of sweetness. It's definitely tart and does have a sweet aftertaste. I liked how it was more creamy, smoother and less acidic than Trader Joe's plain tart fro-yo. It's quite dense in texture and has a bit of sourness. I find it's better with toppings like almonds, fruit and cereal.

4 out of 5 stars.

The Year of Acai

Fro-yo girl here. I darted into Whole Foods the other day and received a free serving of a new frozen confection, Jolly Llama sorbet. The sorbet comes in a single serving size ($1.79 each at Whole Foods). Squeeze and eat for a quick, fat free, and nutritious fruity treat. While the blueberry sorbet was nice, I couldn’t help but think that it would taste better if it were fro-yo. The size is just right and it’s really convenient to eat.

Jolly Llama comes in four flavors:
* Mango
* Blueberry
* Acai berry
* Strawberry

I wish there were more supermarket fro-yo options (something better than Dreyer's and Trader Joe's tart fro-yo). If it works for sorbet, why not fro-yo?

The acai berry flavor seems to be the superfruit flavor of 2009. Last year was the year for pomegranate fro-yo (everyone seems to have pomegranate fro-yo now). Next year it might be baobab? Acai blueberry fro-yo can be found at select Tuttimelon locations (you can see my acai blueberry Tuttimelon parfait), select Blush Organic Frozen Yogurt locations, and Yogen Fruz.

Fro-yo Mentioned in TJ's May 2009 Fearless Flyer

Fro-yo girl here. There’s no denying that tart fro-yo is everywhere (e.g., Dreyer’s, Haagen Dazs and Trader Joe’s offer tart fro-yo now). This week I received the May 2009 Fearless Flyer. Since I love TJ’s (they were the first of the three to come out with tart fro-yo), I always read the Fearless Flyer. I’m saving this one since it mentions their Non Fat Plain Frozen Yogurt. They describe it as “similar to the offerings in those oh-so-trendy yogurt shops, this superb frozen yogurt that contains live, active, probiotic cultures, has a tantalizingly tart taste and absolutely no fat.”

Another Wish Comes True: Trader Joe’s Tart Fro-Yo

Fro-yo girl here. Thanks for the tip, Diane P. Back in January, I listed a few fro-yo wishes for 2009. I wished for Target and TJ’s to carry tart fro-yo. Well, TJ’s has done it (no wonder I love TJ’s).

A quart of nonfat plain pleasantly tart frozen yogurt is only $3.49. Cheap! It has live and active cultures.

TJ’s fro-yo is a bit better than the natural tart by Haagen Dazs because it’s actually quite tart (HD’s fro-yo lacks tartness). The tartness comes from citric acid. It’s creamy and dense, without the refreshing quality that good tart fro-yo has. I wish it had more of a milky, yogurt flavor.

3.5 stars (out of 5).
