2023 Froyo Scene in Tucson, Arizona

Frozen Delight, Tucson

Pinkberry, Tucson

Fro-yo girl here. Greater Tucson has over 1 million residents and it’s in a desert, so it’s a good place for froyo. In Tucson, there are two old school, counter-serve froyo shops, Frozen Delight and Sundaze. Tutti Frutti, Peachwave and Froyo Fresh are self-serve froyo shops while Pinkberry represents the counter-serve, high-end froyo in town.

Current Froyo Shops in Tucson

  • Froyo Fresh, 8245 N Silverbell Rd #127, Tucson, is a self-serve shop that changed ownership in 2019. They also have hard ice cream and ice cream rolls. Froyo Fresh opened in 2018.
  • Frozen Delight, 1101 N Wilmot Rd #107, Tucson, was founded in 1990, making it the oldest existing froyo shop in Tucson. The local family-owned business offers counter-serve froyo, a case of Thrifty ice cream, boba drinks, milkshakes, and churros. They have non-fat froyo, low lactose and low sugar options. The froyo was good but the kind you find in many froyo shops. Frozen Delight seems to have changed names a few times. It was called Yogurt Delight and Yogurt Station.
  • Peachwave, 12125 N Oracle Rd, Oro Valley, is a self-serve froyo chain that opened in June 2021. It looks like one of the better Peachwave locations with fresh baked cookies and some interesting local toppings. My friend who lives nearby said it was okay. Peachwave is based in Holland, Michigan and has been licensing their brand since 2009. I’ve been to a few Peachwave locations in California and they’re decent but the flavors are standard.
  • Pinkberry, 3820 W River Rd Suite 140, Tucson, opened in 2018 in Marana Marketplace. This counter-serve location carries six froyo flavors a day and also offers made-to-order smoothies. I like their tart flavors better than their sweet flavors. Their original tart was the flavor that started the second froyo craze.
  • Sundaze, 4777 E Sunrise Dr #139, Tucson, is closed on Sundays. Go figure. The family-owned business opened in 2002, taking over Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe. Sundaze offers counter-serve froyo, Thrifty Ice Cream, smoothies, shakes, malts, and yogurt pies. The ownership changed about two years ago.
  • Tutti Frutti, 5870 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, opened inside Park Place Mall in 2010. It’s self-serve and part of an international chain of froyo shops.

I found so many closed froyo shops in Tucson that I’m writing about them in a separate post.

New Peachwave Redondo Beach & South Bay Froyo Updates

Fro-yo girl here. I don’t make it out the South Bay too often and I missed the mid-July opening of Peachwave Frozen Yogurt in Redondo Beach. Peachwave is on a busy street and inside Artesia Produce Market. The market was recently remodeled by the new owners. You can get tacos, sandwiches, and guacamole from the deli inside and then go to the very back for froyo (designed to be self-serve, currently full service due to COVID-19). It’s currently full service.

There are 12 flavors a day (flavors rotate) and the usual toppings for 59 cents an ounce (higher price than average). They had lots of toppings – fruit, candy, nuts, cookies, mochi, popping boba, brownies, cheesecake, jellies, coconut, graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate chips, etc. They have waffle cups too. I was surprised that they didn’t have any tart flavors. Hmm. They have gelato but no tart froyo??

Flavors of the day:
  • Pineapple Dole Whip
  • Raspberry Dole Whip
  • NSA Blueberries ‘n Cream
  • NSA Peaches ‘n Cream
  • Vanilla: Just had Madagascar Vanilla from Yogurtland which was much more flavorful than Peachwave’s, the texture was creamy but seemed too soft (and melted quickly)
  • Chocolate
  • Cotton candy
  • Toasted marshmallow
  • Cookies ‘n cream gelato
  • Pistachio gelato

The décor inside the store is very basic though the wall of froyo machines did have a round white and green tile. All the toppings were covered and labeled. Service was friendly. They have a rewards program. Also, on Thursdays you can get a flat rate cup for $3.99 – only you can’t fill it yourself and the cup is very small. There are a few tables & chairs set up outside if you’d like to sit and eat your froyo. I did like the Peachwave mural on the side of the building.

I drove by Menchie’s (2515 Artesia Blvd) on the way to Peachwave and I noticed it was closed during the middle of the day. Google lists it as temporarily closed, as does the Menchie’s website. I tried calling but the phone number is no longer in service. Not a good sign…I’m thinking it probably won’t reopen.

I also noticed that Yogurtland Torrance Crossroads closed earlier this year. Yogurtland Torrance Village Del Amo, Yogurtand Gardena and Manhattan Beach open at 1 PM (pretty late) and Yogurtland Redondo Beach doesn’t open till 2 PM. Peachwave opens at 1 PM Monday – Thursday. Pinkberry Torrance and Tutti Frutti Redondo Beach open at 11 AM.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Peachwave Opens First Location in California

Fro-yo girl here. Peachwave is a self-serve froyo chain founded in 2009. A new owner and CEO took over in 2015 with the goal of growing the brand. Unlike many froyo chains, Peachwave does not charge its licensees a fee or royalties. And so, the first Peachwave opened in the land of frozen yogurt (Southern California) in late July. Peachwave Calabasas is in a new strip mall that’s mostly vacant at the moment.

The space is brand new and it looked clean, bright, and spacious inside. There were 12 self-serve flavors a day with housemade waffle bowls, cup dividers, toppings, and sauces for 49 cents an ounce. The toppings bar is extensive and included fresh fruit, mochi, popping boba, cookie dough, coconut, candy, cookies, nuts, granola, marshmallows, and sauces. Toppings were labeled.

They use Stoelting soft serve machines. I found the texture to be too soft. The yogurt wasn’t special. I found the froyo flavor selection to be rather boring (e.g., chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel, cookies & cream) though they had NSA flavors, gelato, and non-dairy options. I wish the flavors were more interesting and that they had more than one tart flavor. Also, if you blindfolded me, I could not tell the difference between sweetFrog and Peachwave. Peachwave has better décor without all the Biblical quotes and the knockoff Keroppi mascots.

You can also create your own smoothie or shake, using the clear cups. They have a special, No Weigh Thursdays. Because of the excellent service, I hope they are successful in Calabasas.

According to the Peachwave website, another location is opening in downtown Los Angeles.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Westchester County, NY/CT Froyo Report

Fro-yo girl here. Westchester County is a huge county in the suburbs of New York City, covering 450 square miles. I visited various small towns but didn’t see most of the county. During my visit, I noticed that most small towns had at least one froyo shop but a fair number have closed. Peachwave was the chain that I saw the most often though some of their locations like the one in Mount Kisco, NY had recently closed (permanently).

Rural Connecticut was similar with nicer towns like Greenwich sporting a Pinkberry. The Pinkberry at Woodbury Commons Outlet Mall had just opened.

Here’s a list of froyo shops in other cities that I visited:
  • Ridgefield, CT: Peachwave, Swizzles (closed)
  • Danbury, CT: Peachwave, Yogen Fruz, 21 Taste (closed)
  • Bethel, CT: Peachwave
  • Greenwich, CT: Pinkberry, Rosie’s, Yogurt City
  • New Canaan, CT: Swirl, Peachwave (closed August 2015), Red Mango (closed August 2014)
  • Port Chester, NY: Bubbles & Berry
A 2011 article about frozen yogurt in Westchester Magazine has a list of frozen yogurt shops by the year that the shop opened. I’ve looked into which shops are still open.

Opened 2011
  • Frannie’s Goodie Shop, Mount Kisco: I visited the shop and it’s nice, they have many toppings and lots more besides frozen yogurt, including cupcakes, cookies, muffins, donuts, etc.
  • Nuts About Yogurt, Eastchester: Closed permanently
  • Pearl Yogurt, White Plains: Closed permanently
  • Yogo Berry, Tarrytown: Closed permanently
Opened 2010
  • Go Greenberry, Dobbs Ferry: Name changed to Go Greenly
  • Go Greenberry, Scarsdale: Name changed to Go Greenly
  • Red Mango, Larchmont
  • Treat Frozen Yogurt, Cross River: Closed permanently
  • Yogo Berry, Larchmont
  • Yogo Berry, Mount Kisco: Closed permanently
  • Yogo Joy, Scarsdale: Closed permanently
Opened 2009
  • Yogo Berry, Scarsdale: Closed permanently
  • Yogo Joy, Rye: Closed permanently
The majority of the shops in the article have closed for good, though new ones have opened since the article was published. I noticed most of the small towns now have juice shops.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
