Kokoroll Café to Take Over Cherry On Top Space in Pasadena

Fro-yo girl here. Cherry On Top Frozen Yogurt near PCC in Pasadena, CA closed in 2019 and the space has been vacant ever since. The landlord finally found a tenant. Kokoroll Café is moving into the Cherry On Top space.

Kokoroll Café is a Hawaiian fast-casual eatery that offers poke bowls, sushi burritos, acai bowls, and boba. Their setup looks like a froyo toppings bar. They currently have locations in Burbank, La Canada, Torrance, and Hollywood.

Cherry on Top Has Closed in Pasadena?

Fro-yo girl here. Google and Yelp report that Cherry on Top Pasadena (1299 E Green St., Pasadena, CA 91106) has closed for good. I noticed that they’ve been open sporadically for quite some time. The sign on the door says, “Sorry we’re closed today.! 10% off when next time you come. Please tell the cashier next time if you see this 10% off!!! Sorry for your inconvenience! We will try to fix everything ASAP. Enjoy the rest of your day!” But it looks like they haven’t picked up their mail in days, maybe weeks. The machines, signs, and everything else are still present. The sign makes it seem like they haven't closed for good.

Their last Facebook post was in 2015. Last review on Facebook in September 2018, last review on Yelp February 2019, and the last Instagram location tag dated February 2019..

I have to confess that I’ve forgotten that COT was still there numerous times, even though I think about frozen yogurt all the time. It didn’t seem to change and the inside looked worn and dated.

Cherry on Top’s old space in Little Tokyo (downtown Los Angeles) is still available.

Froyo Shop Graveyard: Cherry on Top in Monrovia Closes

Fro-yo girl here. Winter is a tough time for frozen yogurt shops. Demand tends to drop once it gets colder. While summer is the time that froyo shops hope to open, winter is the season that they tend to close.

Breaking news...Cherry on Top in Monrovia, CA just closed its doors for good. There was an eviction notice from the LA County Sheriff posted on their door dated January 7, 2015. The last post by Cherry on Top Monrovia on their Facebook page was on December 8, 2014.

Pasadena Fro-yo Report: Fro-yo vs. Cupcakes

Fro-yo girl here. Lovely Pasadena, the 9th largest city in Los Angeles County, has quite a few fro-yo options. While the line always seems to be the longest at 21 Choices, several fro-yo shops in town closed last year including Cantaloop, Frozziyo, and Yoguroo.

I’ve mentioned 21 Choices several times on this blog. It’s similar to Cold Stone Creamery only with fro-yo as a base and better toppings than CSC. The mix-ins are added to your fro-yo on a cold slab and mixed together.

In Old Town, other fro-yo options include Pinkberry (a smaller location), Moka Cafe, TCBY/Mrs. Fields, Jamba Juice and Cold Stone Creamery. TCBY and Cold Stone Creamery offer scoopable fro-yo. Jamba Juice has a mix-in style similar to Yogen Fruz. 21 Choices has many more mix-ins than Jamba Juice. Moka Cafe offers two flavors of fro-yo a day (not self-serve) and feels more like a coffeehouse than a fro-yo shop.

The self-serve frozen yogurt shops are closer to CalTech and Pasadena City College. Buzio’s and Cherry on Top are both self-serve fro-yo shops. Buzio’s is independently owned while Cherry on Top is a SoCal based chain. Cherry on Top also offers pretty good tea based drinks there, including boba milk tea.

The nearest Yogurtland is several miles away in Alhambra, while Menchie’s, Buster’s and Penguin’s offer fro-yo in South Pasadena.

I’m pretty sure that there are more cupcake shops in Pasadena than fro-yo places. Once you reach Alhambra, fluff ice and boba tea places seem more popular than fro-yo.

If I had to pick a favorite fro-yo shop in Pasadena, I’d choose 21 Choices. Some of the fro-yo flavors that have candy and cookies mixed in are so good! Plus the flavors are more customized. Try the Circus Animal Cookie fro-yo.

Happy Fro-yo Cinco De Mayo

Fro-yo girl here. Happy Cinco De Mayo! Did you know that fro-yo is popular in Mexico? Quite a few fro-yo chains are present in Mexico, including Yogen Fruz, Yogurtland, Tutti Frutti, and Cherry on Top.

Closer to home, why not have some dulce de leche fro-yo today? If you can't find it at your local fro-yo shop, you can always pick up Dulce De Leche Haagen Dazs Frozen Yogurt.

I haven't seen margarita, Mexican vanilla, Mexican chocolate, or Mexican cinnamon fro-yo yet but those flavors sound good, especially today.

Cherry on Top Frozen Yogurt, the Inside Swirl

Fro-yo girl here. I recently had the chance to talk to Cherry On Top HQ. I wanted to learn more about this self-serve frozen yogurt chain that I hadn't visited. They see themselves as a shop that appeals to fro-yo lovers of all ages. For example, their Margarita Sorbet was created with the adult palate in mind. And they have Pina Colada fro-yo. And even Red Bean fro-yo! Most kids would be drawn to their Peanut Butter, Cake Batter and Cookies N' Cream flavors.

To differentiate themselves, they focus on product quality and creating an atmosphere that's modern, attractive, and good for hanging out/socializing. Some locations have more seating than other for-yo shops. They like keeping things simple - the concept hasn't changed much since the beginning as they'd like to stay true to their core values. They're still expanding but want to choose locations carefully to ensure the success of their franchisees. Expanding to the Bay Area is definitely something they're considering.

An exciting development for them is their foray into co-branding with Scooter's Coffeehouse. Scooter's Coffeehouse roasts its own beans and has been voted Best of Omaha for the last nine years. The first Cherry On Top/Scooter's Coffeehouse location will open in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Cherry on Top FAQs:
* First location: 3910 E Chapman Ave, Orange, CA, opened August 2007
* 25 locations, mostly in SoCal, mostly owned by franchisees. First international location opened in Taiwan.
* Each store is independently owned and operated
* Typically 39 cents an ounce but varies
* Customer favorite flavors: Blueberry tart

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
