New Yogurtland Spoon: Mint Green

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland has new spoons! The first new spoons of 2023 are…their logo spoons in a new color, mint green. I asked the Yogurtland employee if the spoons were part of a promotion but she didn’t know. Anyway, the color is pretty…reminds me of their Lucky Irish Mint froyo flavor. I imagine we’re due for a new Yogurtland flavor in May. Could it be green?

Yu Cake Yogurt Box Cakes

Fro-yo girl here. Last year I raved about Yu Cake’s yogurt cake rolls, declaring them the best yogurt cakes ever. I had a slice for my birthday too. They have other types of yogurt cake though. This time, I tried the yogurt box cake, which comes in three flavors: berry and blueberry. Each cake is $6.95.

Yogurt box cakes have similar components as the yogurt cake rolls (i.e., yogurt cream, sponge cake) but in different proportions. With the yogurt box cake, the plain yogurt cream is on the bottom of the clear box container, topped with chunky blueberry preserves, then topped with a layer of light sponge cake, and finally finished with a layer of blueberry yogurt cream and fresh blueberries. With the cake roll, the cake surrounds two layers of yogurt cream.

Blueberry yogurt box cake: The yogurt cream is smoothy, rich, and tangy. The cake was light but didn’t have much flavor. The blueberry preserves weren’t too sweet.

I still prefer the yogurt cake roll – maybe because of the buttercream on top? It’s also prettier than the yogurt box cake.

Yu Cake Adds Yogurt Daifuku and Creamy Mochi

Fro-yo girl here. Yu Cake, my favorite cake and Asian dessert shop, just added daifuku to the menu. Twelve flavors are available, including three yogurt ones: strawberry yogurt, blueberry yogurt, and blackgrape yogurt. They weren’t on display, so you have to ask for them (they’re in the back). When I ordered it, I was told it would take 10 minutes. They’re not making them to order, so they must be defrosting them to order. I think the price was $6.50. The daifuku are large.

I didn’t eat the strawberry yogurt daifuku right away and by the time I made it home, it was an hour later.

Strawberry yogurt daifuku: The rice cake shell (glutinous rice/mochi) was very soft, thin, and chewy. Though it was blue, I don’t think the rice cake shell was flavored. The center was still frozen and seemed like tangy frozen strawberry juice. The strawberry center was surrounded by a thick layer of yogurt cream. The yogurt cream was creamy and rich. It also tasted like coconut cream. Yu Cake’s daifuku is heavier and bigger than your typical fresh strawberry daifuku. While I appreciated the fact that the yogurt cream was tangy and tasted like yogurt, the frozen center threw me. I prefer the traditional strawberry daifuku with a fresh strawberry center. Maybe if they blended the strawberries into the yogurt cream and put something not frozen in the center like fresh fruit or jelly, I would like it more. I think yogurt daifuku is worth trying but I’ll stick with their yogurt cakes.

They also added Creamy Mochi with nine flavors of mochi. None of the new Creamy Mochi flavors are yogurt.

Cream filled and even yogurt cream daifuku seem to be popular. There are several videos on YouTube that show you how to make them.

Daifuku and creamy mochi are currently only available at the Yu Cake in San Gabriel.

The Yogurt Shoppe Opens in Santa Monica, CA

Fro-yo girl here. The Menchie’s in Santa Monica at 2091 Ocean Park Blvd. was listed for sale for over a year. It was closed for a long time during the pandemic (I thought it had closed for good) but it finally reopened with a new owner. And now The Yogurt Shoppe has moved in. This is the third location for The Yogurt Shoppe; the first opened in Pacific Palisades and the second in Brentwood.

I was surprised to see that the place not only still looked like Menchie’s but still served mostly Menchie’s froyo. The Yogurt Shoppe just opened yesterday and still has Menchie's machines, cups, spoons, froyo, toppings, signs, etc. They will remodel/renovate but it hasn't happened yet.

It's self-serve and $0.79/oz. There are 14 flavors a day, sauces, and toppings (e.g., fruit, popping boba, candy, nuts, marshmallows, sprinkles, cookies, cheesecake, etc.). I imagine they'll offer prepacks in the freezer that they have on site. I found sample cups by the froyo machines. They had some of their own flavors including a creative one, Gatorade.

I think things will get even better once they bring in more of their own flavors and give the place a makeover.

Menchie’s Ocean Park first opened in 2011. Menchie’s still has a location in Santa Monica at 732 Montana Ave, though it's been for sale for months.

Froyo Prices Continue to Rise, Pinkberry Monrovia No Longer Part of Rewards Program

Fro-yo girl here. It seems like every year, froyo prices go up (at least once). Menchie’s Eagle Rock (Los Angeles) has increased the price from $0.59/oz to $0.64/oz. It’s still cheaper than Yogurtland Eagle Rock, which charges $0.67/oz. Menchie’s Eagle Rock was the cheapest self-serve place in the area. They charged $0.59/oz all of 2022.

Meanwhile, Pinkberry in Monrovia, CA is charging a $7 for a small froyo with toppings. Ouch. But Pinkberry Northridge and Studio City are even more expensive. Three years ago, a small without toppings was under $4, with $1.50 for unlimited toppings. The unlimited toppings became up to 4 toppings about two years ago, with an extra charge for the pizzelle cookie. The pizzelle cookie wasn’t extra before.

Also, Pinkberry Monrovia no longer participates in the PinkCard rewards program. Sad. They didn’t tell me about it when I mentioned wanting points.

Even the Pinkberry vending machine at The Shops at Santa Anita increased the price of a cup of froyo from $5 to $6 recently.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Whittier, CA Has Closed & Other Whittier Froyo News

Yogurtland Whittier, interior

Yogurtland Whittier, exterior

Fro-yo girl here. I hadn’t visited Whittier for a few months (not since fall 2022 when Amazon Go first opened) and it felt like time for another big flat rate cup of Pinkberry. The price hasn’t changed – it’s still $4.99, including toppings. And it’s still self-serve. Amazon Go is doing a good job with the froyo texture too! Anyway, as I was driving over to Amazon Go on Whittier Blvd., I noticed the Yogurtland sign had disappeared.

Yogurtland Whittier at the Quad has closed! The last day was December 23, 2022. They posted the following message on Facebook, “Thanks for all the love and support at our Whittier store throughout the years! Unfortunately, we have permanently closed our doors as of 12/23/22.” The shop first opened in 2012.

I took a few pictures. The froyo machines are gone but the counters, lights, and tile are still there. The exterior and interior signs were removed. I visited the location a few times. R.I.P., Yogurtland Whittier.

In other Whittier froyo news, Rockie’s is under now ownership. The shop was closed for remodeling and it reopened on March 25.

New Enlightened Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars Review

Fro-yo girl here. Enlightened just launched a line of frozen Greek yogurt bars. The healthy low-sugar yogurt bars contain 3 grams of added sugar, 5 grams of protein, prebiotics, and probiotics. Each bar is 80 calories. They’re made with real Greek yogurt. One box contains 4 bars and has a suggested retail price of $6.99. Available flavors: Caramel Brownie, Mint & Cookies.

I found both flavors at Sprouts on sale for $6.99/box (regular $7.99/box).

Mint & Cookies: The bar is the same size and shape as a Yasso Greek froyo bar, 65g. It wasn’t as green as Yasso’s Mint Chocolate Chip bar and instead of crunchy bits of chocolate, the Enlightened bar has a chocolate cookie crumble. One bar is 80 calories (vs. Yasso’s 100 calories) and has 5g of sugar vs. Yasso’s 9g. It’s just as sweet as Yasso’s because Enlightened uses monkfruit. Like Yasso Mint Chocolate Chip, Enlightened’s Mint & Cookies has a refreshing mint flavor and a light, creamy texture. The monkfruit gave it a sweet aftertaste, sweeter than you’d find with regular sugar. But the mint flavor is strong and it manages to hide the monkfruit for the most part. It’s pretty good, comparable to Yasso’s Mint Chocolate Chip though I do prefer Yasso’s version. Neither Enlightened or Yasso bars taste like frozen yogurt.

Enlightened offers several lines of healthier, lower sugar frozen dessert bars, frozen dessert pints, and desserts.

Find Enlightened using the store locator feature on their website.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Sweetkiwi Whipped Greek Froyo Updated Review

Raspberry Frose & Vanilla

Chocolate Hazelnut

Cookies & Cream

Sweetkiwi

Sweetkiwi

Fro-yo girl here. A few months ago, I found Sweetkiwi Whipped Greek Froyo at Ralph’s and reviewed the Cookies & Cream flavor. I was surprised that the froyo was whipped because the texture was so dense. Someone at Sweetkiwi reached out to me and sent me a fresh batch of froyo in exchange for an honest review. They told me that they fixed their production issues and created a new formula that makes it faster to thaw and helps it maintain the whipped texture.

Sweetkiwi recently appeared on Shark Tank and received a $250,000 investment from Robert Herjavec in exchange for a 7.1% stake, plus 5% in advisory shares. The deal values the company at over $2.4 million. The founder’s story was impressive. Ehime Eigbe started the leading chain of froyo shops in Nigeria and when she moved to the US, started Sweetkiwi, a better for you packaged frozen yogurt. Sweetkiwi says the product is “the yogurt lovers’ frozen yogurt with the crave-able combination of tart & sweet you expect from premium Greek yogurt. Sweetkiwi is uniquely formulated with carefully selected nutrient-dense ingredients that support gut health, nutrient absorption, and wellness.” The froyo is made with locally sourced milk from grassfed cows.

I tried the four flavors of Sweetkiwi and here's what I thought of each.

  • Cookies & Cream: This is the flavor that I tried last year. It looked different from last year and it tasted much better too. The color wasn’t as yellow and the texture wasn’t as dense and chewy. It tasted fresher. The yogurt flavor is surprisingly strong and surprisingly tangy. I could see some chocolate cookie crumble but the flavor of the tangy yogurt was stronger than the flavor of the cookies. The texture was smooth and creamy. It was sweeter than I expected. Verdict: pretty good but I think the tanginess of yogurt goes better with fruit flavors. One serving, 2/3 cup, of Cookies & Cream froyo is 120 calories, 1g total fat, 6g fiber, 16g total sugars, and 9g protein.
  • Vanilla had a nice vanilla and cream flavor and was also slightly tangy. It smelled lovely and there were visible vanilla bean specks. I think it would be really good in a smoothie or paired with fresh fruit or even more decadent desserts like cake and pie.
  • Chocolate Hazelnut: I was surprised by how much of the hazelnut flavor came through but the chocolate flavor was harder to detect. The tang was pleasant. The texture was thick and creamy.
  • Raspberry Frose: my favorite because I love the combination of berries and yogurt, both are tangy but not sour. It’s fruity and creamy, with a strong yogurt flavor.

I can see why Sweetkiwi is the yogurt lover’s froyo. The flavor of the yogurt really comes through, which isn’t the case for other Greek froyo products found at supermarkets (e.g., Yasso, Enlightened’s Greek froyo products, etc.). I recommend thawing the frozen yogurt for 15 – 20 minutes before consumption. The product was very firm right out of the freezer.

Sweetkiwi whipped Greek froyo is rich in probiotics, fiber, and immune-boosting superfoods and it's low in calories.

You can find Sweetkiwi at select locations of Whole Foods, Kroger, Walmart, and more. To find Sweetkiwi near you, use their product locator: Or you can order Sweetkiwi from their website.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Pinkberry Flavor, White Peach Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. Happy Froyo Easter! I always have froyo on Easter and this year, I went to Pinkberry to get the new spring flavor, White Peach(tart) froyo.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a peach tart froyo, so long that I forgot how good it could be. Pinkberry first introduced a peach tart froyo back in March 2012. Thirteen years ago! I haven’t had that flavor in so many years. The new White Peach tart froyo is different though it’s hard to remember the original Pinkberry peach tart flavor. White peach is a little more floral and delicate than a regular yellow peach.

White peach froyo was fairly tart (moderate on the Pinkberry tartness scale). It seemed a little denser and icier than usual, but that could have been a machine issue at the shop that I went to. Recommended toppings: raspberries, granola, mochi.

Pinkberry recommends topping White Peach frozen yogurt with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and strawberry peach puree. I believe the strawberry peach puree is now.

White Peach frozen yogurt is available in participating stores until June 22.

Pinkberry also has two new shaken teas for the spring: Dragon Berry and Peach Mango.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Tucson's Froyo History

BTO Yogurt, Tucson, Source: Yelp

Campus Candy, Tucson, Source: Yelp

Fro-yo girl here. In my previous post, I wrote about the froyo shops that are currently operating in Tucson, Arizona. Today, I’m sharing my list of former froyo shops in Tucson. Keep in mind that the older the froyo shop, the more difficult it is to find information.

History of Froyo in Tucson

TCBY, Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe (later Sundaze), and Yogurt Station/Yogurt Delight/Frozen Delight were the old school counter-serve froyo shops in town. Most of the froyo shops that opened after 2008 were self-serve. BTO Yogurt, a self-serve froyo concept, which was headquartered in Tucson, opened seven locations in Tucson. They also opened locations in other states. The first BTO Yogurt opened in Tucson in 2009 and the last one to close closed in 2019. They wanted to be the place for self-serve froyo in Tucson. Despite the abundance of BTO Yogurt branches, national chains like Red Mango, Tutti Frutti, Peachwave, Yogurtland, Orange Leaf, and U-Swirl joined the froyo fray. Surprisingly, Tucson has never had a Menchie’s.

There was a cluster of froyo shops by the University of Arizona but none remain. UA also had a Reis & Irvy’s froyo vending machine.

Costco, which has three locations in greater Tucson, used to carry froyo at their snack bar but they switched to soft serve ice cream. IKEA, another common source for froyo, does not have a location in Tucson.

Here’s the list of former froyo shops, in alphabetical order:
  1. BTO Yogurt, E. Sunrise Dr., Tucson, was the first BTO branch in Tucson. The shop opened in 2009 and closed in 2012. It was self-serve and offered 16 froyo flavors a day for $0.39/oz.
  2. BTO Yogurt, 8245 N. Silverbell Road, Tucson, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2015 and closed in 2019.
  3. BTO Yogurt, 8295 N. Cortaro Road, Tucson was the second branch that was open in 2011.
  4. BTO Yogurt, 8650 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson, was open from 2012 – 2013.
  5. BTO Yogurt, 2721 E Speedway Blvd in Tucson, was open from 2009 – 2014.
  6. BTO Yogurt, 9040 E. Valencia Rd., Ste. 172, Tucson, was open at Rita Ranch from 2013 – 2016.
  7. BTO Yogurt, 9725 North Thornydale Rd. # 139, Tucson, might have been open from 2012 - 2014.
  8. Campus Candy, 910 E University Blvd #5049, Tucson, was a chain of candy and self-serve froyo shops located near college campuses, including this one next to University of Arizona. The shop opened in 2011 with over 400 varieties of candy. At the time, it was the third Campus Candy in the US. It may have closed in 2019.
  9. Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe, 4777 E Sunrise Dr #139, Tucson, was founded in 1987 and had multiple counter-serve locations in Tucson. I’m not sure how many locations existed and I’m not sure of the order in which they opened. This location on Sunrise Dr. became Sundaze in 2002.
  10. Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe, 3601 East Broadway Blvd, Tucson, was part of the older froyo craze in Tucson. It was inside the El Con Mall.
  11. Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe, 923 E University Blvd, Tucson, was part of the older froyo craze in Tucson. This branch was across the street from the University of Arizona.
  12. The City Yogurt (1217 W Irvington Rd, Ste 141, Tucson) was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2011. They offered 14 froyo flavors at a time and may have closed in 2014 or 2015. It was the only froyo shop in the South Tucson area.
  13. Kona Beri, 9155 E Tanque Verde Rd, Tucson, opened in 2010 with a Hawaiian atmosphere and a self-serve format. The shop closed in 2016.
  14. Malibu Frozen Yogurt, 825 E University Blvd, Ste 161, Tucson opened in 2010 near the University of Arizona campus and the last review was in 2012. It was related to the Malibu Yogurt in Malibu, California. They also served ice cream and coffee. It was counter-serve.
  15. Orange Leaf, 4644 E Fort Lowell Rd, Tucson, might have opened in 2010 or early 2011, before U-Swirl opened their first location. The last check-in on Foursquare was in 2012. The shop was self-serve.
  16. The Parlour, 611 N 4th Ave Tucson, was a self-serve froyo shop that charged by the cup, not by weight. The kid’s cup was just $2. The Parlor opened in 2013 and closed in 2015. It had the same ownership as Magpies Gourmet Pizza next door. Magpies on 4th Avenue is still open.
  17. Planet Smoothie, 7315 North Oracle Rd, Suite 108, Tucson, was open from 2011 – 2018. This location even had self-serve froyo.
  18. Planet Smoothie, 11025 Carolina Place Parkway, D-29, Tucson, was open in 2015 and may have had self-serve froyo.
  19. Red Mango, 4758 E Sunrise Dr, Tucson, may have opened in 2012 and closed in 2013. It was self-serve.
  20. Red Mango, 1031 N Park Ave #123, Tucson, was on the University of Arizona campus but I couldn’t find any reviews or information about the location.
  21. Reis & Irvy’s installed their froyo vending machine at the University of Arizona at the Slot Canyon Café in 2018. I’m not sure how long it was there but I doubt that it’s still there.
  22. TCBY, 7401 N La Cholla Blvd #155, Tucson, was inside the Foothills Mall. The location closed in 2018. It’s unclear when it first opened.
  23. TCBY, 7960 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson existed but I’m not sure when it was in business.
  24. Twirls, 3587 E Broadway Blvd, Ste 115, Tucson, was a self-serve froyo shop inside El Con Mall. It replaced U-Swirl in 2016 and closed in 2019.
  25. U-Swirl Frozen Yogurt, 3587 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, was a self-serve froyo shop and part of a national froyo chain. Looking at social media posts, it seems to have opened in 2011 and closed in 2016. This was the first U-Swirl in Tucson.
  26. U-Swirl, 3601 East Broadway Blvd, Tucson, was located inside the El Con Mall. I’m not sure when it opened or closed but my guess is that it opened shortly after the first U-Swirl in Tucson.
  27. Yogurt Delight, 1101 N Wilmot Rd #107, Tucson, was a counter-serve froyo shop that may have opened in 2010 and closed in 2015/2016. It became Frozen Delight.
  28. Yogurt Station, 1101 N Wilmot Rd #107, Tucson, was a counter-serve froyo shop that may have opened in 2009. The last tweet was in 2010. It became Yogurt Delight.
  29. Yogurt Swirl, 4500 N Oracle Rd, Tucson, was a self-serve froyo shop inside Tucson Mall that may have opened in 2017 and closed in 2021. It seems to have closed in 2018 or 2019.
  30. Yogurtland, 2800 N Campbell Ave, Tucson, opened in 2013 and closed "temporarily" during pandemic in 2020. It never reopened. There are other Yogurtland locations in the Phoenix area (in Avondale, Chandler, and Mesa.

Did I miss any Tucson froyo spots? Let me know.

2023 Froyo Scene in Tucson, Arizona

Frozen Delight, Tucson

Pinkberry, Tucson

Fro-yo girl here. Greater Tucson has over 1 million residents and it’s in a desert, so it’s a good place for froyo. In Tucson, there are two old school, counter-serve froyo shops, Frozen Delight and Sundaze. Tutti Frutti, Peachwave and Froyo Fresh are self-serve froyo shops while Pinkberry represents the counter-serve, high-end froyo in town.

Current Froyo Shops in Tucson

  • Froyo Fresh, 8245 N Silverbell Rd #127, Tucson, is a self-serve shop that changed ownership in 2019. They also have hard ice cream and ice cream rolls. Froyo Fresh opened in 2018.
  • Frozen Delight, 1101 N Wilmot Rd #107, Tucson, was founded in 1990, making it the oldest existing froyo shop in Tucson. The local family-owned business offers counter-serve froyo, a case of Thrifty ice cream, boba drinks, milkshakes, and churros. They have non-fat froyo, low lactose and low sugar options. The froyo was good but the kind you find in many froyo shops. Frozen Delight seems to have changed names a few times. It was called Yogurt Delight and Yogurt Station.
  • Peachwave, 12125 N Oracle Rd, Oro Valley, is a self-serve froyo chain that opened in June 2021. It looks like one of the better Peachwave locations with fresh baked cookies and some interesting local toppings. My friend who lives nearby said it was okay. Peachwave is based in Holland, Michigan and has been licensing their brand since 2009. I’ve been to a few Peachwave locations in California and they’re decent but the flavors are standard.
  • Pinkberry, 3820 W River Rd Suite 140, Tucson, opened in 2018 in Marana Marketplace. This counter-serve location carries six froyo flavors a day and also offers made-to-order smoothies. I like their tart flavors better than their sweet flavors. Their original tart was the flavor that started the second froyo craze.
  • Sundaze, 4777 E Sunrise Dr #139, Tucson, is closed on Sundays. Go figure. The family-owned business opened in 2002, taking over Carol’s Yogurt Shoppe. Sundaze offers counter-serve froyo, Thrifty Ice Cream, smoothies, shakes, malts, and yogurt pies. The ownership changed about two years ago.
  • Tutti Frutti, 5870 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, opened inside Park Place Mall in 2010. It’s self-serve and part of an international chain of froyo shops.

I found so many closed froyo shops in Tucson that I’m writing about them in a separate post.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
