Former Pinkberry Location at the Original Farmers Market to Be Replaced by Grocers’ Gateway
Fro-yo girl here. I haven’t been to the Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles in about a year and I missed the fact that Pinkberry closed in late January 2018. Sad. The Original Farmers Market has changed so much lately, though a few oldies are still there. Bob’s Coffee and Doughnuts better not close. Gill’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor, which had frozen yogurt, closed last year after 80 years at the market. It’s been replaced with a new ice cream shop called Local Ice. They had a soft serve machine but it was being used for soft serve ice cream.
The area where Pinkberry was is hidden by a tent or something. That section is being remodeled. The new Grocers’ Gateway section will open this fall with “exciting artisan grocery merchants and a fresh yet retro exterior look." Construction of the new section began in February. There was a fire at the Little Spain restaurant a few years ago in that area, so the idea had long been in the works to remodel that area.
I took a picture of where Pinkberry used to be. You can still get froyo at the Original Farmers Market at Bennett’s. Or if you walk over to the Grove, you can get froyo at Haagen Dazs and Pressed Freeze from Pressed Juicery.
You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Foxy’s Thoughtful Ice Creams Review
Fro-yo girl here. Way back in 2012, I reviewed Foxy’s Pash Premium Frozen Yogurt: http://froyogirl.blogspot.com/2012/09/foxys-pash-frozen-yogurt-review.html
Foxy’s Pash was positioned as a low calorie, low sugar, lowfat guilt free, all-natural, premium frozen yogurt. In reality, their product did not have a premium taste, but at least it did taste natural. I found several flavors to be bland and icy. My pints of Foxy’s sat in my freezer for awhile and I finally wound up throwing them out. I wasn’t eager to try anything by Foxy’s again.
At some point around 2014-2015, the founders of Foxy’s decided to rebrand and relaunch a new product, Foxy’s Thoughtful Ice Creams, in 2016. The new look was cleaner and more modern. The old look reminded me of 1950’s American teenagers). The new flavors and packaging emphasized the quality of ingredients they use. The new positioning was as a healthy, indulgent (not lowfat), ice cream with less sugar, probiotics, and prebiotics. Compared to a typical frozen yogurt, Foxy’s has higher fat and less sugar. Compared to ice cream, Foxy’s has no eggs, less sugar, prebiotics, and probiotics. In fact, it has at least 1 billion probiotics per serving.
I decided to try Foxy’s Thoughtful Ice Creams since I found them at Grocery Outlet at a deep discount, $2.49 a pint. According to the sign, they retail for $6.49 elsewhere. Grocery Outlet had three flavors: Rather Thoughtful Vanilla, Oregon Cherry Vanilla, and Uncle Mike’s Double Chocolate.
- Oregon Cherry Vanilla: When I took the lid off, I didn’t see any cherries. I did encounter cherry pieces later, but this flavor needs a cherry jam or more cherry flavor. It tastes like vanilla with a tiny hit of cherries. I didn’t miss the sugar because they also added agave inulin. It tasted as sweet as other ice creams. The texture seemed firmer and a bit icier, probably because it's egg-free. The flavor was mild and pleasant though the vanilla flavor wasn’t strong either. Foxy’s Thoughtful Ice Creams tastes better than Foxy’s Pash, though I’d still like more flavor.
Ingredients: Milk, cream, sugar (cane), nonfat milk powder, cherry halves (cherries, sugar), cherry pieces (cherries, sugar [cane]), cherry juice concentrate, natural flavor), vanilla extract, organic agave inulin, Xanthan gum, locust bean gum, guar gum, Probiotics: L. Acidophilus, L. Plantarum, L. Salivarius, L. Rhamnosus, B. Lactis, and B. Biffidum.
The available flavors are:
- Salted Caramel & English Toffee
- Uncle Mike’s Double Chocolate
- California Pistachio
- Oregon Cherry Vanilla
- Rocky Road Less Travelled
- Rather Thoughtful Vanilla
Foxy’s is mainly available on West Coast but can be purchased online for $8.99/each.

Ice Cream Expo in Japan
Fro-yo girl here. I stumbled upon the Ice Cream Expo at the Ginza Mitsukoshi on my recent trip to Japan. The event was hosted by Japan Ice Cream Maniac Association. Over 100 kinds of ice cream from different regions in Japan were carefully selected by the association to be sold at the expo.
The Ice Cream Expo was held from 4/25 – 5/7/2018. It’s not the froyo expo, but I thought that they might have frozen yogurt. I asked the information booth, but alas, there was no frozen yogurt.
I’ll assume that the Ice Cream Expo represents what’s new in ice cream in Japan right now. Most of the signs were in Japanese, so I wasn’t sure what was being offered. The vendors, representing ice cream vendors throughout Japan, had booths on the 7th and 9th floor of Mitsukoshi.
What’s new?
- Manhattan Roll Ice Cream (@manhattanroll) has brought Thai ice cream rolls to Tokyo. You can find the shop near Harajuku Station.
- Cold Stone Creamery brought decorated popsicles to the expo.
- Tsujiri, the green tea specialist, was there with its retail café concept called Yuwa. The specialty is matcha green tea soft serve.
- Aki Group Farm is known for its veggie ice cream flavors like grilled eggplant, roasted sweet potato, and pumpkin. The roasted eggplant ice cream has won various food awards.
- The Warm Tech Spoon is a warm ice cream spoon that makes it easier and more pleasant to eat ice cream. It’s made not out of metal or wood but with a high tech material with very high thermal conductivity.
I wish I could have read the signs to understand more of what I saw! You can read more about some of the featured ice creams in this article in the Ginza Mitsukoshi News.
I didn't see Kanazawa Ice, the Japanese ice cream that doesn't melt for hours.
Also, I was able to try Milk Cream Craft in the Ginza Mitsukoshi food hall. Milk Craft Cream is the first shop in Japan to specialize in fresh cream products. The cream comes from Kushiro subprefecture in Hokkaido. I think this stall at Ginza Mitsukoshi was a pop-up, but they have shops elsewhere. The first one was in Shibuya in 2017. It’s been wildly popular, with 30,000 customers in the first month.
* Milky soft serve (500 yen, or $4.53): The soft serve comes on a plain cake cone. The cone was fresh and crispy but otherwise standard. The swirl looked different than the typical soft cream swirl because they didn’t use the end caps that go on the soft serve machine nozzles. Swirls look better when end caps are used. The portion looked smaller than the other soft cream cones I had in Japan. It did taste different from the other milk soft creams I had – the texture was smooth, thick and creamy but the flavor had a milkier/cream quality. It wasn’t too sweet and it had a lot of flavor for plain milk and cream.
According to the Milk Craft Cream website, they created the “ultimate blend ratio” after more than 100 prototypes that blended different cream and milk fat content.

Go Greek Thousand Oaks to Open on May 29
Fro-yo girl here. There aren’t a lot of details yet, but I heard that Go Greek The Oaks Mall will open next week, on Tuesday, May 29. It’s on the second floor, the outdoor part, by Vans. Nothing official has been announced yet, so it’s probably a soft opening, with a grand opening to be announced later.
Go Greek will offer fresh Greek yogurt, self-serve Greek frozen yogurt, and Greek coffee.
Update: They had a soft opening and special sampling on May 26 from 2-5 PM.

Lotte Double Dip Yogurt Pepero Review
One box contains two servings in separate packets. A serving is one pack, 130 calories, 7g total fat, 11g sugars, 16g total carbohydrate, and 2g protein.
* Double Dip Yogurt Pepero: One dip is milk flavored and the second dip is yogurt flavored. The double dipping makes the coating twice as thick as your average Pocky/Pepero. The cookie part is similar to your typical Pocky/Pepero: crunchy, not very sweet, like a pretzel but not as crunchy. The dips are much sweeter than the biscuit cookie stick. The dips are sweet and creamy. The flavor was pretty good. The yogurt dip had a slightly tangy Yakult taste which wasn’t strong enough to be unpleasant (I don’t like Yakult). It did taste a little powdery but I still liked it. Did I like it better than regular Pocky or Pepero? No, but Double Dip Yogurt is a nice alternative to white chocolate.
Ingredients: Vegetable cream I (vegetable oil, sugar, mixed milk powder, lactose, dextrin, lecithin, Greek yogurt powder, citric acid, artificial yogurt flavor, paprika color), vegetable cream II (vegetable oil, sugar, mixed milk powder, lactose, dextrin, artificial milk flavor, artificial sweet flavor), wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, sweetened condensed milk, grain product (whole meal, non-glutinous rice, glutinous rice), liquid whole egg, processed whole milk powder (whey powder, butter oil, lactose, palm oil, milk cream, sodium caseinate, potassium phosphate dibasic, glycerin esters of fatty acides, artificial milk flavor), acidity regulator (ammonium bicarbonate, sodium phosphate (tribasic), sodium bicarbonate), malt extract, salt, fructose corn syrup, artificial flavor (perm bread flavor), vanilla flavor (vanilla extract, proptlene glycol, vanillin, decalactone), papain, yeast.
The list of ingredients is crazy long!
You can purchase Pepero Double Dip Yogurt online at http://kpoptown.com/food/43678-lotte-double-dip-yogurt-pepero-50g.html

Clover Whole Milk Greek Yogurt
Fro-yo girl here. I spotted Clover Whole Milk Greek Yogurt at Sprouts. Their yogurt is organic and made with milk from Northern California dairies. The Greek yogurt is strained and the flavors are blended into it. This product was labeled as new by Sprouts. It retails for $2.19 and I found it on sale for $1.99. One cup is 5.3 oz.
* Vanilla bean: This was really good! I could see the vanilla bean specks throughout the yogurt. The sweetness was pleasant; it wasn’t overly sweet. It tasted fresh and natural. The texture was creamy and smooth. The full fat made it satisfying but not heavy. It's more mild than tangy.
Available flavors: Plain, Vanilla Bean, Blueberry, Honey, Raspberry
One serving has 150 calories, 4.5g total fat, 15g total carbohydrates, 13g total sugars and 11g protein. And it has live and active cultures.
Ingredients (vanilla bean): Cultured pasteurized organic whole milk, organic sugar, pectin, organic vanilla extrat, natural flavor, locust bean gum, organic lemon juice concentrate, organic vanilla beans.
5 out of 5 stars.

Bio-K+ Review
Bio-K+ Original, a fermented dairy drink, was created in 1996 and could only be found in the Montreal area at that time. Later, it was approved for use by hospitals and prescribed to over 40,000 patients taking antibiotics. A published clinical study found the product was effective for reducing diarrhea linked to antibiotics and the also had the potential of reducing diarrhea linked to Clostridium difficile (Beausoleil et al.). Bio-K+ is the #1 recommended probiotic by doctors across Canada.
Over the years, Bio-K+ added other products: capsules and new flavors of drinks, including non-dairy and kids’ versions. I’ve seen Bio-K+ at quite a few stores, including Whole Foods, Gelson’s, Sprouts, and Erewhon. It is carried by some pharmacies at well.
Bio-K+ is not a yogurt. It’s a probiotic supplement that has 50 billion CFU in each bottle (the equivalent to eating 50 yogurts). One drink is 3.5 fl oz.
While I enjoyed Bio-K+ I never regularly consumed it because one small bottle was $5 or more. I don’t have digestive issues and I’m not taking antibiotics. My gut health is probably pretty good. I think Bio-K+ boosts your immune system too, which is something we could all use. It’s not clear whether healthy people should take probiotics though.
Bio-K+ recently added a few non-dairy options: Blueberry (fermented rice), Mango (fermented soy), Coconut (fermented pea & hemp). The coconut flavor is a Whole Foods exclusive in the US.
I tried the flavored drink flavors that are for adults and here’s what I thought of each. I didn’t try the Coconut flavor.
- Strawberry (fermented dairy): This was the best flavor. It was tangy, creamy, and tasted like real strawberries and dairy. 4 out of 5 stars.
- Mango (fermented soy): This was pleasant though the mango flavor wasn’t that strong. There was a hint of soy flavor that I liked. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
- Blueberry (fermented rice): I could barely taste the blueberries. The funky fermented flavor was super strong. The drink was very sour. It contains less sugar than the Mango and Strawberry flavors. It was also thinner and not as creamy. I can’t imagine drinking much of this, and I like sour flavors. 1.5 out of 5 stars.
People like to add Bio-K+ to smoothies, overnight oats, and chia puddings.

Yoga-urt New Spring Flavor: Beautiful Blueberry
Blueberries can be a bit tangy, but this flavor wasn’t tangy. It wasn’t overly sweet either. The aftertaste was pleasant and clean. I could see bits of blueberry skin in the froyo. It was thick and creamy, but not heavy. I would recommend getting it with Strawberry Serenity, Tantric Tart, or Vanilla Harmony froyo.
Yoga-urt’s probiotic, dairy-free soft serve is hand-crafted, made from scratch, organic, kosher, and soy free. It tastes fresh, handmade, and way better than your typical soft serve/froyo.

Future Froyo Shop Picture: Peachwave Calabasas
Fro-yo girl here. I ran into quite a few Peachwave locations in New England a few years ago. The first location opened in Oklahoma in 2009. The chain was sold in 2015 to a two Peachwave shop owners/licensees, Boyd Feltman and his silent partner. At the time, it had 72 locations. They’ve never had a location in California, to my knowledge. That’s about to change.
Peachwave has plans to open in Calabasas at 5755 Las Virgenes Blvd. according to the Peachwave Calabasas Instagram account. Peachwave’s website lists the address as 5733 Las Virgenes Blvd. The shop will be part of a new shopping center called Las Virgenes Village and it looks like it will be in Suite B at 5755 Las Virgenes Blvd. The door was open when I stopped by and there were a few construction workers inside. This is a brand new strip mall with very few open businesses.
Currently, there are two frozen yogurt shops in Calabasas: Menchie’s and Golden Spoon.
Peachwave is one of the older self-serve frozen yogurt chains. It has a similar look and feel to Orange Leaf. Each shop is privately owned by a licensee/store operator. No royalties are collected on sales each month. Corporate provides marketing support, such as poster designs for new summer flavors, social marketing, and consulting services for how to market locally.
You can follow Peachwave Calabasas on Instagram at @peachwave_calabasas and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/peachwavecalabasas/
It looks like they expect to open in June.

Future Froyo Shop Pictures: Go Greek Thousand Oaks
I remember a few froyo shops at the Oaks Mall, including Bericup by the food court and Sweet XO upstairs. Menchie’s opened in 2012 and it’s still there by the movie theater. There was another shop called Moyo Yogurt that I never got a chance to try. Haagen Dazs had a froyo machine for awhile, but it’s no longer there.
Go Greek will offer fresh Greek yogurt, self-serve Greek frozen yogurt, and Greek coffee.

Rave Organics Café Opens in Newbury Park, CA
Fro-yo girl here. Rave Organics Café opened its doors for a soft launch on April 18. The new café in Newbury Park specializes in organic pizza, frozen yogurt, smoothies, sandwiches, breakfast, & other healthy meals. There are vegan options as well.
I stopped by to try the organic frozen yogurt, which is sourced from a local company, Cloud Top. When I walked in, the place felt empty. The display case which is maybe meant for pastries, was empty. The décor felt unfinished too. They’re still in soft opening mode even though they opened two weeks ago. There were no printed menus. The upstairs area is supposed to be calming but it just felt unfinished to me.
The frozen yogurt machines are on the right. They have four Taylor soft serve machines. The frozen yogurt is organic and they had eight flavors, four of these were vegan and none were tart. It is self-serve but the price is a flat rate $5.99 for a small and $7.99 for a medium. The price includes toppings. The small cup was huge (16 oz?) and definitely shareable. Ask for sample cups.
The toppings section was very small because they only offer organic, healthy toppings and they’re still in soft opening mode. They had nuts, granola, coconut, peanut butter mixed with honey, and chocolate chips.
The two vegan flavors that I tried were smooth, dense and creamy. The horchata flavor was very mild, so it tasted more like coconut froyo, but I enjoyed it because it wasn’t as sweet and it had a clean aftertaste. The chai spices were more noticeable though not overpowering. I noticed the toppings were less sweet too. If you are vegan or care about eating organic or concerned about sugar, give this frozen yogurt a try.
Froyo flavors:
- Old fashioned vanilla
- Dutch chocolate
- Cheesecake
- Salted caramel
- Pomegranate-berry (vegan)
- Strawberry (vegan)
- Chai (vegan)
- Horchata (vegan)
The cups and utensils are compostable. There is plenty of seating. I think the only other froyo place in Newbury Park is Tutti Frutti.
I wish the frozen yogurt were sold by the ounce or not self-serve because I didn't want a huge amount. It's supposed to be a healthy eatery, so smaller portions would be appreciated. Froyo would be a nice dessert or snack if the portion were a lot smaller. For example, they could offer meal deals that include a drink and froyo. Yes, I could put less in the cup but then it doesn't feel like getting your money's worth.
You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s New May Flavors: Nutter Butter and Cold Brew Coffee
Fro-yo girl here. It’s a new month which means that Menchie’s has launched new promotions. First, there’s a new limited edition cup design, featuring the movie, Show Dogs. It looks like the Open Road International and Riverstone Pictures movie is about real dogs, not animated ones. The movie has a release date of May 18, 2018. Seven dogs are featured on the cup.
And there are two new froyo flavors: Peanut Butter Cookie made with Nutter Butter cookie pieces and Cold Brew Coffee made with real cold brew coffee.
* Peanut butter cookie made with Nutter Butter cookie pieces froyo: I could not see cookie pieces and the cookie flavor got lost, but the peanut butter flavor is strong. It’s on the sweet side even for peanut butter yogurt. The texture was creamy and smooth. Recommended toppings: mini Nutter Butter cookies, peanut butter sauce, Butterfingers. It’s lowfat.
* Cold Brew Coffee froyo: The coffee flavor is much stronger than their other coffee flavors, so I definitely enjoyed it. It has caffeine, yay! Cold Brew Coffee froyo is lowfat and is made with no artificial flavors or colors and no high fructose corn syrup. Recommended toppings: Special Dark dark chocolate chips, almonds, Heath
This is a good month. I approve of the new flavors!

Pinkberry Introduces Green Tea Lemonade Frozen Yogurt, Layered Lemonades
Fro-yo girl here. Fan favorite Pinkberry Meyer Lemon frozen yogurt is exiting, to make room for the brand new summer Pinkberry flavor, Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt. I’m excited that it’s a tart flavor. Remember when Green Tea was one of the original Pinkberry flavors in the early days? Pinkberry Green Tea and Lemonade were both good frozen yogurt flavors, so my expectations were high for Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt.
Pinkberry recommends trying their signature combination, A Perfect Matcha. A Perfect Matcha features Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt with pineapple, mango, and matcha powder. I love matcha powder and I haven’t sprinkled it on frozen yogurt in a very long time.
There’s also a new line of beverages, Layered Lemonades – in Strawberry or Green Tea flavors.
- Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt: It’s really good! If you liked Pinkberry’s green tea flavor, you’ll love Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt. It tastes like their old Green Tea flavor, only tangier. The green tea flavor is definitely present and the lemonade complements it well without overpowering it. It’s tangy, light, and delicious. I was sad that the matcha powder wasn’t available. Recommended toppings: Raspberries, mochi, almonds, matcha powder.
Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt is available from April 27 – June 21, 2018. Layered Lemonades are available from April 27 – August 9, 2018. I went to Pinkberry Americana on April 27, but they didn’t have Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt. I noticed that several Pinkberry locations in this area, including Pinkberry Americana, don’t offer the new drinks, but the drinks are far less interesting to me than the frozen yogurt.
Thanks, Pinkberry, for continuing to come out with TART frozen yogurt flavors!!!
P.S. The flavor finder feature on the Pinkberry website is inaccurate. I kept checking it to see if Green Tea Lemonade frozen yogurt was available and it was for a few days, but the website didn’t list it.

Montebello, CA Froyo Updates
Fro-yo girl here. I was recently in Montebello, CA and I noticed that Froba, the froyo shop inside the laundromat, no longer serves frozen yogurt. The toppings dispensers were empty and the sign on the door said, “Frozen yogurt will remain out of service until further notice.” The shop hasn’t closed; they still serve coffee and boba drinks. Or is it called Boba Day? There was more than one shop sign, so it’s confusing. I did go there once and the frozen yogurt was okay. They carried Dannon YoCream.
Also, Frozen Yogurt and Deli has closed. Their space is still vacant. I went there once and it was okay. They carried froyo from Honey Hill Farms.
The remaining froyo shops in Montebello are Tutti Frutti and Yogurtland, both at the Shops at Montebello. I don’t like that Yogurtland location though. It’s very expensive and it’s smaller, so the selection is limited.
You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
