New Strawberry Yogurt Mille Crepe Cake From Yu Cake

Fro-yo girl here. It was love at first bite when I first tried Yu Cake’s Blueberry Yogurt Cake Roll in 2022. I was impressed enough to want to try all their yogurt cakes, so I tried the yogurt box cake and the raspberry yogurt cake. The Blueberry Yogurt Cake was still the best.

Recently, they introduced a new yogurt cake, the Strawberry Yogurt Mille Crepe Cake ($9.75/slice, $97 for a whole 8” cake). It’s flavored with yogurt powder. Like all Yu Cakes, the cake looked beautiful with thin layers of crepe and cream. There was also a thicker layer of cream with strawberry bits and a strawberry gelee layer.

Strawberry Yogurt Mille Crepe Cake: This was my least favorite Yu Cake to date. The cake had one texture – soft and creamy, but it also had a strange gummy texture. The cream didn’t have much flavor though I did appreciate that the cake was not too sweet. I could also taste a bit of the yogurt and the fresh strawberry flavor. The strawberry gelee was slightly tangy. Something about the texture of the crepes and cream wasn’t quite right.

Yu Cake closed the Rosemead location, so I went to the one in San Gabriel. They also didn’t have the other yogurt cakes that I tried in the past.

Yogurt Cakes at Harucake

Fro-yo girl here. I recently visited Harucake, a Korean cake bakery in LA’s Koreatown, and to my surprise, they had a few types of yogurt cake. There were two types of yogurt cake: summer peach (vanilla genoise, homemade peach compote, lemon yogurt cream) and green grape (vanilla genoise, lemon yogurt cream, fresh green grape).

Green grape yogurt cake ($14/slice): The vanilla genoise cake was light, fluffy, and tender. There were three layers of cake and two layers of milk cream. The entire cake is also covered in milk cream. The grapes were sweet and fresh. The lemon yogurt is subtle and actually tastes like yogurt. It was a big slice of cake but because it was light and not too sweet, it was easy to finish. The flavors are subtle and the cake delicate.

Harucake makes the cutest minimalist, low sugar (Asian sweet), organic milk cream cakes. The cake flavors (e.g., chocolate earl grey, strawberry milk cream, mugwort injeolmi) rotate but I believe all the cakes feature genoise (sponge cake) and layers of milk cream.

Is Harucake’s yogurt cake better than Yu Cake’s blueberry yogurt cake? Well, they’re different. Harucake’s cake is softer. Yu Cake gives you more yogurt cream and has more going on. Both are lower in sugar than your typical cake. I’d have a hard time choosing between Harucake and Yu Cake.

Yu Cake Raspberry Yogurt Cake Review

Fro-yo girl here. I know I declared Yu Cake’s blueberry yogurt cake roll the best yogurt cake ever last year, but I hadn’t tried all their yogurt cakes at that time. Since October 2022, I’ve tried Yu Cake's mixed berry yogurt cake roll and blueberry yogurt box cake. I recently tried the raspberry yogurt cake and it’s good but the blueberry yogurt cake roll is still my favorite.

The raspberry yogurt cake slice ($8.75) is a traditional looking slice from a round, layered cake. There are three layers of sponge cake and two layers of yogurt cream, plus a layer of frosting, raspberry jelly on top, and a freeze-dried strawberry. The raspberry jelly was the most flavorful part of the cake – and the raspberry tasted natural. It’s not a soft jelly but more like a pate de fruit. The light pink sponge cake is light and fluffy but mild in flavor and not very sweet. The yogurt cream is tangy and not too sweet. It’s a good cake but I like their yogurt cake rolls better. The raspberry jelly was good but overpowered the other flavors of the cake.

I noticed that although the yogurt cakes take different forms, the components are very similar. I still have to try the yogurt mille crepe cake.

Yu Cake Yogurt Box Cakes

Fro-yo girl here. Last year I raved about Yu Cake’s yogurt cake rolls, declaring them the best yogurt cakes ever. I had a slice for my birthday too. They have other types of yogurt cake though. This time, I tried the yogurt box cake, which comes in three flavors: berry and blueberry. Each cake is $6.95.

Yogurt box cakes have similar components as the yogurt cake rolls (i.e., yogurt cream, sponge cake) but in different proportions. With the yogurt box cake, the plain yogurt cream is on the bottom of the clear box container, topped with chunky blueberry preserves, then topped with a layer of light sponge cake, and finally finished with a layer of blueberry yogurt cream and fresh blueberries. With the cake roll, the cake surrounds two layers of yogurt cream.

Blueberry yogurt box cake: The yogurt cream is smoothy, rich, and tangy. The cake was light but didn’t have much flavor. The blueberry preserves weren’t too sweet.

I still prefer the yogurt cake roll – maybe because of the buttercream on top? It’s also prettier than the yogurt box cake.

Yu Cake Adds Yogurt Daifuku and Creamy Mochi

Fro-yo girl here. Yu Cake, my favorite cake and Asian dessert shop, just added daifuku to the menu. Twelve flavors are available, including three yogurt ones: strawberry yogurt, blueberry yogurt, and blackgrape yogurt. They weren’t on display, so you have to ask for them (they’re in the back). When I ordered it, I was told it would take 10 minutes. They’re not making them to order, so they must be defrosting them to order. I think the price was $6.50. The daifuku are large.

I didn’t eat the strawberry yogurt daifuku right away and by the time I made it home, it was an hour later.

Strawberry yogurt daifuku: The rice cake shell (glutinous rice/mochi) was very soft, thin, and chewy. Though it was blue, I don’t think the rice cake shell was flavored. The center was still frozen and seemed like tangy frozen strawberry juice. The strawberry center was surrounded by a thick layer of yogurt cream. The yogurt cream was creamy and rich. It also tasted like coconut cream. Yu Cake’s daifuku is heavier and bigger than your typical fresh strawberry daifuku. While I appreciated the fact that the yogurt cream was tangy and tasted like yogurt, the frozen center threw me. I prefer the traditional strawberry daifuku with a fresh strawberry center. Maybe if they blended the strawberries into the yogurt cream and put something not frozen in the center like fresh fruit or jelly, I would like it more. I think yogurt daifuku is worth trying but I’ll stick with their yogurt cakes.

They also added Creamy Mochi with nine flavors of mochi. None of the new Creamy Mochi flavors are yogurt.

Cream filled and even yogurt cream daifuku seem to be popular. There are several videos on YouTube that show you how to make them.

Daifuku and creamy mochi are currently only available at the Yu Cake in San Gabriel.

Best Yogurt Cake at Yu Cake

Fro-yo girl here. Back in 2018, I reviewed the blueberry yogurt cake from Paris Baguette. Their blueberry yogurt cake featured three layers of vanilla sponge cake and three layers of blueberry yogurt cream. The cake was frosted and topped with fresh berries. I liked the lightness but I could not taste the yogurt. This was true for Tous Les Jours’ yogurt cake as well.

Well, Yu Cake’s blueberry yogurt cake roll actually tastes like yogurt! And it’s beautiful.

Yogurt blueberry cake roll ($8.75): The best yogurt cake ever! The center is a blueberry flavored whipped cream that actually is tangy and tastes like blueberry yogurt! You can see blueberry bits. But it’s also creamy and rich. It’s surrounded by whipped cream, a thin layer of light sponge cake (interesting purple color, tasted like plain cake), and topped with a creamy, richer buttercream, pistachios, and a dried fig. Loved the lightness, creaminess and the fact that it wasn’t too sweet. They had another flavor too, strawberry. The sign said the yogurt cake rolls were new.

I tried the strawberry yogurt cake roll and it's also very good. It's tangy and tastes like yogurt. The yogurt part has the consistency of whipped cream.

They also have yogurt icebox cakes, yogurt mille crepe cakes, and yogurt cake jars!

They also have yogurt drinks. The yogurt was too mild for me (not sour or tangy like usual plain yogurt) and the drink was too thick (not refreshing).

Yu Cake has locations in Rosemead, City of Industry, and San Gabriel, CA.
