Twisted Healthy Treats Frozen Yogurt Minis Review

Fro-yo girl here. I remember hearing about Twisted Healthy Treats Frozen Yogurt Minis breaking into the US market last year, when they announced that Costco would be selling their mini frozen yoghurt cups. Twisted Healthy Treats already had wide distribution in Australia, including being sold at Cole’s, Costco, Woolworths, Harris Farm and 80% of school canteens. Costco sells an exclusive 18 cup box of frozen yoghurt minis.

Twisted Healthy Treats is an Australian brand with an all-female management team. Their goal is to be Australia’s leading better for your frozen dessert manufacturer. All Twisted products are low in sugar, lower in calories, gluten-free, all-natural, and based on clean recipes. The frozen yogurt cups also contain probiotics and are just 95 calories per cup. Their products are made with Australian ingredients, including Australian dairy. They’re sweetened with Xylitol and thickened with maltodextrin and several vegetable gums.

Available froyo cup flavors (2 flavors per cup):

  • Watermelon & Mango
  • Strawberry & Vanilla Bean
  • Chocolate & Vanilla Bean
  • Murray River Salted Caramel & Chocolate
  • Blueberries & Cookie Dough
  • Chocolate & Coconut

I was surprised to find Twisted Healthy Treats Frozen Yogurt Minis at The Grocery Outlet in Highland Park (Los Angeles) for $1.99 a box (they said it sells for $5.99 elsewhere). One box comes with four froyo cups and weighs 16.2 fl oz (480 ml). Each cup comes with two flavors, side by side. The cups are very cute. One cup is 95 calories, 2g total fat, 10g – 11g total sugars, 3g protein.

Chocolate & Coconut: Surprisingly good both in terms of texture and flavor. The chocolate tasted like chocolate, the coconut like coconut. They were sweet but not crazy sweet. The froyo was thick and creamy, not hard and icy. Neither flavor tasted like froyo (they tasted like ice cream). There was a grainy aftertaste though, like you’d get when someone adds fiber to your food.

Watermelon & Mango: I didn’t like these as much because the fruit flavors seemed extra sweet. There wasn’t enough watermelon or mango flavor. And the grainy aftertaste was still there.

These were not the froyo flavors that I would have chosen but there was no choice at The Grocery Outlet.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Costco Drops Frozen Yogurt!

Fro-yo girl here. Costco no longer serves frozen yogurt? Say it isn’t so! Given the volume of frozen yogurt sold by Costco at its food court, this was major news. They’ve been serving YoCream froyo for many years. For many years, they offered two froyo flavors, nonfat vanilla and chocolate. You could also get froyo with strawberries. Many people loved the froyo. If you search Costco froyo on Twitter, there are many mentions. For some, the froyo was the main reason they went to Costco. The froyo was just $1.35 or $1.65 for the very berry sundae.

In mid-2018, Costco dropped chocolate frozen yogurt, replacing it with soft serve acai, in an effort to provide healthier options. The acai was also much more expensive than the chocolate froyo ($4.99 bowl, $2.99 for a froyo/acai swirl). I never tried the acai (I don’t like acai bowls because the acai usually has banana) but the reviews were mixed.

Costco replaced frozen yogurt with soft serve ice cream in June/July 2020. The ice cream is $1.99 for a cone or $2.49 for a sundae, still plenty cheap.

One thing that I don’t understand is why they don’t still offer froyo when the soft serve machines have a dual hopper and they could easily offer two flavors. There was no announcement or official word from Costco.

IKEA, don't fail me now...
