California Froyo Shop Openings and Closings in 2025

Pinkberry, Santa Clarita

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been tracking froyo shop openings and closings all year. This year, I found 33 new businesses serving froyo in California, including seven new Nick the Greek branches, four new Menchie's branches, four new Golden Spoon branches, and three new Pinkberry branches.

This was slightly more than 2024, when I found 30 new businesses that serve froyo.

I found fifteen froyo shop closings in 2025 (vs. 14 in 2024). Two froyo shops were lost in the LA wildfires. The two shops had the same ownership, and they also closed another location primarily due to the strain from losing two shops.

My goal is to track any new venue that serves froyo in soft serve form, including restaurants, convenience stores, pop-ups, froyo trucks, froyo trailers, vending machines, amusement parks, stadiums, etc. It's easier to track openings, since they're usually announced, but many places close quietly.

With 25 new froyo businesses set to open in 2026, that's considerably more than the eight we found at the end of 2024. Notably, Yogurtland plans to open 13 locations in California in 2026.

Businesses are listed in alphabetical order with the location noted.

Froyo Scene in Clovis, CA

Clovis is the second largest city in Fresno County, behind Fresno. It is known for its small town atmosphere and western frontier history. The current population is estimated to be 129,196 with a median age of 35.3 years. The average household income in Clovis is $128,557 with a poverty rate of 7.44%.

I found five froyo shops that are currently open in Clovis. All five shops are self-serve. I also found five closed froyo shops. Menchie’s opened a second location this year, and SweetFrog just opened in Clovis. There were far more froyo shop closures, 13, in Fresno, but froyo shops opened earlier in Fresno. The shops that opened in Clovis stayed open longer, probably due to having fewer competitors.

The oldest froyo shop in Clovis was TCBY. The oldest self-serve froyo shop, Mickey’s Yogurt, is still open. It opened in 2012.

Current Froyo Shops

  • JoJo’s Yogurt, 1798 Ashlan Ave Suite 100, offers self-serve froyo and shaved snow. The shop opened in 2014.
  • Menchie’s, 785 Herndon Ave #400, opened at Clovis Commons in 2015.
  • Menchie’s, 3750 Shaw Ave Suite 103, Clovis, CA 93619 opened in April 2025.
  • Mickey’s Yogurt, 2195 Shaw Ave, is a family-owned, non-franchise, self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2012.
  • SweetFrog, 1990 N Fowler Ave Ste 106, opened in September 2025.

Closed Froyo Shops

  • Big Kahuna Yogurt, 1250 Shaw Ave. #103, opened at Sierra Vista Mall in 2013 and closed in 2020 (likely due to the pandemic). It was self-serve. Big Kahuna has several locations in California, mainly in Central California.
  • Clovis Pizza Subs Yogurt, 1345 N Willow Ave, Ste 100, opened in 2019 and closed in 2021.
  • TCBY, 701 W Shaw Ave, may have closed in 2011, but may have been open since the 90s
  • Yummy Yogurt, 1250 Shaw Ave, may have replaced Big Kahuna inside Sierra Vista Mall. The space is now occupied by La Michoacana, so Yummy Yogurt was open some time between 2020 – 2024.
  • Yum Yum Yogurt, 1195 Herndon Ave, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2013 and closed in 2017.

Still Open But Stopped Serving Froyo

  • Costco, 2270 Clovis Ave, Clovis, CA 93612

Did I miss any froyo shops? Let me know if I did.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Whittier, CA Has Closed & Other Whittier Froyo News

Yogurtland Whittier, interior

Yogurtland Whittier, exterior

Fro-yo girl here. I hadn’t visited Whittier for a few months (not since fall 2022 when Amazon Go first opened) and it felt like time for another big flat rate cup of Pinkberry. The price hasn’t changed – it’s still $4.99, including toppings. And it’s still self-serve. Amazon Go is doing a good job with the froyo texture too! Anyway, as I was driving over to Amazon Go on Whittier Blvd., I noticed the Yogurtland sign had disappeared.

Yogurtland Whittier at the Quad has closed! The last day was December 23, 2022. They posted the following message on Facebook, “Thanks for all the love and support at our Whittier store throughout the years! Unfortunately, we have permanently closed our doors as of 12/23/22.” The shop first opened in 2012.

I took a few pictures. The froyo machines are gone but the counters, lights, and tile are still there. The exterior and interior signs were removed. I visited the location a few times. R.I.P., Yogurtland Whittier.

In other Whittier froyo news, Rockie’s is under now ownership. The shop was closed for remodeling and it reopened on March 25.

* YOGURTLAND, 13582-A Whittier Blvd, Whittier, CA 90605

2022 California Froyo Shop Openings & Closings

Fro-yo girl here. It's been an interesting year for froyo in California. While froyo shops continued to deal with rising costs and supply shortages, the number of non-froyo shops offering froyo seemed to be higher than ever, thanks to froyo vending machines (iCream partnered with Pinkberry) and Nick the Greek. Amazon Go opened three shops in Southern California, two of which offer self-serve Pinkberry froyo.

I tried to keep track of any place that serves froyo in soft serve form, including restaurants, convenience stores, pop-ups, froyo trucks and trailers, vending machines, and more. As usual, it's easier to find out about openings since many places close quietly, without making any announcement.

Froyo Shop Openings (Includes Froyo Trucks)

  1. Abyss Yogurt, inside Abyss Market, Valley Village

  16. Yogurtland, Fresno – El Paseo
  17. Yogurtland, Palmdale - East Ave.
  18. Yogurtland, Madera
  19. Yogurtland, Pixley

Not a Froyo Shop but Serves Froyo

  6. Pinkberry, Ontario International Airport, Terminal 2

That's a total of 46 new places that serve froyo: 18 new froyo shops (including two froyo trucks), 20 non-froyo shops, and 8 froyo vending machines. In 2021, I found 26 new places that started serving froyo, including 15 new froyo shops, 10 non-froyo shops that serve froyo, plus one existing cafĂ© that added froyo. That's a lot more in 2022 vs. 2021.

I didn’t count the rebranded froyo businesses or the ones under new ownership, but I did try to track both.

Three Yogurtland locations closed in Southern California and two Menchie's locations. One Yogurtland location closed in Northern California. In 2021, I found 45 closings, including 8 Menchie’s locations, 2 Pinkberry locations, 4 Tutti Frutti locations, and 6 Yogurtland locations.

And more froyo is on the way. I found 20 places listed as opening soon.
