Chimney Cakes Have Arrived in Los Angeles

Fro-yo girl here. Chimney cakes, aka chimney cones, look like doughnut cones. They’re originally from Transylvania. Chimney cake mania hit the Toronto area about a year ago and the cones have spread to other areas. The cakes can be sweet or savory. Chimney sundaes feature the chimney cones filled with ice cream or frozen yogurt.

Sweet n' Hollow has brought chimney cakes to Los Angeles. They had a stand at Paseo Colorado where they make chimney cakes from scratch and bake them to order. The process started with a ball of yeast dough that it rolled by hand into a rope and wrapped around a wooden rod. It's then rolled in sugar, roasted on a spit (like a kabob) and basted with butter as it roasts. The sugar caramelizes and turns the cone into a golden brown.

* The O.G. Chimney ($7): The OG is a freshly made, warm chimney cone rolled in cinnamon sugar with Nutella filling. The cone was a good size, probably the size of a big soft pretzel (Auntie Anne's, Wetzel's Pretzels). The dough was similar to soft pretzel dough but it was a bit thinner so the resulting texture was a bit crunchier on the outside. The inside was soft. It tasted similar to a soft pretzel but was almost twice as expensive. The Nutella made it pretty sweet.
Sweet n' Hollow is still working on its menu but during my visit they only had sweet cinnamon sugar cones coated with Nutella on the inside. You could add cookies, peanuts, coconut or syrup OR get the cone filled with chocolate or vanilla ice cream.

I was disappointed they only had one flavor and that it was so sweet. Still, it's nice to try something different. As a froyo cone, it would work with the sweeter flavors.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
