Froyo Scene in Los Gatos, CA

Auzzy The Bear

Fro-yo girl here. Beautiful Los Gatos, a city that’s south of San Jose and in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, was once home to one of the best tart froyo shops in the Bay Area, Café Delatti. Sunny Kim opened Café Delatti in 2007, when tart froyo was still new and novel.  Another location opened in downtown Pleasanton in 2008. It wasn’t quite as good as the Los Gatos location.

Residents of Los Gatos are quite fond of their froyo. Sweet Retreat, TCBY, or Yogurt Delite was the first “old school” froyo shop in Los Gatos. We found nine closed froyo shops and one bakery that’s still open but no longer serves froyo.

Today, you can get froyo at Auzzy The Bear, Easy Breezy, and Rosy Yogurt. The first two are relatively new self-serve froyo shops. Easy Breezy hails from San Francisco and makes proprietary flavors from scratch. Rosy Yogurt is the “old school” counter-serve froyo shop in town; it used to be Yumi Yogurt and Yogurt Delite before that.

Los Gatos has 33,529 residents and the median household income is $407,500. It’s one of the nicest places to live in the Bay Area and is considered to be part of Silicon Valley.

Current Froyo Shops

  • Auzzy The Bear, 33 E. Main St, opened in the former Yogurt & Love space in the summer of 2022. More than a froyo shop, Auzzy The Bear also serves boba tea, Vietnamese coffee, espresso drinks, smoothies, and banh mi. The froyo is self-serve.
  • Easy Breezy, 307 N Santa Cruz Ave, is in downtown Los Gatos. This is Easy Breezy’s first shop in Santa Clara County; it opened in May 2022. The soft serve is hand-crafted and made with organic ingredients whenever possible. Since the soft serve is made with the best Italian soft serve machines, the froyo/soft serve texture is better – thick, smooth, creamy, but not dense. It’s self-serve.
  • Rosy Yogurt, 464 N Santa Cruz Ave, opened in 2016, taking over from Yumi Yogurt. I made it to Yumi Yogurt in Los Gatos and I’ve been to Rosy Yogurt. It’s not that different from Yumi Yogurt. If you like old-school, counter-serve froyo, Carbolite, and Wow Cow, Rosy Yogurt should satisfy your cravings. Rosy Yogurt also serves Lappert’s Ice Cream, coffee, acai bowls, smoothies, floats, shakes, frappes, etc.

Past Froyo Shops

  • Café Delatti, 42 Elm St, opened in 2007, bringing tart froyo to Los Gatos. I remember how much I liked it. It was on my list of Top 10 Bay Area Froyo Spots in 2018 and the subject of my 500th Yelp review. The shop closed in 2010. The space was taken over by Sips & Sweets Too.
  • Happy Yogurt, 13 N. Santa Cruz, was a no-frills small self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2009 and closed in 2011. They served six froyo flavors a day. There was a froyo shop with the same name in San Francisco. It looked similar and was also very small.
  • Sips & Sweets Too, 42 Elm St, opened in 2014 and closed in 2015. The shop served boba, smoothies, froyo, shaved ice, and more. They kept the Café Delatti froyo machines and fixtures.
  • Sweet Retreat, 15545 Union Ave, was an ice cream shop that also offered mix-in style froyo. You would choose the mix-ins and the employee would blend the mix-ins with the froyo. There were multiple locations in Santa Clara County. Sweet Retreat Los Gatos was old school – not sure when it opened (before 2006, possibly in the 90’s), but it closed in 2017.
  • TCBY, 13 N Santa Cruz Ave, may have closed in 2008? I’m not sure when it first opened.
  • Tutti Frutti, 42 Elm St, must have been open in 2011 – 2014 before Café Delatti became Sips & Sweets Too. The American Italian Delicatessen took over the space in 2015. It would have been a small, self-serve froyo shop, part of the international self-serve froyo chain.
  • Yogurt & Love, 33 E Main St, was part of a non-descript national self-serve froyo chain. The Los Gatos shop opened in 2014 and closed in 2018. They were known for their extensive toppings selection, with over 50 toppings.
  • Yogurt Delite, 464 N Santa Cruz Ave, was one of several old-school froyo shops in the Bay Area. I’m not sure when it opened but it was taken over by Yumi Yogurt in 2008.
  • Yumi Yogurt, 464 N Santa Cruz Ave, was a counter-serve old school froyo shop known for generous portions. It closed in 2016 and the space was taken over by Rosy Yogurt. It seems to have opened in 2008.

Still Open but No Longer Serves Froyo

  • Icing on the Cake, 50 W Main St, is a local bakery that opened in 1985. I liked their cupcakes. They also added froyo around 2008? I’m not sure how long it was offered – not that long.

Did I miss any froyo shops in Los Gatos? Let me know if I did.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Souvla Bi-Rite Flavor Collab, Walnut Baklava Cherry Swirl

Fro-yo girl here. Congrats to Souvla on turning TEN. The tenth anniversary inspired a special collaboration between Souvla and Bi-Rite Creamery. Walnut Baklava Cherry Swirl, a limited edition collaboration, is a combination of Souvla’s frozen Greek yogurt and Bi-Rite Creamery ice cream, with a dark cherry syrup swirl and baklava made with honey, cinnamon, and toasted walnuts. I knew I had to try this limited edition flavor!

It’s a sweet and tangy yogurt ice cream. Souvla fans will appreciate the nod to Souvla’s froyo toppings, vissino and baklava. Interestingly, both Souvla's froyo and Bi-Rite's ice cream are made with Straus dairy.

Walnut Baklava Cherry Swirl Greek yogurt ice cream: It did remind me of Souvla’s frozen Greek froyo with added cream. It wasn’t quite as sour and while it was sweeter than the froyo, it seemed less sweet than your typical ice cream. The baklava pieces were a lot smaller than you’d get with your Souvla froyo, but the components did remind me of Souvla baklava. The cherry syrup was another nice touch – not sour, not too sweet. A scoop is $6 and a pint $11. For reference, you can get a cup of Souvla frozen Greek yogurt for $5 (plain), $6 with sour cherry syrup and $8 with baklava crumbles. Do I prefer Souvla froyo or the Souvla/Bi-Riteyogurt ice cream? The velvety, sour froyo of course. But Walnut Baklava Cherry Swirl is a tasty new flavor that does taste like froyo.

You can get Walnut Baklava Cherry Swirl yogurt ice cream pints at Bi-Rite and Souvla locations and get it by the pint or scoop at Bi-Rite Creamery on 18th Street in San Francisco. Delivery is available.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Pac-Man Spoons at Yogurtland

Fro-yo girl here. Pac-Man, the classic video game that was released in 1980, is the inspiration for Yogurtland’s newest collectible froyo spoons. In the game, Pac-Man, a character that looks like a pizza with a slice missing, must navigate a maze by eating dots, while avoiding four colored ghosts. If the ghost catches Pac-Man, he loses a life. It is considered one of the most influential video games of all time.

Yogurtland’s newest spoons feature Pac-Man (a yellow spoon), a blue ghost, and a red ghost. The spoons say Yogurtland and Pac-Man on the handle. These are the first new character spoons from Yogurtland in 2024.

The spoons are available while supplies last. There may be a Pac-Man cup as well, but I haven’t seen it yet.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

First East Bay Easy Breezy Opens in Walnut Creek

Fro-yo girl here. Easy Breezy #6 is the first EB in the East Bay! The shop opened in mid-March 2024 in downtown Walnut Creek, near Broadway Plaza (I had a flashback to my visit to Yogurt Park in Broadway Plaza many moons ago). Like the other locations, the Walnut Creek branch is adorable. The first thing I saw was the familiar signboard with the mascot, Breezy.

WC EB features eight hand-crafted flavors of froyo, custard, and vegan soft-serve with premium toppings and warm sauces. It’s $0.98/oz – yes, more expensive, but the quality is better. I personally love their creamy, tangy, velvety original tart. It tastes different than any other original tart out there. The toppings bar made me happy…spotted Lotus cookies, madeleines, nuts, sprinkles, lots of fresh fruit, cheesecake, candy, cereal, and syrups.

The décor looked familiar – light blue walls, hand-written flavor signs, Carpigiani soft serve machines, a froyo toppings island, and eco-friendly touches like bowls for dining in and reusable bowls. The vegan flavors are made with different bases, including coconut milk and cashew milk. Everything is clearly labeled for people with dietary restrictions.

Samples are dispensed by a friendly employee.

Congrats, Easy Breezy!

The London Dough Co.’s Doughlicious Blueberry Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I remember hearing about The London Dough Co.’s Doughlicious line years ago. Doughlicious, formerly known as Dough-chi, is a combination of cookie dough, cookie crumb, and gelato (or frozen yogurt). The bite-size snack was introduced in the UK in 2021. I noticed that there was one froyo flavor, Blueberry, but I didn’t think that I would be able to try it.

However, The London Dough Co. just launched Doughlicious in the US at Whole Foods. Doughlicious is available nationwide in the ice cream aisle. Made in London in a facility powered by renewable energy, Doughlicious is hand-crafted, non-GMO, and gluten-free.

Available flavors: Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Truffle, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Churro, Strawberry, Blueberry Yogurt.

Whole Foods in Pasadena, California, only had one flavor in stock. Fortunately, it was Blueberry Yogurt! And it was on sale, $4.89 for a box of 6 pieces or 7.2 oz. The regular price was $6.99. It looks like they also carried Cinnamon Churro but sold out. The balls are not individually wrapped but are packaged in a tray with six compartments and a thin plastic film on top.

Blueberry Yogurt: The balls are round and about the size of a cake pop, doughnut hole, or mochi ice cream. Blueberry frozen yogurt is surrounded by blueberry cheesecake cookie dough and rolled in thin dusting of classic cookie crumb. It tastes good! But I couldn’t taste the blueberry or the yogurt. The dough flavor was stronger than the froyo flavor. The thin layer of dough was moist, slightly fruity from the blueberry and slightly tangy from the cheesecake. It was a pretty purple color. The frozen yogurt was soft and icy. It didn’t seem that sweet but I couldn’t really taste the froyo. The ball is sweet but not crazy sweet. It reminds me of a cake pop.

For the Blueberry Yogurt flavor, the serving size is one piece (1.2 oz). One serving is 100 calories, total fat 5g, total carbs 14g, total sugars 7g, and protein 2g. And the main ingredient is blueberry yogurt.

“All Doughlicious products are made with premium ingredients, naturally gluten-free, no added refined sugar, and free from white-bleached flour, artificial additives, and preservatives. All ingredients are responsibly sourced from reputable suppliers adhering to the brand’s standards for quality, animal welfare, and sustainable production methods.”

Doughlicious is also available in Australia.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

4 out of 5 stars.

Seattle Froyo Update

Fro-yo girl here. About 12 years ago, I used to visit Seattle regularly, and I visited most of the froyo shops there. When I first started visiting, there were a few local shops like Crazy Cherry (inspired by Pinkberry), Utopia, Café Koi, and old-school Shy Giant at Pike Place Market. Boba shops in the U District like Citra started offering froyo. Cafes like Jewel Box Café and Sprout also started offering froyo.

I witnessed the rise of the self-serve froyo shops in Seattle, with the opening of multiple branches of Menchie’s and Yogurtland. Menchie’s was the first to open a self-serve shop in Seattle back in 2010. Yogurtland had six locations in Washington and they’ve all closed. Menchie’s has 21 locations in Washington, with two of these in Seattle proper.

Quite a few froyo shops have opened and closed since that time, including Zoeyogurt, Cool Whirled, Yeti Yogurt, Refresh, Red Mango, TCBY, Chill, Froyo Fresh, etc. Some froyo shops that closed were replaced by other froyo shops (e.g., Yogurtland became Refresh, Menchie’s University Village became Chill).

YoYo and CoCo opened in Wallingford in 2022. It was the first shop in the US that offered froyo cubes, a trend that started in China. It was open for a year. Interestingly, another yogurt cube shop opened in Bellevue in 2023. It’s called Lucky Cube.

Current Froyo Shops

  • Menchie’s Queen Anne, 2101 Queen Anne Ave North
  • Menchie’s Admiral, 2620 California Ave SW, Ste 400
  • Shy Giant, 1500 Pike Pl #16, Seattle, WA 98101

Hellenika Cultured Creamery, 1920a Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, offers gelato style scoopable cultured gelato, from the family that founded Ellenos. But they do not call their product froyo.

For a city with a population of 757,992 in 2024, that’s not many froyo shops.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Innovative Froyo (Cultured Gelato) Shop Spotlight: Hellenika Cultured Creamery in Seattle

Fro-yo girl here. I recently visited Seattle to check out Hellenika Cultured Creamery, which opened in Pike Place Market in July 2023. Hellenika Cultured Creamery was founded by three siblings, including one of the co-founders of Ellenos Yogurt.

Hellenika calls the cultured scoopable frozen dessert that they serve “cultured gelato”; it’s made with milk, cream, sugar, and cultures. The cultures that are used result in a product that is less tangy than traditional yogurt. The cultured gelato is made in gelato machines and served straight from the machine. There are twelve flavors offered at a time. Some flavors are made with products from other vendors at Pike Place Market.

The shop has a minimalist/laboratory look. It’s very white. Instead of a case of gelato, the counter has churning gelato. Each flavor is covered by a clear dome. The kitchen is visible from the retail area.

Flavors: London Fog, Matcha, Dutch Chocolate, Plain Greek, Bananas Foster, Yuzu, Ube Coconut, Honey Lavender, Miso Caramel, Mango, Lemon Curd, Marionberry. No vegan options.

Ube coconut had bits of coconut. Plain Greek was mild with little tang. Lemon curd wasn’t sour but it had a bit more tang. Marionberry had some tang from the berries. The gelato is rich (it’s made with whole milk), so even a small size seems satisfying. I did miss the tang of yogurt. The gelato tasted more like cream than yogurt. The texture was sticky and softer than ice cream. I prefer the firmer texture of ice cream over gelato and the flavor of tangy froyo over both ice cream and gelato.

Prices: Walkaround ($6.50, add $0.75 for a split flavor), Medium ($8.50), Large ($12.50), Mezze ($16.50). They do not have any toppings or sauces.

Both Yogurtland and Menchie’s have offered cultured gelato in the past. Their cultured gelato didn’t taste like yogurt either.

Hellenika is located at Pike Place Market, near Piroshky Piroshky and the first Starbucks.

Yogurtland Eagle Rock Returns to Full Self-Service

Fro-yo girl here. Self-serve is back at Yogurtland Eagle Rock! I think they adopted partial-serve in 2021. You could get your own froyo but not the toppings.

A week ago, they brought back self-serve toppings. Finally! I also heard that Yogurtland Burbank will soon allow you to serve your own toppings too.

Innovative Froyo Shop Spotlight: Top It Yogurt Shoppe in Snohomish, WA

Fro-yo girl here. Once in a blue moon, I’ll encounter a froyo shop with an owner who really cares about providing the best froyo and the best froyo shop experience. And I found that in the small town of Snohomish, about 60 miles north of Seattle.

Top It Yogurt Shoppe opened in 2013. The current owner, Ken, took over Top It about 1.5 years ago and transformed it into a shop that reflects his commitment to serving the best froyo and toppings in a unique, friendly environment.

The froyo is made with a liquid mix served from the best soft serve machines (Electro Freeze & Carpigiani). The texture is superior, so the froyo tastes better too. It’s self-serve with 12 flavors a day. Each flavor label lists whether the flavor is gluten-free, sugar-free, lowfat, contains nuts, contains egg, etc. And each label also had a Titanic fact.

He switched to flat rate pricing, because he knows what it’s like when you take your kids to a self-serve froyo shop and they load up their cups.

Prices: Small ($5)/ Medium ($7.50)/ Large ($9). It’s self-serve but flat rate. There’s a smaller cup available, if you ask for it.

He wanted to serve products that he felt good about and when he looked at the ingredients in some common froyo toppings, he decided to make his own toppings. Over half the toppings and sauces, including the sprinkles, cookies, crumble, cookie dough, cheesecake, brownies, brownie batter, mochi, granola, etc. are made in-house. Almost everything is vegan. The only dairy product used is milk. Other toppings include fresh fruit, nuts, candies, chocolate-covered nuts, chocolate chips, pb chips, cereal, honey, etc. I haven’t seen so many homemade toppings at a froyo shop in many years.

Ken cares about the environment, so the shop is carbon neutral, composting and recycling most of the waste, and offering reusable bowls and spoons. Organic ingredients are used when available.

And Ken wants to make the shop a true experience, so he’s decorated it with various themes. The current theme is Titanic and the shop is currently a mini-Titanic museum (you have to see it to appreciate it). There are replicas of the stained glass windows of the Titanic and the side of the Titanic, photos of the Titanic, artifacts from the Titanic, books on the Titanic, and more. He even posted elaborate daily summaries of the final voyage of the Titanic. And he made toppings inspired by what was served on the Titanic.

Ken greeted everyone who entered the shop, and he was the one who dispensed the samples.

The shop has the charm of an older building (it’s in Historic Downtown Snohomish) and is a few steps from the Snohomish River. If you provide your phone number, you’ll get 5% off on subsequent visits. It’s a true gem of a froyo shop that you should visit if you’re in the area. It has to be the best froyo shop in the Seattle area right now.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Menchie’s The Berry Best! Barry Spoon

Fro-yo girl here. Did you know that May is National Strawberry Month? It’s the perfect time to release a new strawberry-themed froyo spoon. Menchie’s newest collectible spoon features Barry, Menchie’s Sweet Friend who looks like a strawberry. The red spoon says “the berry best!”. Barry is holding a cup of froyo on the end and the bowl of the spoon features a strawberry. On the back of the spoon, you can see the back side of Barry holding a cup of froyo.

So cute. The spoons were going fast. Menchie’s in Valley Village went through one box of spoons in a few hours.

Get your collectible Menchie’s Barry spoons before they run out.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Menchie’s May Flavors and a Double Smiles Day

Fro-yo girl here. Menchie’s is featuring two NEW flavors this month: Chocolate Dipped Churro froyo made with Hershey’s Chocolate and Cherry Cola sorbet. I haven’t found Cherry Cola sorbet yet.

Chocolate Dipped Churro froyo made with Hershey’s Chocolate is a perfect flavor for Cinco De Mayo. Menchie’s had a yummy Churro froyo flavor in 2015 called Twisted Cinnamon Churro. I haven’t seen it in years, unfortunately. Fortunately, the new Chocolate Dipped Churro froyo is also a winner. It tastes more like churro than chocolate. In other words, the chocolate flavor is not heavy or overwhelming. Chocolate Dipped Churro is lowfat and made with no artificial flavors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup. Recommended toppings: Cinnamon Toast Crunch, mini Hershey’s Kisses, chocolate shell, and your favorite nuts.

Cherry Cola sorbet: This vegan flavor tastes like cherry cola. It’s nonfat, gluten-free, and contains no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no high fructose corn syrup. It reminds me of an ICEE or Slurpee. I could taste the cherry and the cola. It seemed very sweet. I can't imagine eating a cup of this flavor. Recommended toppings: strawberries, Cool Whip

Price Increase at Pinkberry Burbank

Fro-yo girl here. Froyo prices have been increasing like crazy this year (e.g., prices at Yogurtland Pasadena on Lake have gone up three times already this year). In February, the froyo was $0.74/oz at Pinkberry Burbank. The price is now $0.80/oz, an increase of over 8%. Ouch. That's more than the anticipated price increase of 4.1% for food-away-from-home and we're not even at the halfway point of 2024.

Food-at-home prices are expected to increase less than food-away-from-home prices. Maybe it's time to bring your own toppings?

You know you love me. xo xo, fro-yo girl.
