Mystery of Yogurtland’s Generic Pink Yogurt Spoons

Fro-yo girl here. About three weeks ago, I noticed that my Yogurtland switched to generic pink yogurt spoons. These generic spoons do not say Yogurtland on them. I thought they ran out of spoons and were waiting for a new shipment…however, it’s been three weeks, they still only give out generic pink spoons. Not only that, but I went to another Yogurtland location which only had generic pink spoons.

A quick search on Instagram revealed that most of the recent Yogurtland pictures feature generic pink spoons.

Could this be the end of the Yogurtland’s custom spoons?

The trade war with China is driving up costs of yogurt cups and spoons, according to my packaging source.

Somehow my froyo doesn’t taste as good with a generic spoon, and it certainly doesn’t look as nice. But I do have to ask myself whether I'd rather pay more for froyo or have generic spoons. I guess generic spoons are okay if they have special spoons for campaigns. But what if the Yogurtland cups go away too? Hmm...

In a 2012 interview with Yogurtland founder, Phillip Chang, he said:

"Fifteen million spoons are used a year in our stores. So we made our spoon really substantial. All the customers notice the spoons and they keep them. … They have them in their kitchen drawers.

Chang says the fact that Yogurtland’s signature spoons are reusable makes them “green,” something that he says is important to his business fundamentals.

“I can’t accept something that is used once and thrown away,” he says. “It doesn’t go with my philosophy of frugality.”

Another bonus: “Little kids love the spoon,” Chang says, making the one in the kitchen drawer a constant reminder of Yogurtland."

Speaking of cups, I wonder why Yogurtland is still using the Joy cup design? That Joy promotion was last summer’s promotion. The Joy cups have been around for a year now.

Thanks, Yogurtland, for reaching out to tell me that Yogurtland custom spoons will return. The Joy cup design became the standard cup design because they liked the design so much, but a new cup design will be released in 2019.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Planet Yogurt Closes in Daly City

Fro-yo girl here. My froyo ambassador notified me that Planet Yogurt inside Serramonte Center in Daly City, CA, has finally closed. I never liked their yogurt and probably last went in 2012, when I reviewed it for thefrozenyogurtreview.com. I gave it 2.5 stars out of 5 at the time. Half a star was for offering more tart flavors than average. Daly City has always had poor froyo options, for some reason. Remember Yogurt Circle?

Planet Yogurt opened at the Serramonte in 2008. It was a smaller shop with 12 self-serve fro-yo flavors a day and the usual toppings of nuts, mochi, cookies, candy, fruit, jellies, popping boba, cereal and syrups. It was definitely cheap and convenient if you happened to be at the mall.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Future Froyo Shop Pictures: Menchie’s Port Hueneme, CA

Fro-yo girl here. It looks like Menchie’s Port Hueneme is close to open. They are currently hiring employees. While the main sign hasn’t gone up outside of the building, the interior looks close to being finished. The shop was filled with boxes of supplies. The furniture was inside as well.

There will be 12 self-serve froyo flavors a day for 59 cents an ounce. Menchie’s is located next to the Habit.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Peachwave Opens First Location in California

Fro-yo girl here. Peachwave is a self-serve froyo chain founded in 2009. A new owner and CEO took over in 2015 with the goal of growing the brand. Unlike many froyo chains, Peachwave does not charge its licensees a fee or royalties. And so, the first Peachwave opened in the land of frozen yogurt (Southern California) in late July. Peachwave Calabasas is in a new strip mall that’s mostly vacant at the moment.

The space is brand new and it looked clean, bright, and spacious inside. There were 12 self-serve flavors a day with housemade waffle bowls, cup dividers, toppings, and sauces for 49 cents an ounce. The toppings bar is extensive and included fresh fruit, mochi, popping boba, cookie dough, coconut, candy, cookies, nuts, granola, marshmallows, and sauces. Toppings were labeled.

They use Stoelting soft serve machines. I found the texture to be too soft. The yogurt wasn’t special. I found the froyo flavor selection to be rather boring (e.g., chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel, cookies & cream) though they had NSA flavors, gelato, and non-dairy options. I wish the flavors were more interesting and that they had more than one tart flavor. Also, if you blindfolded me, I could not tell the difference between sweetFrog and Peachwave. Peachwave has better décor without all the Biblical quotes and the knockoff Keroppi mascots.

You can also create your own smoothie or shake, using the clear cups. They have a special, No Weigh Thursdays. Because of the excellent service, I hope they are successful in Calabasas.

According to the Peachwave website, another location is opening in downtown Los Angeles.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

COYO Coconut Yogurt Alternative Review

Fro-yo girl here. COYO is the first commercially available cultured yogurt alternative made with coconuts. The founder grew up in Fiji, where he collected coconuts and scraped them for dinner. Later, this inspired him to make yogurt out of coconut milk with probiotics.

Whole Foods has been carrying COYO for awhile now. I found COYO for $2.99. It is dairy-free, gluten free, non-GMO, vegan/paleo, gum free and has no added sugar.

* Natural: I was surprised by how thick and clumpy the yogurt was when I opened it. It was thicker than Greek yogurt and even skyr. I recommend stirring it so that it looks smoother and less clumpy. It was so thick that it reminded me of cream cheese, only coconut flavored. Sourness was present but not overwhelmingly so. The coconut flavor was quite prominent. It was too rich and heavy to eat like a regular yogurt, but I quite liked it spread on toast
. It would work well for savory applications as well.

One container is 5.3 oz. One serving is 5.3 oz, 390 calories, 38g total fat, 5g sugars, 3g protein, and 10g carbohydrates.

Ingredients (natural): Coconut cream (coconut extract, water), tapioca, pectin, probiotic cultures.

Available flavors: Natural, Mango, Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, Mixed Berry

You can use the store locator to find COYO.

4 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pressed Juicery Testing New Freeze Flavor, Coffee

Fro-yo girl here. Today is World Plant Milk Day. It seemed like a good day for a Pressed Freeze. I was delighted to spot a new test flavor at the Glendale/Americana Pressed Juicery, Coffee.

I’ve never had Pressed Juicery’s Vanilla Coffee drink. It’s made with almond milk, dates, Kona coffee, and vanilla bean. The Coffee Freeze probably has the same short list of natural ingredients. Like other flavors of Freeze, it’s plant-based, vegan, and has no added sugar.

I no longer see Vanilla Coffee listed on the Pressed Juicery website, so perhaps it's been discontinued or is seasonal.

* Coffee Freeze: The coffee flavor is mellow and smooth. It’s probably not made with dark roast coffee beans? What I like best about Freeze is that it’s not that sweet, it’s very refreshing, and the aftertaste is very clean. It’s one of the better Freeze flavors for sure.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Cocomo Froyo Makes Its Debut at Smorgasburg LA

Fro-yo girl here. Cocomo Froyo made its debut at Smorgsaburg LA on July 22, 2018. The new food stand is from the Goa Taco folks.

Cocomo Froyo starts with handmade traditional yogurt made from coconuts that is then slowly churned into frozen yogurt. It’s plant-based, vegan, dairy-free, and soy-free. They also don’t use plastic spoons or cups.

Right now, Cocomo Froyo is only available at Smorgsaburg, which is held most Sundays from 10 AM – 4 PM. You can find their stall in Ice Cream Alley, to the left of the main entrance.

There were two flavor combinations available:

* Fresh summer berries, raspberry chia pudding, rose jelly, basil

* Toasted coconut, fresh pineapple, pineapple chips, fresh mint

One serving comes with two scoops and toppings for $7. The creation is assembled to order. They even had an anti-griddle to make little coconut discs.

The summer berries creation was very pretty. It included fresh flower petals. The blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries were super fresh. The frozen yogurt was light and refreshing, with some larger ice chunks. It wasn’t as smooth as I expected, but the lightness and the fact that it wasn’t too sweet made it well suited to a hot Sunday afternoon. It reminded me of shaved ice. The toppings were impeccably fresh and/or interesting. I particularly liked the microbasil – the pop of flavor it added. The toppings seemed better than the frozen yogurt. The froyo had no tang.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Rowland Heights Grand Reopening Celebration

Fro-yo girl here. Good news, Yogurtland and froyo fans. The Yogurtland in Rowland Heights (Colima & Fairway) has reopened – same location, different owner. It still has 16 self-serve froyo flavors a day. The price went up a little – from 47 to 49 cents an ounce. The store layout hasn’t changed and neither has the toppings counter or the wall of froyo with square green tiles.

The grand reopening celebration, held today, featured:

11 AM – 2 PM: Free froyo & toppings

2 PM – 5 PM: Face painting

5 PM – 7 PM: Prize wheel

6 PM – 7 PM: Grand prize drawing, winner must be present to win. Three people will win $100 Yogurtland gift cards.

I went for the free froyo (trying to get my fill of Strawberry Rose froyo before it disappears). It was well organized. Everyone received a small cup that they could fill up as much as they wanted. They limited how many people were inside the shop at any one time. We also received a raffle ticket and a $1 off coupon. People who signed up for Real Rewards received a giant Yogurtland spoon. Kids received free balloons.

P.S. There are two Yogurtland locations in Rowland Heights. Both of them are on Colima Rd.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Kombucha Coffee Experiments – Three Methods for Making Coffee Kombucha

Fro-yo girl here. Now that I’m making my own kombucha on a regular basis, I’ve been experimenting with different teas and flavorings. Mr. Froyo loves coffee, so he wondered about coffee kombucha.

There are several ways to make kombucha coffee. The first method starts by making a coffee syrup with brewed coffee, water, and sugar, adding the coffee syrup to your finished kombucha, sealing the bottle and waiting 5-7 days for the second ferment to occur. The second method is to brew a big batch of coffee, dissolve sugar into the coffee, and add your SCOBY. The third method involves adding coffee beans to your homemade kombucha during the 2nd ferment.

Method 1: I had some leftover coffee from a good coffee place (Constellation Coffee in La Canada Flintridge, CA) which I used to make coffee syrup. I added it to my freshly (home) brewed kombucha in a bottle and let the second fermentation happen. After about a week, I tried it. The coffee kombucha liquid smelled like vinegar with coffee. It wasn’t the most appealing scent, but my extra strong homemade kombucha usually smells like vinegar. I could definitely taste the coffee and the kombucha but the kombucha flavor was much stronger than the coffee flavor. I thought I could smell/taste a bit of alcohol too. It wasn’t bad but I think I’d like a stronger coffee flavor. Mr. Froyo seemed to like it. It also seemed less refreshing than regular kombucha.

Method 2: This method seems like it would result in a stronger coffee flavor, since it starts with a pot of freshly brewed coffee. Basically, you brew the coffee, dissolve sugar in it, add your SCOBY and ferment.

I started with half a cup of Trader Joe’s Dark 100% arabica whole coffee beans. After grinding the beans, I added sugar and 4 cups of hot water to a French press, brewed for 4 minutes, and let it cool to room temperature. A few hours later I transferred the contents to a glass jar using a filter, added a SCOBY, covered the top with a dark cloth, and set it aside. The SCOBY turned very dark. After 10 days, I tried it.

The liquid was much darker than the coffee kombucha made with coffee syrup. It smelled more like coffee than kombucha. It was also much more carbonated than the Method 1 product and even my typical homemade kombucha.

In terms of taste, the coffee flavor was dominant but it had a sour, vinegary kick and a bitter aftertaste. Mr. Froyo said it was okay. The coffee I brewed was probably too strong and too bitter. Method 1 resulted in a slightly tastier coffee kombucha.

Method 3: I used whole coffee beans added to homemade kombucha to infuse coffee flavor during the second ferment. I added about a tablespoon of Trader Joe’s Dark coffee beans to a bottle of homemade kombucha during the second ferment. I let it infuse for a few days.

This was my favorite method. The end result tasted more like kombucha than coffee and it was much less bitter than the brew from Method 2. The coffee flavor was dark and smoky, like the flavor of the beans. It wasn't as sweet as Method 1's brew. However, Mr. Froyo wasn't so fond of this batch.

There are other ways to make coffee kombucha, including using different methods to brew the coffee. Apparently, cold brewing the coffee can provide a good result.

SCOBY thrive in tea but not in coffee, so if you plan to make coffeebucha, make sure you have extra SCOBY.  Warning, Mr. Froyo did not love coffeebucha.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Siggi’s Triple Cream Skyr Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. In my area, many grocery stores that carry Siggi’s do not carry their newer Triple Cream Skyr Yogurt product, and it’s unfortunate because Triple Cream is fabulous. I found it at Whole Foods for $1.59 (regular price). Each cup is 4 oz.

Siggi’s Triple Cream Skyr Yogurt is inspired by a concoction created by Siggi’s mom, which featured half skyr mixed with half whipped cream. Siggi’s version is made with whole milk and pasteurized cream. Like their other products, it’s low sugar, high quality, and made with a few simple, all-natural ingredients.

* Vanilla: It’s richer, creamier, and smoother than their regular skyr. The vanilla had visible vanilla specks throughout and a strong vanilla flavor. It was tangy with a sour, clean finish. While the size was smaller than average, the richness made it filling. You can definitely taste the cream.

* Raspberry:
Raspberries are blended throughout and they add tang and flavor. Love it.

* Lemon: The lemon flavor is there and it adds extra tang, but it needed more lemon flavor. The cream flavor was stronger.

One serving of vanilla contains 170 calories, 10g total fat, 10g total carbohydrates, 8g sugars, and 9g protein.

Available flavors: Vanilla, Raspberry, Plain, Chocolate, Lemon

Ingredients (Vanilla): Pasteurized whole milk, pasteurized cream, organic agave nectar, Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, fruit pectin, live active cultures.

Triple Cream would be perfect for breakfast or a snack.

5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pinkberry Introduces New Banana Bread Flavor For the Fall

Fro-yo girl here. While it’s still officially summer and hotter than **** in Los Angeles, fall is just around the corner and fall usually brings warm, comforting froyo flavors. I was pleasantly surprised to see the first fall 2018 froyo flavor announcement today. Pinkberry is launching Banana Bread frozen yogurt today. It will be available till September 27.

Unfortunately, I loathe bananas. However, I still force myself to try banana flavored frozen yogurt. I can’t judge how good banana flavored frozen yogurt is though.

I found Banana Bread frozen yogurt at Pinkberry Burbank. I did not see any new toppings to accompany the new flavor.

* Banana Bread frozen yogurt:
The banana flavor was not overwhelming, super strong, or vile. The texture and flavor were lighter and pleasantly sweet. It reminded me of their Butter Pecan flavor. Recommended toppings: Cinnamon crumble, caramelized pecans, bananas, granola.

Here’s the official press release:

Future Fro-yo Shop Pictures: Snowy Frozen Yogurt in Petaluma, CA

Fro-yo girl here. My best froyo tipster and ambassador, SS, has come through with froyo news yet again. A new shop will be opening soon in Plaza North Shopping Center, Petaluma, CA. It’s called Snowy and the sign indicates that they’ll have froyo and snow ice.

My tipster says Snowy should open very soon. The business doesn’t seem to have an online or social media presence yet.

New Flavor Masterpiece Flavors at Yogurtland

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland’s new flavor promotion started today, with three new Flavor Masterpieces: Nectarine Peach Orange Tart frozen yogurt, Strawberry Rose frozen yogurt, and vegan Coconut Cream Pie. Yes, the first one is a new tart froyo flavor (yay!). Coconut Cream Pie is dairy-free and it has live and active cultures, so it’s still frozen yogurt.

The new flavors sound more refreshing than the last batch, the Flavors of Summer. All the flavors were creamy and smooth, including the dairy-free coconut cream pie flavor.

* Strawberry Rose frozen yogurt: I was excited to try this more creative flavor. Yogurtland describes it as, “Fruity, tart, and juicy California Strawberries combined with rosewater in sweet yogurt creates a masterful flavor experience!” I’m happy to report that the rose is very noticeable, even more so than the strawberry, but it’s not too perfume-like. It’s mild and pleasant. Strawberry rose froyo is made with real rosewater and nonfat. Recommended toppings: Fresh strawberries, strawberry puree, honey.

* Coconut Cream Pie vegan frozen yogurt: This is a dense, rich flavor, because of the coconut cream. It tastes like coconut cream. At 50 calories an ounce, I think it’s the highest calorie Yogurtland offering. Yogurtland describes it as, “The sweet combination of REAL Coconut and Graham Crumbs blended into smooth Coconut Milk creates a delicious treat reminiscent of Coconut Cream Pie! Made with REAL Coconut and Graham Crumbs!” Coconut Cream Pie froyo is cultured, dairy free, and made with coconut cream, coconut milk, and coconut oil.

* Nectarine Peach Orange Tart frozen yogurt: Yogurtland describes it as: “This fruity and tangy treat is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Our Flavorologists have blended REAL Nectarines, Peaches, and Oranges into our Tart yogurt to create a truly refreshing frozen treat that is a delicious balance of sweet and tart!” I love tart froyo but I did not like this flavor. It tasted like a peach powdered drink mix for kids. The orange flavor was faint. NPO tart is nonfat, gluten-free, and vitamin C fortified. Recommended toppings: Popping boba.

There were two new toppings: Sour Rainbow Belts and Cotton Candy Fizzies. These flavors and toppings are here for a limited time only, while supplies last.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s Featured Flavors for August: Cinnamon Frosted Cereal & Wild Raspberry Sorbet

Fro-yo girl here. Menchie’s has just launched two new flavors for August, Cinnamon Frosted Cereal froyo made with Kellogg’s Cinnamon Frosted Flakes and Wild Raspberry Sorbet made with Sour Patch Kids.

For some reason, it is hard to find the new flavors on their scheduled launch date. I’ve tried calling multiple locations, but they usually don’t answer the phone. I went to one location and did not find the new flavors. The flavors on the Menchie’s website for specific locations do not match the flavors the store actually has. Frustrating!

* Wild Raspberry Sorbet made with Sour Patch Kids:
The location that I went to ran out of this flavor, though I was able to try a drop by working the handle for a few minutes. The drop was very flavorful. I do love Sour Patch Kids. This flavor is dairy free, gluten free, nonfat, and high fructose corn syrup free. Recommended toppings: Sour Patch Kids or any sour gummi candy.

* Cinnamon Frosted Cereal froyo made with Kellogg’s Cinnamon Frosted Flakes: The cinnamon flavor wasn’t too strong, so this was a mild and pleasant. This flavor is nonfat and made with no artificial colors of flavors. Recommended toppings: Graham crackers, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, almonds, Cool Whip

I think there were some new toppings? Hurry in because the flavors are around while supplies last.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Pinkberry Closes at the Americana at Brand

Fro-yo girl here. I haven’t been to the Americana in awhile, but this week I drove by looking for Pinkberry, only it was no longer there! So sad. The Americana (Glendale, CA) location was the best Pinkberry location in the area. I spoke to the owner in the past and she seemed to have a true passion for frozen yogurt. The texture and product seemed better and fresher here. The interior was cleaner. And I loved stopping for a Pinkberry while shopping.

The front was covered up by a sign that said “your new doctor will see you.” (goforward.com/Glendale) Forward is also taking over the space next door, which belonged to Jamba Juice. Concierge medicine – what a BORING replacement.

The last day was July 7, 2018. This closure hurts. I guess I’ll go to Pressed Juicery for a Freeze instead.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
