Blue Hill Savory Yogurt Review

Fro-yo girl here. I first heard about savory vegetable-based yogurt when Blue Hill launched in late 2013. During a recent trip to Whole Foods, I spotted Blue Hill in the yogurt section. Whole Foods carried four flavors: Carrot, Butternut Squash, Beet and Sweet Potato. One 5.3 oz cup is $2.79.

Blue Hill Yogurt is made with milk from grass-fed cows in the Northeast. They’re made with vegetable puree and have a lower sugar content. The vegetables are sourced from small farms in the Northeast, including the Blue Hill Farm. Some flavors like Butternut Squash are seasonal.

Available flavors:
  • Carrot
  • Sweet Potato
  • Beet
  • Butternut Squash
  • Tomato
  • Parsnip

The packaging is gorgeous: black background, white typeface, colorful vegetable (squash and tomatoes are technically fruit) in the center and colored foil tops. The yogurt has a vibrant color saturated hue. The consistency is not as thick as Greek yogurt. It’s about average in thickness. The back of the label has suggested mix-ins and a recipe.

Beet yogurt: The sourness and the acidity struck me first. The beet flavor was difficult to discern. I could taste the raspberries more. It tasted like sour raspberry vinegar which I didn’t really appreciate. However once sweetened with agave, I could taste the earthy beets and the tanginess was quite nice.

Butternut squash yogurt: Very sour, the sourness interferes with the appreciation of the flavors and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Once I added agave nectar, it tasted like a cold butternut squash soup. The flavor was interesting but I wouldn’t eat a lot of it. I prefer hot butternut squash soup.

One serving of beet yogurt (150g) has 100 calories, 180mg of sodium, 4.5g total fat, and 10g of sugar.

Ingredients (Beet yogurt): Pasteurized organic whole milk, beets, honey, raspberries, beet juice concentrate, sea salt, red wine vinegar, live active cultures

These yogurt flavors are intriguing but I can’t see eating a cup for breakfast or even a snack. My advice: use for cooking or if eating out of the cup, sweeten to taste. I appreciate low sugar yogurt but these yogurts are just sour; they also have a fair amount of salt. My labne has 15 mg of salt for each 30g serving, Blue Hill has more than double the amount of salt.

Visit bluehillyogurt.com to look for a stockist near you.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Top This: The Ultimate Toppings Challenge

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland’s fall promotion begins today and runs through November 8th. Yogurtland's Top This: The Ultimate Toppings Challenge features three flavors (two are new) and four Instagram challenges.

  • Fresh Strawberry: One of Yogurtland’s most popular flavors features a mix of different types of strawberries. “A delightfully sweet treat blended with real, hand-selected strawberries for a fresh flavor that’s good for you and good for your cup!” This sweet creamy flavor reminds me of strawberry ice cream and evokes feelings of nostalgia.
    • Recommended toppings: gummy bears, Fruity Pebbles, popping boba
  • Vanilla Malt: “Pile it high, pack it on and use the tastiest malted vanilla flavor to create the most whimsical masterpiece imaginable.” The malt flavor is subtle but the vanilla flavor is pronounced, like vanilla soft serve but it still tastes like yogurt too. Yum!
    • Recommended toppings: Malt balls, white chocolate chips, Nilla wafers, toffee bits
  • Chocolate Truffle: “Indulge yourself in this perfectly decadent flavor made with real cocoa sourced straight from Europe. It’s the perfect canvas for your delicious froyo creation.” I generally don’t like chocolate froyo but this flavor was good – like chocolate ice cream with a mild milk chocolate flavor and creamy rich texture. It didn’t taste just like a fudgsicle.
    • Recommended toppings: Brownies, cheesecake, chocolate sauce, cookie dough, Oreos
The flavors are available while supplies last. The three flavors remind me of the classic ice cream parlor flavors you’d find in a traditional banana split or Neapolitan ice cream sandwich.

While you’re enjoying your creations, be sure to take pictures and share them on Instagram with the tag, #YLTopThis. Or you can share your creation via Snapchat – sent to @YogurtlandInc

The contest themes are:

  • Most Decadent (9/14 – 9/27): “Make the most indulgent, truly mouthwatering masterpiece.”
  • Most Fruit-a-licious (9/28 – 10/11): “Show us how you do healthy.”
  • Most Whimsical (10/12 – 10/25): “Create the most magical and crazy creation you can.”
  • Most Colossal (10/26 – 11/8): “Pile it to the sky.”
Oreo disks are back! And keep checking for the return of Pumpkin Pie froyo. Ask for it if your Yogurtland doesn’t carry it (maybe they’ll order it for you).

Menchie’s Complete Set of PAN Cups, Neverland Adventure Sweepstakes

Fro-yo girl here. I don’t collect froyo cups the way I collect froyo spoons, but when I see a cute cup or learn about a collectible, limited time only cup design, I will add to my froyo cup collection.

Menchie’s new PAN froyo cups are inspired by Warner Bros. Pictures’ and RatPac-Dune Entertainment’s new live action movie, PAN. They’ve issued four exclusive designs, each featuring a character from the movie: Peter Pan, Captain Blackbeard, Hook and Tiger Lily, as well as scenes from the movie. Each character also has a feature flavor, aka the Flavors of Neverland. All the character cups should be available at your participating Menchie’s while supplies last.

The newest flavor belongs to Captain Hook. Hook’s Jolly Roger Raspberry Tart “will be making waves from September 11th to September 20th with flavors of blue raspberry that are as mildly tart as Hook himself.” I’ve had the Blue Raspberry Tart flavor before (it was renamed for the promotion) and liked it. It reminds me of the Blue Raspberry ICEEs and Slurpees that I grew up with (didn’t notice my tongue turning blue though) but more mild because of the creamy addition of yogurt. It’s not as refreshing as an icy ICEE but it’s more substantial.

Recommended toppings: white chocolate chips, raspberries, blueberries, popping boba, mochi

The last featured PAN flavor is Tiger Lily’s Tropical Mango Sorbet (available Sept. 21-30).

Remember to pick up the limited edition spoon of Neverland while you’re at Menchie’s; it features a sword-wielding Menchie.

The Neverland Adventure Sweepstakes is your chance to win a pair of passes to an advanced screening of the movie, PAN. Enter at http://www.menchies.com/pansweepstakes

The sweepstakes ends at 11:59 PM EST on September 25.

Innovative Froyo Shop Spotlight: Rawberri in West Hollywood, CA

Fro-yo girl here. Rawberri is a super healthy new shop that specializes in superfruit bowls. It’s very conscious of food allergies. They carry healthy, organic, dairy free, gluten free and soy free acai bowls, superfruit bowls, Cocowhip, Stumptown coffee, kombucha on tap and energy balls.

Bowls don’t interest me but CocoWhip does. Rawberri was the first in the US to carry CocoWhip, an Australian vegan, biofermented, frozen yogurt made with coconut water, organic bio-fermented coconut powder & vegetable sourced stabilizers. It has no added sugar and is 90 calories a serving.

Flavors of the day (CocoWhip):

* Original: airy, light, creamy, lightly sweetened – the texture was nice but the product had very little flavor, it had no tang at all, the aftertaste was clean though. This was too bland.

* Matcha slim: the texture was denser and icier than the original and it had flavor – it tasted like an icier green tea ice cream – imagine green tea sorbet. I liked how it wasn’t too sweet and it tasted clean/simple. It wasn’t tangy.

Toppings are healthy: fresh fruit, granola, nuts, seeds, goji berries, cacao nibs, agave, honey, vegan caramel, vegan chocolate sauce. The toppings are gluten free and I think soy free, dairy free, etc.

Prices: $5.95 for original w/o toppings, add $1 for 3 toppings; $6.95 for matcha slim w/o toppings, add $1 for 3 toppings

I think almond milk or soy froyo has the best flavor – it’s hard to say which is better because almond and soy milk taste different and both are good in frozen yogurt. On the other hand, coconut water doesn’t have much flavor.

The shop is by several gyms and is the perfect post-gym treat.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Rating: 3.5/5

* RAWBERRI: 8582 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069

Pinkberry Fall 2015 Flavors

Fro-yo girl here. Fall’s must have  Pinkberry flavors are Pumpkin, Blood Orange, and Pear. “Pear – crisp and light, it’s the pear-fect fall flavor. Blood Orange – an exquisite tart citrus made with real blood orange puree. Pumpkin – a creamy version of the perfect pumpkin pie with just the right amount of nutmeg – it’s delicious any way you slice it.”

I’ve had Pumpkin and Blood Orange at Pinkberry before but I haven’t seen Pear before. The Pear was my favorite flavor of the three. It was light and smooth, plus it tasted like the tangy Original flavor. I could definitely taste the pear (tasted like Anjou pears, crisp, sweet and tangy). I liked how the yogurt flavor wasn’t overwhelmed by the pear flavor. The sweet Pumpkin flavor had a strong cinnamon flavor, the spices were stronger than the pumpkin flavor. It reminded me  of the Cinnamon Churro Pinkberry flavor only with some pumpkin flavor. Blood Orange had too much blood orange concentrate; it overwhelmed the yogurt flavor.

There’s a new vegan, dairy-free, no sugar added flavor too: Peach Passion. Peach Passion combines peach, pear and apricot flavors. It tasted mainly like peach but muted by the other flavors, particularly the apricot. It’s sweet though no sugar is added. I don’t like apricot and it had a bitter aftertaste. Dairy-free mango was better.

The cinnamon streusel topping that I like so much is back and it’s a perfect complement to the Pumpkin froyo  flavor.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

New Desserts at 626 Night Market, Includes Froyo

Fro-yo girl here. The last 626 Night Market of 2015 is this weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at Santa Anita Park. While some vendors from the August night market returned (e.g., Ice Cream Garden, Ridges Churro Bar, Dolcissimo ice cream macaron sandwiches , UniqCone) there were also new dessert vendors. The handpulled noodle stall (China Tasty) was new and they had a guy making noodles on the spot.

New Desserts:

Nimo Yaki: Nimo Yaki is a a fresh fish shaped waffle (taiyaki) served plain (with red bean, $4) or filled with ice cream ($6). The soft serve ice cream is available in two flavors, vanilla and chocolate (or you can choose both). The wide mouth fish is made on a waffle iron. Red bean paste is added to the batter. The fish is stuffed with soft serve ice cream, then garnished with sprinkles and a wafer roll cookie. The vanilla ice cream wasn’t a high quality ice cream and the garnishes were run of the mill. The fish is a doughy waffle. It’s novel (and inspired by Korean street food) but the execution was disappointing.

Snow House Tea Bar: They had frozen yogurt! It was called fried yogurt with fresh fruits. You can get strawberry yogurt or mango yogurt ($8). The yogurt is poured in a thin layer on a cold metal plate and then scraped with spatulas and shaped into rolls. I tried something similar years ago at a place called Ice Pan in Los Angeles (it closed) and I wasn’t a fan.

Go late (it’s open till 1 AM) to avoid the long lines for food. The longest line is for ramen burgers. Free parking. Admission is $3.

Menchie’s PAN Spoon: Front and Back

Fro-yo girl here. Here’s a closer look at the new Menchie’s PAN froyo spoons, inspired by Warner Bros. Pictures’ and RatPac-Dune Entertainment’s new live action movie, PAN. The collectible blue sword-wielding, swashbuckling Menchie’s spoon is available for a limited time only.

Menchie looks like a pirate with a parrot perched on his right shoulder, though he isn’t wearing pirate attire.

Menchie’s New Peter Pan Promotion Brings PAN Inspired Flavors, Cups and Spoons

Fro-yo girl here. Menchie’s partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures’ and RatPac-Dune Entertainment’s new live action movie, PAN, brings a new Peter Pan promotion to stores in September.

The PAN-inspired flavors are PAN’s Pixie Dusted Sugar Cookie (available throughout September), Blackbeard’s Neverland Chocolate (Sept. 1-10), Hook’s Jolly Roger Raspberry Tart (Sept. 11-20) and Tiger Lily’s Tropical Mango Sorbet (Sept. 21-30).

* PAN’s Pixie Dusted Sugar Cookie froyo is described as “a decadent flavor of white sugar cookie with a sprinkle of pixie dust.” This lowfat flavor is made with real cookies and tastes like a very sweet sugar cookie dough. It’s creamy but not as smooth (perhaps because of the cookies).

Recommended toppings: Nilla wafers, frosted animal cookies, white chocolate chips, graham cracker crumbs

* Blackbeard’s Neverland Chocolate froyo is “a devilishly rich chocolate flavor.” It did have a strong chocolate flavor; it tasted like a fudgsicle.

Recommended toppings: anything chocolate, whipped cream

Four collectible PAN cups feature Peter Pan, Captain Blackbeard, Hook and Tiger Lily. The Menchie’s that I went to only had Hook cup.

The new blue sword wielding Menchie froyo spoon is available for a limited time only. Menchie looks like a pirate with a parrot perched on his right shoulder.
